  • Another day in the life of an architect on the vlog today. This time, we'll look through a drawing set for a project under construction and I'll show you what I think about as I work through and draw a detail. We'll also discuss one of the most common struggles of working alone, what happens when a project is delayed, how to create a balanced practice, and I share my thoughts on the innovative business plan presentations I reviewed as a juror for the architecture business plan competition. See the view from my mid-day hike (!) and what I learned on the podcast I was listening to.
Please say hello in the comments and tell me: does your career conform to your lifestyle or is it just the opposite?
    Cheers...!

This channel embodies the real power of TH-cam for me. I wanted to be an Architect eons ago, but didn’t have the idea crystallized in my mind until long after college was over. I’m inexplicably motivated by this channel to draw, redesign my home office, record music again and even rethink my relationship with work. Thank you Eric.

30x40 Videos = inspiration, excitement, relaxation, knowledge, satisfaction... basically all the traits an architect needs..
    a zillion thanks...
A quick question.. how often do you visit project sites?

    • @30by40
      @30by40  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

kind words my friend...much respect...really appreciate your continued support...
re: site visits, my standard is once/week during construction (i usually aim for wednesdays)...but if there's something I want to keep close tabs on (a low bidder for example) it's more like 2X or 3X...I have one of those currently and regular visits keeps things running smoothly catches errors before they're too far gone...wish i could share that one on the vlog alas, the NDA!

Great video Eric, and love the insights into the opportunities for architects. We're essentially curious problem solvers and design thinkers - and I agree, our professional skillsets can be applied to so many endeavours, and make a dent in our world. Your documentation is stunning too - such a great lesson in detailing for constructability.

Well Detail drawings and assembly...are what separates common designer architects and self owned architectural practices
And on top of tht ,Eric is one who even then run a blog almost like a bespoke film maker then he is an eloquent motivational speaker all Indoor activities...
And yet he also finds time to dialogue with nature
    My compliments Eric
a lot of us we see ourselves in u now or maybe after 10 years the only thing is we have u giving us the clear routes we only need to be focused

What I love about your videos; It feels like I'm having a one on one conversation. Mark you, You cant hear my questions obviously, but somehow they end up being answered most times in the same video. Even some of the internal monologues that one wouldn't necessarily voice gets answered. One of the challenges I experience as a young designer, is a sense of loneliness; Questions like, " is anyone else experiencing the same challenges, and what safe space exists to voice said challenges and possibly work as group or solo to solve them ". I like that there is a great sense of vulnerability familiarity that really encourages my approach towards my own craft. Thank you Eric!

Hi Eric, thank you -again. This video came in the right time as I am fighting with my first real life project as an independent architect. Even if I live in London I am far away from any influencing architectural communities as I am looking after my young children.
I find this video very helpful as I am about to move to the next stage with my project. I still have to find out about hoe to deal with flood issues - a completely new subject for me. As well as I am not used to deal with the council, rules and regulation by myself, but I am enjoying the ride so far........
The Business Plan competition sounds very interesting. I wounder if you would make a video about it. I have to admit I don`t yet got to that level.
I am looking forward to see what comes next.

    Hey Eric,
My name's Jeremy, I'm a 15-year-old guy. When I was 8 years old I asked my mom "Mom, what is someone called who designs houses?". She said an architect.
Since then it's my dream to become a full time architect. I practice drawing in perspective, try different techniques, different tools. I watch content like yours. Your channel has inspired me so much. And also makes me love the art, engineering, and creativity of architecture even more. I hope to once start my own company. And put my creativity and ideas into real life structures. I want to thank you for inspiring me, and many others. And show me the ways of an architect. Do you have any tips for a young guy like me, who's dream is to become a great architect? And how to practice, and grow as a potential architect.
    With great thanks,
    Jeremy

using a rhino motorized slider with the arc head for those shots...great for time-lapses too...
sounds like we share a belief that craft can be a part of everything we do and that the life of an architect is a life of design...
still, i have much to learn...film/video making is a deep well though and i'm genuinely enjoying approaching it with an amateur's mindset...

Well said Eric...that's exactly what I believe too -- I'm a photographer but I draw inspiration (and aspiration) from everyone else but photographers. The design mindset as well as the constant striving for excellence doesn't care what vehicle it uses. I learn so much just from watching what you do as well as how you do.

Hi Eric! I'm a graphic designer and I've been devouring your series! They are extremely helpful. Will you ever do a video or series for those of us looking to work with an architect? I love learning about the process and knowing what I can do to make the process easier and more enjoyable for both parties. What options do we have when looking to build, and if we want to DIY our build to an extent are there certain terms we should be bringing up to contactors/architects? I would love to come to one with some ideas in mind but I also dont want to overstep the creative process on your end either. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks for the videos - they've been helpful in clearing my thoughts as I started my own practice at the beginning of the year. I was actually thinking about the idea of scalability through collaboration yesterday at an exhibition. Instead of bringing on new workers and expanding too quickly, or turning away a job that you may be under staffed on, I am much more interested in bringing in practices of a similar scale and focus to collaborate on the work together. Would also keep the creative process fresh.

All of your work has been a big help, the books and videos in getting my mind set right. Just a wonderful resource to go back to and remind myself that I am doing the right thing - to seize the moment. I'm doing a couple of hospitality feasibility and concept designs at the moment - and a resi conversion. The work load is fine but depending on the project timeframes and deadline overlaps, it could limit my ability to take on new work or could itself be too much. As a new design studio I am looking at all the possible paths these projects could take to try and limit/avoid having to turn anything away and I think collaboration with some other small design studios past colleagues and university friends have set up could be an option in a certain scenario.

Great video, Eric! Appreciate to see your process of detailing. 2 things - First regarding your merch, the T-shirt links to Amazon don't seem to work - no results found on Amazon page. The second thing is your statement that we, as architects, are also graphic designers. I can't agree with that at all and the fact that most of architects think so (from my experience), makes it only worse. There are so many areas of graphic design that architects use (especially regarding desktop publishing) and don't know much about, starting e.g. with typography. Being an architect is a renaissance profession for sure, but architects are not graphic designers, they simply lack both knowledge and skills to call themselves graphic designers. My opinion based on experience.

Thank you so much for you incredible videos and advice they are very helpful. Great work! I wanted to ask where you got your black ladder you have in your studio? I’ve been looking for one like it but haven’t found it yet.

cheers my friend...thanks for watching...I couldn't find a ladder I liked (at least one I could reasonably afford!) commercially so I simply made these myself...I made a little video about it, but found it a bit boring so i never uploaded it...

Hey I saw your video on how to sketch a floor plan video you made because I wanted to design my own house around the premises of what kind of Natural Disasters like wildfires, Tropical Storms and Hurricanes, maybe a tornado if conditions are just right, flooding, and humid heat that I get here in Florida.
Now I know of a guy in Pensacola, Florida who built a beach house in the shape of a dome that survived Hurricane Ivan. And that's the kind of house I want to build but I want to take his idea a step further with things like 1 foot thick concrete blocks that would slide down over windows as a storm shutters that look like they are apart of the house design when not in use. Or a dam that I could have built into my property line so that when a warning about possible flooding in my area is likely to happen I would simply flip a switch and the dam would be filled with water to form a water tight dam like a similar system did for a family in Texas last year or the year before that.

First of all, Thank you so much for your inspirational vlogs. Secondly, how is the tradition from a Psych major to architecture ? Finally, I was wondering if this trail is Jordan Pond trail. I literally just got back from Acadia and that trail looks familiar. Thanks again for your inspiring videos.

How come plans or at least details are not yet in 3D? I’m imagining something like LEGO instruction, even animated like one of those gifs of an engine going together would convey a lot more.

cheers...no staff allows me to stay lean, which in turn means i have more freedom to choose only the best work that suits my esthetic sensibilities and the life i want to live...
it's a strategic choice, but it limits the amount of work I can do in a lifetime, that's something i'm struggling with...

hello Eric ^^ have you gone to HIT record's site yet? I'm getting really weird artefacts, code text all over the place and none of the buttons seem to work. nice vid by the way :D keep it coming :) Went to madrid last week end, to finally see the new extension for the Reina Sofia museum from Jean Nouvel. blow away by the atmosphere in the central court yard. The expo was as usual. Geurinca Still gives me the chills and I discovered Eusebio Sempere. A rather striking 1970-1980s artist which plays with your mind "graphically" Had the same perception as Vasarelli to Semperes work. With a twist^^ bought his monography, very inspiring, lots to do with spacial perception and shadows. had a ball with the camera :) Say Do you never use zinc for gutters in your neck of the woods? I mean EPDM is fragile in a sense, and having a zinc gutter (folded zinc sheet) with a square section which doubles as the covering of the wooden facia would be a more long term solution no?? I remember that certain wood types have rather acidic resins that might play havoc with metal sheeting, then again, I've had varnished sheets.
