@@B-Dad I agree to an extent. Every one of my personal top 10 episodes are from the second half of season 4 onwards, with season 5 being the all time best! But gotta give props to Innocence for knocking down the first domino of TRAUMA and veering the show away from just a parade of monsters of the week.
Notice how Drusilla's outfits have changed in nature. while she was weak, she wore only white, and primarily nightgowns. But now that she is restored, she wears red, and often evening attire (dresses and such).

It's a "holy shit" episode on so many levels. Holy shit, this is so good. Holy shit, where's it going to go? Holy shit, the tone just changed drastically. Holy shit, David Boreanaz can act. And he's, like, _really good_ at it when the material calls for him to do more than be dreamy or brood. It's also a bit of a "holy shit" moment for teen drama and television itself in ways that might be missed now. Holy shit, it's going there and holy shit, building up a dramatic twist over more than a season of television can pay off beautifully. This episode is full of moments that wouldn't hit nearly as hard if the show hadn't built them up carefully over time, and you just can't do that with the then-traditional mostly episodic format for this kind of show.

Dream sequences always played a big part in The Buffyverse. We could see Buffy's prophetic dreams re: harm coming to Angel. This episode Surprise, is where this show really starts to seriously pick up regarding the arc of the Season. We see Jenny being visited by her strange uncle looking for revenge. The excitement from Drusilla and Spike when The Judge comes back to life is great. Buffy on her birthday gets her Surprise party, Oz steals the show, and is just so laid back when Willow explains to him about everything. Without doubt the coolest character in The Buffyverse. The title Surprise is still coming to Buffy, we see her losing her virginity to Angel here, but see Angel in such pain in the rain at the end after what has happened. There is of course a sinister reason for this. This is really a two-parter with E14 which is just exceptional, where all is revealed. From now on the show really does improve so much and goes like a roller coaster, you can just see it getting slicker and more polished. Now you know we always kept saying that form Mid S2 onwards this show really takes off. This episode Innocence along with preceding episode Surprise are where the show changed. I think this is the best episode by far up until this point, but believe it or not there are two more episodes in this Season that surpass this! There are so many reveals and jaw dropping scenes coming up, but this episode Innocence definitely a Top 20 from the whole series of 144 episodes. Here we now know that Angel has changed into Angelus, where the Gypsy curse has come to pass. Buffy realising that Miss Calendar was behind it was a great scene where she grabs her by the throat in the classroom. There are so many brilliant scenes it this it is hard to pinpoint any. The pain Buffy feels when Angel is talking about her losing her virginity and sexual performance is just so hard to watch. 'Innocence' of course also refers to Willow who is devastated to see Xander kiss Cordelia, and you can also see the 'Innocence' of her budding relationship with Oz. The rocket launcher scene in the mall is epic. Strap in for the ride there is even better to come!
Xander can't move on from hating Angel. His hatred is not just about being jealous. He hates all Vampires. His best friend Jesse was killed by vampires. He can accept working with Angel, but he will never ever accept him.
Good point but also Xander needs clarity about life and choices. He is not nuanced or understands anything that does not fit into his instruction manual for life.

Angel's "things are about to get very interesting" pretty much sums up the rest of the season. Also, these two episodes are the show's turning point, in my opinion. A big step ahead, especially story and character wise.
Season 2 really is where this show's entire team hit its stride and pushed past what anyone expected. It isn't a spoiler to give a little background on behind the scenes bits of what you've already seen. Spike WAS supposed to be a minor big bad at the start of season and then get killed...but he rated so high with the early fans that the writing team called off the 'hit' and wrote him into the rest of the season...legend has it that this did not initially sit well with Joss...who normally stuck with his vision and creative direction and let the chips fall where they may...but the resentment faded when James Marsters proved that he could continually bring new energy and subtlety to the show. Where Season 1 established the shows premise and took very few creative risks, Season 2 struck right at the heart (lol) again and again, with surprise after surprise twist that eventually led to that style of storytelling as 'Whedon-esque'. Keeping the show from getting stale also gave them the full season length they needed to slip in depth for each character, to make them relatable and lovable/hate-able...and they did it expertly. The show itself had a near instant fan base as dedicated as anyone could ask for, but the network moved their air times and wildly undervalued them, making the set a pressure cooker where no one was sure they be there for more than another season or two. In the end, we got 7 years of Buffy and 5 of Angel, all of which were better than a lot of TV of the time, and a few episodes were very much history in the making...still looked back on as the most remarkable prime time creations within the limits of the TV medium. I don't do spoilers, but as you work your way through the seasons, the key episodes will always stand out. You'll know them when you find them. ;-)
Don’t know if you watched when it aired but these 2 episodes were critical to the show and the network. The WB was dark on Tuesday and they decided to move Buffy from Monday to Tuesday This seemed really stupid but it was going to happen in January. So Surprise was the last Monday show and Innocence came on the next night, Tuesday
BTVS is so good at drawing evil supernatural parallels with real teen problems. Buffy has sex with Angel for the first time ("losing innocence"), and Angel literally turns evil right afterwards, becomes a jerk to her like a lot of teen/college boys do irl when they get what they want even if before the sex they were super sweet. That's, of course, not exactly what's happening with Angel here, but from Buffy's perspective having sex with him for the first time ruined everything. Which is a sentiment a lot of teen girls can relate to.
These two episodes aired on consecutive days. Through “Surprise” Buffy aired on Monday nights. “Innocence” aired the next day, and Buffy aired on Tuesdays for the rest of its run. It was also sweeps week, so this two-nighter was a heavily promoted Event on the WB.
This season is an emotional rollercoaster - welcome to the rabbit hole. Juliet Landau (yes related to Martin - think she is his daughter?) is mind-blowingly good in this. Thank you so much for your great reactions!
"We got to see some blossoming romance, it makes me happy." Joss Whedon: " Hold my beer..." Miss Calendar is definitely a technopagan, we saw her in action helping cast Moloch out of the net. But she's also a member of the Romani tribe that cursed Angel with a soul, which we found out about in the episode where he ends up killing Darla, his sire... One moment where everything he'd done no longer plagues his thoughts, one moment of true happiness... That moment was waking up next to the love of his life, after they'd made love for the first time. All he could think of was how happy he was, a moment where he forgot all that guilt... The Master did say Angel was the most vicious creature he'd ever met.
The weapon at the end is called a LAW. It is a second generation RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher). The bazooka is a 1st generation rpg. (LAW stands for Light Anti-Tank Weapon)
Oh, you're at this point now...there is so much coming that's going to break your hearts. This is where the show hits it's stride, you two are in for a ride now
LOL-Buffy's afraid her mother will be able to tell she's not a virgin anymore. The breaking of the plate in her dream symbolized she was about to lose her virginity.
Surprise was the last airing on Monday night and then Buffy moved to Tuesday with Innocence. It was a big deal and I attended my first Buffy watching party. I was the only boy invited and watched with 5 pretty girls( one reason BTVS will be #1 always). The talk before was what is wrong with Angel. The girls all thought he had been poisoned somehow by Dru and they were concerned About 10 minutes later there was stunned disbelief and confusion . No one understood until…. Slowly the reveal that Angel was gone and Angelius had taken hold. When Angel acts like a bastard to Buffy at the apartment, the sniffles started. 5 girls had no idea how to act. When Buffy takes out the bazooka and blows the Judge away… the cheers were so loud. Then when Buffy curls up with her Mother.. the sobbing returned. The phone rang when the credits started and another group that has been watching called all confused . They were supposed to watch the premiere of Dawsons Creek but that didn’t matter. 1 hour before there was great concern and in 1 hour there were girls saying “ how can we get him back “ and I hope Buffy stakes him good and hard”. Most incredible turn of a character ever . Then the hatred for Jenny started for her betrayal. The Slayer has prophetic dreams. The first time we see Buffy we observe her sleeping and see her dream. It is actually most if the First Season. Giles asks her at The Bronze in that first episode if the dreams have started. Buffy’s dreams help to prepare and. protect her from coming evil. All dreams of Buffy should be studied and will help in understanding the situation about to happen. Great reaction. You have some episodes ahead that will require more discussion but the entertainment factor is increasing. Thank you for sharing the Buffy journey and you are great.
Guys, I just want to say that y'all are like, really good. Your videos are super confortable to watch!! The moment I see there's a new Buffy or Charmed video from you guys, I just have to watch it! Thank you for your content!! And keep enjoying the masterpiece that is Buffy
2 absolute bangers! David Boreanaz is so great as Angelus you immediately want him gone. Love Oz! Buffy with the rocket launcher is one of the most badass Buffy moments of the entire series.
Buffy is absolutely my favorite series of all time and I’ve watched it through umpteen times. You guys are KILLING the reactions!! I ADORE watching your reactions and can’t wait for Fridays to roll around to relive my favorite show with my favorite reactors. 🥰🥰😍😍😘😘
30:40... Without words, your BFF ALWAYS Knows I remember being at a house party with my best friend and her boyfriend.... She came down the stairs the next morning, there was a lot of stuff going on that night, but as soon as I saw her come down the stairs, I told her we needed to talk in the kitchen NOW... I knew. Just like Joyce knew there was something different about Buffy but she couldn't place it... I know what was different about my BFF in an instant. Just like Willow knew to tell Giles to shut up. Sometimes words aren't necessary when you know the person well enough
Please Please please can you add "Angel" into the mix when you hit Buffy season 4? Maybe it's because I first watched both shows in my 20s, but I actually preferred "Angel", even though the titular character really, really annoys me. But the arch that Wesley goes through (and Cordelia before Joss got mad at Charisma Carpenter for being pregnant) is a beautiful thing to watch. So is Lindsey, played by Christian Kane.
Juliet Landau takes after her dad Martin Landau as he was a brilliant actor as well, as in oscar winning actor. The guy that played the Judge. You might remember him from season 1 episodes 1 & 2. He was the vampire Luke.
A turning point for the show... for sure. David Boreanaz really surprises as an evil version of his character. And yes, SMG and Boreanaz chemistry is extremely strong, they sell every scene together.
So glad you could watch these two together! I can't even describe the shock I felt the first time I watched this... I don't remember how long I had to wait in between the episodes, but it was definitely too long!
The reason Buffy stepped back on the stair when her mom came forward, is because Buffy smelled like sex, and drugs. She didn't want her mom to be tipped off by sniff radius.
Innocence _had_ to be a banger. If any aspect of it failed, it would've been a disaster. Especially Angelus. We've been told how awful Angel was before he got his soul back, but it's easy to tell the audience that and hard to show them in a way that actually lives up to the hype. Watching that scene where he hits all of Buffy's insecurities one by one, and "was it good for you too?" you fucking buy it. Yes, he was that bad. Yes, the Scoobies are in terrible danger.
Jenny was a technopagan in practice as she as adept at techno practices but she was also of Romani heritage . Her family were the Gypsies that cursed angel for the slaughter of one of their beloved daughters hundred plus years prior.
Note that the Judge was able to burn the scholar vampire and could sense the humanity in Spike and Dru. This is because all vampires retain a semblance or echo of their humanity. It’s important to note that the Judge is unable to find any within Angelus. Angelus is unique amoung vampires. He’s their equivalent of what a genuine psychopath would be to humans. Even the _Master_ called him the most vicious creature he’d ever met.
So I had a realization for the first time recently watching the scene where Buffy kicks Angel in the nuts and then decides NOT to kill him. Like girl I understand it’s hard for you right now but you just made the WILLING DECISION to let him go KNOWING that he WILL kill people. Like it’s incredibly messed up and NOBODY talks about it 😭🙌
i love the claddagh ring, ive known its symbolism before i saw it on buffy and i loved it even more being of part irish decent. ive asked for it for my engagement ring
I litteraly waited until you uploaded the finale to start watching the Angel Arch. Can't wait to binge!!! This show was my entire childhood! Wild to go on this ride with fresh perspectives❤❤❤
I don't think Jenny knew that the curse could be ended this way. She seemed surprised when Mr. Vargas the Subway Ghost* told her about that. That is a deeply stupid curse. Angeles is a maniacal killer. Let's punish him until he no longer feels guilt. Then he gets to be a maniacal killer again. Just make him incapable of happiness. *RIP Vincent Schiavelli also from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Ghost, the characters above. Angel killed that smoking woman aka Sophia Crawford, SMG's stunt double. The Judge was Brian Thompson who previously played Luke in Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest. Joss freaked out because someone leaked that Buffy had sex to the internet. They were extra careful with the script, so he thought one of the crew did it. It turned out that Brian Thompson was running lines with his sister, who read the scripts and leaked it. Brian never worked on another Whedon project.
2x13: When Buffy moves into the total suck that adulthood can be. This is the beginning when harsh reality intrudes on fantasy. Though, of course, there are demons, vamps, apocalypse, etc. This is where Buffy, underneath, is facing becoming an adult and finding out that sometimes those closest can cut deepest and life can really be shit. Like, the guy getting you put out to, and then turning into a gygundo a-hole because you gave it up... not sure, maybe that's a straight guy thing. But David plays Angelus masterfully. And I've never loved Giles more or I think will, unless something has escaped my old feeble brain, than the car scene near the ending of 2x14. "All you will get from me is my support... and my respect." *and I'm done*
David Boreanaz is pretty fun as a villain. To see him turn it to 11 and ham it up - The Crow 4: Wicked Prayer It has Edward Furlong and Tara Reid, so you know it's terrible in a fun way 😅
I fell behind at the worst time possible! Been a crazy month. Still, can't help but post some thoughts. 1st: this was so shocking and wild when it aired. Everyone was talking about it and what could happen. David did an amazing job transitioning from Angel to Angelus. Juliet Landeau who plays Druscilla is incredible. I think Dru and Angelus are two of the legit scariest big bads in the show. Their personalities are so menacing. I feel like people are very hypocritical with how they treat Willow and Xander's crushes. If Xander says anything about Buffy dating or dislikes a guy she likes he is immediately shamed. People are very harsh on his feelings toward Angel, though his feelings for Angel are shown to be half jealousy and half a hatred of vampires. He isn't into the nuance of souls or anything, and this shows he might have a point. Buffy is also never expected to watch her words or feelings toward other guys around him. Responsibility is entirely on him to deal with it. With Willow it is entirely different though. She gets upset if he shows interest in other girls and it is seen as justifiable and sympathetic. She tore him apart for Cordelia and feeling attracted to her, while treating him as bad for not feeling attracted to her, but that's ok. Xander has absolutely acted with insensitivity at particular times with Willow, but Willow doesn't own him anymore than he does Buffy and the double standard has always bugged me. Jenny was such a big twist too and I felt so bad for Giles. Giles talk with Buffy at the end of the episode is still one of my favorite tv moments. You didn’t see a lot of balanced, empowering conversations around young women and sex, so you fully expected him to shame her, especially with the aftermath. Instead he simply acknowledged the risks she took only in passing and jumped straight to love and support. He trusted that she hadn't taken the choice lightly, and it was true that there was no way to foresee the outcome. Most importantly though he saw that she needed a father, not an authoritarian. He put her first as a person, rather than a slayer. Truly some of the best episodes of tv i have seen.
Ohhh you guys are at the point where they really, really hit their stride. And the hits will keep coming, also the beginning of Buffy's Birthday Curse.
In all seriousness, if you were to try asking Juliet Landau to help plan your wedding as Dru there's a much larger than zero chance she might be up for it. She is every level of excellent like that.
Love season 2. The misdirects are so good. First we think the big bad of the season will be the anointed one. Then we think it will be spike and dru, but alas, it's Angelus after all
If Drusilla was a slayer it would have been mentioned in the Watchers diaries and Angel would have said so in himself in the episode “lie to me” when he confesses to Buffy how he turned her.
Angel turning into Angellus is always the hardest episodes for me to watch because you kind of see how there’s no way Buffy and Angel can have a future 😭😭😭
Juliet Landau was absolutely fabulous as Drusilla. She really gets to shine in these episodes.
I literally think about her all the time, she massacred this role so well. Unbelievably good.
Very underrated actress
She's definitely the reason Drusilla was always my favourite character :)
This is when Buffy really starts firing on all cylinders. Beautiful acting by SMG too

Ahhhh!! I’ve been waiting for this!
This is my favourite season and this season created the blueprint for revolutionary Television.
"Do it again! Do it again!" her delivery is amazing.
Shame they edited it off 😢
If I was Angel, I WOULD always answer the door like that.
Been waiting for this since y’all started Buffy
This season is an emotional rollercoaster - welcome to the rabbit hole. Juliet Landau (yes related to Martin - think she is his daughter?) is mind-blowingly good in this. Thank you so much for your great reactions!
"We got to see some blossoming romance, it makes me happy."
Joss Whedon: " Hold my beer..."
Miss Calendar is definitely a technopagan, we saw her in action helping cast Moloch out of the net.
The Master did say Angel was the most vicious creature he'd ever met.
i love the look dru and angelus gavie each other at the sight of the rocket launcher and they booked it
i love how willow instantly knew and told giles to shut up. it was perfect
The weapon at the end is called a LAW. It is a second generation RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher). The bazooka is a 1st generation rpg. (LAW stands for Light Anti-Tank Weapon)
I'd like to invoke Rule of Cool here. It's bazooka.
Whatever it’s called, it’s such a cool badass scene
Sarah's acting is outstanding
Oh, you're at this point now...there is so much coming that's going to break your hearts.
This is where the show hits it's stride, you two are in for a ride now
The comment about perfume ad was funny, because Sarah Michelle Gellar was actually a face of Maybelline.
I love all of Buffy, but nothing tops this season in terms of pure drama. Buckle up, guys!
LOL-Buffy's afraid her mother will be able to tell she's not a virgin anymore. The breaking of the plate in her dream symbolized she was about to lose her virginity.
yea, i think it flew over their heads that buffy had sex for the first time with angel.
No. It didn’t. What a bizarre thing to try to extrapolate from that.
Sounds like you need to get laid.
You’re sick.
SHOOKETH !!!
Finally...gird your loins
I’ve got y’all’s posting schedule burned into my brain at this point.
30:40... Without words, your BFF ALWAYS Knows
I remember being at a house party with my best friend and her boyfriend....
It’s so heartbreaking to see him going back to Angelus but such a good twist to the show.
I _need_ them to react to episode 18 of the first season!!!
Juliet Landau takes after her dad Martin Landau as he was a brilliant actor as well, as in oscar winning actor. The guy that played the Judge. You might remember him from season 1 episodes 1 & 2. He was the vampire Luke.
Brian Thompson.
banger episodes, banger season, banger entire show quite honestly
A turning point for the show... for sure.
David Boreanaz really surprises as an evil version of his character.
And yes, SMG and Boreanaz chemistry is extremely strong, they sell every scene together.
SERGIO!!!! i screamed when you said "get up"😭😭i literally can't
So glad you could watch these two together! I can't even describe the shock I felt the first time I watched this... I don't remember how long I had to wait in between the episodes, but it was definitely too long!
IT'S HERE!!!!! I'm seated1!!!! This is where the series hit the gas.
The reason Buffy stepped back on the stair when her mom came forward, is because Buffy smelled like sex, and drugs. She didn't want her mom to be tipped off by sniff radius.
What a load of rubbish. I could understand the sex part, but drugs? You pulled that out of your ass.
Loved these episodes coming up. The show became so exciting with Angel turning into Angelus. 😈
Your videos are wonderful way to start weekend. Thx for them :) Greeting from Czech republic :)
Great reaction guys after you’ve finished Buffy.Could you please react to Doctor Who.
"All you will get from me is my support... and my respect."
*and I'm done*
Oz is unbelievably cool.
Seriously, he is my third favorite character in the whole series. Buffy and Giles take the first two spots, of course.
David Boreanaz is pretty fun as a villain. To see him turn it to 11 and ham it up - The Crow 4: Wicked Prayer
It has Edward Furlong and Tara Reid, so you know it's terrible in a fun way 😅
I fell behind at the worst time possible!
Smurfenstein?
In all seriousness, if you were to try asking Juliet Landau to help plan your wedding as Dru there's a much larger than zero chance she might be up for it. She is every level of excellent like that.
Love season 2. The misdirects are so good. First we think the big bad of the season will be the anointed one. Then we think it will be spike and dru, but alas, it's Angelus after all
birthday episodes remind me, me n buffy was born on the same day (twinzies) love oz n willow here,
i was also given the same ring,
cordie n dru here💜
the judge was played by the same guy who played the big vampire in the pilot episodes
If Drusilla was a slayer it would have been mentioned in the Watchers diaries and Angel would have said so in himself in the episode “lie to me” when he confesses to Buffy how he turned her.
I would LOVE to attend a wedding planned by Dru!
The judge is the same guy from the pilot in season one that Buffy killed at the bronze…
I feel Judge Should have Been around more Angel turning bad was Pretty good
You can always tell when Angel turns evil because he breaks out the leather pants. Never trust a hot guy in leather pants!!!
Oh, that burning taste of heartbreak this show delivers so well...
BTW, original plan was to have a tank. But a bazooka is way better, I think.
Can’t wait for you to get to season 4 of Buffy.I know it’s not some
Fans fav but I didn’t mind it.
The subtle changes in Angel's makeup now he is Angelus are interesting like his pale nude lip.
Patiently waiting for the next episode of charmed 🫣🥰
OMG! David Boreanaz kills it as Angelus. I'm excited for y'all to finish this season.
I ❤This 2 Part Episode!🙆♀️🥰🧛♂️🎛🖥🩷
How could you cut the Angelus/Spike kiss ☹️
Oh yeah these episodes are ROUGH but they are an amazing start to the rest of the season
i still think jenny was still technopagan
yes! i think we have all been waiting for this. now the season really begins.
Me, to that one comment very early on: 👀 oh honey, you got a big storm comin’…
These two episodes are insane. The show gets even better from here on out.
Angel turning into Angellus is always the hardest episodes for me to watch because you kind of see how there’s no way Buffy and Angel can have a future 😭😭😭
