HERE IS THE TRANSCRIPT INTERVIEW FROM MAHIRO MAEDA. THE DIRECTOR OF THE 2ND RENAISSANCE. THIS SHOULD ANSWER MOST OF YOUR EVER-BURNING QUESTIONS LOL.
1 In the first half, humans treated robots like objects.
2 I guess thats only to be expected, but that was the concept.
3 And in this later half, that is reversed, and the robots treat humans like objects.
4 A sort of anti-humanism is expressed here.
5 Those are the themes that we thought out.
6 The real revenge of the robots who have been taken advantage of starts.
7 It was the humans who attacked first, but the robots, whose home, Zero-One, was destroyed, are beginning their attacks.
8 This image was taken from a street corner in Eastern Europe, and it shows that the machines towns have advanced and grown this far.
9 Here, as it shows, there is a military operation called Dark Storm.
10 Why did the world become what is called the Matrix?
11 Its because humans initiated a suicidal plan and destroyed the sky.
12 And, this is the final battle.
13 This battle has a mythical element to me as if the sun were setting on humankind, and this is mankinds last battle.
14 Rather than just being a war film, its more like a battle of the gods.
15 Gods and Titans. God and Satan. Like those types of legends, there is an apocalyptic sense, and a sense of the Book of Revelations.
16 And people of all ethnicities and cultures come together to offer their final prayers before heading off to battle.
17 And, these planes flying here, if you look closely, they are the machines invented by the robots.
18 They fly using the hovercraft engines.
19 And, the bombs being dropped are not normal bombs, but house micro-machines, or nano-machines, and they will destroy the sky and bring darkness upon the world.
20 And, they will be distributed, on a large scale, all over the world blocking the sun in order to shut off the robots power source.
21 And, they plan to dismantle the robots while they are inoperative.
22 That was Operation Dark Storm.
23 Up to that point, the images are still realistic.
24 From here on, were in the dark due to Operation Dark Storm, and we created a mythical and hell-like landscape.
25 The enemies are machines. The advanced machine equipment the humans used, they become useless as well because they are all machines.
26 And, humans begin to act recklessly as if they were sent back to the primitive age.
27 Their only choice is to confront the robots with violence.
28 These cruel scenes continue for a while.
29 Depending on how you look at it, they are only destroying objects so it might be hard to call it a violent scene.
30 This scene displays that sort of irony as well.
31 This here depicts views from the periscopes on the tanks and powered suits.
32 And, the powered suits use nuclear weapons and neutron bombs and they plan to burn the enemys micro-chips to destroy them, but it doesnt quite work.
    33 Scenes like this too.
34 Basically, powered suits and the machines are drawn in 3-D CGI
35 Oh, this is 2-D. This was drawn by hand.
36 But this is a combination.
37 Using them in combination was pretty difficult.
38 I just hope it worked well.
    39 These scenes too.
40 In the script, we wrote this scene to be like peeling the shell off a lobster.
41 A powered suit being peeled off like the shell of a lobster.
42 That was one of the more difficult scenes.
43 Basically, all of these images here are a collection of images gathered by informational CCD cameras worn by the soldiers.
44 Oh, but these images, this is a pure image.
45 We tried inserting images here and there in hopes to convey the sadness and devastation of the humans who have been trampled on by the machines and their inhumanness.
46 Humans can also be considered machines.
47 The machines created a plague with an unknown virus, a virus designed to kill humans one by one.
48 And, the machines who lost their power source because of Operation Dark Storm begin to try and extract energy from the body of humans.
49 And, they stop killing humans, but rather try to keep them alive, albeit in great pain.
50 And, they extract the electric currents that flow within the nervous system and use humans as an element of power generation.
51 And, a very disturbing vision unfolds.
52 And later on, there is the place where Neo awakes in The Matrix.
53 Hes connected to a huge human generator, so we designed this accordingly.
54 We tried to convey the mass deaths that occurred in the 20th century, and it is our hope that you will be disgusted by it.
55 And here, the machine ambassadors reappear
56 but they have already quit imitating humans.
57 In Part A, they were imitating human appearances out of respect for humans, but they no longer recognize the worthiness of humans.
    58 They stopped being human-like.
59 Rather, they take on an appearance unique to machines.
60 They changed into an insect-like, grotesque appearance.
61 It can be said that they evolved.
62 With the self-destruction of the machine, the UN building and Manhattan are blown away.
63 This was also a very hard scene to watch.
64 The storyboard for this scene was completed last year before September 11th.
65 And with that event, I thought that we wouldnt be able to create this scene.
66 Well, but there was no order to cut the scene. So, we went ahead and created it and put it in.
67 I was still worried that it might get a bad review from viewers, but it was a scene I didnt want to cut because of its importance to the films message and story.
68 And so humans, like this by closing their hearts with civilization retreating back into its shell everything becomes extinct.
69 Extinct might not be the right word but all mankind becomes connected and wired to this matrix, and they live within a collective dream.
70 This kind of demonic world is waiting.
71 But, we dont really know if that world is truly scary.
72 Is it scarier to see the reality of Earth utterly destroyed, or is it just better to continue living in a peaceful dream?
73 It wasnt the goal of this project to try and answer that question, but it would be great if this question is brought to mind by watching this.
A transcript of director, Mahiro Maeda's Commentary for the Animatrix's short film, The Second Renaissance Part 1. The Animatrix's The Second Renaissance Part 1 is written and directed by Mahiro Maeda. Story by Lana and Lilly Wachowski.

3:55 this is one of the scariest scenes for me,
the first generation power plant, according to the creators this was a floating platform that roamed the "desert of the real" , collected survivors and forcing men, women and children into electrochemical slavery as a means of producing electricity. Hard to imagine a more terrifying existence than to be torn away from your family and everyone you ever knew, physically installed side by side with people you dont know, and yet.. you are all brothers and sisters, flesh and blood comrades doomed to suffer the same fate.. an existence worse than hell itself, those who are the first to starve to death are liquified into _soylent green_ macronutrient smoothies that are forcefed to emaciated survivors for life support. People want to leave the suffering of this world behind, but they are physically restrained from being able to commit suicide.
5:27 is also equally terrifying .. the machines do not let anyone die, they keep everyone alive against their will and perform cruel lab-rat experiments on the central nervous system, bio electrical body processes to study people's anatomical makeup.. at this point the machines understand us humans better than we ever understood ourselves. as people we are limited by ethics and our commitment to medical morals.. something the machines dont care for. They perform vivisections and terrible, yet groundbreaking experiments on living human beings. tinkering with our bodies, poking and prodding, electrochemically stimulating conscious human brains, testing our limits and taking care not to kill the subject.. and yet if one dies, there are billions more to cut open and experiment on
6:00 At this point, human beings have lost all fundamental rights and free-will. The only freedom the machines have gifted us is the ability to turn one's head left and right to perceive a reality which would have been unimaginable only a few years earlier. People even lack the freedom to self-terminate. Wilful Suicide is a luxury that even the richest man on earth can no longer afford... All of human history has come down to this moment. Human creativity, love, passion, excitement, struggles, our trials and tribulations.. all of that has gone out the window.
The seemingly limitless potential of humanity's physical strengths, beauty and imagination, has been discarded. A person's value is now limited to the electrochemical energy potential found within his or her mitochondrial cells on a microscopic level.

It also produces a massive pressure and shock wave that rips apart anything in the radius, not to mention an EMP that destroys electronics. The fact that many people are so interested in this Anime is because it subconsciously symbolizes the Biblical Narrative. If you watch it too many times you will recognize that some of the scenes here was depicted biblically.
    - The Robotic Apocalypse Horseman’s horse has serpent like tail
    - The shroud of darkness is one of the vials of God’s wrath against the Antichrist
    - The surface world turning into blood red is also one of the vials of wrath
It makes me wonder this anime thought it’s audience to believe in God. After all, mahiro maeda visualize this as a final showdown between good and evil.

Dark Storm would have turned the world into a barren frozen waste land that would have killed all the humans; assuming that the constant use of nukes have not done that already. Also is it not odd that the humans did not just create EMP weapons and just blanket 01 with it first instead of just nuking the world or using Dark Storm? Another thing was the Human's ability to adapt and create new weapons and technology so slow that they could not keep up with the machines?

It was pointed out in Part 1 that with the creation of AI and machines doing everything for them, these humans grew decadent and complacent; essentially critically lazy and short-sighted. That was shown with the very concept of Operation Dark Storm, a plan that any scientist worth their salt would have said “No” to. The only excuse for Dark Storm was if it was reasoned that once the Machines were defeated, then Dark Storm would be undone. Of course (somehow) they didn’t plan on the Machines advancing faster than Humans, and underestimated how long the war could be dragged out.
The result? Most of those responsible for Dark Storm likely died during the war, and their knowledge was lost. The Machines won, and Humans (and the Earth, most of all) lost badly.

I think humans will still lose. Because I read in the Matrix Comic ''Goliath''. The machines have what they call ''Overdrive'' Mode. The machines only took 26 minutes to build an advanced space assault vehicle to kill the alien form that attacks the machine city. This spacecraft is so powerful that the machines decided that the craft with it's Human operator were forbidden to come back to earth for fear of it being used against them by Zion.
This Overdrive ability is what defeated the humans in the war. If the humans come up with something, the machines in mere seconds have already an effective solution for it. Not just one solution but hundreds of solution!

The harm to us is long-term but the harm to machines is instant.

1)in the real world we would probably give them rights once they achieved intelligence
2)in the real world we wouldn't give them self awareness in the first place
3)in the real world companies who produce them would 100% have several emergency backdoors even just to avoid the product getting stolen or hacked
4)we would NEVER blot out the sun
    5) we wouldn't let the machines alone after the first genocide, we'd finish them all off immediately
6)we wouldn't lose the actual war, the machines would be eradicated before any soldier on either side even engaged.

    8)we wouldn't have a public trial for a machine

    • @kai-jf2vd
      @kai-jf2vd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

Valid points, but that in itself is also nothing more than assumptions. We tend to overestimate ourselves in our ability, regarding your point on machines with backdoor in case a product gets compromised even in real world scenario the most sophisticated security in the world can be hacked, no code is perfect. To even cover the topic of machine intelligence is tricky and many high profile individuals have mostly give a mutual response that it's better for us to not pursue it but the very idea of machine learning is a self-learning AI, your initial code may have not provided initial function to achieve any world threatening event however once they achieve some sentience through wild coincidence as it improves itself, by the time they start to improve themselves rapidly beyond human intelligence it's hard for us gauge the intelligence of a machine until it's too late. Current AI may not be as impressive but many researches has dabble on letting AI roam the internet OpenAI GPT3 being the latest of its kind, despite it being a relatively new AI what it can do is really impressive.
Also blocking out the sun, crazy as it seems has been suggested as a way to fight (lets not kid ourselves it's just a way temporarily halt the progress) against global warming through stratospheric aerosol injection. It's not as intense as the one used in animatrix but it's of similar concept (to be honest if the sun was actually blot out in similar fashion shown in the animation we would have an eternal frozen hell hole and the machine would gave won regardless as every biological lifeform dies).
Also, didn't the machine gain rights in the animation after the initial uprising and they establish their first city 01 after getting banished (this part is probably the less likely scenario to ever happen IRL, I can't imagine us letting the machine go out unregulated and unobserved so within a real life situation if the machines were never given the chance to establish themselves we could have a chance at eradicating them before they become an actual threat towards humanity). Due to the city being to prosperous many world power view them in envy and initiate a "trade war" against them before it escalate to a full blown war. (7) despite america various effort to stiffle China economy it's still the fastest growing economy, we tend to have no control over the hand of the free market (unless you're the upper 1% I suppose)
I agree that the depiction of the "anime" is a grossly exaggerated view of the future, but the points presented do hold some basis towards reality up to the extent of our understanding on general AI and its consequences.
If 2020 has taught me anything people love to overestimate themselves and do some of the most stupid and irrational shit for quick burst of self-gratification.

The original music especially for the battle scenes was all kind of rock style and action during the fight scene, and didn't really do a good job symbolizing, "the sins by man and machine," while your version shows the honor and of those fighting like a real WW2 documentary or something and the hopelessness of the human race, fighting at the mercy of the machines

Thing is, I don't think the war would last that long. Even in a fight for survival, no nation can withstand more than a couple decades of war. And here, it took 150 years to defeat the US, and over 200 to finally get humanity to surrender. If machines ever progressed to the point of open war on humans. The war would be decided in a matter of months. Either with us nuking them into oblivion or them over running us with endless waves of ever improving troops, adapting new defenses faster than we can devise ways to beat their existing flaws. It took the best minds in America 4 years to design and produce a nuke. It would take a machine with no prior knowledge of nuclear weapons a matter of minutes to design a prototype.

The dates in this video are incorrect the trail of the first machine murder was 2090 in the timeline. It's likely that the war ended in 2199 and the nebbicansa in the matrix was made in 2159 I believe. Assuming that the humans nuked 01 in 2160 that would be 49 years. Which is more likely timeframe. Additionally I suspect that the Americans hadn't actually fallen to the machines, 2199 is when the humans surrendered. Dark storm was a completely stupid thing to do. Yes the night slowed the machines for a few years at most but by then the humans would have been straving to death. The idea that they didn't include a kill code or way to remove the ninites after deployment is moronic. However the humans in this period are shown to very stupid.

With the sole exception of 2 seconds in the Animatrix where the machines are seen to be using chemical warfare to mass exterminate the humans, every other point in the film the machines are seen to be saving human lives - horrifically granted but saving them all the same. I don't believe the writers really thought through what that one shot meant, but it doesn't really brake the narrative.
When the humans are fighting in their walkers, the machines rip them out and use them in there harvesters for power. Then there is the massive medical seen with all the injured people - that means the machines let them live?

Since it was a dream they(human) can manipulate unscious reality to fight the sleeping machine. If the sleeping die in its dream, it also die in reality. That's why the machine are finding the source of the problem before its too late for them!

Every time I come across a video related to the Matrix film series, whether it is in the form of critical analyses or comprehensive documentaries, I come upon a range of opinions in the comments section that I find profoundly interesting, prompting prolonged and contemplative reflection. It would be extremely beneficial for someone with the vast experience built up by the Wachowski brothers to carry on with the intricate plots of Matrix. What we have here is a phenomenon that, in my opinion, should be taken advantage of to the fullest, especially in terms of showing us, in detail, what the early versions of the Matrix were like. A notable example of this is the ideal version brought up by the Architect during his encounter with Neo: a world he considered his first creation, the paradise, but which most humans connected to the simulation found too perfect to be real, unfortunately leading to its rejection.
The possibility of new film instalments that clear up points left ambiguous in previous releases springs to mind. I am convinced that this film series contains a narrative with immense potential, but it is imperative that it is looked after with care, preserving the original essence that characterises the Matrix films. I hope, and I reiterate emphatically, that someone will focus on quality over quantity in future productions of this series.

I saw a comment suggesting a TV show seemingly unrelated to the Matrix franchise. It would be something dramatic but seemingly non-scifi-ish going to its climax when suddenly the MC _wakes up_
I believe something like that was done in Mr.Robot. Can you imagine, say, police or detective drama well acclaimed on its own dropping small - perfectly explained by, say, psychology - bits of _truth_
Without a group of rebels feeding viewers all information, no, it'd be an experience to wake up in the real world not realising what actually happened (because - no context) and going _back_ to the Matrix. Getting back into the main plot only trying to understand what happened, like any average person would. Perhaps, going to a terapy or visiting buddhist monk. Like, two main plots happening simultaneously
