I run a drone racing club at a university, what keeps new members involved is when we let them fly our club owned drones, we have a fleet of tiny hawks and a training process that takes people from never having flown before to their first race. We preach the “come to your first race ASAP” and find everyone has always been welcoming to us bringing new members who can barely fly through a gate. As long as they know the basics (change channels, race procedures, etc.) providing a supportive environment and cheering them on always guarantees they have a great time at their first race.

My advise for anyone who is new to FPV just go to a race and have fun. I just competed at my first drone race two days ago and I had a blast! It was an indoor race put on by my local MultiGP chapter where you could fly anything 3.1 inches or smaller. I just built my first tiny trainer but it still had some issues so I ended up using my Tiny Whoop. I came in last which I knew I would but I'm pretty proud that I was only 17 seconds slower than the racer in front of me and he was flying a Tiny Trainer so for me that was a personal win. I even won one of the heats because everyone else crashed out while I finished my laps. I'm so hooked and I can't wait till my next race.

This is a great topic to cover Jon! Equally it is a difficult question to answer, I was really lucky to have someone that was willing to race with me 1 on 1 privately and then come with me to races to spot me and teach me 'race etiquette'. If you can find someone out there that is willing to take you on as their Quad Padawan definitely don't waste the opportunity, it will teach you a lot and will help alleviate pressures at races.

Im in Erie Pennsylvania. Done racing was big here 2015-2018. Weekly racing, freestyle meets, mostly were college kids hosting up once graduation they left & it. Fell apart. Im still around.
Flying at schools & parks with both fpv & planes getting yelled at. I have 30 acres of homestead. But every day at your home gets boring. With no one else to fly with going to Bandos isn’t much fun,
I use my drones mainly now for Search & Rescue missions for my local fire department & trainings.
To ground RC. Rock crawling & carpet racing all we have local.

Really need a feeder type of sport to get people more comfortable with 5in drone racing. I started with whoops and was really intimidated by the 5inch racing that the big club was running. So, whoop events, then 3in tiny trainer spec, then 5in open class seems like a good progression

Same, we invite all skill levels out to our weekly night spot flights. Trying a new thing here to go to where potential pilots might be (RC car racers). Crossing my fingers we start to build more pilots slowly.

@@JonE5FPV I’ve started up an after school club at my local HS 1 night s week. We alternate between velocidrone and tiny whoop flying. I have anywhere from 2-8 kids who have an in test right now. Every little bit helps. Thing is I supply all the gear for them to use with my old analog whoops. It’s not like they have there own income stream. Trying to brainstorm other ways to invite people. Doing a few Tiny trainer Exhibition races this year but still seeing the same 3-5 pilots at our weekly races. 🤷‍♂️

Full Send FPV and Scale Science RC were sharing the same space for a few years. Drifting on Friday nights and the rest of the week was tiny whoop racing. Pretty cool idea until the drifting was growing too much and they needed their own space.

Literally heard something like this today with a local freestyle pilot I just met. He got into the hobby about a year and a half ago and has been flying freestyle a ton and when I brought up racing he said he saw videos of people racing and just couldn't wrap his head around it or imagine himself ever being able to race like those people so he just wants to fly freestyle and has no interest in racing. That seems to be a common sentiment, especially since the top racers are getting faster and faster, plus all of the technical hurdles, costs and time involved with racing. It's a lot and can seem unreachable for most casual FPV pilots.

I think it is very necessary to have a super simple course when trying to bring people into drone racing. The super complicated courses are what intimidates people more than the speed of the quads.

That's a tough one...I would suggest "loaning" a goggle/quad setup to the RC Car joint for people to casually try out and maybe hook 'em. I understand that this might not be fiscally viable but I could see someone trying it out when the "pros" aren't around.

Wow dude this is super relatable. A lot of people ask me if I race and the answer is always no. I fly fpv but I’m super intimidated by the pros I cover that I don’t even attempt to race.
I feel like a big reason is also cause I only fly DJI. I’m intimidated by stuff breaking and having to invest in a new drone and have the best props and radios and controllers, I’d have to learn beta flight and after all that I’ll still come in last and crash a bunch and be embarrassed. 😂
Fear of having the wrong gear, not being able to fly it, and wasting a bunch of money. But you’re right, I just need to try it out. No one ever learned from sitting around and waiting to get good

    • @JonE5FPV
      @JonE5FPV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That seems to be a common thought, but for sure dont be scared to crash or even get last. When i started, i didnt know, but Limon and Grower were the fastest in town along with a few others, and in a couple years would both be globally ranked in the top 20. It was SOOO fun, i didnt mind coming in last place almost my entire first year, I was just happy to be there. Because i lived in same town with those guys, i really had no hopes for podiums or anything like that. The DRL race in Miami, was actually the first race ive ever covered on my channel that I did not compete in.
There wasnt as much interstate competition back then, and it was interesting to see how fast our top guys were compared to the rest of the country. Racing in the Costa Rica Race with headsup, minchan, alex, amari and the rest was incredible. And it was FOR SURE super intimidating, I actually just had a goal not to get last place. But ended up 5th place in the next 16 bracket, (while limon got 5th in the faster bracket behind MCK and Alex).
I was super excited to get 5th place a couple weeks ago at the Texas Long race, where Alex, Amari, Mondo, Grower, Limon and a bunch of other top pilots competed. I wasnt nearly as fast as them in qualifying, but managed to stay consistent under the pressure in the brackets. Next up will be Mayhem and Ice race and i go in against those top pilots with my same goal, just not to get last place. And even if i do, i wont be disappointed.
When we hosted Halowalker in houston as a foreign exchange student, we got to see him fly his first few packs on a track ever. He wasnt beating any of us back then at age 15-16, but look at him now.
We all start somewhere, any time i ever got discouraged, Limon would be quick to remind me that, I am closer to his speed than he is to Vanover, Headsup or MCK.
You are welcome any time at our night spot, and im sure any other chapter would be glad to have you as well.

For anyone reading this that thinks they even MIGHT want to race: go to a race!!! Bring the "wrong" equipment, crash, get last place, whatever. It doesn't matter, you're not wasting anyone's time and everyone will be happy to help you. The only way you can get better is to put yourself out there and try. After the race, go home, collect yourself, and prepare for the next one.

Hey Jon, I'll be honest bud I've been apart of the discord and have been solo flying in the Houston area for a few months now. I only have a 3.5 inch, a Cinewhoop and the DJI FPV so I always feel like not only will I not be competitive but also have the wrong drones for the meets. This Tinywhoop comp is a good idea and while I don't have one yet if yall continue to support tinywhoops I feel like that would be a good compromise and worthwhile next purchase.

I want to start racing in real life. I love racing in the sim. I heard a few things in the video that nailed it for me; intimidated (primarily from watching videos online), waiting until I think I’m good enough, and not sure about proper race etiquette are the primary excuses for me. But the main reason is because my local multiGP chapter seems to only have 1 or 2 races a year. I believe that’s just because of attendance. I’d have to travel 3 hours for any racing. I’ve been looking at building my own gates and practice on my own if I can find a location. (Outdoor with 5” because I’m not a fan of tiny whoops)

They are not going to like that carpet getting trashed after a few crashes..
I went to a race way too early. Still don't really want to try after that horrible experience.
the week before the race the Tiny trainer I built desynced on 3rd flight and spent hours looking for it... of course I was also Hours from home...
went with 3 drones the LR drone was the only one that worked. and broke it on first gate.
so like 8 hours or anxiety for 2 minutes of flight.
then I saw how much faster everyone else was and I just felt like I was wasting time.
3 years later.. I might try again... but I get lost on every track I try on VelociDrone...
I've built a Spec 7... have tiny trainer parts...
Looks like a lot of fun, good people...
But honestly the 5" racing is too fast for me to enjoy even watching.
So I have no real desire to grind out and then just see flashes on the screen.

      @SteadyeddieFPV ปีที่แล้ว

Definitely build a Tiny Trainer. They are very durable and fun to fly. Also a lot of people hear racing and think of competing with others. Sometimes it helps to focus on competing against yourself and putting the time in. The improvement will come with time and experience.
