    I was involved in the last number of years restoring certain antiques, parts were very hard to find and when you found an original part, it was not unusual to disassemble it and have a mold made to reproduce those parts. If I were you and that was a $3000 mouse trap, I would disassemble it and have a company that specializes in castings remake that trap.
    It looks like three large parts to me a top bottom and a spring easily re-produced nowadays, 3-D printed to start with and then with cast-iron. It will help you get some of your money back. If it makes you feel better mark them as reproductions, I would.

    • @jakeforrest
      @jakeforrest 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe the trap actually is a reproduction?
      How could you tell the difference, if it was well made?
      I once collected ww2 artifacts, and there you really had to be careful. Due to high prices, a lot of fakes, I mean “reproductions” were made.

      That’s a very good point, I hadn’t considered that I should know better. It is extremely well-made and today’s cast-iron products because of the contaminated iron that they’re using usually don’t look that good. We had to specify what we wanted it made out of and never reclaimed material. I once drove 200 miles north to New York, I lived in Pennsylvania and went to Falconer N,Y, sent the part to Minnesota, had it re-cast. Then went to Warren Ohio for 30 hours of machine work. Additionally they were brass parts that had to be made as well and then back up to New York to replace the item to the owner. Restoration doesn’t come cheap.

Seemed very distracted, in fact I wasn't even sure that it actually ate the mouse because it was just handling it and dropping it and sort of seemed distracted and indifferent. What a difference from the skunk who was on that scent trail like a bloodhound.

      They aren't just for entertainment. Knowing where to shoot an animal to dispatch it in the fastest least painful way is educational. It takes an enormous amount of skill to make these shots more than 80% of the time and at ranges over 25 yards. It's also a good way to make money and help with public health (how would you feel if you knew no one was trying to control the population of the rats on the farm where your milk comes from)?

    That took a lot of time and effort to make. Cast iron during the 19th century was done with pride. Ironic so much care went into a mouse trap.

    You have likely answered this in a past video, but where did you get the list of mousetraps? Is it from patents? And if it is from patents, does it list patents worldwide, or do you have to search country to country? I don’t plan on collecting mousetraps, but the information might be valuable for me if I want to start a collection someday. Thanks!

    you werent even phased when that trap came down at the end on your finger, either the mouse must have suffered a little or you are used to this, i used to set dozens of snap traps they would at times snap on me, rat or mouse and they all kinda suckedin the end it is nice to see a 100+ year old trap preserved and still working!
