  • How to Grow Aquarium Carpet from Seeds: Planted a Tank Set Up DIY
To begin this aquarium set up, you will need plant seeds. I got mine through Amazon. I have added the link below:
Link to Plant Seeds: (I am not an Amazon Affiliate and do not receive any $ from this link)
Zafina 3 Pack Aquarium Plant Seeds, Easy to Grow Aquatic Plant Seeds, Fast Growing Aquarium Carpet Seeds - Creates a Natural Ecosystem for Your Fish www.amazon.com/dp/B07CGGJKZ5/...
You will also need aquatic plant dirt/soil such as Flourite and or Eco-Complete.
I grew these seeds using the dry start method. There are several TH-cam videos on this. I added a link in the video.
To “plant” your seeds, just place them on top of the soil wherever you want your plants to grow. Then spray the well with water. The seeds and dirt should be wet, but no puddles are standing water should be left in the tank.
Cover the tank with plastic wrap and make sure you have some type of plant light on at least 10-12 hours a day
Lift the plastic once a day for about 20 minutes to give the plants air/oxygen. Also check daily to make sure the seeds/dirt is not dry. If it is getting dry, spray it with water. The seed need to stay wet.
I recommend growing the plants like this for about 2 weeks or longer. Until you are happy with the plant growth.
Once your happy with the plants grow, add water. You will want to add the water very slowly, so you do not cause the plants to uproot and float.
Keep checking the waters nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia levels. Once the tank is cycled or if your water levels are correct and maintain correct readings, you can add your fish.
If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments!

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for watching the video. I am working on making an update video, but in the meantime, I want to give everyone an update.
Unfortunately, 40-60% of the plants died (melted) after about 3 months and after about 6 months I took the rest out and replaced them with tissue culture plants and already established plants. I tried using C02 (liquid and then a tank of C02) but it didn’t help. I also added flourish (made by Seachem). I found out after posting the video that these particular plant seeds really weren’t meant to be aquarium plants. The tank was amazing for a solid 3 months and I really wish I have found a way to keep it that way.

I just wanna let you know, the plants stayed alive and beautiful for about 3-4 months and then they started to die. I added co2, but it was to late. Some of the plants are still alive now, but there definitely not as pretty as they were when I made this video 😢. Some people have told me since I made the video, that these plants don’t last long no matter what you do, but my tank was absolutely amazing for a good 3-4 months. It’s fine now, I just had to add some new already developed plants to fill in where some of the seed plants died. All my guppies are still doing well too!

I planted my seeds yesterday. I too purchased my seeds off of Amazon ( different species than you purchased) , but I paid $19 for two packages for my 20gal tank. I only decided to do 3/4 of the tank in carpet and went with sand for the rest. I purchased a grow light from Home depot. In the last 24 hrs , I have checked on the seeds a little excessively... I am SO eager for them to sprout lol. Thank you for sharing this video, it was very helpful and your aquarium carpet is what inspired me to upgrade from a 5gal w/o plants to a 20gal with lots of greenery. I hope mine turns out as well as yours and thanks you so Mich again for sharing.

I actually have 2 other planted tanks and last summer I finally built a pond for the carnival goldfish I got about 5 years ago that are now almost 10” long. Your fish will love all the plants. Once I started adding live plants to my tanks my aquariums did so much better and looked so much better. And I have one planted tank I did with sand, it’s my most established tank and the plants in there do great. I actually take clippings from the plants in that tank and use them in my other tanks.

About a month ago, (9 months after I posted this video) I removed the remaining plants. They were dying and looked rough. I found out later that a lot of people have the same issues with these seeds.

Hello, I am using this method to grow a bed of pearl grass in a 20 gallon tank. Before adding my substrate materials, I lined the aquarium with super fine nylon fish netting, I am hoping to transplant the bed of grass along with the substrate into my 2’x2’x4’ 120 gallon tank without removing fish or all of the water (obviously). Is this possible and what is the best way to do it? At what point in the process should I “cycle”? Maybe do it in the 20 gallon once, then put all cycled water and lift up entire sod pad of grass and lower into large tank?

When I did it, I waited longer, but I read that as long as the plants have rooted in the soil/substrate it should be ok. Just put the water in super slow or your plants will come loose. Also, I don’t know if your using an aquarium light made for plants, but if not, I would definitely get one and maybe use Co2 in some form (Seachem makes a liquid version).

Hi. I used your video to guid me for my tank so thank you. It was very helpful. I must have watched 20 or more video before I attempted it. BUT! One thing I am experiencing that no one has mentioned is a slime residue that started about 4 days into the growth process. Anywhere the seed are there is a slim. I’m on day 22 now and plants are nice and green but I still have this slim thing. I tried to clean it off the rocks and driftwood during a water change using a new toothbrush but it’s really sticking to the driftwood. It is on the plants a little but not spreading. Most the slime is under the plant leafs now. Do you have any helpful tips or knowledge on this?

My seeds became slimy as soon as they came in contact with water, but it didn’t seem to cause any problems (that I noticed or experienced). I am not sure how to tell you to get rid of it, I don’t remember it being bad after I filled the tank with water, hopefully it goes away over time. I’m sorry, I know this probably wasn’t very helpful.

    • @markphilpott4554

Every video I watched said be generous with the seeds. Maybe I was too generous. That’s probably the cause of the excessive slime.
On a side note the slime stuck on the driftwood and rocks have seeds that didn’t sprout. The tank is on 5 days with water full and the seeds are now growing roots and sprouting. Interesting 🤔. My daughters tank is next. I will be careful on excessive seeding and see how it turns out.

I don’t think adding the seeds to an already established tank would work. The seeds would not stay in one place long enough to root. You could grow them in a little bowl (to make a mini carpet) and after they started to grow and root well you could move the mini carpet into the tar tank all as one piece. You could also grown them on a piece of drift wood and then move that into the tank after the plants were rooted in the wood.

Would temperature influence the growth of the seeds?

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It could. The tank should be humid. I don’t know exactly what temp my tank was when I was growing the seeds, but I had a plant light shinning into the tank which created heat and the plastic cover helped keep the heat and moisture in. The one piece of advice I can give is make sure you lift the plastic for at 15-25 mins a day, this will help stop mold from growing on the plants and sides of the tank.

I did not wash either substrate and you can use just one of them, but if you do I personally recommend using the Eco-complete. It’s my favorite, I have it in all my aquariums. Also, I learned the plant seeds aren’t as great as they look. About 3-4 months after this video more than 50% of them died. I even used C02, but it didn’t help. About a month ago I took the rest of the plants out and I’m waiting on my order from Aquarium Plant Factory to get here. Last weekend, I removed the remaining plants and replaced them with already grown aquatic plants from the fish store. Since doing this video (8-9 months ago) I have learned these seeds are not truly meant for aquariums. I would not do another planted tank using these seeds.
