RCG you were truly on top of the world up there. Thankyou for showing us the country without the snow. It's rugged and isolated I think. I assume by the passenger with the dog that one can take their dogs on the train. Well done.
Just got done watching this. This is an awesome ride. Can't wait to see if you do this in 360. 'AWESOME '. Also thank you for letting us see your BEAUTIFUL Country HCG. I had no Idea that Norway is so enchanting and scenic. Such beauty. Thanks HinduCowGirl.
Som alltid - en flott video fra deg! Sammen med Oslo - Ål dekker den jo hele strekningen Bergen - Oslo. Så fint at du har tatt for deg Flåmsbana også. Tusen takk for kjempeflott tur!
Nice to see the progress of construction at Arna. Look above the tunnel entrance at 2:24:40 and you can see the old railroad tunnel entrance running perpendicular to the direction of the train, from the original construction over 100 years ago, before the current Finse tunnel was built. There was a big storm last week. That area is all covered with snow until summer.
We should definitely upgrade the Bergen Line between Lågheller at the northern end of the Finse Tunnel and Mjølfjell to increase reliability and prevent that the line are closed so many times during the winter. New tunnels are the solutions since snow sheds are difficult and expensive to maintain. Have such respect for those men who built this line under harsh conditions. Great video!
They are doing a great job upgrading them to steel constructions these days :) As well as securing the rock and mountains along the track. Should be less service disruption when the work is completed :D But I totally agree with you, the whole line should have been upgraded so we could go at 160 - 200km/h the whole way from Bergen to Oslo, but cost of that would be horrible. As well a certain death to tourism. Taking the train the Bergen line today is a spectacle and scenic, all of this disappear if the hole line is in a tunnel. Therefore I propose to keep and maintain the old line for tourist trains :D
Winter is just arriving, and the snow has started to settle. You can see from the video that the snow has started to cover the tops. From here the season changes fast, so let's hope for some horrifying weather soon ;)
Yet another excellent video!! Love your posts HinduCowGirl!! Keep them coming!! Also, PLEASE turn on your headlights in the tunnels!! I know what they look like inside but I'd still like to see the insides! Thank you young lady!
Question for you. At about 2:24 you can see the old grade to the left from before the Finse tunnel opened. I was surprised to see that the rails are still intact seemingly from the day that portion of the line was abandoned. Is this common? Most railways seem to pull up old rail now even if just for the scrap value.
Usually they remove all tracks. But this is a historic route, and therefore they have kept most of it.. and it would be very costly to remove it now. The Bergen line is one of the biggest engineering feats in the late 1800, early 1900s :D
Thank you for the wonderful video! The frames inside the locomotive and the moment when the shunting locomotive drives your train to the platform make the video very realistic! By the way, near the depot is a tunnel for such a long train? I thought there was only solid rock. It's very interesting to watch the line change from 2005 (I saw a German film). I did not see a flam-train in Myrdal, it does not run now? All your videos start or end in Al, does the driver change there? How long do you have to live there until the next flight? In small Norwegian cities is somewhat dreary, is not it?
+V0LCHA the tunnel takes the whole train :) used to wash trains on the way out. Yep, driver change at Ål. We’re slowed to drive for 5 1/2 hours before we’re required to have a break off the engine. Safety first :)
One question I do have -- At 2:24:00, there is two "caves" in the rock on the left-side. Are these for maintenance of way equipment or something else? Thanks! Again -- great video!
My goodness - so many tunnels! It would be nice if the driver would give a bit of a narration (although I wouldn't understand a thing he said) - just pointing out sights of interest.
This is beautiful so far. I'm pausing in Mirdahl. However, I'm surprised that the railroad bed is so close to the rivers. Obviously, they don't get flooded in the spring, but I'd think that the water would come pretty close. Also, do you do a round trip daily?
+MsSoundguy Yes, do the rountrip in one day. It’s a 13 hour day. Due to global warming the weather has become more wet here. Fewer days with sun, more rainy days, and vastly more rain on those days. Erosion has caused more small avalanches, more flooding of the tracks etc.

Wow! That was a great cab ride. I bet you never get bored driving on this line! I am trying to figure the signalling out. Is it a speed based system?? Do the number of greens signify how many sections ahead are clear? Does a flashing green indicate the fastest route is set at the junction ahead?? I might have more questions for you. Happy driving to you. 🚅
I have been thinking of making a video that explains exactly that for people with pop up text :) A station consist of two Main Entery Signal, and two or more Main Exit Signals, depending on how many tracks there is on a station. The Main Entery Signals always has a pre-signal which is located 800m or more from the Main Entery Signal. This signal gives you the status of the Main Entery Signal. A flashing green means that the Main Entery is showing Two Greens (line speed), if it shows a flashing yellow then the Main Entery has a Red light which means STOP. If bot green and yellow is flashing, it indicates that the Main entery is set to "pass with reduced speed". This happens if you're going into a diverting track, and therefore the speed must be reduced. Hope this made some sense :p
It certainly made a lot of sense, thank you so much for explaining. I'm so looking forward to your next video when there will probably be a bit of white stuff around!! Until then, every best wish to you with many happy miles of driving 😃
Beautiful videos, there wasn't any better since NRK documentaries on Bergensbanen and Nordlandsbanen. Staying with NSB signaling - could you give some explanation on "use signal" signs? As far as I understand (with Google Translator ;) ) NSB rule book, small, rectangular sign under it with two triangles (yellow and black) means "only during daylight", but what means clear "main" (square) sign, and how it differs from the one with horizontal, vertical or both lines together?
I worked out a blast on the horn means level crossing ahead ,by the yellow triangle with a line through it. Plus some other signals ,too complicated for me to explain. But i,m learning slowly.
How busy is this line? Are there many goods trains? The only other trains that pass seem to be passenger multiple units (BM69s?), especially on the lower section between Bergen and Voss.
Are there any plans to duplicate any more of the line after the new tunnel between Bergen and Arna is finished? Even extending some of the stations and passing loops would help a bit: they're very short by Australian standards (the minimum length for new passing loops is at least 1500-1800 m).
+zoqaeski the K5 project aims to build a new double track from Arna to Voss, max speed 250kmh. Problem is, politics... and it will be one freaking long tunnel that spells the end of the scenic view between Voss and Bergen.
HinduCowGirl I looked it up and the works seem massive, plus K5 is only one of the options (the others seem to involve only highway upgrades). I'm surprised there's no railway-only upgrade that does some more incremental improvements to boost the capacity of that section instead of waiting for the big money to build an essentially brand new line.
The weird distortions aren't caused by TH-cam's encoder, but by whatever library they're using to decode the videos in the player. They play fine in other players, like MPV or VLC. I've noticed it on virtually all videos recently in Chrome.
Hi Hinducowgirl was there a complete lack of light from the train ? or were those little blue led's along the tunnel wall ? great stuff by the way. I have been following the route via google earth as well to get a look at various stations.
The headlights was really bad on that engine. :/ The LEDs along the tunnel wall are meant as guiding lights in case we have to evacuate in the tunnel :)
Here is a video with tunnel names and length included: th-cam.com/video/IE1ECXE6U_4/w-d-xo.html And you can find more videos with information if you look around on my channel, I have several videos where I have included different type of information, including information about side tracks, old parts of the line, tunnel names +++
Suggestion: when entering a long tunnel, excise the travel through it until the train emerges again. There is no enjoyment in looking at blackness for five minutes.
RCG you were truly on top of the world up there. Thankyou for showing us the country without the snow. It's rugged and isolated I think. I assume by the passenger with the dog that one can take their dogs on the train. Well done.
I like the little walk you take us on to the train and the interior of the train itself before the interesting journey.
It had never occurred to me that you could walk through the locomotive.

What a difference without snow. Both are beautiful. Another great video! Thanks again.
Another great video! Thanks so much. Greetings from California!
Veľmi prekrasne natočené video 😁😁😁😁. Pochvala a palec hore 😉😉😉😉😉.
Perfektné super 😉😉😉😉😉.
This trip is quite the contrast to the winter runs you've made!
Beautiful! So nice and relaxing.. . And I'm waiting for winter show :)
Great country when you view it, the men who built that track were heroes the hard rock they had to cut, viewing from Cornwall UK
Reminds me of the men of the Union Pacific who conquered the Sierra range.
Great - you have put a new cab ride up. Cannot watch it now but looking forward to seeing it tomorrow - can't wait!!😀

Better you than me. Watching is one thing; having to be in the snow is not one of my favorite things.
I really enjoy watching these videos.
Thanks again for another great train ride and very nice country
hypnotic and now quite so scary as those snowy rides on the edge of the cliffs. Love it.

Lovely and a very nice country and those tunnels what a job they had cutting them hard men arm chair views from UK ,
Stilig, takk for at du deler med oss andre ;)
Great video! Thanks for this share! Greetings from Italy. Ciao, Stefano :-)
Super video again.
Hi. I really enjoy your videos and wonder if you have summer trip on the Bergen line.
I do, just browse my page and you’ll find it :) it’s one called «picking up the flirt»

Thanks for the answer!
In Russia, drivers work continuously for up to 12 hours if on the locomotive has two people, and up to 7 if one.
Oh, yes! Winter is comming...
How long of a break are you required to take before you can operate another train? Thanks for the answer!

HinduCowGirl I've watched most of your videos. The one video that I ask that on is the one that answers it.
Hei, veldig fine minutt for minutt-videoer du har laget! Men jeg lurer på en ting. Hvor lang tid før avgang må du klargjøre lokomotivet og toget? :)
thanks for the prompt reply currently

How busy is this line? Are there many goods trains? The only other trains that pass seem to be passenger multiple units (BM69s?), especially on the lower section between Bergen and Voss.
+zoqaeski freight needs to run at night due to capacity. Very busy line. There is no capacity for freight between Voss and Bergen during daytime.

love the video but the heavy breathing sounds are quite distracting, I must admit.
