There is a film online of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the Vienna Philharmonic and Lang Lang recording two Mozart concertos. During the filming a member of the orchestra (it may have been the concertmaster) said, with a mixture of great admiration and reverence, "Whenever Nikolaus Harnoncourt comes here we learn something."
Haydn is the father of the symphony. His music is amazing in harmony, grace and elegance. Viva Haydn a true genius of music that gives us unforgettable moments of pleasure and haunting music. Bravissimo
Actually, he was one of the fathers, but he was the one who found definite solutions allowing the "genre" to virtually achieve its full potentialities. 🤍🖤💜💙💚💛🧡❤💟
Haydn's wonderful music has enriched my life since my childhood and will continue to do so. My favourite symphonies are number 88, 98 and 103 but there are so many masterpieces to enjoy.
I'm 75. I'm a musician, composer, pianist and organist and I'm ashamed to say it's only in the last year or so that I've come to appreciate his greatness, his power of invention, his perfect grasp of form and his depth of emotion. I love him with a passion equalled only by my love of Bach.
I'm 23 and discovered last year Joseph Haydn and his brother, by listening to all of their symphonies. I was astonished 😲 And I can't encourage you enough to go listen to the integrality of his symphonies and MOSTLY the ones of Johann Michael Haydn, that are fabulous 👀🔥
@@alexisarmengaud9985 Michael Haydn’s symphonies are an absolute delight; whilst professionally composed and never dull, the composer does however never stray from his Salzburg comfort zone; in contrast, Joseph Haydn rarely stays in his comfort zone.
No Haydn piece of music is a waste of the enquiring mind’s time. Especially not music like this. Till one knows all the great music of JS Bach and FJ Haydn why go searching anywhere else? It is more than a lifetime’s work to learn all the great music of these two by heart! Best wishes from George
That Menuetto is so good, It fills my heart with joy and happiness in some magical way. I love it as much as Symphony no.73 Menuetto. This symphony though has it all. Then the Adagio cantabile is equally mesmerizing. One of my favorite symphony from starting movement to the very end.
After the energetic 'vivace' and the charming 'menuetto', comes one of the most sublime 'adagios' Haydn or anyone else ever conceived, a totally original concept and inventiveness at its' peak (forget the "Surprise" Symphony, this movement alone is a much greater one, and has more of them). After that experience and the breathless 'presto' finale, I call this one of Haydn's best symphonies, a product of white-hot inspiration. And this performance - wow!
Thank you for sharing your impressions! I always thought this was a neglected masterpiece and was sorry it didn't get a nickname. And I agree with you this symphony is much greater than some more famous ones by Haydn or other composers.
@@DressedForDrowning You’re right that the total number of symphonies is 107, however, we arrive at that number thus: Symphonies 1-104 (Hob. I:1-104) The sinfonia to Le pescatrici (Hob. @@DressedForDrowning I think not; I am sure that the correct number is 107 as detailed in my previous reply. As far as I am aware, there are no lost symphonies, and none that are spurious, so unlike one or two other areas - like the set of missing piano sonatas, or the double-bass concerto of 1763 - there is actually nothing left to be discovered as regards the symphony, and the total cannot change. Part of my certainty over this issue is that Haydn kept a catalogue of his works from the mid-1760’s - the Entwurf-Katalog - where he entered the incipits of the missing keyboard works, but there are no incipits of any missing symphonies, they are all accounted for. In 1805, a second catalogue - the Haydn Verzeichnis - was compiled, and this too contains no missing symphonies. In short, there is no ‘106th’ symphony. Note: some authorities do not include Hob. I rather die having only Schubert's Great symphony (conducted by Harnoncourt) than the whole Bach and Haydn, as good as they can be.
