I admire people who can own only one watch. Since the 70s, I have bought watches to commemorate specific events… wedding, birth of my kids, special trips with my family and memorable events (starting my own business). It doesn’t have to be an expensive piece… it must just capture the essence of that memory. While I don’t own a Rolex (and, honestly, wouldn’t want to), I have Seiko, Omega, Heuer, TAG Heuer, Hamilton and a solitary Tudor that document the last 50 years of my life. Looking and holding each piece takes me right back to that time, just like a piece of music does. My wife, on the other hand, has been wearing the same Citizen Eco Drive for the last 24 years while working, gardening, playing squash, and cannot understand my fascination with watches. When she asks, I just smile… 😊
They should absolutely be here and 100% deserve to be. It’s “hip” to shit on them because they’re very expensive and very hyped, and everyone wants to be a contrarian, especially towards watches that are out of nearly everyone’s price range, and are very popular. Call them overpriced all you want, but the truth is that they go for even more than the retailers sell them for, so they’re actually underpriced. They’re not just hype watches, because they’ve been incredibly popular for a very long time now, and are timeless, iconic pieces, that are also good investments. They may not have the most incredible movements ever made like an FP journe, though they’re still gorgeous, but the design language just perfectly hit the nail on the head. You said you were glad the holy trininity wasn’t here, but I wasn’t surprised at all. I’ve noticed the vast majority of watch channels are consciously avoiding mentioning those watches for fear of their audience going against them.
When I got my Ed White earlier this year, I thought I was in heaven and done for a bit... then a month later my boutique called and my Silver Snoopy came in. Now I rotate a few watches and genuinely cant decide which is best.
I just got the C1 Moonphase with aventurine dial from Christopher Ward and it is magnificent. I wouldn't necessarily say it is my "endgame" watch, there will be others, but if I had to pick out the prettiest watch in my collection it's definitely this one
Speaking of putting it all on "red", I recently became the proud owner of a Grand Seiko SBGA493 "Katana", with the red (more burgundy, actually) dial. As you so rightly put it, the "smooth sweep technology" of the Spring Drive movement is a sight to behold.
I feel like my latest pickup is my endgame watch. Seamaster Heritage in steel and Sedna gold. It’s about the best I can expect from a mass produced mechanical watch, and now that I have it (and am wearing it basically daily) anything else I see only at best triggers a “hey that’s cool…” response. Nothing else triggers an “I need this…” response.
@6:03 animation shows a column-wheel type chronograph while the Speedmaster Moonwatch has a cam-type cronograph improved from the Lemania one. Only the Speedmaster Racing has a column whel cronograph based on Longines 733, if I'm not mistaken.
I quite like the Tag Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition, but that's the ONLY one I like, and certainly NOT for almost £7K! As far as value for money goes, I don't think they do well at all, and some of their watches really do look like the sort of thing you'd find on Blackpool Market for £20.
Andrew your writing and delivery skills are second to none. May I humbly suggest a merch line featuring some variation of "my old Nan" references, lol, not sure how it would look but sure you could make something good out of it.
I thought that I had aquired my endgame watch a few times already. So I don't think that my current watches to end all collecting will really be able to do the trick either.
Am I the only one who holds those who make grovelling complimentary remarks about the bloke who makes these videos in contempt? Obviously anyone who makes content where they pose as a guru needs no reassurance as to their greatness. Behave yourselves.
Nice list - have 3 and waitlisted for 2 of your picks! The three I have are some of my most worn watches - Lange 1, Seiko 5 (Rolling Blazers) and Explorer. The new Explorer 40 is hard to take off my wrist - think Rolex have finally perfected it!
Andrew, fun video. It actually makes me feel a bit better about some of my purchases (that were on this list). Suffice to say, you have served as both pusher and Methadone clinic for my addiction. Thank you??
The Seiko 5718-8000 Chrono Counter. Like the name suggests it has a chronograph and a counter which automatically advances at midnight so it can double as a big date if you so wish. Very rare as it was only sold in the Olympic village for the duration of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
Got two of those pieces. End game means I'm over it. In which case you are fed up with the chase or you have reached peak satisfaction. Both states I envy as an end to the constant gnawing distraction of collecting. Put a gun to my head and say "choose one to have and one only" and it will a bullet or the 114270 explorer, which I already have and wear most of the time. Hmmm...maybe that's it then.
Seiko 5 Ltd Heritage as Unobtainable as a Daytona waiting list. As easy to get, as an audience with Jabba the Hut. Loved the GS end game watch. My 2014 GV Black Dial Milgauss is now the Volvo XC70 sat outside on my drive. 🤪
My end-game watch is something complicated and in a timeless design. Just like so many Patek Grand Complications. But I also had Longines budget, so I opted for the triple calendar Moonphase chronograph instead with the black dial. And boy, og bloody boy is that a stunner. On the bracelet, it's a Speedmaster for James Bond's accountant when he goes to watch a sporty tennis match, and then on a black leather strap, it's suddenly what some classy bloke would wear to an evening drink at a yacht.
Fantastic list! Curious how you think the desire for a GADA watch or a one and done collection compares to the Exit Watch featured in this video. Not sure I’d be comfortable hiking with a Kodo Constant Force Tourbillon…
No such thing as end game. I thought I got my end game watch in 2016, my wife gave me a huge budget and said shut up now. Well 6 months later I was tormenting again.
I agree with the Tag Heuer Aquaracer proposition. Especially in quartz. Looks great, well built, and it is actually robust unlike mechanical watches so you don't have to baby it. It will last as long as you want it to. I believe it has a 10 year battery life, and you can change the battery quickly and cheaply. All you have to worry about is changing the gaskets once every few years (like every other dive watch). No high servicing costs or waiting for your watch to get back from a service. The price is great for what you're getting.
Mechanical watches are very robust. Quartz watches accuracy is very dependent to temperature, more than mechanical watches. Show me a quartz watch that survived from the '70s and I'll show you dozens of mechanical watches that are 80-100 years old and still ticking.
@@seabiscuit726142 Mechanical watches are by definition not robust, especially not in comparison to quartz watches. If you knew quartz watches, you wouldn't be asking for examples of working pieces from decades ago, including the 70s, as if that's some kind of a miracle.
Easy....love anything by Lange or similar high end - but for day-to-day flex, practicality and reliability full 18k submariner. Only slight downside - is to avoid anywhere where you might encounter hoodie wearing electric scooter riders (mainly in the West End).
I thought the same with my BB GMT two years ago. Sadly, not to be - one Longines green Hydroconquest, one Tissot Seastar, one Seiko 5, and one Japan only G-Shock Frogman later, and I am still looking at watches to buy!
To me an “endgame watch” needs to cover multiple uses yet still mesmerize and never get boring. I vote for the Vacheron Overseas with blue dial (either steel or pink gold). With the interchangeable straps/bracelet it truly is 3 watches in one.
My Seiko sarb033 is going to be a lifelong friend. I've worn it daily on a brown leather strap for 8 years and it is starting to show the scratches and patina of a watch that could be handed down to the next generation and tell a story of a life of use. For me it's as beatuiful and timless as the Rolex Explorer but without the fear of being robbed or drawing too much attention. I'm currently living within sight of the Himalays and it feels right at home on my current advenutre.
So I took your advice. New York Deep was excellent, now Vessel came in the mail. Can I ask why neither have page numbers? Cost cutting or some mysterious Dan Brown type reason I have to figure out by visiting the Vatican catacombs?
The Aquaracer’s hexagonal bezel hurts my brain. The inside diameter of the bezel is a circle, the numbers on the bezel are arranged and aligned on a circle, and then the outside diameter of the bezel is a hexagon. Short circuits something in me every time I see it.
It literally hurts my soul to see a tourbillion with a dead beat seconds complication. Like, "yeah, it looks like quartz, but look when I turn it over!" /facepalm
If money was no obstacle, and I was a Hollywood A-lister who'd be considered a client worthy of such things, my pick for the last watch I get before I die would be a Cartier Masse mystérieuse.
How does Andrew keep this level of productivity while maintaining the quality of writing is beyond me.

It'd be an F P Journe (Souveraine Tourbillon pretty please) for me. But of that lot, yes, that Grand Seiko is absolutely insane.

I just got the C1 Moonphase with aventurine dial from Christopher Ward and it is magnificent. I wouldn't necessarily say it is my "endgame" watch, there will be others, but if I had to pick out the prettiest watch in my collection it's definitely this one

My grail/endgame watch would be the Lange 1 moonphase 192.025 or 029. Perfection of design and execution.
My end game would be the Lange 1815 in white gold, black dial.
I tried that watch on, and I felt a love I’ve never experienced with any other watch.
