Once the absolute fringe of metal, now the primal elder gods of a genre they created. I like that they've stuck to their guns with their sound, not forcibly changing their it as djent mutates around them.
Yeah, they definitely don't change their sound in a profound way, what they do is add elements to it and refashion those elements to fit into their own framework. Like the tremolo picking and note selection in this track sounds kinda black metal-ish to me, but then they reshape it with their signature bends and unconventional patterns so that it just sounds like Meshuggah. They're fucking incredible. The most original and innovative band in metal bar none, imo. Hard to believe these dudes are all in their 50s (apart from Lövgren anyway). Old enough to have grandkids, and they are wiping the floor with bands half their age. Long live Meshuggah.

The monotone vox were a deliberate choice they made around Chaosphere era. Jens used to use a wider range but decided that a monotonous bark would suit the music. Essentially his voice is just another rhythm instrument. Plus he now has more time to work on his faces.
at first the monotone vocal really turned me off for actually years, but now I like it. I think the tone actually gets better as he gets older. it's more smooth, has a lower pitch, and more distortion
It's funny that Haake was actually late with joining the band. The band had already written some songs when their drummer quit and Haake stepped in. He said that he at first was very confused with the rhythms they were doing, but he practiced and went on to create even more insane grooves. Amazing drummer.

First time they’ve tuned the bass an octave below the guitars. Everything released before this had guitars and bass in the same octave. There’s some super gnarly low end in this mix and it sounds absolutely ridiculous (I mean that as a compliment lmao)
