You don't need to be riding all the time Shoestring. I'm guessing lots of us enjoy just seeing the scenes of you wandering about out in the woods and would enjoy a tour of that old abandoned factory (or whatever it is) that you showed the smokestack of. Stuff like that. You have an audience. People even interested in your little plants you've put in here and there. I sure do. Just wander about all over and shoot whatever you bump into. Speaking for myself, I'll enjoy it. Because I enjoy YOU.

I miss your knowledge, Mark! THANK YOU for 5 years of my life watching and learning about the rail system and the art of living free. I now work for a company that takes rail crews to their destinations or arrivals. I've seen so many switch yards, hump yards and sidings out in the middle of nowhere. Thank you, sir for your knowledge and stories ❤

That metal is swarf, the smell is oil, and or mistic coolant, probably the latter. As soon as I saw it, my life returned to the early 80's when I was an Aircraft Component Engineer. The smell is still fixated in my brain.

Back when Missouri Pacific was still Missouri Pacific and before they put oil in the caboose[crummy] my brother and I ,each November, would shovel 16 tons of coal onto the ground beside the crummy track. Back in the day they heated the caboose with coal. We made $30.00 each for the job. That was good money then.

Shoestring keeps talking about empty yards. That’s the state of the American economy. I’m a truck driver and I will never forget 3 years ago driving by Port Elizabeth and seeing containers stacked on top of each other as far as the eye can see. I’ve been OTR for 20 years and that was the first time I ever saw the ports packed like that. That is the difference between today’s American economy and the economy of 2 or 3 short years ago. I wonder what changed?

The summer I turned 18, I lived right next to the depot in the tiny town where I called home. My sister (she was 15) and I spent that summer hitching rides. We made friends with the crew on the midnight freight train that came through every night. We rode in the locomotive the first two times, but it was cramped. I literally sat on the lap of one of the guys. Later, we rode in the caboose. It had bunk beds and a breakfast nook of sorts. No cupola. That was 1980 and it was BN back then.

They had some old cabooses in peru in. On an old siding that never got moved, near the dormitory restaurant, where the r.r. workers would eat and get a room for the night, i only lived 5 or 6 blocks from there, i met quite a few hobos who camped in the woods along the tracks, waiting for their next ride

Those lathe tailings smell like machining oil. Light SWEET crude. 😉👍

That smell from those metal lathe shavings ,is from the suds a milky white cooling oil that’s sprayed onto the metal so that it’s easier to cut into! Another great video shoestring!
    Thanks bro!

That sweet smell on the metal shavings is the coolant used.
