      @Belfreyite 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, I do play around on a piano accordion, but gave up trying to read music long ago.
      Notes and chords are "codified" along with time signature and tempo.
      More importantly, keys have been described as to their emotional connections.
      Most tunes follow a pattern of tension and resolution, but some keep the listener on tenterhooks, skillfully holding on to the tension.
      I think it matters more to try to get your head around the feel of chords and notes and how the combinations nuance the feel, than grappling with the notation.

    • @marysalvi242
      @marysalvi242 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Belfreyite I love the tech explanations (another channel I love does this) and I am musical, a singer(not in a very long time) and just learned the songs by listening over and over, so now when, and I agree, "most importantly" how keys and chords etc vibrate to our brains and we feel something. Now imo, this was an epic fail...the song just fell flat and was dragging, so, I didn't get any emotional reaction to the music. Maybe I'll go and listen to some old coldplay music. This song, well, to each their own likes and dislikes. Happy Rick enjoys, no loves the song! ; )

    "Rush of Blood" was the only CD in my car for the 24 months after my husband died. I listened every day to and from work. Every nerve of every sensory organ in my body every cell in my brain got imbedded in with those songs -- every chord, every melody, every riff, every beat. One reason is the A natural in the F major chord resolves the B flat which is the 9th of the A flat. Great music has a series of tension and releases that most don’t understand but instead feel. A great artist brings the listeners on a journey of these type of pretty resolutions. Understanding the music theory behind these chord progressions gives the listeners a deeper level of appreciation of this beauty.

    When I first listened to this song, I was at the end of my rope.
    At 19, I left an abusive home, broke, still in school, and would spend most of my days alone in a crappy apartment.
    "If I'd only waited, I'd not be stuck here in this hole." This was always funny to me. If only I'd braved through the dysfunctional situation, I wouldn't have suffered too much alone. But I couldn't take it, so I left.
    Whenever holidays came in, my university friends would go back to their homes outside of town and because I didn't have a home to go back to, I would feel even more isolated. I'd wander around the sleepy town on my own while listening to this song. It's an absolute gem.

      You are definitely right about angry fans that hate success of any kind. However, Coldplay always got hated for being derivative of Radiohead (specifically the piano/guitar ballads, see "Karma Police" or earlier "High and Dry"). Later, I think that criticism shifted towards Coldplay's lack of ambition musically, or their insistence on sentimentality and a kind of "smarminess." Perhaps starting your career with the heart-open-wide romanticism of "Yellow" and never really changing tack left them an easy target for critics that just heard a Dad-rock diet Radiohead without any of their British compatriots' social critique, darkness, or experimentation. I don't necessarily agree with all that criticism but that seemed a rather common position to take.

    My daughter is a Coldplay fan from the beginning. Sometime in the early 2000's, we drove from here in north Arkansas down to Dallas for one of their performances. While we were waiting outside for the doors to open, I looked around and there were very few people there my age ( I was about 50 at the time ). I am glad my daughter talked me into the trip; I really enjoyed their music: real musicians playing some real good music. I sent her a text about this video but didn't spoil it; I bet she recognizes who it is.

    "Amsterdam" is an amazing song at the end of an amazing album. That album "A Rush of Blood to the Head" is probably the last CD I purchased in a retail store. Coldplay is so creative and unique, especially their earlier work. So many melodic and heartfelt songs that really help me escape into my own world where absolutely nothing else matters. Seeing Rick's reaction is reassuring that I am not the only one who is deeply moved by their music. But also, getting Rick's musical perspective here, I can appreciate the musicality and the artistry. Awesome. Great stuff! Rick is correct, Coldplay did go in a different direction. Thank you for this! I bought this CD at Walmart in Lewisburg, PA in May 2003 along with Pete Yorn's "Day I Forgot". I was driving home from Bucknell* to home on the Jersey Shore 2 weeks after my father died suddenly at 53. I was 21 and just finished my 3rd year. I had gone home right away for all of the pain and logistics of that, and then I drove back out to Bucknell to compete in one last end of season track meet in an effort to nail a time that would keep my season going (in the 3k steeplechase). I had a firecracker under my ass in that race, but I missed qualifying by like 2 seconds. So I packed up the rest of my crap and headed back to the shore for the summer.
    Before I left town I stopped in Walmart and picked up the two aforementioned records. For whatever reason I popped in Day I Forgot first listened front to back, which was a personal rule for me at the time. I enjoyed it and it helped for a bit. Then I popped in Rush of Blood To the Head. I was blown away. I was i love, in pain, in tears (The Scientist hit really fucking hard at that moment). I got home and I went to my stupid old room and my old Sony CD-10 boombox that I purchased when I was 10 years old and I played it again, and I just laid on my bed crying, exhausted.
    I love this album in so many ways and it feels like the Universe was building a bridge for me. I don't know if I "believe" that per se, but it felt like it. Thank you for focusing on this album. The guys they are now are not the guys they were then, and I think they really found a beautiful moment when they recorded this album.
    (* RE: Bucknell, funny thing about this, it took me til now--41--to realize how poor I was compared to all but a few of my classmates there. I say this because yes, I am a bit defensive about where I went to college and stereotypes.)

We were 20 years old and inseperable for a few month living outside of time in a bubble of everything best Europe has to offer. I remember my friend putting this song on her laptop, just after leaving and saying goodbye forever, the atmosphere was heavy with bittersweetness, that was the perfect song for the perfect moment, I never saw them again, it was 15 years ago,

I guess the point is no matter how big & great you are to a global fan base - you'll never be everyone's cup of tea.

      @@Catsincages On the contrary, Coldplay would seem to be an example of a band that is very authentic in their approach to music. Irrespective, and to clarify:
      I'm not saying bands shouldn't try to be 'successful'. If they wish to, they should try to have their music heard by as many people as possible but, what I'm saying, is that using record sales as a metric of success will always be a losing game. You'll never please everyone and, imho, it's better to create the music that speaks of who you are, than try to fit someone else's idea of what your music should sound like.
      It's perfectly possible to have a long and happy career without churning out disposable pop songs. That said, some people love disposable pop songs and if they wish to create or listen to them, then go for it. The world has enough music for everyone. Find your happy place within that, and enjoy it.

    How about doing a video on “Nights on Broadway” by the Bee Gees? A truly great song that helped to turn the band’s fortunes around in the mid-70’s - it also was the song in which Barry Gibb discovered his falsetto. And a band that people love to hate, as misplaced as that hate is. Better yet, how about doing a Barry Gibb interview? The man is a songwriting dynamo and had a hell of a vocal range. Rick definitely should do this. The Bee Gees were and are loved everywhere in the world. I don’t know what’s the matter with the US. There have been papers written on homophobia and racism being the root of disco bashing. The Bee Gees wrote in every genre. And they wrote in every decade from the 60s to the 2000s. I don’t know why many think of them as only disco. I think the bashing against Bee Gees was jealousy. The media did overplay them in the late 70s, but the Bee Gees stepped back for almost a decade and wrote huge hits for other megastars. Who else does that?

    I think Rick summed up why there is a lot of Coldplay haters now, perfectly. I was a huge fan at the time of the first two albums but just hated the direction they took after that. You really could pick any song off either of the first two albums for this video. My personal favourite is Green Eyes, great song.

      Yeah, for me it’s any song of that second album, I mean so many incredible songs: The Scientist, Amsterdam, Green Eyes, Politik, In My Place, Warning Sign, Clocks... One of the best albums of the last 20 years.

      Right? I remember that dvd from early days, this song was the last..piano had writing 'make trade fair' or something like that..mesmerizing performence.
      And we don't deserve Rick:)

    Love this song myself. I didn't buy "Rush of blood to the head" but one of my children did. I find that is one of the great things about having children, they introduce you to music you would not be normally inclined to purchase or even experience. Watching how much you enjoyed this song made me give it another listen. Brilliant. Emotional, love the dynamics

    The best thing about Coldplay’s first two albums is that they didn’t want to sound cool - they’ve just sounded amazing

    I think Coldplay's early songs were amazing, like Clocks, the scientist, yellow, my favorite In my place, fix you etc etc. Some of their newer songs are amazing to but its not like the earlier ones.

    I saw Coldplay twice during their downtempo phase (Rush and X&Y tours). Amsterdam is one of my all time favorite songs. I loved Coldplay in those years. Like Rick I lost interest when they gave up their sad tunes. But those first 3 albums were all treasures. Scientist, Fix You, Warning Sign, Moses are some of the gems from those albums

    I swear to God this channel is the best. Clicked on this and was really upset and mad at myself that I actually would have never heard this song If not for Rick, his channel and this video. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Truly. Those chords are so lush and pretty.
    So when people say to "Feel what you sing and not just perform," but feel what you're singing, THIS is exactly that. The feel that comes through his voice with the piano. Damn that boy can write and sing, Gweneth let a good one go. Guy truth. Lol

    I am a long distance hiker, and I often listen through full albums while I walk. I remember hiking through Yosemite high country and listening through this album and feeling like I was not just moving through the landscape, I was part of it. I was part of something bigger than myself. And I think that's why I still love Coldplay - there's something about them that helps me feel connected to something bigger. I do miss their old style a lot, but I did love bits of Everyday Life, and O on Ghost Stories will always be a favorite.

      It is my favorite album from coldplay until this day…..i love every song on this one, in different times of my life some song shines better than the others….and it turns out that the love of my life, found later in life is “green eyes” and that lyrics became so real

      @@oliverzawadzki2081 I carry a pair of wired headphones, but I make sure to listen with one earbud so I can still hear other hikers and animals. I download albums on Spotify, use an Anker battery to keep the phone charged and keep it on airplane mode to save juice.

      @@AsTheSparrow83 You won't hear it with or without headphones... I have been stalked by a mountain lion before and I swear I didn't hear a thing. Just saw it's green eyes staring at me when I rolled into camp one evening and then I turned right around because no way in heck I was camping there lol. I always use only one headphone if I'm listening though to hear other hikers and bears.
