There was a time When lonely men would wander Through this land Rolling aimlessly along So many times I've heard of their sad story Written in the words Of dead men's songs Down through the years Many men have yearned For freedom Some found it Only on the open road So many tears of blood Have fell around us 'Cause you can't always do what you are told. Please tell me where Have all the hobos gone to I see no fire burning down By the rusty railroad track Could it be that time Has gone and left them Tied up in life's eternal traveling sack. Last Sunday night I wrote a letter To my loved one I signed my name And knew I'd stayed away Too long There was a time When my heart was free to wander And I remember as I sing This hobo song -John Prine
When I was 29 years old, I was working 50 hour weeks in an accounting firm pushing a pencil around a ledger. We didn't have computers back then. It was a slow death.

Deep inside he longed, a deep longing to be free both physically and mentaly. I hope he succeeded in overcoming his own personal challenges. I guess we're all searching for something. RIP bro
Awesome. It's strange that I saw his videos for the first time today and learned of his passing. In one he said he was 32 and was growing tired of such an uncomfortable lifestyle. That he would do a little more and then find something else. It feels like he could have been a musician or a writer or filmmaker. But these videos he did are absolutely amazing. So much fun to watch him enjoy his beer and food. This video ended perfectly.
He was a musician and a film maker. What do you think this video is? He does the music himself by the way. He’s not the best pianist on earth but certainly a pianist and a conceding at the least. I don’t see him as all that original. I’m aware of Hunter S Thompson so seeing him as completely original would be impossible but there’s no denying he was an artist and musician.

Was inspired by this hobo to finally leave the room in the house that I’m currently staying at.. practically I’m becoming a shut-in. Scared to leave. Hesitant to venture out. Terrified to be hurt again by people and society. I struggle with mental health and have over 3 years clean from shooting heroin & I’m still finding it super hard to adjust to normal life after being a street-walking drug-addicted person. Those substances numbed me. And now, all the emotions I have feel so raw. In a way I miss the lifestyle.. that was the most freedom I’ll probably ever get to experience. No boss to fire me, no having to pay rent. You don’t get along with someone you’ve met on the way? Get that shit off your chest. Burn that bridge. Never speak to them again. Take a beating or two & wipe the blood leaking from your nose. I know now that it’s possible to be living off the kindness of strangers and good deeds. It’s quite frankly exhilarating. Sad to say it, but learning that there’s more to life, I kind of have to move on from that ideal. What is really attractive to me is a healthy balance of both freedom & structure.. not sure if structure is even the word, but it’s something along those lines. RIP Mr.Hobo man. Too weird to live, too rare to die.

For sure my fav. part of Stobe's videos are his dialogue. There's an intelligent wit and humor that may or may not be deliberate , but its my fav. part. I wish the world didn't work out the way it did with him , sounds like he was just about ready to put his rail hat in the closet. Its a tough life. A lot tougher than he lets on in his videos. I do believe he found what he was looking for which is a million people appreciating and validating his life and art. Too bad he didn't get to see the true impact he has made. Much like artists of the past , their death somehow becomes a catalyst for their adoration. His popularity exponentially increased after his death. Now he is a legend. At least his parrents can rest a little easier knowing he made many peoples lives a bit better though his videos. In the darkest hours of the night he will be remembered most. RIP.

Stobe..a true American...whose videos have shown me places in the States..small town USA.. towns with history and beer stores & chicken..even in the darkest hours of the night...Made a video about my hometown Vancouver..BC and Canada...RIP Stobe.

You the man stobe! you lived the dream and had the balls to do it! As i sit here at work living someones else dream! R.I.P
There was a time
When lonely men would wander
Through this land
Rolling aimlessly along
So many times
I've heard of their sad story
Written in the words
Of dead men's songs
Down through the years
Many men have yearned
For freedom
Some found it
Only on the open road
So many tears of blood
Have fell around us
'Cause you can't always do what you are told.
Please tell me where
Have all the hobos gone to
I see no fire burning down
By the rusty railroad track
Could it be that time
Has gone and left them
Tied up in life's eternal traveling sack.
Last Sunday night
I wrote a letter
To my loved one
I signed my name
And knew I'd stayed away
Too long
There was a time
When my heart was free to wander
And I remember as I sing
This hobo song
-John Prine
When I was 29 years old, I was working 50 hour weeks in an accounting firm pushing a pencil around a ledger. We didn't have computers back then. It was a slow death.
I wanted to congratulate him on his great adventure, but then I saw the comments. So sad. Rest in peace, Stobe!
Stobe left us in the darkest hour of the night.
a s in Baltimore or all places 🥺
Stobe... the darkest hours of the night was his best time, I think he did a lot of pontification, soul searching and drinking a working mans brew and liquor... only to move on... god bless him, I think I could have truly called him a friend
What happend? Suddenly dieid? Sick? accident?
@@dond3r183 God called Stobe before his time to his heavenly tracks. He's having now a good time up there with Casey Jones,Jawn Henry,Jesse James,Kate Shelly and plenty of his Hobo Friends. No Goddamn Bulls givin' him trouble no more.

Loved his piano repertoire. RIP Stobe. When I rode Amtrak last week in DC. I thought of him. It was very sad seeing those freights passing by. Not knowing he was not on one.
So you did know he was on one?
When you say "his repertoire", do you mean he plays the piano for the video or his choice of songs for the video? Im new to Stobe and would love to know whether he played piano or not. RIP Stobe either way
@@mmatthews61687 the piano music was his own, yes. He played it himself
@@tehgerbil Wow. I was wondering about this. Talented indeed.
@@TaylerSpliff a real old-school artist... Broke in his time, died too young. Maybe one day these videos will be noticed for what they are. An ode to a way of life that was dying, lovingly documented, warts and all. Freedom's last gasp.
I think Stobe disliked this reality. He seemed full of love. There's a genuine confusion portrayed in his action and his words. Deep inside he longed, a deep longing to be free both physically and mentaly. I hope he succeeded in overcoming his own personal challenges. I guess we're all searching for something. RIP bro
Let’s admit it; he was a drunk a slush that could tap out a tune.
I found Stobe a month ago and watched everything on his channel. Then I find these gems! RIP Jim Stobe
Thank you for showing me my country from a different perspective and may your soul rest in peace with loads of reasonably priced beer and plenty of trains on golden tracks
As a Canadian I must say it was an unique way to see some of this great country
Si así es,la única manera de ver a canada desde un tren en movimiento. Aparte si el gobierno hiciera tours en tren de esta misma manera ,cobraría mucho dinero ,por eso hay que hacerlo al estilo " STOBE , RIP"👍👍👍
Between the beautiful scenery, the amazing piano and the fact that I know he died doing this actually made me tear up. What a gem.
Worth every second to watch the full one hour and twenty two minute video.
RIP man. I still can't believe that he went back and found that passport!! What are the odds?
Seriously !
What are the odds that I'm reading your post just as he finds it?
@@Darryl603 Because if you can't jump off a freight train moving at full speed at EXACTLY the spot you remember dropping your passport, then what sort of wuss are you?
Still can't figure out how he remembered the exact spot he jumped off that train??WTF!!!
This is one of Stobies videos that ranks high on my favoriites list and I am downloading it for the memories because who knows how long before the channel disappears. I miss you Stobie Ben Kenobie.

@@bergydermeister5616 I was just thinking the channel might disappear eventually since he is deceased, glad to know it wont because I really enjoyed his videos and when he died I was genuinely down for awhile. To this day I still feel the way he died is suspicious. Lets just be civil.
Dam you Stobe... you came into my life 4 years ago when I was just caught out living in my car up and down the coast spending the nights many along the train tracks and was enthralled every minute watching you while hooched up in the dark and now I feel more alone than I've ever been.
The film is in the can, your memory in all our hearts and a legacy to live forever. Thank you
They call me Hobo_Yoda
And I had been pushing for piano recital videos for years but now the music so sweet sounds so much sadder
Merry Christmas Mr.Yoda

Thank you and bless you. The saddness never leaves, esp when I think of his dear sweet mother who met him at the station once and said into the camera...
We're so proud to have a hobo in the family.
She so truly loved her son
My heart is aching.
You'll be happy to know I finally got housing and am no longer homeless but still occasionally I spend the night in my car parked down by one of my old spots and drift off under blankets waiting for the loaded Branford Gravel train to roll through.
Will it be 28 cars or 62 or maybe I'll get lucky and a 132 will roll thru.
Or once beach season is over and the parking lots are open, I go to the beach, park in the back in the dark corner, check out the stars and planets in the night sky then to sleep til the glorious sunrise.
Or if the cops don't razz me I tuck in at the open space next to to tidal marsh, lastly was a deeply frozen winter night.
Pink fingers of sky
- slashes across the gunmetal.
Dawn
on this ragged coast
wears a mantle
Old Snow
Heavy Cold
Silent Sound.
Ice sheets the tidal creek -
Ducks and Geese
nestle the night
in broken pools
Yet,
in unbroken sleep
In still life
Weigh anchor amongst the floes
Drifting in
On filling tide

Hell ya happy you messaged back hope you have a great day man!!

I enjoy his narration and the way he explains things.
I’m another viewer that started to watch after he had passed. I really do enjoy watching his videos and will continue to enjoy the ones I haven’t seen yet.
That fish looked like it died about a week before he pulled it from the water!! lmao!
I read your comment, got to that part an laughed my ass off too 😂 #ripstobe
Just discovered Stobe’s videos and was gutted to learn of his passing, but the legend lives on! Rest in power, king!
March 2024, watching Stobies uploads again is like catching up with an old friend you haven't seen in a while. This world is a little sadder for not having you in it. Rest easy Stobie.
Still here Stobe in spirit 2024 🚂🚃🚃🚃 🍻 . Till the darkest hours my friend😔. See you at the big catchout in the sky 😎
It’s wild how all of this can look like such a thrill and such a drag at the same time. It appears to take a certain sort of person or a certain place in a life to do and my hat is off to Stobe and Wingman for showing all of this to us. RIP HobeStobe.
Yeah man, Stobe lived more on a single trip than most of us in a lifetime. Bless his Hobo heart. RIP you crazy guy.
Funny thing is when I watch this man's travels, I seem to follow him everywhere. I also noticed that although he may be gone, he will remain ageless to the masses.
Wherever you are, Stobe, if you're alone, don't forget the impact you've had on the world and thank you for it.
Miss you, Stobe. You were one of the thousand points of light. RIP

The fact he was able to find his passport was a miracle

Heard that song so many times on need for speed on ps2 way back in the day such a classic
I enjoyed The Highwaymen more than any but that song holds a special part of my soul.
His cover of Highwayman is incredible. Perhaps Stobe is now a single drop of rain. And he’ll be back again and again too
Not likely
His musical arrangements in this one very special- he really was a very good musician.. thanks for posting this vid!
Stobe & piano = excellent musical skills. Can listen easily a long time! TY Stobe rip
45:20 LOL! I'm an electrical engineer working on a railroad. I was always told that our green/yellow vests were for "managers and engineers" while the orange ones were for "others in the yard." Glad I know the real reason now LOL! By the way, I'm 5 years in on the railroad as an electrical engineer and still wearing a yellow/green vest!
I just found this channel like 3 hours ago. It was in my suggested videos. I genuinely didn’t think I’d like this at all but gave it a shot. And if I’m not being too rash its probably one of my new favorite things to watch. May your soul rest easy on the eternal ride of the beyond good sir. Hopefully the tax rate for liquor up there isn’t too high.
I'm from Toronto, born and raised! :) Absolutely loved watching this video, it actually made me want to explore more of this kooky, large, vast and beautiful country. (And I'm not even joking.) In honour of your inspirational life that flew-by faster than a train in the Prairies, I think I just might. However, I'm getting a ticket and doing it on the Via Rail; I'm not as brave as you are. Thank-you so much for making and posting it!
I love his adventures. He could have stopped in any town and jambed on piano $200.00 a night minimum. Hooked up with a floozie, banked and chilled on every trip. Very talented guy. Definitely could rock that keyboard!
RIP.
Somebody needs to tell the story behind the stobe. I’d love to see a feature length documentary. He resonates with so many on such a deep level
I live in Winnipeg, close to the CP main line. So much of this footage is familiar. Stobe actually passed about 500 metres or 1/3 mile from my house, If I had known, I would have gone to pick him up, brought him back for a home cooked meal, a shower, laundry, refill all his essential supplies, a few free six packs and a warm place to lay his head for the night. RIP James Stobie.
