- Hands-on with the NEW C1 Moonphase from Christopher Ward. But is this a fitting follow-up to the incredible C1 Bel Canto, launched this time last year?

Great vid as always dude, and in the history of TH-cam watch reviews, has to be the first EVER to include the menstrual cycle 😂😂
Cheers Chris, I like to be a pioneer 😂😂😂
I think we have different thoughts on the term " high horology"....
I am a CW fan and owner of the Bel Canto Azzuro (for ever the first and one of my favourite watches!) and of a bespoke C65 Royal Marines Commando. However, I am starting to think that CW is losing its particular pozitionning since one year. The Twelve has a beautiful case but for me, the patterned dial is a little bit too much and the poor-specs Sellita SW200-1 make it unsufficient to justify the increasing price of CW watches (especially compared to the Tissot PRX which is of course not as well finished than the Twelve but which is half-price for 90% of a similar wearing experience). Furthermore, the very expensive Twelve Halo looks more like an homage of other swiss brands and, at this price point, I could buy 5 Venezianico Redentore ultrablack for the same (may be better) effect (look at the musou black dial!).
I totally agree with you regarding the C1 Moonphase: far to large and thick for a suuposed-to-be dress watch.
For me, CW was heading in the good direction with the BelCanto. The company should keep on pursuing an innovative track (and work on more accurate, reliable, with better specs movements) rather than following the different hypes.
Firstly, congrats on owning the Bel Canto (I'm a little envious!) however it's really interesting to see that others share some of my thoughts on this new Moonphase and like you I also feel that the PRX offers much of what you get with The Twelve for almost half the price. It's definitely a great design, but not the strong value proposition that we've come to expect from CW in recent times.
Personally I hope that next year we see another concept watch that's as technically impressive as the Bel Canto or C60 Concept, though the release of this Moonphase makes me wonder whether they will continue to push the boundaries and stretch the value proposition so far in future.
You are right, it falls between 2 chairs, neither dress nor sport. It just doesn’t feel right. Beautyfull dial, but too thick, Don’t really like the bracelet either, and CW and many other should use solid caseback, the SW200 isn’t that interesting to look at. Sorry to be a little harsh but it’s a €2,655 watch.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts man. I thought I'd be roasted in the comments for my views on this one, but so far most people seem to agree, which is interesting 🤔
I like what this watch is trying to do. Its simplicity is beautiful. But here are the changes I would want:
1) thinner
2) no second hand. It’s distracting and I think it would be more pleasing to look at if the second had wasn’t moving.
3) so if I don’t want a second hand, then I want this to be quartz. Which would help make it thinner.
4) and I want lighter, so Titanium is what I want.
And yes, I did just buy the new Citizen Tsuki-yomi a-t.
I own 2 Christopher ward watches. An early chrono and the dive watch. The prices have increased over the years as there watches become more sophisticated/ adventurous. I absolutely. Love the look of this watch. I would pair it with a navy leather strap. Just seems right to me. I have 14 watches, ranging from seiko. To a rather nice cartier tank. I just feel that Christopher ward will be somewhere among the elite watch brands in the next decade.
finally an honest review on this piece. The dial and the moons are amazing, but gosh this thinness is killing it for me. Make it slimmer like 12 or 11mm and 39mm diameter and you get a banger.
My wife is not into watches like I am, but she sent me the link to this watch with a note that she'd like one. I don't think she realized how big it is, but I absolutely agree it would be a hit in 36mm. It would need to be thinner, but they can keep the sportier bracelet. My wife liked the bracelet.
36mm C63 Celest is out, I say that looks better
Mate, that dial is haute-horology level of gorgeous! On this trajectory, I'm sure Swatch Group's entry level brands will have a hard time catching up! Brilliant review as always 😄
Also, with regards to the case dimensions, I have asked this question to two different watch brand CEOs, on why they like to have dress watches on larger cases. Basically, the main reason is the dial. These watches are not meant to be tucked under a sleeve, but instead showed off at meet ups. And while the trend is heading towards smaller cases, there is still a huge buyer market for 40 - 42mm diameter watches with complications.
Thanks so much man. The dial is absolutely gorgeous. Interesting juxtaposition however with the case which for me makes this a somewhat confused offering that feels like it's trying to appeal to fans of both the dress watch and sports watch genres 🤔
Haute - horology.....come on mate....
I have exceptionally large wrists so i m not bothered by the size but i think the same watch with a hand wound movement would fix it 100 percent. Would reduce the thickness greatly
Well I certainly learned a bit in this episode. Especially about Aventurine. Super videography Simon. I’m totally with you about this not quite knowing what it wants to be and as beautiful as that dial looks on my TV set, I can’t imagine that vinyl record on my wrist. ( maybe if I saw it on leather I’d feel slightly differently). But again… maybe too much brushed surfaces? At any rate, thanks for showing me this one today.
Thanks Michael, I'm sure CW will find fans for this piece and I definitely applaud them for doing something different, but I don't think it will be a smash hit in the way many of their other recent models have been.
So Simon, the boss finally kicked you out of the lounge then🤣Anyway, I have to say I've been looking for a moon phase and this one is my fav as I don't want to blow thousands on a watch that isn't going to get the most wrist time. That dial though does look amazing, but I have to keep telling myself that it all looks wow under macro, but is it just as good looking at it with just your eyes? Is all the detail lost under normal viewing? I actually rather like this look with the bracelet and case as its no too dressy and can go either way, and not a classic dress watch where your waiting for an invite to pull out the tux and slip it on.
😂 we moved house and the new kitchen is about the only presentable room at the moment unfortunately!
The dial on that CW is just as good in the flesh as it looks in the footage and pics 👍
@@Escapement24 congrats 🥂 on the house move! I’m hoping that they make a 40mm C63 Celest, same dial without the moon and hr markers. Anyway I love the vids, sound quality and production is spot on.
I like the way the dial is designed but I don't like their strap nor the bracelet which is offered to choose.
(Feels like something is missing)
Agree 💯 The bracelet wears well but doesn't suit a dress watch IMO
I love what CW are doing. I have the elite 1000 dove watch and thr value for money is incredible. I also want the bel canto.
If this comes in 38 mm , I will buy it today
How did you get jt early? It comes out in April 2024
This was a press sample loaned to me by the brand
I love Christopher ward, I have a couple, it’s really taken the urge away to buy another, more expensive brand that truthfully, I shouldn’t be buying anyway. Maybe that tells you how good these are for the money…
This video really helped as I’ve been considering this new moon phrase, but you’re right,, that case is just too think for the style….I guess I’ll have to save a little more for the bel canto.
Cheers Scott.... I'm seriously thinking about a Bel Canto as the watch to mark my 50th birthday in 2024. Feels like one of those watches that will become a classic and may not be replicated.
@Escapement24 I myself turned 50 this year, that moonphase was going to be my little personal milestone marker, but something about it stopped me from pulling the trigger ( the case maybe, your video highlighted the size ) it looks like it will be a 51st now with the re stock of the canto next year.... thanks for the reply.
"The moon should be left to werewolves and periods"A Murry. If you plump for a Bel Canto be prepared for a wait.
I think the wait on the Bel Canto is around 6-7 months currently isn't it?
Not sure but ordered mine Jan now due Feb 24.I don't mind however as they send regular updates.Companies like Chronode can only produce quality at a certain rate.A bit of delayed gratification.@@Escapement24
Which dial colour did you go for? Black would probably be the safe choice for me, though I am tempted by the purple
@@Escapement24 Cielo because I live in Spain and even winter skies blue.Black beak a nice match.
Fair play on shooting a video whilst opening a bottle of wine in a Barratt show home
😂 Persimmon actually
Very cool watch, but too thick for me. But quite appealing and unique for sure. Great, incisive review. I’ve subscribed!
Cheers Martin, likewise even though it's not for me I've got to give it to CW for doing something different and the quality is also very high, as you'd expect.
Glad you enjoyed the vid and appreciate the sub! 🙏 Be sure to turn on notifications too as I've got some cool content in the pipeline with some really interesting brands!
I commend them on the engineering. Aventurine is remarkably brittle and easy to break in the manufacturing process. Having one slice move under the other without looking gawdy is quite the feat.
Definitely, and you've got to applaud them for doing something different in a world full of cookie cutter dive watches (though they make a few of those too) and continuing to push the boundaries.
5:42 Telling me the Bel Canto isn't limited edition while showing me the limited edition Bel Canto 😭
The blue dial is the only one I could find any official footage of - I didn't want to steal it from another creator
@@Escapement24 I know. Not your fault. Almost every Bel Canto video is teasing me with what I can't have. Why did they make the best color limited!
@zephyr2002 I'm with you...the blue is by far the best. If I do order one it will probably be the black or purple dial, but neither can match the blue IMO 😭😭😭
Tacky
I’m just not a fan of dress watches, so I like the case, the bracelet and that beautiful dial, but the moonphase, well I guess it’s just down to personal taste. Might be alright if you are a fisherman, sailor or farmer, but then you would expect the entire watch to be more rugged than it is.
Great video! But sadly your wrist falls on no man’s land . It’s small , it’s girly and probably shouldn’t be used as standard to design watches .
What do you want him to use, a prosthetic limb?🙄
unless you are a werewolf lol
In leather it looks more intriguing. It is an art piece and most of your commenters are not artistic
Let me guess....Malbec?
Shiraz. McGuigan Black Label I think...nothing fancy.
@@Escapement24 posh to me, my Aldi rioja bows down to your superior wine selection 😂😂
You better hope not.
Yea a pointless watch
A watch for tracking menstrual cycles, as suggested by a man. I must be on the Internet.
😂
