Movie is great but wish more happened after the twist reveal. The father seduction doesn't work at all in this movie because Esther is his daughter and not adopted as in the first movie. So they kind of tip toe around it. First movie is better and more suspenseful but they do a great job of not making the same movie but with different family. I was pleasantly surprised by this one!

I'm glad to hear they did some CGI de-aging in this film. It worked well for The Irishman. I would riot if they chose someone other than Isabelle Fuhrman to play Esther.
I don’t recall the directors saying anything about using CGi to de-age Isabelle Furhman that they just made everyone taller or used ramps. All of that was practical No cgi whatsoever
I watched it Friday night and absolutely loved it! I love it as much as the first. I watched it again last night, and it was fun picking up on some of the subtle hints regarding the twist that I missed the first time around. My dad watched it with me last night (his first time seeing it), and he loved it too.
I had my preservations when I heard this movie was going to be a prequel. In the horror community we can't really say we have the best track record in terms of horror prequels. So I went in expecting it to be generic, I thought Esther was just going to infiltrate this family pretending to be their missing daughter. I thought she'd manipulate the mother, seduce the father and then kill them all in the end, and end up in the orphanage. But as the movie went on I found it really enjoyable, and the twist really solidified it for me. I'm glad that this movie was made, and I'd be happy to see another movie, maybe in the form of Esther going to another family before the events of Orphan (2009), OR, even before she ends up at the Institute in the first place. Well done to everyone that worked on this movie, and especially Isabelle Fuhrman. Esther is now officially a slasher icon
I just watched it yesterday on Paramount+ and enjoyed it. It reminded me of the Nicholas Barclay true crime case where a full grown conman took a missing boy's place and pretended to be him, and there were theories that the family knew it wasn't really him but pretended they thought it was because they already knew the real boy was dead.
I absolutely loved it with the halfway twist and how the two evils for obvious reasons collided in away u kinda want to cheer for Esther but then I remember it’s a prequel and u know what’s coming for the family
Great point about her really being a grown woman pretending to be a child vs. the opposite from the first one. I hadn’t thought about it that way. I am going to check it out. 😊
Knowing how childlike she looked in the first movie, I did have a hard time suspending belief in the prequel because even with de-aging her appearance was definitely that of a grown woman. I still enjoyed this movie, but my mind kept wandering to the fact that she didn't look like a child.
Loved it! Did not see the twist coming at all. Julia Stiles did an amazing job! So nice to see her in a movie again! Did not expect to like this as much as I did!
I flippin loved the twist!! Loved Julia Styles for the same reason. I watched it then restarted and watched it again just to focus on Julia styles knowing what was to come. Definitely one of my new “background” movies.
i loved that picture of everyone wearing those herman munster-esque platform shoes it made me laugh so hard

As soon as the twist was revealed, the first thing that came to mind was the parallels to the Jonbennet Ramsay case. And I agree with you-it's a comfy movie 😅 It's safe trigger-wise, it's at this point a nostalgic movie, and the humor isn't obnoxious (which is usually the case for me with humor in horror movies).
I'm glad people like it since Esther/Leena is an interesting character, but I just felt indifferent to this. I wish they had given more time to the bitch-off between Esther and Julia Stiles' character which was by far the most interesting aspect of the film. I would like a prequel about the real "first kill" she did (refered to by the photos in this and the original), although I guess it will be difficult not to hate her then, especially considering what is implied.
I LOVED this movie! I watched Orphan for the first time yesterday and First Kill today. The twists are wild and they’re so well made! I’ll be rewatching both many times.
I’ve been watching your videos for 9 years now, and you’ve come a long way since then. It’s like I’ve watched you grow up, Congratulations on the pregnancy!
Even though I kinda saw the twist coming with this one, they pulled it off pretty good and it was unintentionally funny at points cuz they're both trying to outwit each other also whenever Esther messed up being a child and her reaction on messing up. I actually really like Esther in this one, maybe cuz they made her almost the "hero" cuz of what is revealed. I really like cinematography too ,same person who did 'Possessor which has that "comfy" feeling to it, funny that you said it was comfy cuz at one point in the movie I was like " this movie is oddly relaxing to watch " lmao
I thought it made perfect sense that she looked more grown up in the prequel also because this was the first time she went with a family and tried to make herself look like their daughter, I took it as if she got better and perfected her disguise in the first movie 🙌 Also the fire and the way her family dies is mentioned in the first movie and we see a painting of hers with the house burning in her room so that's really cool that we got to see it in this one.
I loved this one way more than the first. Very much so worth the wait but I do agree that Esther would’ve been a more hard hitting title especially since the dead daughter was called Esther as well. Julia stiles did such a great job in this film also I did not expect her to play a role like this so well
A worthy sequel. Esther is still creepy as hell! All the practical effects and camera tricks they used to make her look like a child all these years since the original was extremely well done. The twist in this was great.
i didn't like it as much as the first one but i love that they fully committed to isabelle fuhrman as a grown adult still playing esther. lots of fun camera tricks and, like you said, wardrobe choices to work around that. i thought that was pretty neat.
Actually the "The Story of Love" song, is a song Esther sings at the Alternate ending of the movie. So I loved the fact that she listens to this song in the movie.
I just watched this film the one part that got everyone was the moment that the mum fell from the roof the whole audience gasped, no one expected her to die like that and it was such a tense moment as well. I really enjoyed the film tbh and it was a good prequel to the original film.
I actually really loved the movie and Esther/Leena has always been my favorite horror character and her actress did amazing even though she was 23. Maybe one day, we’ll get something that will show how Esther became the way she is.
I liked the new orphan! I liked the way it ended even though it was predictable. In the first movie she has a painting of a house that is on fire under the uv light so I was glad to see they brought that back.
I think ORPHAN was the most underrated movie since THE THING. I’m looking forward to seeing the prequel, though I agree that ESTHER would have been a better title. No ORPHAN-related movie would be worth watching without Isabelle Fuhrman. Good to see Julia Stiles in a major movie again as well.
this movie was SO good! i watched it last night with medium expectations since i adore the first one so much & i loved every second of it :) it was so fun as well they made it so perfect for what it was :D
Agreed with you as I usually do. Another thing I picked up on was in the beginning when she was watching Shirley Temple, she clearly picked up on that speech pattern for the first movie. Especially noticed it with how Shirley said “daddy”.
Tbh I loved it just as much as the first one. Its so different. I feel like it's rare we see this whole 2 evils against eachother thing. Esther is easily one of my fav slasher icons. Would love an Orphan: Origins movie
My biggest qualms were that we obviously knew she’d win with it being a prequel, but it would’ve been more justified had it shown how she ended up even in the asylum to begin with to me. Hopefully the potential 3rd does that for us. Alongside that, the house burning down scene to me was clearly a cardboard cut out house, and when I looked it up it was exactly that. Other than that I was honestly really happy with it. Very hard to do a prequel well, so well done to them. Especially Isabelle and Julia! Their dynamic was really fun to watch.
I wish we saw Esther childhood with her abusive father , as well as the first family we saw as apparently this isnt the first time Esther does this as the beginning would tell you as well as the boys with scissors. As why couldn't this be the family that was in the picture of her last family during the secreat scene in the first movie
Honestly I liked this movie a lot. As a fan of the first one it did what needed to be done. I wished they would had let Tricia live since her character was my favorite. It would had made for a nice actual sequel since they want to make it a franchise.
In France the title is actually Esther 2 ! I'll be seeing it on Tuesday, so I rewatched Orphan the other night to refresh my memory. It definitely was not as good as I remembered it being, so I'm tempering my expectations for this one, but I'm hoping I can just turn my brain off and have a fun time.
I would love to see a pre prequel and see her time as an actual child, her origins, parents, her reaction to the condition, her actual first kill. Instead of sequels, make prequels. That would be an interesting direction
both movies give me The Good Son vibes more 1st kill then orphan with the well and fall scene. and i loved that. It was a solid movie and i did end up feeling bad for ester half way thru!!!! lots of cool easter eggs tooo.
The plot twist was great and totally unexpected. Also, as a Mom I cannot eat food while I watch horror movies anymore. It’s very odd. So, watch out for that possible change too. ;)
They even mentioned in the original that Esther’s original family died in a house fire. Predictable since the prequel was announced haha. Besides that I enjoyed seeing Esther on the big screen again after so many years and definitely have to watch the original again. Some of the cgi during the roof and fire sequence felt so flat and cheap looking but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Also the poor mother had to fall 2 stories on her back in both the Omen and this movie, legend.
I also prefer the Esther title but I see and understand that they wanted to make a more stronger tie to the first one considering it's been thirteen years.
I love this movie. I really loved the first one and I really liked this one as well. I think Esther is a better fit for a title as well. I whole heartedly believe that the brother killed real Esther on purpose because of what he said to impostor Esther. That he was gonna put her in the same hole he put his sister in.
I watched this film almost when it came out, I specifically went to the cinema to watch it and I liked it, but the first one was more scary, but the second part did not show itself badly enough. If that the first song is called Evil by Interpol😉
I do agree about the title. The beginning of the movie it's implied she killed a family before she was in the institution so that's technically her first kill & if they do another movie they can do that story so I believe the movie should have been called Orphan : Esther
Before the twist I kept thinking that it would have made more sense if Ester just said the time away made her memory cloudy and that's why she kept being wrong about finer details
At first, I was thinking this is going to be the same thing we already watch but earlier in the timeline. Then the twist happens, and it was a pleasant surprise.
I do agree mostly on what you said. Also, I do agree on the tone of the movie being way more light than the first one, who made it enjoyable. I re-watched the first movie not long ago, and the tone of that movie was so "cold" and serious.. While this one is a little bit more goofier and funny? I don't know. Solid movie :)
I enjoyed this movie a lot as well. I especially loved seeing Esther sweat! That mama and son duo had her shaking in her mary janes! I also liked seeing her fumble pretending to be the actual Esther because of how hasty she was to appear as the original Esther. The first movie, her job was a little easier because she wasn't pretending to be the missing child of the family, she could start fresh, but she in my mind seemed a little more methodical and it was definitely clear that she took the advice she was given from this mom. Spoilers: The only thing I didn't like was the ending. I felt like Esther wasn't really too active in the family's demise like I would have liked. The mom was so cold and calculating, though, maybe I can see how she wouldn't be able to do that like she could in the first movie, where the mother's frazzled and grieving, the father's dismissive, and the children are a little too young to be able to do anything. In my head, when watching The Orphan, Esther was always flicking a match, throwing it at the house, and in the house there were bloody bodies everywhere! In this, she and the mother were fighting and the stove somehow turned on. Esther killed the son, but the mother couldn't hold on to the ledge so she fell, then the husband found out she wasn't who she said she was because he squeezed her cheeks so hard her false teeth came out and he was so taken aback, he literally took a step back off the roof. I laughed at that, but I was a little disappointed. I'd still rewatch, and I'm definitely gonna buy it on DVD if I see it.
We know about the fire from the first film, the Estonian Dr tells the mum. Fire is a handy closer in horror films so I dont mind it, but yeah it's not a surprise when something sparks up now, might be nice to subvert it somehow
Having a soft spot for early 2000's horror, I thought this was right up my alley including the choice they made with the color grading. I found it more fun than the first actually, and thought all the clever ways they tried to hide her age (including the obvious ones) were actually neat. Felt the heart that went into this and its definitely a film ill be thinking about. So glad they put this in theatres in the UK, I was disappointed when I had initially thought I would need to see it on streaming.
Suspenseful thriller with a twist. At one point you feel bad for Ether on how the family plotted vengeance on her. We all knew how the film was going to end. That's the thing with presequal's
Is it odd that sense I seen orphan the first time at like 9 that was my comfort scary movie and I could recite it line from line and to this day was still my favorite to a point my mom was concerned and this movie was so exiting for me something i never knew we’d get lmao. And I def was rooting for Esther in this one 😂😭
The only thing that bugged me was that in the original, the man at the Saarne Institute was aware of her killing the family and burning down the house. How did he know this? Are we to assume there were more families between this and that's how they caught on? Just a little plot hole that I noticed, but otherwise, movie was great! Orphan is one of my favs so I was excited about this!
they’re was a family before that one in first kill i remember them saying. but i assume in the first one they kinda traced it all back after realising cuz they’d have paperwork on her. i’m guessing
I really liked it!!! I didn’t like how they were kind of making fun of her disease. I liked it way better than the original. I gave it a 9/10 and 4.5/5⭐️
loved this one honestly. im a fan of isabelle so ive been anticipating this for a while, i went to see it on release day at the cinema with my friend and it was just so much fun lol. i didn't expect the twist at all, and i was surprised by how much humour there was in it, mostly the back and forth between esther and the mom and how both of them know each other's secrets but can't tell, it just made it fun to me and a lot of scenes got big laughs from the audience (which doesn't really happen often here in the uk i think?) it just made the film really enjoyable and i really get what you mean about it being a "comfy" horror LOL. i think the og is a better movie, but this one is more rewatchable and honestly probably more enjoyable. but then again i just like a sprinkle of fun/camp in my horror haha
oh also, GREAT point about how this movie makes more sense to us as an audience now because of how isabelle IS a grown woman pretending to be a child. it's great to see the character fully realised. there were a lot of moments in this one where you can really see esther's thought patterns while pretending/lying which we don't really get in the OG. obviously isabelle's a lot more mature now than she was back then and she really brought that maturity and depth to the role which was great to see.
I agree with your opinion about the title because the movie more focuses on the kid's name Esther and also the First kill in the title doesn't really match up because is not her first kill, she already killed a family before as shown in the beginning. Also this movie is a stand alone movie the only connection with the first orphan was just esther the kid, like? So I agree with your opinion that Esther should have been a great Title rather than Orphan:First Kill
I absolutely loved it. Esther deserves to be a slasher icon. I wouldn’t mind another movie.

I don’t recall the directors saying anything about using CGi to de-age Isabelle Furhman that they just made everyone taller or used ramps. All of that was practical No cgi whatsoever
@@BrandonJames2016 oh well. I'm just glad that they didn't recast the role.
She looked old! It was laughable she would pass for a 10/11 yr old w her face
@@brandylusicic8426 she’s 25… that’s not old
I watched it Friday night and absolutely loved it! I love it as much as the first. I watched it again last night, and it was fun picking up on some of the subtle hints regarding the twist that I missed the first time around. My dad watched it with me last night (his first time seeing it), and he loved it too.
"She's a maniac, MANIAC on the flooorrrr..."🎵🎶🔥
I too had some Preservatives!
@@BwAaS 🤭😂😂
I almost lost my mind when I heard Evil by Interpol (the song is actually based on Fred and Rosemary West). It was a nice bit of foreshadowing.
I noticed the son was not happy or surprised his sister returned. That was a red flag
I loved it and I wish they make more prequels because Esther/Leena is such a complex and interesting character
They probably didn't call it Esther as that's the name of the 1st movie in other languages. I'm French and it was called Esther
Me and my bestie did not see the twist coming at all we were shook!
Wasn't predictable at all. Anyone who likes intense movies/thrillers watch this movie.
I thought it made perfect sense that she looked more grown up in the prequel also because this was the first time she went with a family and tried to make herself look like their daughter, I took it as if she got better and perfected her disguise in the first movie 🙌
Also the fire and the way her family dies is mentioned in the first movie and we see a painting of hers with the house burning in her room so that's really cool that we got to see it in this one.
i watched it yesterday in theaters and absolutely loved it! another amazing plot twist!
Was so excited when I heard about this coming out, Orphan was my first horror movie
Actually the "The Story of Love" song, is a song Esther sings at the Alternate ending of the movie. So I loved the fact that she listens to this song in the movie.
I loved this video because I thought I forgot my glasses but I don't wear glasses Lol I love you Sarah 😊💜
It wasn't as good as the first one, but I enjoyed it Esther was good in her performance, including Julie styles, but I wasn't expecting that twist
The Thing 2011 was amazing in my opinion
Honestly loved the movie. Great twist and great story. Definitely would love to watch these back to back
this movie was SO good! i watched it last night with medium expectations since i adore the first one so much & i loved every second of it :) it was so fun as well they made it so perfect for what it was :D
Agreed with you as I usually do. Another thing I picked up on was in the beginning when she was watching Shirley Temple, she clearly picked up on that speech pattern for the first movie. Especially noticed it with how Shirley said “daddy”.
The soundtrack is called the glory of love & Esther/Leena used to sing it in the first movie
Tbh I loved it just as much as the first one. Its so different. I feel like it's rare we see this whole 2 evils against eachother thing. Esther is easily one of my fav slasher icons. Would love an Orphan: Origins movie
Loved both movies! Isabelle Fuhrman is criminally underrated, so is Esther/Leena
Great review. I personally think it would have been interesting to have like an actual origin story for Esther.
I love how it wasn't a replicate of the first one, it was actually really unique.
omg i was waiting to hear what you thought about it! i loved it! definitely a cozy rewatch movie for me!
I’ve been waiting for this review!!!
I loved this movie, and didn't see the twist coming 😂
the blur in this video is actually an artistic choice
Before the twist I kept thinking that it would have made more sense if Ester just said the time away made her memory cloudy and that's why she kept being wrong about finer details
Top gun and orphan, two awesome additions that I didn't think we needed and they were great. I'm glad we were able to watch in theaters today.
Solid movie :)
love the random big brother shoutouts
I enjoyed this movie a lot as well. I especially loved seeing Esther sweat! That mama and son duo had her shaking in her mary janes! I also liked seeing her fumble pretending to be the actual Esther because of how hasty she was to appear as the original Esther. The first movie, her job was a little easier because she wasn't pretending to be the missing child of the family, she could start fresh, but she in my mind seemed a little more methodical and it was definitely clear that she took the advice she was given from this mom.
Spoilers:
The only thing I didn't like was the ending.
Orphan First Kill was a killer movie. Loved it. "Hello Mommy."
I watched it on streaming yesterday. I enjoyed it. Great review
*I do no not believe in the glorification of murder but I do believe in the empowerment of women*
I thought it was the nun at the orphanage who told the family about the house fire? I remember it being “the Sullivan house fire”.
@@cnp5336 i’m pretty sure in the first one someone had a call with that man and he explained it
i loved this movie sm. it was similar enough to the first one for it to feel familiar but different enough to feel fresh and interesting.
I really liked it!!! I didn’t like how they were kind of making fun of her disease. I liked it way better than the original. I gave it a 9/10 and 4.5/5⭐️
Yeah they need to chill on the ableism a bit but other than that it was dope
It's a movie...
loved this one honestly. im a fan of isabelle so ive been anticipating this for a while, i went to see it on release day at the cinema with my friend and it was just so much fun lol. i didn't expect the twist at all, and i was surprised by how much humour there was in it, mostly the back and forth between esther and the mom and how both of them know each other's secrets but can't tell, it just made it fun to me and a lot of scenes got big laughs from the audience (which doesn't really happen often here in the uk i think?) it just made the film really enjoyable and i really get what you mean about it being a "comfy" horror LOL. i think the og is a better movie, but this one is more rewatchable and honestly probably more enjoyable. but then again i just like a sprinkle of fun/camp in my horror haha
oh also, GREAT point about how this movie makes more sense to us as an audience now because of how isabelle IS a grown woman pretending to be a child. it's great to see the character fully realised. there were a lot of moments in this one where you can really see esther's thought patterns while pretending/lying which we don't really get in the OG. obviously isabelle's a lot more mature now than she was back then and she really brought that maturity and depth to the role which was great to see.
I predicted the twist 😉😂....I actually liked it....was it spectacular?? 🤷🏽♀️ no lmao....campy crazy fun.....it is what it is😯
