  • LEGO has added yet another large scale passenger airplane. This one seems to ditch the attempt at being and actual airport and instead focuses more on the vehicles and accessories.

    I like the look of the older plane better. With the newer one it's nice to get so many minifigs and the little airport vehicles. Overall, I think it a good set. I will wait to see if I can get it at a discount.

    As an aircraft enthusiast and former aircraft mechanic in the Air Force, a few observations if you will: the rear, or empennage, of the aircraft contains flight controls called stabilizers, or colloquially, stabs. The plane on the left in your comparison has the conventional setup of a vertical and two horizontal stabs, affecting yaw and pitch, respectively. The new plane set has an unconventional V-Tail setup; a bit of reading on the subject indicates potential control inefficiencies with such a setup at takeoff (and likely landing) speeds or in the unfortunate occurrence of an engine loss in flight (something I've personally experienced in a C-130). However, so far as 'rule of cool' goes, it looks neat for a toy plane, giving it a more futuristic look, and I'm fine with that. So far as the forward fuselage shaping goes, or flight deck, the older plane set shaping is sleek with a steep rake similar to smaller business jets, like Gulfstream for example. The new large forward fuselage piece introduced in 2020 has more of a 'forehead' look to it reminiscent of many widebody pax planes from both Boeing and Airbus. I like both, although I like the old sleeker mold better. It just looks very aerodynamic and appealing to the eye. The low hanging engines are common on many transport planes with turbofan engines. The Boeng 737 has the lower part of its nacelles flattened due to its already low ground clearance (the original turbojet engines were long and skinny, whereas turbofan engines are much wider, utilizing the forward fan disk as its primary source of propulsion). The engines on 60367's plane are almost comically wide and the plane rather short from nose to tail, giving it an almost chibi look. But, it's LEGO, and despite recognizing the things that are questionable, I'm still looking very much forward to adding this latest large aircraft set to my collection. Kudos to LEGO for such a well-done interior, an area they usually fall a bit short in these sets. I hope someday they'll do an SST for City Airport; that would be fantastic and hopefully inspire the engineers of tomorrow to create a worthy successor to the venerable Concorde. I appreciate the comparison vid. Heck of a sweet City layout you have there- I'm jelly. :) Leg godt!

    The old plane, externally, looks way better. Could you maybe convert that to include similar features taken from the new planes interior, such as walkways the full length of the plane and a toilet etc. Old plane with new style interior, would that be possible? Would be great to see you attemp it. Thanks for another honest review!

    I have to say the interior on the new plane is amazing and that little sink in the restroom is just genius. If they could combine the exterior of the old plane and interior of the new one, I think it would be a great set to get. Those airport vehicles are also quite nice in the new set.

    I much prefer the older one, the new one looks "unrealistic" with the engines and the general shape/size. It was actually a set I remember wanting when it was new as a child (I did of course want most sets though).

      the engines are probably the only thing that looks good, those and the wingtips, the rest looks wrong, that being said there has never been a city plane that looked has good has the first one, the only other one that got close was the big cargo plane with 4 props

  • @kentslocum
    @kentslocum 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Thanks for this review; I always appreciate comparisons, since many LEGO fans may be considering purchasing a used set on Bricklink instead of the latest model on store shelves. I gotta say that the official photos of the new set didn't do a good job showing off its strange proportions (for obvious reasons 😊). I think if the fuselage was lengthened, however, it would be perfectly fine. Maybe that's just because I'm biased (lime green is my favorite color!), but the support vehicles also really make the new set a win in my book. Still, I have to agree that the older set has a very sleek look.

  • @witchofengineering
    @witchofengineering ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think one thing that has happened with LEGO is the idea behind the airplanes. 7893 that appeared as first big airplane was probably meant to resemble some big wide-body airliner like B767 or A340, while the new one seems like a much smaller narrow-body, B737 or A320. This also is partially responsible for different fuselage proportions and 2 larger engines. It kinda makes sense, a lot of things in LEGO got kinda bigger, (like f.ex. most cars are now 6 studs and there are some even bigger, compared to 4 studs back then) so the plane of the same actual size is meant to model something that's actually smaller. With the exception of a v-tail, I'd say this plane is far more realistic and resembles modern planes better than 7893.

    • @pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042
      @pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I agree, and they actually did a good job on the rear landing gear, unlike the blocky mess that is every other plane.

  • @book_add5151
    @book_add5151 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Me personally I like this plane due to the uniqueness, however one thing i would do is changing the rear tailfins by angling them back a bit to give it more of a swept back look, because looking at the plane on its side the tailfins just look awkward. Otherwise Im fine with this new airplane, however 7893 will always be the king.

    • @user-nq5xe4ho7c
      @user-nq5xe4ho7c 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's exactly why I've put 60367 out of my bucket at the moment, as planes could not fly in reality only with those tapered stabilizing rear fins, and I've also been thinking of altering them to horizontal position and add a proper vertical fin if I would get one eventually, however, it's really hard to find such fin as a scattered part.

    The blue tow truck is the pushback vehicle to reverse out of the parking position before departure (while the engines get started usually), planes don't get towed around after landing, you see that happening at airports sometimes but that's just planes getting towed from and to maintenance... i like that they finally designed a functioning and realistic pushback truck... the design (like in older lego plane sets) with the kind of metal bar that connects the gear and a truck exists in real life as well but as you probably know it's kinda hard to maneuver planes backwards with those lego versions...

    the "wings on the back" are called vertical and horizontal stabilizers. And the stabilizers design on the new one has never been used in a commercial airliner. also the engines are actually accurate because the new planes like the 737 have engines very close to the ground. and the 737, say the -700 has a very small fuselage size too. also tarmac is not a word in the aviation dictionary. but I am glad that the new cockpit look like a 737, so really cool.

    That is probably the tram that goes between terminals. Orlando is close to me and it has the main terminal that has ticketing, security, baggage claim and then a tram takes you to the other terminals that has 20 or so gates in it where you actually board the plane. The trams go back and forth taking people to their plane and then back to baggage claim when they arrive. That would explain why there is no front and back or driver.

    I'm old enough to have gotten set 6544: shuttle transport. The plane wasn't much, but it was the LEGO aesthetic at the time and it used actual bricks. When I first saw 7893, well, you called it with the Duplo. It's ugly and made up of bricks you can only use for this build and it's less LEGO and more a super easy snap together toy.
    The new one is even worse.
    P.S. it's called a V-tail source I legit have an aerospace degree.

    While the older plane is nicer from outside, the new set is much cooler! Gives several airport ground vehicles to play with, a planespotter, and is full of nicer more realistic details (except the V-tail, as an aerospace engineering student that is giving me nightmares…). The larger engines are paradoxically more realistic if it’s a new gen aircraft, since new turbofans are huge in real life! Just look at the A320neo or 777X engines’. The blue vehicle is called “pushback tug” by the way ;)

    New plane is just so much better - the front looks like an actual jet (and not a plane wearing shades), the engines are phenomenally superior, the number of seats and clean walkway are more realistic, and the wings are excellent. People pissed about the v-tail need to recognize that *you will see airliners with a v-tail in your lifetime* - that's the future.

    8:14 The plane probably only needs two engines, in real life a plane about this size wouldn't need more than two. Also, about the tail: the traditional-looking one you mentioned is on most planes, the spilit-tail one look like its used more on fighter jets, not passenger jets. I do prefer the old tail though.

    I understand some of the criticism but compared to some previous models, its a step in the right direction. The split tail is actually based off concept designs from Boeing and Airbus for future hydrogen fueled airliners in 2040. Its actually quite progressive for LEGO to choose that design. In the eighties and nineties, it was an entire airport in the set and when I saw Lego planes today, the shape is not as beautiful as a real plane (shape of the wings, smal vertical rudder comparing to the rest of the plane …) when the guy says that planes before were small, it is true but for a child, it is easier to play with…personably, I bought one of the last planes and I prefered the ancient one but it is just my opinion

    I like the set and I think I will get it even though I have too many airplanes to show in my city already. But I would love to have this in my collection. I like the tail section better on the old one, but I like that they have made the new one "fatter" and with different engines. That way it can clearly be another type of aircraft like the difference between Airbus and Boeing in real life.

    As you said in 8:20, the biggest issue with the new passenger plane is those engines, which force to landing gear to basically be stilts.
    I do have a list of things wrong with the plane, but its too long so in short this one was a step backwards from the 2020 passenger airplane

    honestly I still really like this one, I don’t really see why others despise it, just a difference of opinion I guess. The v tail and big engines are definitley accurate to what future planes are going towards, and planes already have engines that close to the ground. The nose doesn’t bother me at all, if I wasn’t getting the Concorde I would definitley get this set

    • @manifestman132

      I know right the only thing I don’t like is the nose wheel and the lake of a second pair of wheels on the carts but both are easy mods. Maybe tires too but also easy mod.

    • @samwalker8893
      @samwalker8893 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The v tail is not accurate, nor “what design is going to”
      In fact the opposite, the vtail concept does not work, there is no redundancy in it in case of engine failure you cannot produce significant lift over it to keep it in flight. Hence why there are NO vtail airliners in production OTHER then extremely small, private jets with extreme low weight limits sometimes that even exclude fat pilots.
      The “hate” (as you label it) is because taking an hilariously concept vehicle and introducing into a well maintained and purposefully built realistic city is a joke, people spend thousands, tens of thousands producing realistic scenarios and Lego getting mor and more cartoon based every year
      These are not labelled dreamz range etc , they are marketed as city, which when introduced as Legoland by the founder was to build and replicate your town, not build a space hypercentre as other ranges, they are falling between the two with too little consideration now

    • @alegsb3943
      @alegsb3943 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@samwalker8893 now that I have looked into it more, you are right about the v tail. Try to be nicer about correcting people in the future though, sometimes doing that may actually make people like you more. Also, this is just a Lego set. A Lego city set. So the vast majority of people getting it will be kids, and you know what kids like? interesting and unique designs. So at the sacrifice of upmost realism, you get something that most consumers will probably find cool, or interesting at the least. Same goes with adults buying this for their cities, many can forgive the slight non realism because other than that, it is a good set. And because it’s Lego, with a few pieces, (and I mean very few) you can have a normal tail. This isint an 18 plus set, so maybe don’t treat it as one.

      You came in slating an entire community with incorrect and unfactual opinions stating it as truth, which was mythical
      I didn’t insult you, i didnt abuse you, i just pointed out the accuracies
      Now as for your reply, since this is a platform to host discussions and public debate: no it isnt kids buying $120 planes, far from it, certainty in the past, parents dont like buying planes for the exact reason that Alex metioned- no runway, takes loads of room, cant be pushed to a box etc by kid when finished playing. Buying a plane as a parent effectively commits them to buying more to make the airport experience for the kid to use, which at that price point is a turn off.
      It isnt about kids vs adults, my counter is it is city vs dreamz,
      This is a city line product and should be based on the basis of the line: to replicate reality….. if they want to build a concept hybrid vehicle for kids to play with in their mythical lands there are other brands

    I prefer the old Passenger Jet personally. I think the new one has a great selection of minifigs, for sure, but I think it's got too many side builds and the plane itself looks really... stubby. The V tail is neat, but it's a bit gimmicky. I will say I like those dark blue 6x12 angled plates though! Inside is pretty nice, but the outside still looks like a beluga. I expect this thing to be about $150 in Canada, so that's gonna be a no from me.

    That was a nice review and I can totally relate to old vs new plane arguments. Yay interior, exterior could be better. The side builds are great and this minifig head will be ordered from Bricklink as soon as I can. Loved to be part of its first landing in Mindeapolis. 😊 Now I must say, great to have a plane in the city line up again. Generally, I believe kids love planes and there is a market for it for sure. The current prices, however, are mind-boggling. People over here struggle with skyrocketing prices for food, gas, electricity and heating. More and more companies go out of business and people lose rütheir jobs. I say this wondering that with life being tough as it is and families struggle to pay for basic needs, who is supposed to buy a plane like that for their kids or rather look for a cheaper set? am sure it will find an audience waiting for discounts, I doubt the audience paying the actual price will be humangous.
