    How frustrating is it when you work the point to get a weak response from your opponent, only to then miss the easy volley?
    Most club players fear approaching the net since they know deep down their volleys are a weakness and not as reliable as they should be.
    However, the volleys can be the simplest shot to master if you have a strong and efficient preparation phase.
    In this video, OTI Instructor James Ludlow explains the all-important ‘line up movement’ on the volleys and how it can totally transform your net game.

    Excellent volley instruction video. I've been playing 46 years and I have been using this line up technique almost all 46 years. I might add let the forward movement come from the shoulder on both the forehand and backhand, and try to keep the forward hand movement short (6 to 12 inches) and stop the forward motion with the strings facing the target area. Don't swing and allow the face to pull across your volley where the strings end up pointing to the side. I think elbows up, line up the strings, use the shoulders as the pivot for forward motion, the forward motion is basically a push (some might say punch), keep the forward motion small 6 to 12 inches to stop the motion with the strings roughly facing the target area. You get power by moving forward with your body to volley and not by using a big swing or fast punch. If you hit with this technique and close forward with your legs when you have time, you can hit a crisp and fast volley with this technique.

    Great instruction. I like the way you broke the volleyball down into progressive steps to learn to execute it properly.

    Excellent video my friend !
    Perfect explanation and demonstration !
    I sometimes make the mistake of pulling the racket back instead of moving forward.

    Very good volley tip, one of the best. The other videos I have seen makes it more complicated. I find the volley extremely difficult even after playing tennis for so many years bc getting a good line up is way more difficult than it seems. I wish i had watched this video many years back and this would save me a lot of bad volleys

    Thanks James, great lesson. Often I hit the volley while still loaded on the back leg, so I lack that forward momentum of moving forward when I hit. Could you do a video on how to hit a volley when the ball is coming towards you over the net, but just out of reach, as some extra footwork is needed for this.

    Hopefully more top players use their volley like it used to be, I heard the technology from powerful racket makes it hard for player to come to the net. Is that true?

  • @wesleyoliver3312
    @wesleyoliver3312 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    My main takeaway was that being taught to "step with your opposite foot" during a volley is misleading (or was for me) because the loading and the necessity of moving the racket forwards without swinging it means you simply HAVE to be moving your whole body forward to meet the ball, and the step-through with the opposite foot is just the natural byproduct of that movement.
    Bonus takeaway! As an observer (either IRL or on VODs) the racket always LOOKS like it dips on contact, too, but it actually being held static and dipping AFTER contract due to the impact force/recoil from the ball. When someone is moving their whole body (and thus the racket) quickly during a volley it LOOKS like they swing their racket a bit (or a lot, even), but they're absolutely NOT!

    Very good instruction! Thanks a lot!
    I have a question for backhand volley: does the whole arm have to be straight to hit the volley? Or the arm can be bent a little bit like the forehand volley?

    • @OnlineTennisInstruction
      @OnlineTennisInstruction  ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the feedback! we generally recommend to try and get it as straight as possible so you can move your arm as one unit

    Really good instruction on the volley. What grip are you using for the forehand and backhand volley? Thank you.

      thanks for the feedback! :) 2.5 with the index knuckle and bevel 2 with the heelpad for the forehand volley and bevel 2 for both the index knuckle and heel pad for the backhand volley.
