  • An expert carpenter shows how to hang a door that is not already in a frame. ALL THE TOOLS HE USES BELONG TO HIS BROTHER WHO IS NOT A CARPENTER. This is a door that has no hinges and no knob. Dave shows how to mortise the door for the hinges, how to hang the door, how to cut the holes for the knob and how to install the knob. For more details on hanging a door that is NOT pre-hung see daveosborne.com...

      We girls can do it too! THANK YOU to all the beautiful people on youtube that share their knowledge. I'm becoming unafraid of DIY. I replaced the pump on my clothes washer a couple weeks ago. That was my most ambitious repair so far. Installed a security door yesterday. Today I'm trying out a paint sprayer to paint my porch. Watching this video because I just ordered a couple slab replacement doors. I've replace the thermostat on the heater, fixed the riding lawn mower, etc, etc. I wouldn't have the knowledge to even try this stuff without youtube. DIY saves me so much money.

    In case it keeps anyone else from making the same ridiculous mistake I did... make sure you hang the door right side up! I was so concerned about getting the mortises cut and everything else squared up correctly that I failed to realize that I had my 6 panel door upside down. The pre-drilled bore hole was awkwardly high and the 6 panel pattern was clearly meant to go the other way.
    Oh well. Live and learn! I'm going to keep it this way because it's behind a screen door on an exterior laundry room and I don't want to mess with it again.

    Don't forget the scribing spur on the Butt Marker. This sets the depth of the mortise for the hinge. And don't sharpen the butt marker from the inside. Sharpen from the exterior side of the marker ONLY. Use pencil to mark on the door with an 'H" for hinge side and "I' or 'E" for Interior and/or Exterior.

  • @Go1US1Marines
    @Go1US1Marines ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You never chisel out both mortises at the same time. That's why he had to use a hammer to get the lower hinge to freely engage (4:27 or so). Do the top one first. Hang the door on that hinge and THEN mark the edges of the lower hinge. Then cut. Good carpenters use finesse, not brute force.

    Dave, loved the video. I am a DIYer and have I learned lots from experts like yourself so that I can do things myself correctly at my home.... very few craftsmen left in construction these days. I have a question that I have had some difficulty finding the answer to and I know you know the answer and I hope you are willing to share. When I shut a door, how much of a gap should there be between the door and the doorstop? Normally I would look at one of the doors in our home but in our reconstruction, the interior doors were all changed and now that I know a bit about doors, I can what a crappy job the installers did. Many of the doors do not shut snugly and the reveals are not great. Most people won't notice these things but I do now. In any event, I sure would appreciate your suggestion.

    Doors also have a tapered edge on the strike side and a flat edge on the hinge side. It’s meant so the door fits like a wedge into the frame. That way on the swing closed the short edge clears the frame and the higher back edge makes a good contact seal. If you put it on backwards the higher edge will rub the frame every time and sometimes the door doesn’t fit depending on how tight the frame is. If the door is wide and ever needs to be ripped down a tad you always cut on the flat hinge edge, so as not to lose the factory taper. Plus the hinge edge is facing inward thus more hidden from sight to hide the ugly fresh cut.

    • @DaveOsborneDotCom
      @DaveOsborneDotCom  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you are correct with the bevel on the front edge of the door. It seems now that the space around the door is wider and doesn't need the front edge beveled. If you need the door trimmed always trim it on the hinge side, so the door lockset won't be compromised.

    • @sportscarclinic
      @sportscarclinic 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds good in theory. The problem is the taper would be facing the wrong way for one opening direction, meaning you'd have to specify right or left hand opening when you ordered an undrilled/unmortised slab. No one does that. You just take a plane and put a taper on it, if needed, which it won't be if you build the jamb properly.

    • @wrenchboostboi8994
      @wrenchboostboi8994 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sportscarclinicwhat? Lol you just turn the door around… i do interior renovations for a living and this is how door slabs are made. They have a straight edge for the hinge side, beveled edge for the strike, and come in generic sizes like 24”, 28”, 30”, 32”, etc. You orient the door as needed.

    • @sportscarclinic
      @sportscarclinic 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Turn it around so the taper is facing out? lmao
      The short side of the taper must be on the opposite side of the door as the hinge knuckle. For example, facing into the left side jamb for a right hand outswing door. Mount that same door as a left hand outswing (hinge knuckle on the opposite door face) and the opening of the taper will be facing away from the jamb. No offense, but I'm glad you're not working on my house. Tapers are applied in the field with a plane, if at all. No slab comes with a taper applied, unless you ask for it and spec. right or left.

    • @wrenchboostboi8994
      @wrenchboostboi8994 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sportscarclinicnooo, turn it upside down… its just a slab - you can orient the door which ever way is needed so taper edge and hinge side all line up. Thats the beauty of ordering slabs, you can order em in bulk and use them anywhere! Im really having trouble believing you haven’t figured this out yet if your a contractor! Lol what you’re saying is only necessary on a prefab exterior door that can’t be flipped around and such, or also for a fancier style interior door pre ordered that has panels or a window. We’re talking about a cheap slab door here… it has no top, it has no bottom. You just mark the beveled edge, mark the hinge side, orient the door as needed, cut out your hinge spots and mark where to drill your passage set in. I usually do 2”3/4. I only do 2”3/8 if we’re reusing hardware that requires it, i find it’s too close to the frame for most hands and hurts knuckles - for me anyway, i got big hands.

      @@caydenthompson1878 I can't believe it but I hung the door. I used a combo of your method and then measuring again. it wasn't perfect but it hangs, closes & all the hinges lined up with minimal adjustments. I used the old hinges for ease. I thing the bigger problem was getting the setback correct which I had to measure for. Thanks again for the tips.

    I might have missed the part when you first put the new door into the opening to line up the hinges , did you have to have it slightly off the floor?

      You'd need to get something like a couple of paint can "stir sticks" and put on top of the door (left and right) to provide a gap at the top, and then use some shims at the bottom (left and right) to lift the door up and off the ground a bit, and then mark your hinges... hope that helps.

    Question… door hinges have 2 sides. One has 3 arms and the other has 2 arms for the pins to go into…. Does it matter which side of the hinge goes on the door? I always assumed the 1/2 of the hinge with the 3 arms went on the frame as it supports the weight of the door

    Do you put something under door to lift a bit when measuring at first ?

      Yes I lift the door with the aid of a flat bar. I lift it just enough to make the proper space at the top of the door.

    I forgot the part about bending the hinge with a wrench. I couldn't figure out why the door kept springing open about 2 inches, when it was closed ever so gently without the door knob installed, DARN IT! So what I did was I placed some very thin coffee stir stick width shims behind the hinge on the frame and the door edge. It really didn't help at all nor did it get worse. I feel so dumb. I still had to add a piece of 3/8 trim the entire length on the latch side. The door frame was so far out of square, I ran into all kinds of problems. But I got it done, even tho it took me a very long time. Only 3 more doors to go...but these should be easier now! Thanks for your help.

    Also, you should try to adjust the hinges before bending them. Maybe I missed it but I didn’t see you measure how deep your hinges were in the jamb. That probably would have prevented the issue in the first place.

    What do you do if the door frame is out of square when hanging a new door?
