If you're curious git, apparently sonic 2 has an issue with this cheat where if you wrap the screen arround it will actually think you got out of the water but also keep the water in and not let you get your air back... which is probably why Sonic 3 was chosen instead

Angel Island Act 1 crashes once the water reaches a certain point if I recall correctly. You can trigger that with glitches related to level select as well. If I had to guess is probably due to the cutscene.
i made a set of codes a few years ago that probably work better. there's no grace period, but it works on all characters and all zones except lbz1 and all the crashing zones FFF730:0001 - master water code (required for the codes to work) FFF648:0000 - set water level to the top of the level FFF64A:0000 - lock water level to the top of the level FFB02C:001E - disables drowning (if you really want that) FFF64C:0000 - stops water from moving (if you hit a water level change trigger)
@@not_kjb sonic 1 and 2 handle water differently, so no. i've tried these under sonic delta (which has sonic 1/2/3k all in the s3k engine) and they seem to work mostly fine in the s1/2 zones there
At 24:10 the level is looping which means Sonic is warping back at a previous point in the level to keep the boss fight going, while keeping the camera on you to make it seamless. Tails can't seem to land at this spot while underwater, so he follows you and is just going towards where you were just a moment ago when you warped and comes back to you.

When it comes to glitches, I think what matters is what the glitch is and whether it's reasonable to perform. Unintended behaviors that can be triggered with little effort are fair game; anything requiring immense setup or superhuman reflexes to pull off is out of bounds. With as familiar as you are with this game, I think we can assume that if you don't know it, then it's probably too complicated to be considered reasonable. The Spider Savior is a neat twist, even if it can't save the level. Most of these are 'bonus stage possible' theoretically, but treating the checkpoints purely as air refills rather than 'bonus stages' is probably a better way to get to the heart of the challenge. Looks like S&K was significantly more malicious than Sonic 3. Bubble Shields just seem to be scarcer. I'm almost surprised the code worked in as many places as it did. It's one of those things that feels like it could crash the game a lot more than it does.
I assume this is what it would be like if Sonic got hit with Scarecrow's fear toxin- water, water everywhere and you need nerves of steel to get through safe. This challenge does however seem more conductive to the blinding speed runs the series is famous for, at least more than the 'Without Moving Sonic' challenges.
Of course Tails solo would be fine except for the Marble Garden Act 2 boss. Being able to just rise up to places much faster than Sonic helps him a lot. But since swimming doesn't have a hitbox, i fear that boss would be unbeatable.

An Underwater Sonic Mod I think would be especially cool to play as Miles "Tails" Prower since he can swim, Knuckles the Echidna would be less so since he can't swim but at least he can climb up walls, and for Sonic the Hedgehog well it would just plain suck since he can't do either. I think however though that I would love to play an Underwater Sonic Mod as Miles "Tails" Prower. Also if Tails were to drown he needs to have a unique drowning sprite like Sonic and Knuckles do, like Tails just has his default death sprite which is lame since he doesn't have a unique drowning sprite except for in Sonic Mania.
I have an idea for the act 2 boss on how it can possibly be beaten, if you exclude using giant rings in act 2, you can obtain super sonic in the level, and since super sonic is fast in the water he should be able to keep up with eggman, course you will be forced to take damage during the boss fight to remove the bubble shield so theres still that time limit when the level ends and they need to get on the air ship. In fact I ponder if the whole sonic and knuckles portion can be done just forgoing the secret rings and relying on super sonics speed.
Unfortunately the game prevents you from transforming during the final chase. Even with debug monitor, I'm pretty sure the "no super" function overrides it and leaves Sonic stuck.
@@MrMariosonicman Ohh ok. Yeah that sounds like it could work. Mushroom Hill's got a lot of starposts. Maybe not possible to finish the cutscene but, the game autosaves the moment "Sonic Got Through Act 2" appears so I'd count that still.
If we allow for bonus stages and emerald collection, then I am certain that will make a massive chunk of these impossible stages very possible. Flying Battery 2 would just require Hyper Sonic!
@@SyRose901It could technically be possible since the level select copies the data from the last played file in memory. The issue of course, it would be extremely tedious to re-collect every Emerald obtained in the challenge on a save file. Probably not worth all the hassle.
Mushroom Hill Zone Act 2 and Death Egg Zone Act 2 might be possible, but is probably TAS only. Normally when you try to spin dash in the endless chase section, you just roll instead, but if you spin dash frame perfectly you can build up more than enough speed to hit the boss normally, so the underwater version will be doable. okay on an unrelated note, sonic 3's 4:3 aspect ratio combined with youtube's MASSIVE empty space just leaves some humongous black space also you missed a big ring in 27:34 at the left into the wall, i don't really think the boss would still have been possible with it but still worth pointing out

Since he's accessing the stages through Stage Select, I doubt emerald collection is gonna be compatible with the rather flimsy set of codes.

I didn't try that, maybe it's emulator related, but I think it's down to too many clashing effects.

If you can beat the final boss before drowning you can defeat eggman while hes raising from the pit if you time it just right
But if it's underwater, the physics might prevent that from being possible.
