Some distant relatives of mine were in the order of the dragon and according to the family archives their account of what Vlad Dracula did with regard to nailing anything to anybody's head was the Ottoman ambassadors refuse to remove their turbans in his presence and so he nailed them to their heads then impaled them and left them to die. Not simply because their message displeased him but the additional insult of them wanting their religion in a place where they don't have any Authority was really offensive to him. It was very much a "you have no power here." move. Their message basically being surrender now or we will overrun you with our vast armies. Vald was not interested, he was fully prepared for war and had been studying the Ottomans during his imprisonment he knew exactly how to terrify them and arguably he stopped the advance of the Ottoman Empire into Europe so. Maybe it simply takes a monster to stop a monster. From family sources I can also confirm that he was imprisoned for a while at Castle Braun. Like most noble captives he was not kept in the dungeons or anything like that. He was kept in a room lower than his proper rank as sort of an insult but was still allowed most of his other privileges as long as he made no attempt to escape. This is actually where he wins a lot of followers, young Squires and men who would later become Knights. Who actually follow Vlad back to take Wallachia. At least from our records his time at Castle Braun is what makes him see the Ottomans as the greater threat to christenedom so later needing the bigger Army, he made the only sensible deal he could. In his own screwed-up way he comes to understand that the killing of his father and brother was just politics and truly wasn't anything personal. I’ve said this before, but it would be great if you could do something on 9/11 with the 20th anniversary coming up in two weeks. Some people say it’s too recent to cover but there’s a whole generation that doesn’t remember it. I think the time has come to put it in context and frame it as a historical event, even with just a one shot episode.
As a Romanian, i can confirm the romanian pronunciation, which is Va-la-hia. Yup, no k in there, but with a pronounced H sound. Also Targoviste, with e sound at the end sounded good for Ro pronunciation :) Was a cool series in an awesome show. Keep it up!
About Mathias's campaign on Bohemia: He could do it because he signed peace treaty with Mehmed several times. He was smart enough to realize he could not win against the Ottomans on the long run. The Hungarian nobles were angry with him because of this choice, they wanted him to fight the Ottomans as his father John Hunyadi did.
In both cases of the pronunciation of the words Valahia and Târgoviște the latter pronunciation is the correct one: Vah-lahk-iya. In any case as a Romanian I think it's pretty nice to see there is an interest in the real historical figures like Vlad Țepeș, rather than the simplistic Hollywood trope about vampires, especially with a character like Vlad, with endless myths and legends.
In the case of Wallachia I have heard it pronounced mostly like the two mentioned pronunciations Wah-lake-E-ah and Vha-lahk-E-ah but also as Wu-Lahk-he-ah. It may be that some dictionaries didn't get their pronunciations right or it may be like Ireland where every different dialect has a completely different yet equally correct pronunciation
A few people joke in the comments about the undertitles. But on a more serious side: Please make good untertitles. They help a lot, exspecially if you fear that the audio is not good.

Subtle Mr. Rath, subtle. You may be pleased to know that the book is very highly recommended on the 40k pages I am a member of. It's been bumped up to next read for me when I am finished my current novel.
The point about Columbus is something I hadn't considered. I've never been swayed by the "erase him from history, he did bad things" mentality, since that's true of almost everyone from history who did something impactful - it was almost always at the expense of someone else we don't remember, but the "asterisk by their name" as ERBOH put it, is also very necessary. I'm glad the Washington Irving fairy tale version of Columbus is finally dying, but I wish people were taught alongside it the important history like this about WHY the fairy tales were a thing. Washington Irving, as I understand it, wanted kids to have historical heroes so he manufactured them, but this could be why Columbus was even considered for a fairy tale hero treatment by Irving. Realizing this was such a vital thing to the Italian immigrants who were discriminated against puts the "tear it down" crowd in a new light. I could see tearing down the statues and renaming the streets after that generation is gone, but even with the history being fictionalized, I totally understand why it would be offensive to tear those statues down. I wish we could have an openness about the evil done by the people that groups hold up without tearing those groups down, but that's exactly how openness about the heroes of many still-oppressed groups is leveraged today. (Since TH-cam comments contain horrible people posting vile things on burner accounts, I'm going to just note that I'll report and mute anyone who replies with racism or bigotry, whether it's against Italian Americans, Native Americans or any other group. If you see me not responding to them, that's why.)
@@doomdimensiondweller5627 I'm confused. Who isn't taking issue with that? Their ongoing denial of the Armenian Genocide is a major criticism. And frankly I can see a good parallel there - those two figures are important to their history, while also having participated in something vile. If the Turks put their equivalent of an asterisk there and acknowledged what those two (and others) did, it shouldn't be an issue anymore.
@@Merennulli What I am saying is that despite the atrocities committed by Ataturk and Evner Pasha. No one takes issue with Turks celebrating these figures because they are important to Turks. I don't see why we can't extend the same leeway to Italian Americans to celebrate Christopher Columbus despite his bad actions.
@@doomdimensiondweller5627 I don't think it's fair to say no one takes issue with it. But I agree with your conclusion that we should allow people to celebrate the accomplishments of their important historical figures with acknowledgement of the atrocities they also committed.

Case in point, some of Vlad's physical features like having a mustache, his tendency to drink blood, being of noble birth, and how Dracula is both revealed and claiming to be a great warrior earlier in life.

Funny how it's "Vlad did this", "Vlad did that", but the reality is that one person wouldn't be able to do many or any of those things alone. My point? Well, like Hitler, Vlad was certainly in charge - but he had a lot of help. That help was doing the heavy work, the dirty work. For the story to be couched in terms of Vlad's actions, it wipes out the truth. The truth is that he led a huge movement of people that were pretty much OK with that work. Huge difference. It makes these men - men. Not monsters.

Some people say it’s too recent to cover but there’s a whole generation that doesn’t remember it. I think the time has come to put it in context and frame it as a historical event, even with just a one shot episode.
Yeah

As long as Matt redoes the Ra Ra Rasputin song at some point we good, glad we’re dipping our toes back into Rasputin.
yes, we need to see at least a reference to that glorious song
alright, so i'll put you down for John Hunyadi/Stephen the Great series. i'll be waiting
As a Romanian, i can confirm the romanian pronunciation, which is Va-la-hia. Yup, no k in there, but with a pronounced H sound.
Also Targoviste, with e sound at the end sounded good for Ro pronunciation :)
Was a cool series in an awesome show.
Cool episode ngl!
I'd be interested by a series on Gilles de Rais, speaking of historical figures perceived as monsters.
18:46 hopefully Emu is pronounced correctly though 😀
LOL I see Warhammer 40K book on your desk! The Infinite and the Divine. Someone is a Trazyn fanboy!
Did ya notice his names on it? He wrote it XD
Is also the author of said book
@@VarVult99 Even more LOLZ because I did not know that!
Very excited for the "Conquest of India"!
A few people joke in the comments about the undertitles. But on a more serious side: Please make good untertitles. They help a lot, exspecially if you fear that the audio is not good.
Would like to see a series on Albania and skanderberg. Both him and vlad were the scourge of the ottomans and did a lot to stop the ottomans making it to fracture Italy in time
Since I study medicine I am looking forward to seeing
if you explain whether Rasputin was really able to improve the tsarevich 's health problems caused by hemophilia and if yes, how he did it.
"The Infinite and the Divine".... Nice Warhammer 40K book
I am so hype for the Emu War
Good thing the cassowaries didn’t join the fight
Time to hear an American say eMoo over and over while the comments are full of the same tired joke.
Subtle Mr. Rath, subtle. You may be pleased to know that the book is very highly recommended on the 40k pages I am a member of. It's been bumped up to next read for me when I am finished my current novel.
LOVE U GUYS PLS KEEP DOING A GOOD JOB. Maybe a video about the revolutionary war or the civil war?
Fun fact EXTRA Credits help s0 many in exams
thank you alot stay safe all :)
Vlad Tepes was an just leader and a devout Christian. We need more people like him.
15:09
It's like youtube.
Vlad isn't an anti-hero. He is THE mutherfuckin Hero!
I was wondering when it will come:))) as a Romanian i sawed and wondered when will u post it, bc some guy completely understand vlad the wrong way:)
I'd be really excited for a Michael the Brave series
22:54 Didn't Colombus venture toward Puerto Rico?
Yes, he landed there during both the second and fourth voyages. And during the second voyage he landed on the Virgin Islands.
@@jonnunn4196 so he just never came to mainland US, in which case maybe Cabot or Verrazano should have been picked
The way I see it is this. No one takes issue with Turks celebrating Ataturk and Enver Pasha despite all the bad things they have done.
Key thing i should mention is that one of the reasons vlad was abit crazy was cause his wife who he loved dearly had gotten a letter saying he was dead so thinking there was no hope she jumped to her death but really vlad was still alive and when he found out he lost his mind.
Just thought I'd put that out there
PANR has tuned in.

As you mentioned the "Erfurt Latrine Disaster" Episode, when do you do the "LIES" episode for that blunder?
speaking of i doubt they thought it was a happy event..
but the emo war tho haha
Oh i can give a small "lie" about that episode that i found by just reading the wikipedia article after i watched the episode.
King Henry didnt have to cling to the wall to not fall down he was sitting in a recess in the wall and was safe there until he was rescued.
@@rakdos36 That is quite harmless. 1. The event happened at St. Mary, not St. Peter (The monks of St. Peter just recorded it in their chronicles. 2. St Peter never was a Cathredral. 3. Erfurt did not even have a Cathedral at that time.
He cleared the nation of thives! He defended the nation! He found his nation his home in a corupt mess. He did horroble things yes he did.

i love how one of the most famous stories about Vlad is probably famous because its that one time he killed two guys by NOT impaling them!
-everyone should aspire to be as equalitarian as Vlad was... impaling is optional, probably not a financially good idea
-but you guys already made a fantastic video on Rasputin :^)
-looking forward to the great Emu War videos
Love the little plug of his book on the table
still better than Netflix one
You have heard of Brasov
Now get ready for
BRUHSOV
Regardless of what the facts may say, Vlad (to me) will always remain one of the main inspirations behind Dracula. I think people often confuse based on with inspired by. I know Dracula wasn't entirely based on Vlad as a whole, but Stoker's character was nonetheless inspired by Vlad. Case in point, some of Vlad's physical features like having a mustache, his tendency to drink blood, being of noble birth, and how Dracula is both revealed and claiming to be a great warrior earlier in life.
nice divine and the infinite best wh40k story imho
In future videos can you bring better audio equipment to increase audio quality. It's hard to hear well over the room "echo".
Romanian pronunciation is very different from English, mainly because the vowels only have one sound, and also the special vowels ă and â, which are essentially deeper version of a. I have been to both Poenari and Bran castles and the hike up to Poenari is very worth it. Bran is very nice but filled with tourists.
Uhm, you wrote the best 40k book in existence. Thanks fam.
love the t&c sticker
Can we PLEASE get a series on Götz von Berlichingen?! 16th century cyborg commando mercenary, outlawed multiple times by the church, literally told a priest to lick his ass when ordered to surrender, possible inspiration for Guts from Berserk... You JUST MENTIONED HIM. Can we please have a series on him?
something tells me that the chsracter Guts in 'Berserk' is based on him (the setting is also similar)
Yall should do an "Extra Lit" diving into novels.
21:52 It bogles my mind why we haven't completely replaced Columbus with Leaf Erickson or John Cabot America's psych! I mean, both Leaf and John just make way more sense as America's "discoverer's" then Columbus in every way!
Thats good
Conquest of india
I want you to dig deep into indian history as it is very little known
*Read the video title
Yeah someone called impaler is probably not trustworthy
All the best with your family business. Fingers crossed everything turns out okay. This was a great and attention impaling series of videos.
You did get pretty close with the pronunciation, especially for an English speaker. I think us Romanians don't really correct foreigners when it comes to pronunciation because we are just so happy and giddy that people take an interest in our culture
Great video but the audio quality was very disappointing
Comparing Vlad's national status as a hero to that of Columbus is extremely apt. Columbus was brutal enough that he was fired by Isabella and Ferdinand- the same monarchs who went A-OK to the Inquisition.
The Infinite and The Divine is a great book!
Because 2021 comes to the end in 4 months and in 2021 modern Greece has completed 200 years of existance, could you make a video about greek revolution or any important character of it ?
I guess, but probably the series won't come until 2022.
I swear to god if you go into the Emu War series still pronouncing it "ee-moo", Im gonna be real nettled
Extra Grimdark when?
what happened to Walpole :(
Hey Rob remember that Elizabeth Bathory lady that killed alot of girls in her town and got away with it for a long long time could you do a series on her and her family I also heard they were mostly inbread
The version I heard was that Götz von Berlichingen had his hand shot off. As an aside, you should totally do an episode or series on Götz.
Yes please he is also the source for my favourite german insult
The infinite and the divine is an awesome book, I hope you enjoyed it :)
From what I know Vlad the Impaler lived in Targoviste and the Poienari Citadel
Hyped for Rasputin!
I love me some Lies.
Well, maybe the vampire Dracula wasn't Vlad, but someone who admired or was emotionally scarred by him and so adopted the name
Grief, I'm doing fan-theories of Dracula on a history channel.
But that's good to know. Things are complicated and people who want simple answers are really missing out.
Now I'd thought the Columbus thing had been pushed by the Irish because they wanted Catholic heroes. But I could be wrong.
Wait, why are you guys doing Rasputin again? I thought the first video was very comprehensive as is.
Please go to first hand accounts. The man was considered a Hero for a very good reason, retrospective in a culture that is not fighting for survival for its religious cultural and ethical values is not going to give a fair shake of a situation where another society took drastic actions to combat a power attempting world conquest.
