Thank you for making such interesting content I found your channel last year and I’ve learned so much from you about traps and building things but I honestly didn’t know they made so many cool looking traps but that’s thanks to you keep up the amazing work can’t wait for your next video
Leave A comment on how much you think this rare mouse trap from 1877 is worth. I will give a shout out in my next video to the people who have the best guess.
4:30 Racoon "We're not falling for your trick again Shawn, where's the trap you've set for us?" 5:04 Opposum "what trap you guys talking about?" 5:18 Racoon "Oh no we missed our snack! Shawn you tricked us again!"
The mice’s inner thoughts, probably: “Gee, I’ve got a lot of time to think right now. I wonder if I’m a non-Native invasive species, or a native species?”
I think I know why the glass window is there! Based on its location I think it’s meant to lure the mouse in by making it believe there’s another exit right across so it’s safe enough to go in, the mouse of course won’t see the glass.
I think it'd be neat if you did a documentary for each of the critters you catch that covers their habitats, lifecycles, etc. It's amazing the things I've learned from watching your videos, keep up the great work!
I'm pretty sure this once was a self resetting multiple catch mousetrap. As the patent drawing shows, there seems to be a piece missing on the top of the trapdoor. There's a seesaw at the passage to the side compartment with a lever and a counterweight attached to it. This lever would lift up the trapdoor if this piece was still there. Downside of the design seems to be - there's no need for the mouse to enter the side compartment - plenty of space and food in the "lobby". 😉
If there's one thing I've learned about antiques - it's that there's often a large difference between how much something is worth and how much it costs!
@@ShawnWoodsMousetrapMonday I killed my solitary Rat with Brodifacoum. {He got in via back door and ate the wheat in my fabric doorstop... I couldn't find his body..but our area {port City} has had a significant increase in Rat population since 'Lockdown'...Not a fan of poison, but can't risk a rat in a house.
Aside from being a window into the trap itself, I think the glass window serves as part of the mechanics of the trap. The window serves as a false entrance/exit, kind of like when The Roadrunner goes into a painted tunnel only to have Wile E. Coyote smash into it. A scampering mouse will be more inclined to go further into the trap thinking there is another way out only to have it's hopes trapped. But as we've seen it doesn't quite work... Would you consider sending your trap to a TH-cam restorer, ie: MyMechanics, Hand Tool Rescue? Would be great to see the trap in its prime!
Perhaps the clear window was originally a mirror to lure the mouse with its reflection. It might make it feel safer if there is already another mouse inside. What does the patent say?
we've got to know what kind of trail cam you are using! those are some fantastic pictures of wildlife. we dont have nearly that fascinating a variety of fauna here, but i would love to figure out what is eating the tomatoes and cucumbers in my little garden.
I just think it's amazing that the mice still trust anything you put out like "hey my family went missing after dinner in a bucket but now I'm gonna have dinner in this box!😭😭"
487 dollars is my guess and by the way I don't say this near enough but I want to thank you for all your tirelessly hard work that you put in each and every day on the videos they are super awesome so thank you very much
@Shaun Woods.. would be interesting if you could do a "massive" mousetraps event.. set up as many mousetraps you have in your collection in single night and let's see how many mouse/rat would be caught in a night.. :)
1$! Lol! I know its much more... love the trail cam! Shawn lives in a menagerie! Haha one overrun by Mice and Rats! From their perspective you are Gargamel ... lol... how are there still invasive mice within 50 miles of you... dont they watch TH-cam?!
Its funny seeing your wildlife where i live the possums look super ratty and our raccoons are about the size of medium dogs. Do you plan on reviewing more racoon traps?
Unless modern mice are much bigger than those from 100+ years ago, this looked like the guy who design it had never seen a mouse: can't expect a catch trap to catch anything with any sort of reliability when the trigger isn't deep enough into the trap for the mouse's body to clear the door.
You are going to create a super intelligent strain of mice with this traps. All the mice smart enough to not get trapped will pass on those genes while those who aren't die. Evolution at hyperspeed

Thank you to everyone who guessed the value of this trap. The correct answer is $1,200. Great Job to everyone who listed the correct answer.

I love when something is rare and valuable because it used to be a pointless piece of crap that nobody wanted 😂
1:44 Ka-Chunk! That's one well fed pet mouse. So big the trapdoor couldn't close on it. And it didn't even mind.
I'll bet this trap was too costly to make, making it expensive. Couple that with it not being very effective, it's no wonder it is rare.
On camera: “I’m going to Humanely dispatch it”
Off camera: empty’s a whole Ak47 clip on mouse
maybe they thought the window would trick the mice into thinking there's an exit?

First thing I said lmao.
You guys must be new here.
Newbie
I love how varied your wildlife is! It's always exciting to see every type of animal. Have you had any bears, or are they not in your area?
I think its a "novelty" trap because the second chamber was to accommodate the mouse as a pet this was 1870's after all
The trap could have been set agaisnt the wall? The window used so the mouse things its a tunnel? So they'd run straight through?
i love you shawn! i’ve been a fan of your since two years ago! it’s been my dream for you to reply and it will really make my day! please reply 🥺💕
Thanks for watching for 2 years. I appreciate your support

$688.00 guess for old metal mouse trap.

The raccoon followed the trail of the Opossum 😂
What would keep the mouse from pushing up the lid to escape?
Intelligence

I wonder how big mice were back in the days compared to today? might have been slightly smaller?
1100 is my guess, really cool trap!
Im thinking the same price range, plus or minus a few bucks.👍
Pretty good guess m8
I was waiting for this upload
I wonder if This Old Tony (TOT) could update that for you with some improvements.
What trail camera do you use? Thanks.
The window / glass is so the mouse thinks it cant walk through thinking it isnt closed in.
Hi Shawn, I think that trap cost around $900. You have an awesome property, love all the different animals that come to visit.
The Royal No 1 trap has a very French look to it! Gorgeous design!
Seems like maybe it would work better against the wall, so the mouse would think he could just continue forward, being fooled by the clear door.
I have no idea why I watch all these videos. I got rid of the mice I had but love watching your videos. Ty
1:42 CHONK
You previously said that the Royal sells between $1,995 & $2,500. Yours is a really nice example... so I am guessing $2,250 for the Novelty trap.
1:46 the mouse was like it seems to be I've been impaled.
I just think it's amazing that the mice still trust anything you put out like "hey my family went missing after dinner in a bucket but now I'm gonna have dinner in this box!😭😭"
The rats seem to have figured it out. They don't fall for much.
Great video, as always Shawn! My guess for the trap value is $2750.
I will guess $ 7500.00, and I think that would be on the low side. Shawn these videos never get old. Thank You for all your time.
I am always amazed by the wildlife you have near you
May not be the best mouse trap, but sure did catch Shawn!
You should link the uncensored full videos from your website in the comments or description of your video.
Yeah, this one is definitely a bit wonky. They put in redundant features, yet didn't think to put the stepping plate far enough away from the door...

The fawn looked kind of small for this late in the year, so I'm guessing this was recorded a ways back?
Like the trail camera footage of the other animals.

$3000 love seeing the critters, bobcat and quail
Probably around $3000 I would say, it's amazing the variety in mouse traps, even if some are better as decor.
$235.00 plus shipping???????? Love the video, that bob cat is a wonderful sight
I think if you put the mouse on a dinnerplate with a fork and spoon the raccoons would know it's dinner time
