Here the thing I noticed is insecure people tend to say that kinda stuff. I only tell someone when they ask for an opinion. These guys doing covers were giving "pointers" to my guitar player who has played for over 15 years.
Dear Rhett, as a singing professor with a master's degree in solo singing, I think you're being too hard on yourself. You sound pretty solid my man, at least from what I heard in this video. I would argue that singing backing vocals is often harder than lead, depends on a lot of things but let's say backing harmonies are trickier to hear sometimes. Anyway, all you need is a bit confidence, repetition and practice, as well as singing in front of others and as scary as that is for many singers, it does help a lot. Heck, I've done a lot of different gigs and concerts, one of which had about 4000 people and it's always challenging to not get eaten up by insecurity or stage fright, but interestingly enough, I find it easier sometime to perform like that than to sing in front of my father for example. Just this weird respect I have for him, and he knows a lot about music so it's kind of hard to relax beside him. Anyway, I really love your videos, and if you wanna hop on a Zoom call with me, we can chat a bit and do a lesson, I could show you a few tips that you might find useful. Free of charge of course, since I really enjoy your content. Take care!
I've been playing guitar for 26 years and haven't done much singing in front of others until a couple years ago. H of the Stage is right when harmonies are tricky to pick out, but over the last couple years, I've gotten a little better at hearing them. Singing with supportive musicians is a huge help to get over oneself. Keep going and you'll be just fine.
As someone that’s been singing a while, I’d be scared shitless singing behind Noah, so trust me when I say, you’re doing damn fine my friend. It’s a constant practice, just like guitar, you’ll never be able to do everything, but you’re doing damn good dude. All my love.
I get what you're saying, but I wouldn't. Noah has a voice of an angel. What makes an angel more relevant than a bunch of broken souls baking it up? I call it the 'Human Choir"
Rhett, I find your honesty with your audience and yourself disarming and a big part of how people connect with you (apart from your awesome guitar playing 😁). Don't beat yourself up about your singing, you're doing great...like with everything else, it's about the journey. You'll get there in time. Keep on rockin!
Love the text at the end of this video. “Real” is infinitely better than other directions you could’ve gone. It’s the curse of creatives to live in self-doubt, etc. but it’s immensely encouraging to see someone who’s thought of as very talented share their concerns. Very brave decision. Respect.
@@AGM124PGT maybe. I watch a lot of his vids and know he doesn't usually sing. And like I said I can def tell he is holding back and singing with some caution. But it was really moving to see him singing and overcoming that fear. Good stuff.
I personally feel like backup vocals like you are doing are the perfect introduction to singing because the attention isn’t so much on you as it is on the lead singer which gives you the freedom to gain your confidence at your pace and get used to singing into a mic! When I started singing I was really nervous but luckily I did backup vocals at the time while playing drums and learned how to control my range, volume and tone and didn’t have the pressure of having all the attention on me. So once I switched to lead vocals and rhythm guitar in a different band I was ready. you got this Rhett 👍
I'm fifty years old. I've been playing since I was 12 years old. I've learned more from you in a year than I would in 10 years of noodling. I've never taken a stage as part of a band. You have it going on Rhett. Keep twangin an twistin buddy. You guys are on the verge of breaking through
One thing I had as a comfort of singing backup vocals is that the focus isn't all on you. You're not the main vocalist, you're a compliment to them. Yes, the 2 man show puts a little more importance to what you do, but the main focus for vocals won't be on you unless you're singing lead
I found out, playing guitar in bands for over 30 years, that the most important thing is to have fun. A crowd can sense when you are enjoying yourself, and they will too. As for singing backup, it took me awhile to be comfortable with it, but once I got over the “they’ll think I stink”, it became something I really enjoyed doing. 👍
I dig your voice, Rhett! Own it! As a singer and player myself, it’s really hard to think about so many things at once, but you’re doing really well! Keep at it!
Hey Rhett I’m a sophomore in music college and my major is guitar performance and to see you talk about the way you have no confidence in your singing inspired me so much!! I struggle with my vocals too and the fact you keep pushing and trying to be better is awesome!! Thanks for the awesome vids!!
Rhett, I am very glad you posted this video. Many (good) guitar player wish they could sing but are too shy or afraid for letting hear THEIR voice, not only on the guitar. I hear you have a good potential good voice. All you need is training (with a good vocal teacher) and practice, just in the way you became a very skilled and talented guitar player as you are right now. Keep in mind: maybe there will be a day you will step forward and be the frontman of the band/your own band. You deserve it if that is what you want. I am 61 now and I was always intimidated and afraid to sing. I finally took the step and got me a good vocal teacher. I sing now and write my own songs. I think I have something to say too. Your friend is an amazing singer but it took him also some time to reach his own level. Good luck!
keep these videos coming, its one of the primary reason I love to come to your channel and see the struggling, human side of you which gradually learns, sometime falter and other times overcomes. dude, love your content, keep it going!
There was absolutely nothing bad or ugly about this video, please keep doing what you're doing. Also, whenever I watch your videos, I get motivated to pick up my guitar and practice, so thanks ☺️👍
I really, really appreciate the honesty of this video, Rhett, and others that you've done. This is so helpful - and that can't be just me. I've never been happy singing either. I've taken lessons in the past, and they did make a huge difference, but I then still always avoided it so I never capitalised on it, which is a shame. I don't know why I thought everyone else that sings was comfortable with it and wasn't experiencing the same struggle. Duh. Anyway, sounded great. And as someone else on here said, singing behind Noah would intimidate most people - what a great voice he's got. All the best - looking forward to more of these videos, and maybe I'll finally take a plunge and agree to do vocals when we all get back out there.
These are the videos I love to see! Watching musicians grow and not be afraid to make a video about it makes me feel a lot better, then when I watch musicians who are always “perfect”. These videos are a blessing and a joy to watch as a growing musician
I'm glad you're sharing these with us! I think the better a musician's ear becomes, the harder it can be sometimes to sing harmony and it sound good. You can tell how the tone of your voice doesn't match, even when you're singing the right notes. Some things I've found that help me are always making sure my abs are flexed while singing, focus more on singing the ooo, aahh, eehh, while letting the lead really do most of the pronouceation and character of each word, taking deep breaths before each phrase, and making sure my eyebrows are raised and my mouth is open. If my abs aren't tight, if my mouth is "squinting," I'm running out of air too soon,, or whatever.. it all conveys through tone and can be heard as flat or just off pitch. A really talented singer uses every bit of their breath, mouth shape, etc to control their tones.. that's why Noah sounds so great and can convey the soul and passion. I've got absolutely NO doubt you'll continue growing in every aspect, Rhett! Don't be discouraged.. be excited for what your musical future holds, grab it by the balls, and hang on! Sending peace & love from Missouri -Todd
Your voice is sounding good, man! It's honestly really heartening to hear a musician on your level admit to struggling with singing. Makes me want to get better myself!
Well done Gentlemen! Glad to see you guys back out doing what you love! Rhett you play fabulous! Ease up on yourself; the singing will get easier and easier! Find your comfort zone and build from there! Be safe on the roads!
Hey Rhett, i don't usually comment in TH-cam, but i really love these kind of Videos (Even more than yout usual vids). It feels Like the real deal to me. You and Noah Sound absolutely wonderful together. ( i really really Liked the harmony singing) Very impressive!! All the best fromm Austria
thanks for posting even if you’re not totally comfortable, it’s so refreshing to see a real view and not just a highlight reel. when I was learning to sing harmony, singing along to music loud enough I could just barely hear myself was actually helpful in getting confident and feeling my voice out. That, and believing the people around you that you do really sound good and are improving.
I'm working on learning to sing, too. I bought a beginner's online course that teaches proper breathing and doing vocal sirens. It's not much, but it'll strengthen my vocal instrument every day until I find a coach. I've noticed that my range has improved: the transition between my vocal break to falsetto is so much smoother. Which really excites me; all I want is for no one to think I sound bad. If I get there, I could just go out with a guitar and sing all day without any apprehension.
I can really relate to your position, singing behind a great singer when you don't feel confident in your own singing ability. I thought you sounded great supporting Noah though. Harmonies add so much to a performance when they are done well and having the ability to sing backup harmonies is such an asset as a sideman or band member. This was an entertaining and encouraging video -- glad you uploaded it!
I don’t know if I have ever really noted a talented human being stripping bare their own self conscious hang ups. It is amazing to see you lay your questions out for aspiring artists to acknowledge and embrace. Another great video. Another great performance. Really hope you end up anywhere in the vicinity of Detroit this year so I can support your efforts. Keep it up. You are encouraging and supporting a boat load of artists trying to sort this stuff out. And damn you are a versatile player. Inspiring bro. Truly.
No confidence? Brother, I've been playing and singing for over 15 years, and you do better vocal harmony than I do. I always have to "search" for them, most of the time I just double the melody of my singer. You're doing great at it, especially for how long you've been working on it.
Being a shy singer in public myself I can totally understand your hesitation and doubts regarding singing in front of a crowd, especially having Noah as the frontman. BUT you‘re voice sounds great! Keep it up and you will be as confident as Noah in front of people
Rhett your voice sounds very nice, very singersongwriter type voice. I like it. I struggle with the same ting, and even though people have praised my singing I always lack the confidence to sing infront of people unless Im a couple beers deep. Im a guitar player before im a singer and songwriter so i use my guitar plauing hability to boost my confidence and the singing kinda comes second. You are good you'll only get better. cheers mate.
Reminds of my first guitar teacher. He told me, bare in mind I was twelve at the time, that I will never be able to play guitar. Stopped playing but picked it up three years later. Now, at just shy of thirty, I can play that fool under the table.
Rhett, thank-you for your posts, and for inspiring me. Keep singing. As you say there is no plan B. You're makin' it happen, not forsaking your music to be a truck driver 'cause it "pays the bills". I've got callous on my fingers again 'cause of you and all my bro's & sis' on you tube!
Your singing sounds fine, keep at it. Everyone starts somewhere. I'm trying to learn too, and find it especially hard, because I always feel like I'm nailing it while singing, then listening back to the recording, it's a different story. We're all our own worst critics though.
I was ripping up "Don't Worry Baby" by the Beach Boys one day on the way home from the bar, so when I got home I recorded myself. When I played it back, it was truly horrendous! God awful sounds!
Dude keep singing, I can STRONGLY relate. When you started singing I said “holy shit” out loud! Didn’t expect that sick singing voice to come out of you! Keep it up man, you got this!
I think your harmonies sound awesome dude just have faith in yourself you are a big inspiration to me! You’ll overcome your self-doubt I‘m 100% sure of that (I struggle with the same kind of singing issues even though most think I’m pretty good at it I’m too shy and anxious to go all out)
Good on you Rhett. It’s very brave of you to show vulnerability, we all have it. It made this video very humane, and I appreciate it very much. And btw - you sounded great together.
Rhett, I know exactly where you are coming from. I was a working musician all through college and there was no bigger critic than myself. I remember stressing through things the audience or even my band would never pick up on and mostly it took showtime to have it all click and lock in place - but it did - it always did. Good luck buddy, love the videos.
Please keep sharing these videos! You inspired me to do my own “version” in this vlog style but you alone made me realise how important it is to see all side of the musicians life and seeing the up, downs, good and bad is 100% why I come back each video! You’re smashing the vocals, trust yourself!
Yeah, the vocals sounded great to me. Don't be intimidated by singing with Noah. Sure, he's great but it sounds much better with your harmony than it would with just his lead vocal. You'd be able to tell that yourself if it wasn't you that's singing the harmony. And none of this is any slight to Noah's vocals which I think are excellent
That is what I thought to almost 50 years ago when I started. But the band had 1 rule, everybody sings! I was more nervous singing than playing, after awhile it goes away. Support from people around you helps too! Best luck to you!! 8) --gary
The harmonies sound good Rhett. While I’m a complete stranger, I don”t bash peeps on YT. I just wouldn’t comment if it sucked. I sing at churches all around my local area. My voice is average at best, but I prefer singing with others better than me. While nerve racking, it forces me to be better which is a win in the end. Keep it up. It’s the only way to improve.
When you commit to the song, and sing "full-voice" you sound really good. I think your 'problem' is primarily confidence. When you start listening to yourself, that's when the negative feedback loop starts. The more you sing with Noah the better you will get. Like he said "They're my songs..... I wouldn't let you do it if I thought that..." He obviously trusts you to perform with him in a place there was NOWHERE to hide! You have got a good voice... You just need to trust Noah, but more importantly TRUST YOURSELF.... What happens next is up to you. (This seems a little trite as I'm reading it, but the underlying message I think is valid. So I've left it in!).
The drive up- "If you look out the left side of the van, you'll see the back of the van..." Good stuff! The vocals will come, you've got a good foundation. The more you sing, the more confidence you will have in projecting your voice. Looking forward to hearing more. Also, y'all are knocking the dust off and getting back to business, it takes time. I'm sure the audience is just happy to be out listening to live music again. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
It may seem intuitive because you've heard it a hundred times, but the voice really is just like an instrument. Once you start singing it becomes apparent how literal that's meant to be taken. Just like a guitar, there's no way around the hard work and practice. So keep up the good work man!
Rhett your singing is so good, everybody benefits from lessons cuz it opens up your range and stuff, but you can’t teach tone and beauty of the voice and you definitely have that!!
I don't usually take the time to "like" a video, but hearing you talking about struggling with your self confidence while learning another facet of music really resonated with me as it is something I struggle with myself. Your self reflection and perseverance have really inspired me. Thanks so much for making this video!
I have been playing in bands for a few years now and I struggled with the EXACT same thing as you do. I could never call myself a singer, but after time, blood, sweat and tears, it has become a second nature to sing backup vocals to almost every song we play, no matter if I screw it from time to time. I can assure you that it is sooo much about your self-confidence. Your voice is really pleasant to hear, you have good feel as well, so please, do not be afraid to show everyone else, what you can do with your voice. Not just Noah, but every single one of us supports you. :) Greetings from Czech Republic, I hope I can see you perform live one day :)
Glad you decided to share! Love the backstage journals and really appreciate your humility and honesty. Was going to see you at a show in Louisville, KY but then the pandemic hit, so I’m excited to see shows are starting to happen again! Also, you sound great. Stay encouraged!
Rhett, I felt the same way for over 30 years. You're doing the right thing. Focusing on the result doesn't help. Focusing on the journey will get you there I think. One the most insightful things I ever heard in music school (but still hard to remember) is that singing with good tone will help you sing in tune. And tone requires air. I play the tuba and the same thing is true on a brass instrument: fear is the opposite of air.
Brother, you got it! The guitar playin' is not an issue. You've got the whole package! Hearing you back stage checking your harmonies was spot on! I get not trusting yourself, but I'm telling ya, you got it!! I'm no pro in the industry, but as a music lover and as a guitarist and bassist of 30+ years, you've got it dude!
Rhett I feel your pain. I’m the exact same way. I have been playing gigs consistently for the last four years. About 2 years ago, one of my band leaders came to me and asked me to lead a few sets in his place, I have no vocal background at all. I’m strictly a guitarist. But I chose to muster up the courage and just go for it. I had a ton of fun and had a bunch of positive reinforcement. It’s now been almost 4 months since I’ve played a gig live, and I haven’t sung or led music in a couple years. I still have no practice or lessons or anything. But seeing another fellow musician step out of the comfort zone, that I’m so comfortable in is so inspiring. Dude keep it up, you sound great, no joke! Keep pushing, keep grinding. Your channel is one of the main reasons I keep a guitar in my hands! Thanks for everything you do! So much love for you guys!
We already see how good you are so seeing the "bad/ugly" as you put it will only inspire us more so we know that when we screw up or aren't comfortable with this or that... that its normal and fine in the end and we can still make it to whatever our goals are. Thank you Rhett, keep on doing you and posting you videos
Thank you for opening up and showing a side that you say you struggle with in music. I myself love to sing, but I'm a baritone and not a very good one. I find it so frustrating to know that I could never do what you do. I know what sounds good and bad and you my friend sound great. I know that you will face this, head on and kick it's ass, like you have done with everything else.
DUDE!!!! I am literally on the same boat haha. I know the feeling and it’s not easy getting over that small bump. Practice will make us better singers!
I wrote a poorly conceived, long commentary and then deleted it. The shorter truth is that you are a soulmate to so many of us who play, sing, and just hope other folks enjoy. We derive pleasure from others pleasure? It’s a sort of alternative solace, but I thank Gosh for that inspiration. I’m with you Rhett. Stay strong.
Also, I like your self a facing approach and honesty. You're not always trying to make everything look glamorous and like it's a piece of cake and you're the best.
Thanks for this one. I relate - getting my own singing together is THE biggest challenge I also have, working on a new project and some new songs in particular now that I realized *I* have to be the guy to sing myself, versus handing over that duty to someone else on these. Gulp/sigh/etc. Kudos to you for facing this and for sharing it. I'd LOVE a "singing for guitar players" sort of crash course on vocals myself! Please keep this thread of your journey shares coming. (And y'all sound great, only getting better - love your work with Noah. Cheers)
I miss playing live music, SO MUCH. So happy for you guys but also feeling a little friendly envy! Btw, I am currently going through almost the exact same struggles vocally. My band has aksed me to start doing backup vocals and I want to do it so badly but its so hard when you have no confidence in your singing abilities. I'm right there with you man. All we can do is keep working at it.
You guys sound great!🔥🔥🔥🔥

MAN !!!! you have a good voice, keep doing it.
Hey, Rhett. You sound great, man. Thanks for letting us hear and see how your life and music are going! :)
Harmonies sound great guys !!
Which really excites
me; all I want is for no one to think I sound bad.
I’m glad you made this video, it was cool to see the process of gig day.
I was once told “God has not called you to sing!” Joke is on them... been making money playing music for 15 years now.
Reminds of my first guitar teacher. He told me, bare in mind I was twelve at the time, that I will never be able to play guitar. Stopped playing but picked it up three years later. Now, at just shy of thirty, I can play that fool under the table.
Everyone in my family discouraged me from making music. They all said I have no talent. Maybe they're right, but I'm still trying.
@@brushstroke3733 if you’re trying......you have all the “talent” you need 👍
@@gjh61261 Well said! 👍👍
Not gonna lie. It's fun to prove people wrong when they tell you that you can't do something...
@@brushstroke3733 That song is a difficult one though
Keep Pushing my man! There's no Plan B! The more singing you do the better you'll be! Every Musician's journey...
I love this kind of video.
Singing harmony is no easy task!! You sound good!
You’ll overcome your self-doubt I‘m 100% sure of that (I struggle with the same kind of singing issues even though most think I’m pretty good at it I’m too shy and anxious to go all out)
I always say, sing with your ears, sing a Capella. Start with something simple, don't depend on the guitar, sing with your ears.
Good on you Rhett. It’s very brave of you to show vulnerability, we all have it. It made this video very humane, and I appreciate it very much. And btw - you sounded great together.
Honesty is the most important band dynamic.......
Rhett can sing! Good voice it’s just gaining more control... otherwise.. it’s really good
your vocals are coming along well, the more you do it the better you get
Did he give you a slide lesson to get you to Josh levels?
Josh who?? 😁
This comment is better than Rhetts tone
your voice is great man, dont let the self doubt hold you back. love these videos so much, i’ll definitely go see you guys if you’re ever around dc
Wait a tick…tone king Rhett Shull creator of The Tone Course™ needs a Tone lesson?? I’m going to throw up my world is spinning
I miss it. These videos remind me what it’s really like. Press on. Musicians will love it.
A wise man once said, “There is no plan B.”
Rhett your voice actually has a great tone!! Keep pursuing it, you’re doing great! 🙌🏻
Noah has an amazing voice. For me its just impossible to play and sing at the same time.
Same!! I guess it’s just practice go little by little and soon I’ll be a cake walk!!
That is what I thought to almost 50 years ago when I started. But the band had 1 rule, everybody sings! I was more nervous singing than playing, after awhile it goes away. Support from people around you helps too! Best luck to you!! 8) --gary
Harmonies were awesome! Really nice blend.
Are you ever going to include yourself playing anything but hell or high water?
Thanks for sharing! It's a lot of fun to follow your journey.
Completely fascinated. I could watch these all day.
The drive up- "If you look out the left side of the van, you'll see the back of the van..."
Good stuff!
From singing a small harmony part a couple years ago to now. Your singing and confidence towards singing is getting better
Glad y’all are making music live again!!!
Love to see the Backstage Journal stuff back again. Also love the tone of your slide playing, nice stuff! Thanks for posting!!
Chin up Rhett. That was great! We are all so happy you’re back…it’ll be like riding a bike.
We already see how good you are so seeing the "bad/ugly" as you put it will only inspire us more so we know that when we screw up or aren't comfortable with this or that... that its normal and fine in the end and we can still make it to whatever our goals are. Thank you Rhett, keep on doing you and posting you videos
Your harmonies add something beautiful. Singing brings us all together in a way that we all understand instinctively.
Your singing honestly sounds good!! It's amazing how far you've come in a short amount of time!! Kudos brother!!!
You are a tremendous singer! Don’t doubt that! I loved the harmonies
