  • Learn how to make video tutorials for students in Sam Kary's education technology tutorial. In this video, teachers will learn the basics of how to set up and use Screencastify to record tutorial videos and share them with students on Google Classroom.
    Sam always creates screen capture videos before rolling out new tech programs because they are easy to make, and help students retain information, as well as learn at their own pace.
    Screencastify video tutorials are also a great tool if you are using a flipped classroom model.

      Thank you for this! I work with non profit organizations quite a bit and it’s always a challenge to find solution that we can afford.
      Question: Does it allow you to temporarily zoom into a portion of your screen? That focus dot is too small for my audience who tends to have trouble reading small text.

    Here are two questions I have:
    1. how did you put yourself in front of the screen?
    2. how were you able to manipulate and direct your screen around the page in your video. I'll look for additional material on your channel videos.

I think the most important thing I found when I started doing it was writing out a bullet-pointed list of the key points I wanted to make so that I didn't end up rambling on. With practice you'll become more comfortable, and you also don't have to make perfect videos, your students will understand! Best of luck this year!

    • @NewEdTechClassroom
      @NewEdTechClassroom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! Since Screencastify is a Google Chrome extension, I don't think you can use it to record a doc cam. If you are trying to record something you are doing with your hands, you might just try having someone film you with an iPhone and then uploading that video (that's what I do for those types of tutorials!). There are other programs like Explain Everything that you might find useful as well. explaineverything.com/

    Great tutorial! I made a shortcut to your tutorials because I need to learn everything before schools starts :) OK so two questions: 1) where do I locate my Screencastify videos and 2) what is the best way to show two windows (tabs) at the same time on my Chromebook? Thank you!

    • @NewEdTechClassroom
      @NewEdTechClassroom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Meghan, so sorry for the long delay in responding here. You can find your screencastify videos in a folder in your Google Drive called Screencastify. As far as showing two tabs at once, your best bet is to split your screen. You can use a screen splitter like Tab Resize to split your screen into different parts (e.g. halves or quadrants).

    Hi, there. I am a biology teacher using Screencastify for the first time. I want to be able to write with more precision than the online tool provides. For example, if I need to write-out a genetics problem (Punnett square or an equation), I don't want it to look like a mess! My question is, can I use an external writing pad with this app? If so, please make a video on how to use it! If not, what do you recommend. Thank you!

    • @NewEdTechClassroom
      @NewEdTechClassroom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have a lot of experience with this specifically b/c I'm a Humanities teacher, but my understanding is that EquatiO is a very popular digital tool for math that might help you here: www.texthelp.com/en-us/products/equatio/
      You could add EquatiO as a Google Chrome extension and then make your video tutorial. You also might want to check out an app like Explain Everything, which might be more in line with what you're trying to do: explaineverything.com/

      Hi Andy, I use Screenflow for my TH-cam videos, which allows you to chromakey out the green. Unfortunately Screencastify doesn't off chromakey yet, though I suspect at some point in the future they will, or some sort of virtual background.

      Hi, I think the most important thing you would need would be a stand for the smartphone, though that will only record you talking, as opposed to also recording what you are doing on your screen. I'm not currently aware of any screen capture programs that can be used with a smartphone (you can't use extensions w/ a smartphone), but there might be a way that I just don't know about. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful on this one!

    I have a few questions.

      You're welcome, Warren! I don't think it matters much whether or not a teacher has access to a touchscreen device. Mac v. Windows is more of a personal preference. Both will allow you to do awesome things with technology! I'm a Mac user myself.

      You're welcome! Technically I am still in a box, but I film with a green screen behind me and then use video editing software (Screenflow) to edit out the green. Unfortunately you can't edit out green with Screencastify: you'll need more advanced editing software for that (plus much more time involved for the editing process).
