  • In order to be successful at the net in singles or in doubles you need to hit your volleys with good power.
One important key to more power on your volleys is using your legs correctly.
When I teach clinics I always tell students that they need to volley with their legs more than with their arms.
Today’s video is presented by Gregg Le Sueur who is the newest addition to the OTI instructional team.
Feel free to welcome Gregg to the team and ask him any questions regarding the video tip in the comments underneath the video!

Thank you Gregg for your thorough instructional tips! I really appreciate that you not only demonstrate the technique of your tip but also (and just as valuable imo) that you show how we can practice and ingrain the technique on our own...thank you for your passionate insight!

Hi Mike, thank you for your question. That's a good observation and you make a valid point. I adjust my forehand volley grip slightly to 2.5, the edge between an eastern forehand and a continental grip. With one adjustment, this allows you to get the racquet face facing forward longer and closer to vertical, increasing the hitting zone, requiring less timing to stick the volley.
With a continental grip, the strings actually face slightly to the left. So in order get the strings facing forward, and to take stress off the wrist, you need to make a few adjustments. You can accomplish this by raising the right elbow slightly, then making a slight adjustment with the wrist and then moving the contact point a little further back. Before I modified my grip to 2.5 on the forehand volley, I used to volley with a continental grip but made those three adjustments.
    I hope this helps.

Love it! This was the solution to the high floating volleys. In my effort to attack them I would have all of my weight on the front foot before contact resulting in dumping into the net. If I wait just a bit longer and load my back foot, volleys clear net and have a ton more pop. Thanks!

I hit with guys that are always trying to hit 100 mph at the net guy. Can you do a video on how to deflect the powerful blast coming at you at the net and re-direct it. Easier said than done during a live doubles match. Thanks for the excellent videos!

Same principle…racquet head out in front, head alongside racquet, small punch movement forward…only difference is the final step may not occur because of a lack of time…but shouldn’t matter because if ball is coming quickly at you, there should be plenty of power

Florian, can you please ask the coach to demo how you do the two step movement to hit the volley when your opponent is ripping the ball at you?

  • @Bernard8001
    @Bernard8001 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I do this all the time its a natural -it is vital you are bouncing on your toes and you step into your volleys this comes from your legs on forehand-backhand - its vital

Great lesson with using leg power for volley. Would you please elaborate more details of using the hand (for fast incoming ball), forearm (to generate racket head to volley slower incoming ball), or shoulder join (to use the whole arm to volley ball at service line - longer volley)? I'm not sure my above assumptions are correct and how the upper part of body relates to lower part/leg power when volley different types of incoming balls.
    Thanks, Dan

Thank you Dan. You want to move your arm as a unit, with the movement coming from the shoulder. Your step and swing should go forward together, and you want to make sure that you step through contact and then land once the ball has left your strings.

Hi Mr. Florian, Is that correct if I use 2 hands to hit my backhand volleys ?
Because I don't know why but I get used to it, I hit my backhand volleys with 2 hand and I do the same thing for slices. My coach said he doesn't like it but I do :)
Anyway, reply to me some ideas about my 2 handed backhand volleys. Thanks

I've always been taught to start with the opposite leg. Is this first step with the ipsilateral leg only for slow incoming balls?

power comes from the back leg. Load the back leg first.

Do you consider your grip to be a continental? I see your contact point is about a foot or even more out in front of your torso. If I use anything but an eastern forehand grip and reach that far out in front, I would break my wrist. Can you please explain? Thanks.
