I would like to point element absorption also makes a difference. Pyro shields is too fragile for Hydro sticks Childe shoots. It would have been better to use the local frog volunteer for fair Absorption rate. Still, good to know Thoma is a niche shielder.

Interesting, So Dionas average shield is actually good cause of her low cooldown & paired with a sacrificial bow makes her a really good shielder i'd assume.
Indeed it does. I run her with an R5 sac now and Ayaka, so not only do I have a great shield, I also have a cryo battery for my Ayaka. I basically have her burst on CD, feelsgoodman
Diona is like the Ultimate Cryo Support. She Heals, Shields, Battery, and Buffs (her Burst gives bonus EM at C6, her shield gives Stamina use reduction too)
If you have a Cryo DPS, you won't go wrong with building the frosty cat

I believe with proper rotations Thoma's shield is actually 100% uptime I'm not sure if it's supported by his constellations though maybe c1 but idk
@@azurisage I just tested it and it's actually doable. Given, I use tons of ER to always get my burst up. Also, my artifacts for Thoma is pretty meh (I use Noblesse because I use EoSF for my Xingqiu).
The party is a standard Hu Tao, Xingqiu, Sucrose, Thoma. Works pretty good imo, but I haven't tried it on abyss.
@McDonald's employee zhongli I have to disagree - Sacrificial Spear probably wouldn't normally even be used on anyone but Thoma and maybe Rosaria, and it wouldn't be more broken than any other Sacrificial weapon. Putting sac spear instead of something that does more damage on Xiao would be sub optimal, and people who get the Xiao C1 are probably not the type of people who would use a suboptimal weapon on him. Zhongli already has 100% shield uptime since his skill cooldown is over before his shield is over, it wouldn't affect him at all.
Plenty of other characters have constellations that allow them to use their skill multiple times, and sacrificial weapons don't break that. Eg, nobody says Ningguang should use sacrificial fragments before c2 because it's not optimal and she should just use a better weapon.

I'm starting to think xinyan would be better if she didn't had a shield at all
We literally have to protect something that the sole purpose is to protect us
2k def, tenacity and sac sword makes her a good shield bot for many teams and if you can get good crit damage stats(over 100 at least) with C2 she doubles as a decent sub DPS/attack booster but yeah she's still a mess.
xinyan shield is garbage
xinyan came out at a time when most of the playerbase was struggling on floor 11 that was filled with pyro units, she had a time and place, however the issue with her arrival being not release, but a bit after release is people already committed to their characters and couldn't really spare the resources to invest into a pyro shielder to get thru floor 11 because if you couldn't get through floor 11 with raw damage you wouldn't meet the floor 12 dps check anyway so it was much better to just keep pumping your carry/key supports.
the philosophy of their shields is ignored when it comes to zhongli but all other shields are breakable if not applied to their respective element. this is why we have corrosion like mechanics now.... mihoyo has a very interesting way of designing their games.
they don't nerf characters, they just design new enemies to take a shit on you; this is why 2.0 inazuma enemies were a pain in the prostate; they were designed to fuck morgana/freeze/ganyu teams over hardcore with not being able to be sucked in, immune to freeze, and jumping all over.
the corrosion mechanic is a two in one, zhongli shield does nothing and healers will need to be taken at some point when the wolf enemies are put into abyss if you can't kill them incredibly fast.

@@richardjones8846 you're right that the design philosophy is interesting but sometimes it's still obnoxious like the specters (clearly there to promote Yoi).
However I do think that the Rifthounds are actually pretty well design. There corrosion status is weak only going up to 75 per tick, so it's not a problem on itself it only becomes one when it keeps on stacking, this mechanic doesn't necessarily punish shielders but braindead players who face tank everything in their path without a shred of skills or stationary character who can't move often and is forced to reposition themselves against them like Ganyu.
All in all, team that use healers won't have a problem and team that do not like Hu Tao are too mobile and in constant i-frame that it doesn't matter especially when they actually can get staggered both the whelp and big ones(unless you play Hu Tao like a face tank putting no skill).
They're also telegraphed (like PMA) as hell, you can easily predict they're next movement further suggesting to you to dodge instead of face tanking.
Every time I think about them, I realize they're design unlike Kairagi, Specters, ruins etc... Aren't there to block a character (like Venti), they here to stop you from playing recklessly without any thought and that's even when you don't have healers.
Only egregious think about them is their elemental resistance and hp bar. Char that use ZL or VV set will take the lead over other option. Or just Eula(Xingqiu too, I guess).
Still, I wonder how Mihoyo would make people using Bennett play less recklessly too?
I was forced to lvl up Xinyan when floor 9 and 10 were all Cryo enemies. Now, I still regret the exp books I gave her.
This is very interesting and somehow near accurate way to see how shielders work.
But honestly it's sad that in the video, Noelle performed very well as a shielder but still can't be recommended as a reliable shielder just because of the uptime.
Her shield is tailer make for herself only.
Hence why she have the shield reducing cool down with her second passive.
She's a jack of all trades master of none. So, its kinda hard to use her. Gorou and albedo might be able to help her become a good dps tho.
I use sacrificial greatsword to cast more often her shield, its not 100% uptime but is very good, especially if you have some refines...
Noelle has access to Sacrificial weapon. Her problem however is that she doesn't create energy particles with her E skill, she doesn't buff your team, and geo resonance is less used/useful than cryo or pyro resonance. So, there are at least 3 better shielders: Zhongli, Diona, Thoma. That's why in the end game there's no room for Noelle in your abyss teams.
She also heals the whole team consistently when her E and Q are up. Technically she overheals the whole team as if all three teammates were on death's door, they'd be fully healed before her Q runs out
Noelle's burst generates a lot of crystallization particles, and it is one of the rare bursts that doesn't turn itself off when you swap. In quickswap teams or even just in panic situations with elemental applications, Noelle can generate new shields for everyone long after her own shield pops. I would definitely move her up a few notches when taking practical gameplay into account. Her uptime is pretty good with a geo battery like Ningguang.
Csytalization is shit in damage absorption if you don’t have any EM which noelle likely won’t have. She’s placed exactly where she’s meant to be.
@@TerraTheWise You don't need to worry about keeping the Crystalization shields up for very long when you proc those gems every couple of swings (which, in turn, should be healing your entire party for thousands of HP per swing), especially if you don't pick them up immediately, and *especially* if you're just keeping it up between Noelle's shield cooldowns.
The beauty of the Noelle Burst you can quick swap then once swap back to Noelle the burst still active. Noelle is very good against corrosion, I paired her with Hu Tao to give her an emergency shield, And used the burst to heal the other character when need at the same time give a lot of damage to the enemy specially if there a lot of enemy. To think Noelle burst DPS is better over Diluc Burst DPS in total

Noelle is more of a damage-dealer shielder rather than support shielder, so using her shield to protect others kinda wastes healing potential and uptime (cooldown decreases by 1 second if u hit enemies 4 times as Noelle)
Well, ya if you want to go all out for her, she's better as a damage-dealer because of her 2nd talents. her burst also want her to stay on field too.
She's only good as dmg dealer shielder when she is C6 otherwise u would only want to use her burst if you need more healing
@@rainitaouwu Sadly true, I have her built pretty well at the moment with high talent levels but so much of her damage comes from C6 that it's not enough. Hoping she comes on one of the future banners, I'd pull anyone for Noelle cons :(
noelle is a good support shielder for hutao only, thanks to her 1st ascension passive which every 60 secs, when hutao procs her E will got that 400% def shield, so if u take attention of her cooldown, u can get her shield everytime.
and with the new artifact which 2-set provide 30% def, she could use a sacrifical claymore (no need to lvl it up) to spam more shield, i mean when noelle procs her shield she deals dmg too...
My shield explosion damage deal more than my noelle normal damage(as in one hit). Also, if you had really high attack after using burst and shield, the damage is great and the crit damage makes it more painful.
Noelle shield is kinda made most effective on herself. Meaning it is at maximum strength when she is using it and she can reduce the CD on her shield herself. I bet if she was the one tanking Dvalin breath then her shield would still be standing.
Agreed completely! Especially is she's rocking a 4pc Retracing Bolide set for beefier shields (and dmg). It's fun to see all of the shields in this video, but the testing methods and/or builds are far from optimal

On the other hand where if am using a team where Noelle is the dps and have the most field time her shield shines better. Having a shield thats effective on herself is a bad shielder

It's benefits the most on themselves and not others, because it was make to accommodate with the high Def they got making the shield overall tougher to break.
Different shield have different useable, cause if you need a shield Support use the others Shield Support if you want a shield DPS use a shield DPS which is Noelle and Xinyan.
@@aritramukherjee6819 If you're using the bolide set on Noelle it means you're most likely using her as a dps/sub dps not a support. The bolide set effect only affects the person wearing it. A support noelle would have defenders will and a 2 piece maiden. (Or in the future a 2 piece with Itto's set for a 60% defense boost)

By this point, what I want from a shielder is the longest duration of shield they can provide. It doesn't matter to me how strong their damage absorption is if it only lasts for a very short time
So, Zhongli with literally 0 downtime (except for some really hard attacks, or it might be me doing poor timing) would be the best choice for you.
If you use Thoma correctly, with the right timing and enough hp and energy recharge you should be able to have a 100% uptime shield, but it's not super easy
@@onion2190 if you run thoma with Hutao, Xinqui and sucrose. He will never run out of Burst up time since sucrose and xinqui give many particles (even tho diferrent element) + Hu tao and alot of ER and HP to Thoma.

Conclusion: This is why we don't have a sacrificial polearm (even though it would be a great help to thoma's kit)
Sacrificial polearm will just be another buff to our chef god, Xiangling.

I actually really liked Noelle's passive shield. Since I use Hu Tao a lot, she's gonna be below 50% hp anyway. So the passive triggers a lot.(and the second reason, is that I don't have Zhongli)
Edit: people are talking about some stuff at the replies(which I'm too lazy to read all of them) so I'm gonna add more fun facts about Noelle's shields just because why not.
-Her passive shield is actually the stronger than her skill(I think her skill has around 300% ish of def at lv 13, meanwhile her passive with 400% of def and is available at ascension 1). Sure she has a pretty big gap between shield duration and cd, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem with her e skill right?
-Noelle is the only 4* geo shielder in the game(I don't know much about Gorou)in case you forgot, geo shield is more effective to all element
-her passive triggers at 30% hp and if you're using Hu Tao, it's pretty easy to reach this amount(and for hp scaling characters, 30% hp is still a lot of hp)
-if you've played Noelle's hangout, don't tell me you don't want to build her after that...

While I appreciate IWTL for doing this, can we all agree how Mihoyo could have easily make this information easily accessible for everyone simply by providing a shield bar (with numbers in it). It baffles me how they absolutely refuse to provide any bar/circle for shields (and most other buffs).
I’ve seen people actually try to simulate this and there is one main issue. It’s that some shields can stack and they all have different durations and damage limits. It would still be really hard to tell which shield is which if you have like three shields active, all with different cool downs and durability. So while it would be convenient and neat, it would also look very messy

What the 2 posters above said and a million times more. We are in the age of niche supports only good for a few characters. Sara with a 6 sec atk buff to compliment *only* raiden and snapshotters. Thoma, a dedicated shielder, a literally nothing else. Soon to be Gorou as the premium Geo buffer.

IMAGINE THAT. thoma might as well be the last viable 4-star. his shield is the next best after zhongli, out utilized by diona and beidou, but a unique decent shield nonetheless. there will be worse 4 and 5 stars down the road, mihoyo never fails to disapppoint us hard

Noelle’s shield ON Noelle is the real strength. On top of the universal geo absorption, it also factors her own defence into it, as well as cool down reduction on hit.
Diona is the most flexible 4 star shielded for OTHER characters on your team.
Thoma is specifically really nice on Hutao and specific auto attack spammers.
Xinyan’s is a bit sad.
Yanfei’s is nice to protect herself from interruption during charged attack spam.

@McDonald's employee zhongli Depends. If you get her C6 then it is just better to build her as DPS. If you don't have C6, then probably go defenders will (for early game).
Considering that Noelle will be one of the first shielders every person gets, she is definitely worth upgrading until you get more options; shields are very valuable and Noelle's geo shield on her skill and passive combined with her healing can carry you through most fights
When i use barbara to till end game i still use them. I found her healeling suck in the past. But now i use her cause her crazy def can basically masochist through almost any atk and just for meme. Maybe also coop
Oh also got c6 of it that's the main reason i build her. And her shield is pretty decent to protect so no complain by me
Shields arent really super important in anything but abyss imo, and by how its going, the only shield that will remain viable is zhongli's because of the res shred since many enemies can just ignore shields now (and according to some leaks, there will be enemies that gain an extremly strong shield or dmg buffs when they hit a player with a shield and dendro reactions are likely to just entierly ignore shields and attack just deal their full dmg through them)
She's a beast til like AR 20-25, does everything (makes me forget how to dodge too). Mid-game and on she has a problem of not really synergizing with anyone, and generating zero energy. Her biggest problem as a dedicated shielder is her shield uptime... it's good at absorbing damage, but bad at enabling a dps who needs consistent interrupt resist.
i’m an ar56 zhongli haver and i still bring noelle back out every now and again. she was a main stay in my party for a long time.
And she’s the only way you’ll be able to defeat primo geovishap until you get really well built characters or Zhongli.
Zhongli is one of those characters that when you have them, the game changes (another one is Bennett). You no longer need to dodge everything and you can keep dealing damage at times where using heals instead would force you to dodge and spend time healing. I also find it a bit unfortunate that only corrosion makes healing somewhat useful in the game.
Well next patch is the first soft nerf to Bennett with characters scaling with defense and mihoyo seems to be trying to move away from Bennett and this meta in general so he'll be great for older characters but we'll have to see for newer ones
@@JojoDigitalArtist that's because they're geo characters, but pyro characters are still gonna benefit from ATK.
They're not trying to nerf Bennett, they're just trying to make different element Bennett type characters, so Sara for Electro, Bennett for literally everything that scales off of ATK and Gorou for Geo and DEF scaling characters.

Honestly that’s so true (for me anyway). Zhongli was my second five star (I got him on his last rerun) and I got Bennett on the standard banner with the fate I got from Zhongli’s first ascension, and they’ve never left my team since (tho when I get Qiqi I’ll swap Benny out for her on my Xiao team cuz she would be a better healer for him). They’re truly two of the best supports in my eyes and can be used in basically any team (especially Zhongli). So although I missed Xiao’s rerun, I’m glad I got Zhongli cuz he was a blessing to my account :3

Noelle could perform well as a support at C1 if played properly, but she's an even better DPS, the biggest plus for her is her entire kit.
She has the damage, shields, and heals all together, it's an interesting kit for a 4-Star Character.
despite having Zhongli's shield active, it can never withstand Raid Shadow legends.

I've gotten use to stacking Thoma's shield since I go to the Momiji Domain almost everyday ( along the other Domain for Blizzard and Heart of Depth ) and he can protect his team mates really well--it's just timing it right and sometimes I'm just clumsy. 😅

Geodude's Shield literally deletes game mechanics.
Me while fight Azdeha: Dodging through his abilities using Iframes, shielding at the right moments, knowing when to fight back.
My brother with Geodude vs Azdeha: Press e, run up to him and spam attacks and skills.
It was only when the bleeding abyss came out did he realize that Zhongli nerfed him in the long run.

Yes please, I'd definitely be interested in seeing your review of crystalize reaction shields.
I appreciate the work that must have went into this video and do like it a lot, but I feel like you missed one pretty big factor: the elements.
Every shield has its own respective element; Zhongli and Noelle's are geo, Thoma, Yanfei and Xinyan's are pyro, Diona's is cryo, etc. A huge factor is that elemental shields (EXCLUDING Zhongli's because his has high resistance against everything; I don't know much about Noelle's geo shield in this case) are most effective against their own element.
I'd highly recommend using e.g. Diona's shield against cryo enemies because it offers 250% more efficiency. In combat situations, this kind of stuff can save you and really buff your shield.
It's probably hard to showcase everyone's shields against every element, but I thought it was still worth bringing up.
I also find it a bit questionable to put everyone against Childe, since he really is very unpredictable and can only attack with hydro - which in turn puts the pyro shields at a disadvantage since the elements still seem to play a huge role in shielding. (I can't confirm if pyro shields really are weak to hydro or if that exists at all, but from my experience some shields break unusually quickly when faced with certain elements. E.g. I use Diona a lot and hers breaks under pyro very quickly, bla bla, I know nobody is even still reading this, but if you are here is a cookie 🍪 ok bye)

i really like your contents and now with the shield comparison. its very interesting yet educational i really hope you could give us some of your thoughts regarding constellation of 5 star characters. like if it's alright to just let a character have C0 yet can still be viable for example. ganyu, eula and ayaka yes they will be far greater if they are c6 but can they still clear content without constellations and lastly if they'll be needing a constellation to slap hard what would be the earliest powercreep in constellation. a little few only do this and mostly they are small content creator but the problem to that is most of them let their viewer conclude for themselves. idk but i think it would be a great content
You can actually use 3 star recurve bow on diona to get approx 38k ~39k hp if using only single instance of shield
I use it, but I have so many issues with the CD. And my Diona's hp never exceeded 30k :(

@@atriyakoller136 How high leveled is she? For hp and def scaling characters, max potential is only reached if you level 90 them. Diona level 90 with 20 flower and hp sand, goblet, cirlclet alone gives 27.7 k hp. Between tenacity, recurve bow, and substats you can easily break 30k hp. Recurve alone does it (32.2 k hp)
@@atriyakoller136 how? I dont use recurve bow on diona yet my hp on her is 30k. And she's still lvl 80 for me. Maybe try giving her 2pc tenacity + hp for sands, goblet, & circlet
I use all hp artifacts and my flower has 21%hp and feather has 18%hp substat using 2pc tenacity and 2 pc maidens because bolide only works for equipped character
And she is lvl 90 and many people think she has energy problem without sac bow but her constellation returns 15 energy generates ton of particles for herself and whichever second character i use for example ayaka generates a lot of particles too or in morgana venti also helps generating energy though is it worth to build lvl 90 recurve bow when u have already lvl 90msac bow answer is NO since after update sac passive recharge shield hp and also generates a lot of energy not worth because recurve bow only increases hp by 4.5k to 5.5k provided you are already using all hp artifacts and it is diminishing return toomstack too much so build sac bow only i build recurve because zhongli too boring and in azdaha diona can provide shield at c2 so i spam tap shield every 5 sec and surprisingly it is strong enough to survive those hits of fire mind you coop double the damage when your team has double geo and 1 more trick is use tap shield when azdaha about to begin push away atk so that it tanks 2 shots then break then use hold e to survive rest shots shield will break on last geo atk and use hold e on elemental knockback atk it can withstand everything
I like the video but I feel you undervalued Yanfei's shield. She's the only shielder in the game that can run TToDS. Plus the pyro resonance helps out a ton. After that stack as much HP and ER and you are good up time wise.

Not to mention it reduces her shield cooldown. That said, Noelle also has geo resonance.
Shed have to be on field for that and will tank the damage instead of zhongli, Diona's healing was off field. Anyways, Noelle is better off a dps than a support shield
The test was keeping the other character alive. Noelle cannot be on field.

I lucked out with getting a WGS on standard banner recently and put it on my c6 noelle instead of her whiteblind (I know I should stack DEF on her but I wanted to see if WGS outperforms whiteblind). She can clear enemies w ease with her burst. Also her shield shatter (c4) deals immense dmg
Noelle: Too long cooldown (downtime)
Diona: Balanced and tanky
Thoma: Too short shield duration (the opposite of Noelle)

I've been using Noelle since day 1(since I don't have zhongli) at 3000 ish defense...and a tip I can provide for close range combatants is when her shield breaks, it does geo damage with crystallize effect when you are at close range to enemies...u can kinda have it at full uptime with her skill shield and crystallize shield rotations...also with 400% dmg absorption at less health and little heal...she reduces the support slot to 1 by doing everything...

I think that, even with uptime problems, Noelle is still one of the best F2P investments. Diona is excellent, but I only got my first Diona when Noelle was already at lvl80. Bad pulls can skew one’s priorities.

yes but i think it works for all kind of shield. all of the test have geo resonance bonus. (either with mc or albedo l)
It works for any shield not just specifically Geo character shields because it's a stat boost to the character shield strength so any shield that character has including crystalize shields benefit from Geo resonance.

Just in time since I've been wondering why my level 50 Diona with poor gear has tougher shield than level 60 Thoma with decent gear and higher talent levels.
Thoma craves high investment, energy hungry, lacks other utility and honestly even as a shielder he provides more anxiety than protection still maxed him out tho 🤣
he’s kinda more like an anti stagger s9 you will still need a healer if you can’t dodge well
he can refresh shields in a short time unlike other shielders so you barely get staggered, it’s very good for yoi
but then again, if your shields are already too thick and don’t break easily, you won’t need to worry about stagger
but thoma allows easy pyro resonance, some dmg bonus with constellations and a bit of dmg from his a2 and crimson ooyoroi
@@dangerlovesong6932 Yeah. And after watching the video, I finally get why his shield is so fragile. He's a weird shielder that forces you to create a wind-up time to get max shield strength, which explain why his shield goes down faster if hit preemptively.
I would rather use Diona if my purpose is to survive, Thoma if I need the resonance and Pyro application.

@@dangerlovesong6932 honestly Thoma is the best 4* shielder, building full life and high ER isn't hard, authough he works with any character that does normal attacks, parrying him with Pyro DPS is the best way to go, I find more use for Thoma in my Hutao and Diluc team than Diona, the thing that makes his shield better is the refresh and stack, if you do it right which isn't harder, he protects a lot, my Diona with lv 8 talent and 25k health loses her shield as fast as she gets on Abyss, but Thoma on the other hand with 29k and same lv talents can tank even the Maguu Kenki explosion, stronger than his shield just Zhongli's, if Thoma was Geo he could compete with Zhongli, he would lose but would get close to the same level
I’m still struggling to understand Thoma’s shield… at 9:20 why was Zhongli taking damage if the shield was being refreshed at that time?
It is because the newly refreshed shield tank abit of damage and was destroyed, hence you see 1664 damage taken as compared to if there was no shield, taking 3064 damage.
notice how he was taking less dmg (1664) than without a shield (3026)? yeah, he refreshed the shield and it broke immediately

This pretty much aligns with how I prioritized building my shielders. Zhongli was my #1 reliable shielder until corrosion was introduced and then Diona quickly took his place. The value of shield + heal cannot be overstated. I intend to properly build Noelle if and when I ever get her to C6 also. Thoma's cool as a character but there's something very dull about a shield bot who doesn't offer much of anything else, and he's not really even the most reliable for what he does. I really wish they would have given him a little something extra, but they shorted him big time. Limited DPS potential, robbed of base HP, long internal CD, overly complex mechanic, and no other utility. I realize they don't want to make another broken 4-star character, but he's kinda broken in another sense. I much prefer more versatile multi-taskers that aren't the best at any one thing than characters that are marginally better at one thing in very specific comps. As much as I want to, I just can't justify spending hard earned resources on niche characters. I'd sure love to have a 5th spot on my team to make use of all these cool characters!

@@alex17772 have you tried a shield support noelle? Or have you even tried to use noelle at all? She has ridiculously long cd if you use her only for a shield. Well she does have a strong shield but again her downtime is what makes her shield unreliable
Instead you can maximize noelle's potential by making her as your main dps (shield cd reduces every 4 hit), thus the term "good"
Well obviously im not saying noelle is a good dps compared to the likes of hutao, eula, or even keqing, but her strength comes from her sustainability, not high damage, she's basically immortal on the battlefield
But at the end of the day you can just play the game how you want to, if you wanna build a shielder noelle then go for it
This was quite informative and entertaining. Have you considered a building a DPS Noelle. Looking at her passives and talents she requires on-field time and when well built her damage is far from Negligible. The way i see it, Noelle is like the Shogun, in that she's a great Dps who can Support her supports. Overall she's built for face-tanking and bullying enemies. It's Great
Iwtl, you can use recurve bow on diona for more hp.
and Kamuijima Cannons in inazuma is also a good shield test site.
a second cast with sacrificial is better than the extra hp.
If there is a sacrificial spear, im pretty sure he could reach xingqiu level of support

When Stormbreaker is used: Creates a shield that absorbs up to 16% of Beidou Max HP for 15s. This shield absorbs Electro DMG 250% more effectively

My Thoma has a weak shield even though he's c6. Ive noticed that his base hp is practically garbage and his scaling isnt very impressive and you need to build up the shield. Which doesn't mean much if it breaks before you get to build it up. Try maxing hp stat, you can't keep his ult up. Try maxing his ER stat, you get a weak shield. I could add a couple thousand hp to give his shield that few percent boost in strength but I don't think it matters seeing just how quickly they break. Which is pathetic, considering he's a pure shielder whose only other utility is pyro proc (Bennett, Xiangling could handle that + deal nice dps).
My c1 thoma is 41k hp with 180+% er. Still enough to shield fl12 team without healer though
the unique thing about thomas shield is that stacking mechanic. having high er is the key to keeping his shield alive cause the stacking from his burst is where he gets his tankiness. My 30k hp, 175% er thoma can easily tank a lot of stuff in the game (granted my thoma is double crowned but my point still stands)
thoma being "pathetic" is an understatement. he's niche. and very shit for everything else. i really just suggest saving up for zhongli's rerun, because all of them are sorry sights of a character.

Also, note that Thoma is useless for shielding Ganyu, one of the only characters besides Hu Tao who actually need shields.

The problem with defense scaled shields is that they are generally more "selfish" when compared to HP scaled shield. Shields of all kinds are considered as an additional health bar with HP. Any shield will be able to sustain more damages if wore by characters with higher defense stats. When dev balance the durability of different shield skills, defense scaled shields tend to have less HP. Therefore if some squish characters such as Ganyu are protected by Noelle or Xinyan's shield, the shield won't hold up due to Ganyu's low defense stats. Conversely, if Noelle were to wear Zhongli's shield, the shield becomes unbreakable.
I’m pretty sure the shield scales from whatever the character casting it’s stats are. Zhongli/Diona/Thoma’s shields all scale off of their individual HP, and the same for Noelle’s shield scaling off of her individual DEF.
@@jezaret you are right. But the exact damage taken off the shield from the same attack is different based on the defense who’s taking the damage.

Y'all don't sleep on Noelle though if you don't have Zhongli, mine is an absolute tank.
So many comments who don't like her are mostly meta hogs who think she's only good for early game. Tbh in some Abyss rotations she can do the job (which a lot of people are testing her on). Not to mention the uptime caveat means I did learn how to dodge a bit better, unlike how I probably would if I got Zhongli or if I got Diona earlier.

Why did you not hit Childe with Xinyan's E? Would it not have given you a stronger shield than just the base E?
It would be still wouldn't super be worth it because you have to get in so close to do it you're gonna be taking some hits or having to dodge like crazy versus everyone else that can just apply a strong shield
The best thing to do would be to run in and use her ult to get her shield up quick.

A notable note I realized:
Using Noelle for shielder with Hu Tao is really good, especially in open world, just click elemental skill of Hu Tao and you also get the auto shield from Noelle
It comes with a cooldown of 60 seconds though, so before the 2nd use of Hu Tao skill, you SHOULD use the manual shield from Noelle
Usually 40 scnds of shield are good enough
