Very interesting, Mr. Shawn. I'm glad you procured a new piece for your collection. This channel, because of you, is very interesting and I look forward to every new episode!! I wish the best to you and your family.
Really great video Shawn! Was really fun to see the wildlife in your backyard. And I do believe we saw a little mouse who may be featured in future video! The raccoon was a hoot! Seemed very distracted, in fact I wasn't even sure that it actually ate the mouse because it was just handling it and dropping it and sort of seemed distracted and indifferent. What a difference from the skunk who was on that scent trail like a bloodhound. Amazing to think that there are other collectors of unique and antique mouse and rat traps.
I was involved in the last number of years restoring certain antiques, parts were very hard to find and when you found an original part, it was not unusual to disassemble it and have a mold made to reproduce those parts. If I were you and that was a $3000 mouse trap, I would disassemble it and have a company that specializes in castings remake that trap. It looks like three large parts to me a top bottom and a spring easily re-produced nowadays, 3-D printed to start with and then with cast-iron. It will help you get some of your money back. If it makes you feel better mark them as reproductions, I would.
Maybe the trap actually is a reproduction? How could you tell the difference, if it was well made? I once collected ww2 artifacts, and there you really had to be careful. Due to high prices, a lot of fakes, I mean “reproductions” were made.
@@jakeforrest That’s a very good point, I hadn’t considered that I should know better. It is extremely well-made and today’s cast-iron products because of the contaminated iron that they’re using usually don’t look that good. We had to specify what we wanted it made out of and never reclaimed material. I once drove 200 miles north to New York, I lived in Pennsylvania and went to Falconer N,Y, sent the part to Minnesota, had it re-cast. Then went to Warren Ohio for 30 hours of machine work. Additionally they were brass parts that had to be made as well and then back up to New York to replace the item to the owner. Restoration doesn’t come cheap.

Cast iron is brittle. I wonder how many cast iron traps cracked way back when and were discarded...
Between that and rust it might explain why those that are left are worth $3000.

I was somewhat surprised the spring was strong enough to either kill or hold a mouse. It didn't look it.
I thought there would not be sufficient travel between the jaws as it is rather small in size, thus not enough acceleration to snap the mouse's head.
