First time getting called out by Scully was in 2018 at North Central Regional Finals. I remember hearing about him at some point because of the Immersion RC Power Meter and something called "Scully mode." People saying he was this impressive announcer. "How hard can it be? Its a drone race." Clearly I wasn't impressed at all. Bunch of nerds in a field flying toys, this guy can't be anything special. Even during qualifying at NCRF it was kind of "ok, hes talking, but whatever." I was lucky enough to make it to brackets, and that is when I understood the magic that is Joe Scully. As both a pilot who has raced in numerous events where he is announcing, as well as being an organizer myself, I still don't understand how he does it. Locally, I can barely talk coherently about 2-3 pilots let alone 4-8! Being able to speak to relevant information at the pace that is required at high levels of drone racing is exceedingly difficult, and over the last 5yrs I haven't seen almost anyone else come close.
I’ll never forget the first time I experienced the announcer curse, after qualifying for World Cup ‘17 I was racing against Madair, Wild Willy, Jet, and a few other amazing pilots from that point in time. On the 2nd lap I had caught up to Wild Willy then Scully mentioned “and here comes Slow Poke with the clean pass” which triggered the curse and I slammed into the next gate. Good times :)
great interview Jon, me and Joe talked a good bit sunday at mayhem individual racing. He has done a lot of cool stuff. He's announced for monster jam also. The man is a legend!!!
It was always amazing to see how quickly he would correlate live stats to what is happening and provide commentary. Anyone recalls backstage IDSC Korea in English? True savage as well :) Who has more fun than us? Noooooooobody!
Joe is such a legend! It's true you haven't experienced a true race until its commentated by Mr Scully 🙏 I used to goof around announcing races in his voice when my mates would practice, and for a while my FPV handle was Bro Scully so when I finally met him at the Aussie Open back in the day we hit it right off 😂
I was at MayHem 2023 and was battering against another local pilot... ( I don't recall who ). I heard "ADK" from Sully and thought I committed a foul then realized he was commenting on my battle. Luckily I didn't crash, but it was so cool to hear him call my pilot name. Later, after the event was over, I met him for the first time and commented about his announcer ability and voice. I don't think any drone race would be a drone race without him.
Joe Scully is THE VOICE of drone racing, period.
