My Sketchbook, Site Diagrams + Contractor Interviews

  • The latest round of prototypes have arrived for the sketchbook I’m designing + manufacturing. In this 'day in the life' you’ll get the first look at it. I’ll also walk you through a site analysis as I build it in Keynote which I've been using for most of my presentation work lately. I love its simple, minimalist toolset.
On my daily hike I climb Pemetic mountain in Acadia national park and following that you’ll see excerpts from two contractor interviews as I search for the right builder to help construct the OUTPOST project.
My schedule prioritizes making things in the morning and managing things in the afternoon and this ensures the work that’s most important to me is completed first.

I have a question sir. When i did my internship in architect office yes a project takes a year to 2 years sometimes for a design and a year for construction. Design phase for approval matters yes it takes up to 6 months here in Cyprus but whyy they take a year for a design of a house ? And payment wise? How does it go whats the procedure ? Please lighten me up or it might be a video idea. Thank you for your awesome videos

I know this is an old video but I just wanted to say that your contents make me excited about architecture once again. I am 26 and working at a firm in Tokyo at minimum wage, for extreme hours everyday. In this productivity-oriented world, I sometimes just can't help thinking about an alternative career. Your video reminds me of why I started! Thank you.

I've been following this channel for a really long time now and I definitely believe you are one of the most professional and hard working architects I've seen... Unfortunately, we see a lot of bad professionals nowadays, only worried about getting money other than addressing society's needs and it is great to see how there still are people like you left, that actually have a big passion for what they are doing. I hope I ever become such a good architect as you are, helpful and hardworking, striving for my passion every day. Thank you so much for all of the help and lessons this channel gave me, I just finished my first year in Uni so I'm a bit emotional ahah

I am part way through watching and a thought jumped out at me. Subjects at school lived and died in my head often based the look, feel and even smell of the text books and notebooks. I have sliced and diced sketch books to get them just the right size for a trip. I never realized what I was actually accomplishing until I saw this. I’m not an architect but this subject resonates far beyond one discipline. Thank you for sharing.

The approach to this design is magnificent. It reminds me of a project I participated in while I was in grad school. I wrote the front end of a Home Environmental Control System (HECS) and it incorporated GPS position, daily solar position, historical weather conditions, forecast weather to control, HVAC, window treatments, and more.

Hi Eric, I'm currently studying a course in architecture in year 12, I'm from Tasmania, Australia so the school system is a little different I know. My current project is focusing on passive solar design and I'm working on the site analysis, so pretty good timing on the video. I found the Andrew Marsh tool extremely helpful and my teacher was thrilled when I showed them, I wonder though how you removed the background of the screenshot you took to overlay it onto your diagram, did you use photoshop or trace over the image to create your own? If anyone in the comments had some tips that would also be greatly appreciated. I love your work and it has inspired me to pursue architecture, can't wait to see your next developments on the outpost project!

If Oz is similar to NZ your local authority will have a GIS mapping website in which you can turn on/off various layers such as planning zones. services, contours. etc. You can then download/export these in various formats as images and/or vectors as an AutoCAD file to import into your drawing. Here is one such website: topofthesouthmaps.co.nz/app/

Will you develop a sketchbook with paper thick enough for watercolor and for alcohol based markers? They bleed through. If not, what brands do you like for colored sketches? Your insights and tips are very helpful.

    • @30by40
      @30by40  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That was a struggle for me because sourcing thicker paper made the sketchbooks quite costly and I wanted to keep it within a reasonable price range for students. It's all a balancing act, so I went to a heavier weight paper that was still cost effective but there's still bleed-through with alcohol based markers (unfortunately)!

I'd really be interested in a resources/ references video. I think most designers have a list of websites we catalog as our go to for answers or we use as a particular tool and I'd be cool to hear your's, whether it be the site you go to for your aerial photography or topography or just places you get some of your graphical elements for renders. I'd looked and not many designers make those type of videos but I think they have a large impact.

@@30by40 To be honest it's not a very deep cuts list. I've been on the search for a good Cad resource for city maps. CADmapper is the only one that comes to mind. More typically I end up using GIS but depending on the wealth of the community sometimes that isn't a well kept option. JSTOR for architecture publications. Flying Architecture for materials and some model and of course Fast Company and Archinect for overall cool and unusual stuff.

These were vectors pulled from a government survey...
More typically, I'll receive them in vector format from the project's surveyor though...

Hey Eric, great video as always. Im an architecture student and i wonder how much you charge for a project like this cause the reality in the place i live (a inner city in Brazil) i can never se me taking a hole year to desing a house, the ammount i could charge for a house project (as far as i know, a project like this would cost the equivalent to 2000 to 3000 US dolars) isnt enough to pay for a whole year of work

Yeah, it's kinda the "chicken or the egg" trying figure out costs before a design is spect out, it's a hard one to nail down because you're trying to put the cart before the horse out of necessity; and the contractor is grasping in the dark trying to anticipation what design/ site complexity and material schedule is likely involved while trying not to sticker shock price himself out of a job, nor come in to cheap only to sticker shock the owner with a revised price after the plans are completed.
Of course what helps a lot is to focus on contractors that have done similar types and size of projects you have in mind in the same local, this will greatly reduce the amount of unforseen obstacles and expenses; which will inturn greatly reduce the amount of contract amendments such as extra work orders and change orders.

Is there any chance you could gift us your graphics assets template you use for your site plan? Or something similar, as an architect student I would find that very helpful. Thank you:)
