I think if Corey came out on Halloween (2018) and the writers left him survive throughout the 1st movie and also Halloween Kills, then the events for Halloween Ends would’ve been more satisfying because his character develop throughout the 3 movies and it would’ve come out as a huge shocker. It would’ve been more fulfilling that way tbh

    • @austindolan7182

      hard agree.
you wouldn't have had to focus so much on corey so much here and leave michael on the sidelines for most of the movie.
kinda makes this trilogy feel very unbalanced, almost like these sequels weren't even planned when they started.

I think the stuff with Corey would've been way better if he wasn't introduced in the last movie of a trilogy. As is, his whole storyline simultaneously feels like it was rushed but also incomplete
Ends feels like it ignores a lot of the narrative and thematic setup of Kills, which just makes that second movie feel even more like it was just there to pad things out so they could actually have a trilogy.

I came out of the theater thinking he probably should’ve been introduced as Allison’s Ben Tramer in Halloween 2018. Like, have Allison crushing on him be a well known secret amongst her circle of friends and they tease her about it like with Laurie, which would then lead to things boiling over with Cameron cheating on her at the dance (and I guess give Oscar that much more to be envious about in his own pursuit of Allison). Then have Corey make a cameo appearance in Kills where he’s in costume and is almost hit by the inmate who jacked the couple’s car (a lil wink and nod to Ben’s fate in OG Halloween II), before finally going all in on his character in Ends. Hell, him just dressing up as Michael in this would be a whole ‘nother meta reference to Ben Tramer lol Idk, pre-existing connections like that would’ve helped me buy into Allison and Corey’s relationship more tbh.

I think the reaction to this has so much to do with the marketing. THEY hyped it up to be all about / focus on Laurie and Michael. When as viewers we know that is just not the case so your expectations are dashed and you spend like 90% of the movie confused wanting what the marketing promised.

The whole movie was driven by Allyson's relationship with Corey but there was no explanation about why she was immediately in love with him aside from both having trauma? Like she just immediately took his side above her grandmother's even though they just met??? I literally couldn't get past that.
Also the trilogy did not have a clear thread of if Michael Myers was a killable human or a supernatural force and this movie made that even less clear.

And Allyson was so out of character, i was shocked. Also, what was with the dancing scene? it was so confusing and out of place. I loved the concept of Corey as a character and his development, just not for a Halloween movie. I think the idea of someone accidentally killing a kid, getting let off and hated by the town until he snaps is so intriguing. I loved his character and it made me so sad when he became what the town thought he was anyways. But having that in a Halloween movie was odd and confusing and left way more questions than answers, especially for the final installment.

@@zant41 I just rewatched that scene like 10 times to see if Corey really does that (and because it's mixed with the scenes of him being pushed off the bridge it's even more hard to tell), but because there is this one frame of him seeing the door opened with the boy STANDING there and seeing the boy fall (which would've been hard if it was really the kick that pushed him off) I guess it could have been on purpose? • @zant41
      @zant41 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The point of his storyline was to show that Michael isn't unique, that he's not a Boogeyman. The evil that consumed him can also affect other people, like it affected Corey, whether it happened naturally or the town made him into a "boogeyman". It all helps with the demystifyication of Myers, which ties back with the end speech of Halloween Kills and, in my opinion, why he's so weak in the movie and can be killed

Their relationship correlates a lot with the song, I feel. Allison in Ends is the most lonely she’s been since losing all her friends and both parents. Fate, Mr. Sandman, what have you, brings her a “dream” in the form (or shape) of Corey. He’s a kindred spirit for her, with a lonely heart like Pagliacci and lots of wavy hair like Liberace. Felt like the writers were trying hard to finally give the song proper significance or meaning to the franchise. I was honestly surprised it didn’t play during the credits or something.

For me it goes Halloween 1978 (first movie), Halloween 2018 (sequel), Halloween Kills (conclusion), Halloween Ends (epilogue). To me David Gordon Green's Halloween is about the victims and not MIchael. It's about Laurie, her family and the town. I never saw these new movies with Michael as the main character. I loved Ends. It is different and not another boring copy paste Halloween movie of Michael just killing a bunch of random people.

Very unsatisfying conclusion - it felt like a completely different spin-off movie rather than a part of the franchise, and not a very strong story.

For being the end of the saga, they disregarded a lot that was mentioned in the previous movies, like why did Michael kill his sister, why he keeps going back to his family house and what is he looking at through the window. Like, those seemed very important questions at the time, and then he was just living at a sewer like just hiding and basically co existing with that other old man, but since when Michael just doesn't kill somebody? He kills everyone on his way to well, basically go to that room and stare through that window, and also it would be also meaningful to know why was he after Laurie, but also allegedly wasn't but then he was? Yes, definitely the trilogy had a lot of things that started and then were completely forgotten and left behind and felt more like a new beginning with a rushed ending that was very inconclusive, but I did enjoyed watching it; I also felt very confused and even cringed in some parts, but I liked it.
Also, I was kind of let down by the fact that Michael's presence was kind of meaningless even in the way it was cinematographically portrayed, if that makes sense.

Warning on spoilers: So I’m going to go out on a limb as someone who watches this franchise multiple times a year. I actually loved this movie. I wish Corey would’ve been the new Michael and not killed but the point is that anyone can be inspired by evil and be the new Michael. That is why it will never end. I also liked that it wasn’t predictable and it have Michael more reality…he’s freaking old by now and has to die at some point lol

I agree 100%. I understand why people were disappointed, but personally, I feel that Halloween Ends was the most low key and grounded film in the franchise since the original. Maybe because I am an old fart and prefer "slower" films over lots of action, but I like that the film took its time and didn't give us an hour of Laurie and Michael duking it out Terminator/Marvel style. The call backs were more subtle this go around, too. Loved the "Halloween 3" font for the credits and now I know why DGG said the film would have a "Christine" vibe. The cinematography was the most "Cundey-esque" of the trilogy imo. And come on, who hasn't been aching for a 'muzac' version of Don't Fear the Reaper? Wish my grocery store played tracks like that. 🤪PS: This is coming from somebody whose parents put them in therapy when they were 10 (35 years ago) because I was so obsessed with the series that they feared it might have turned me into a psychopath.

Typing this before I watch this review: was unsatisfied. Michael had little to no screen time, an extremely low kill count. (Probably his lowest in any movie. I think he killed what, 2 people?) and the final showdown between he and Laurie was extremely anticlimactic and lasted like 3 minutes. I expected bodies dropping everywhere and a fight between Laurie and Michael that was more than a quick hide and seek game for a minute and killing Michael too easily.
Edit: finished the review and it was all my same thoughts. Great review. I 100% agree.

I HATED Halloween Kills (despite loving Halloween 2018) and felt this movie changed my mind on the trilogy, enjoying it more. I felt the movie was kind of loose and showed the trilogy wasn't really planned from the get-go. The dialogues and acting were terrible, but yet I did enjoyed when it picked up the rythm and the message as a whole (evil changes form, etc).

    • @pedrohenriquesilvarizzo4766
      @pedrohenriquesilvarizzo4766 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

To clarify a little more, I thought the "mob" was too on the nose on Halloween Kills and got annoyed with mostly the whole movie being about minorities being killed by Michael. And as they progressed to this whole "he doesn't die", I felt it got too "supernatural" and just couldn't be finalized. So I liked this sub-plot in Halloween 2022 that evil is made through hate, and that it is being transferred, with Michael actually being killed.
So I left the movie more satisfied, eventhough Halloween Kills has cooler deaths, better dialogue and better characters and horror overall.

I'm really divided with this one. I wasn't going in expecting much. I had quite low expectations. I was more nervous than anything else.
And after about an hour I sort of felt my leg start tapping, and the urge to check my phone to see how long was left. The first act was just drawn out. The Corey storyline was fine for me, it just took way too long to happen and then didn't amount to much in the end. The third act should've been much longer. And Michael should've actually felt like a threat. I feel like I could've fought this version of Michael.
Overall, not the worst Halloween movie, it'll probably gain a huge cult following in the next few years, like the Rob Zombie movies have. In a ranking of the Halloween movies it'll probably place around the middle for me
Edit: I rewatched it, and I have to say. I fucking love it now. It still places around the same in my ranking, around 5th or 6th out of 12. But I just really really like it.

Firstly I actually kind of liked Halloween Ends. I think personally the problem doesn't lie with this film more so with the whole franchise. What I'm referring to is the very simple premise of the first film, and turning this very simple idea into a franchise, with an idea about a killer stalking babysitters the only way to make more films is to do something different, I feel Ends does have these different ideas. I really can't think of a way that this film would be more satisfying without it turning into the 2018 film again. Like you can't have Michael just going after Laurie again without new ideas attached to it, otherwise it's just the rinse repeat stalk, kill big fight finish that we have been getting for 40 years. To move this franchise forward 13 films in you can't keep using that same structure. I'm not saying this film is perfect by any means, I think the ideas could have been more fleshed out and explained but overall I like how it tried to do something different. Just my thoughts anyway.

Corey should have been introduced in Halloween 2018 as maybe a survivor of Michael or someone who saw people killed by him. Then he should have been in Kills again, but he now has more problems, the "darkness inside" should have been starting to come out.
Then he could be the full dark young man in Ends.
I did like the thought that the town has basically made its identity as "the home of the boogieman" and now that Michael is gone, they tried to turn another person, Corey into the new boogieman.

This movie had SO MUCH potential. When Corey died the movie ESCALATED and became beautiful. It almost brought tears to my eyes seeing Alison and Laurie fight and that was what they should have focused on. They didn’t even care ONE bit about Karen. Personally, I would have followed Laurie and Alison as Alison falls into depression, shutting off. She constantly argues with Laurie and soon we see she is haunted by her mother’s memory (Karen makes psychological cameos throughout the movie talking to Alison). Murders start to happen which throws Laurie away from her peace. She and Hawkins investigate and their relationship builds. Alison meets a new toxic guy who is obsessed with Michael, turning into a copycat, similar to Corey. Then the conflict between Laurie and Alison about Laurie hunting down and killing Corey comes in and Alison also blames Laurie for letting her mom die. Alison leaves like she did. And I guess I like the idea of a rundown Michael but I feel like they could have played on Michael being creepy and actually a shadowy figure in sewer. I could see a scene where Laurie chases Corey into the skewer and ends up fighting against Corey and Michael. Michael ends up killing Corey and stalks Laurie. Meanwhile Alison is still upset so she is driving away. And basically the end of the film could still play the same way it did (Just ending the film with a funeral for Karen and showing how Alison accepts her trauma and goes out to finish Michael with Laurie). I also like a finale showdown in a sewer between Laurie and Michael and I think they could even include the humorous kid from 2018 and do a dynamic with Lindsey and him and they talk about being hunted as a kid with Michael and the audiences could have got laughs from that. But Corey gets to them and to raise stakes he kills them both because he is trying to honor Michael. Basically the message is that even though Michael has gone missing the trauma he left behind destroyed everyone’s lives. Michael was more than a night time story but a curse of haddonfield. He left a mark on Laurie for years and years, even taking her daughter. He took Alison’s innocence from her and his evil infected Corey’s mind even if he was lurking in the dark. Lindsey could have fallen into drugs which is why she decided to open a public. Michael isn’t ‘t powerful because he can snap your arm in one go. He is powerful because he could haunt you from just the memory of his evil haunting eyes.

I wish they combined characters with Corey and her Allyson’s love interest or his friend in the first film or at least originally introduced Corey earlier in the trilogy. He seems so misplaced and the whole movie feels like Corey is Peter in og Spider-Man 3’s Venom plot with no redemption arc and then Laurie and Michael fighting at the end for 10 minutes. What happened to the whole plot of “Michael not caring about Laurie”?

I'm definitely in the minority, but I have to admit: despite some of its storytelling problems, I really loved this one. The ambiguity, the sense that The Shape is ever-present and just waiting for an opportunity to enter someone new, since it's being held back by its aging host. I'm sure the series will continue, probably under a new studio and a new continuity, but I'm glad they experimented with this trilogy. Great review, and even though I landed on it a bit differently, I really appreciate your insights on all things horror.

Also, Michael has came across so many bad people but he senses darkness in Corey who accidentally killed a kid?!? It wasn’t on purpose. He would sense darkness similar as him in someone. Michael being bullied was laughable. Reminds me of resurrection when Busta Rhymes was yelling at Michael. I did like that Laurie got a happy ending.

They could have added the end of it to 'Kills' and it would have made a great duologu. Now...I did enjoy 'Ends' but it felt far removed from the original, and have my own theory about C and Myers in this version. Both of their initial murders happened on Halloween and there is the entire 'spirits of the dead' / samhain lore on that night. But anyhow part of me wanted something more traditional.
