      Some seeds sold as carpet plants that are actually hygrophila polysperma, you can actually sprinkle on top the water. They'll sink, start to sprout and actually root into the substrate, all under water. Probably not the best results though.

    I had the same issue with my aquascape, it eluded me time after time. Day after day. I drew what I wanted on paper at work and at home. Until I went outside and hiked and saw a fallen tree that landed almost like nature intended. I’m not a philosophical person, but in my understanding of nature by its very nature is chaotic. I finalized my aquascape as a fallen tree in a creek bed. It was perfect.

    Love your channel, thanks for the GREAT vids.

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. I could have just blacked it out but at the time I was so busy and just didn't bother with it and the plants died off from its coverage but mainly just from neglect. Nothing went to waste. I learned tons from the process, I got footage to make the video and its nothing I can't just simply do again. It's only wasted when nothing came out of it.

    Thanks for the video! Best TH-cam video on DSM I think. Question: did you trim the HC right after you flooded the tank? Would you recommend trimming off ALL the leaves? Would that kill them? Thanks again.

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the compliment! :) Yes, it's highly suggested that you do. The HC would have grown pretty decently thick during the emersed period. So you want to give it a good trim so that the root don't rot. If you trim all the leave and just leave the stems intact it will grow back. It would probably grow back even more full if you did that. The problem is it take a lot of time to do that but it won't harm the plants. It would actually be better in the sense it'll grow out more.

    Thank you for the video, I’ve done DSM a week ago and it seems like some of my plants are browning. I have light on about 10 hours a day, I water them once in the morning and once at night, I have saran wrap covering the tank, feels humid when I put my hand inside the tank to give them a little air for 5 to 10 minutes. Thank you for sharing this great video and patiently filming it for us 😀👍🏻🌱 Can I do this method in a low- tech tank where I will not be using CO2?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably not. The carpet used here requires high co2 and if you try something like Dwarf Hair Grass that doesn't require high Co2, you need to compensate the time from dry to being flooded to ease them into losing all that co2 to grow. There are other techniques such as filling the tank slowly over weeks but I've never tried that.

    How long did it take to fully grow the carpet out? I’m trying to do this in a small 10L tank how long would it take to grow out think in a small tank? Would carpet grass seeds work better or is it better to use store bought tissue cultures? What would be faster for a small tank?
    And if I use the tissue culture method do I have to wait 8 weeks before I can fill it with water?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends. All tanks are different. Small or large. It depends on how much you plant. When I DSM, I tend to go longer then what most people do (up to 10 weeks) because I care more about getting a good carpet in than rushing to fill it and stock it. That's what usually get people to fail. They don't wait long enough. As to carpet seeds, well, better watch this video: th-cam.com/video/cpTXEaq7y98/w-d-xo.html

    • @TheWaterBox

      1. Yes, for any carpeting plant, the lower portions can die. Thus why we trim... or mow the lawn. ;)
      2. HC DSMed for 7 week should have the roots grown into the substrate by now. You should be fine. :)

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Test you waters first. Dry start supposively cycles your substrate but I'm always wary about it. Co2 depends on what you are trying to grow. Something like HC you should be using co2. You have to remember, you will get die back so you need the plants to recover fast and co2 will do that. If not it will grow slow you will have to watch it close, do water changes if needed to stop ammonia spikes.

    Such a great video! Question??
    Do i have to use co2 for DTM? (I'm in the planning stages for my first planted tank. 8.5 gl. For my first go at this, I'm not going to use co2, so a simple tank setup) So does this mean I should not use the DMS?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what you're trying to grow. If you're using DSM, then you're trying to establish and grow a carpet. Most carpeting plants are high maintenance so most of the time you will need Co2 to keep it going. But with a small 8.5, you might be ok. What are you trying to grow?

I watch some video in youtube using DHG in DSM. in just two weeks DHG already start to propagate. If someone in the community could answer this one question of mine, I'd really appreciate it. I've done DSM before but not with a carpet plant. I've been growing one for the past two weeks with DSM. I'm going to absolutely continue DSM until the carpet grows out a lot more. I have an aquarium ornament (a hobbit house) in the center. When I eventually flood the tank, there will be a pocket of air inside the ornament. Of course I pull it out and flip it over to get the air bubbles out, but odds are that will unsettle some of the carpet plant around it. I know the air bubbles aren't the same as toxic air bubbles that can be found in certain substrates such as sand, but I can't help but wonder if this is something I should be worried about. Are those pockets of air in the ornament something I should worry about when I flood it? Thank you for your time xD
