    Hey Everyone! Today we're modifying our Squier Paranormal '54 Jazz with a set of Lace Aluma pickups and a Wilkinson Bridge! We featured the Lace Aluma pickups in our Triple Powerhouse Jazz Pickup comparison and were very impressed by the tone and unorthodox construction of the Aluma J's. Today we're going to test them again in a passive configuration with our Squier Paranormal '54 J. Let's do this!
    This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

    I have been wanting a Squier Paranormal bass and a bass modded by you, yesterday my wish came true as my wife picked up this bass up from your reverb store. Yes she is a keeper! I think the bass sounds awesome with tone all the way up and I know you suggested new tone caps and I think we will also move up to 500 K pots. I did that to my Peavey Fury P bass when I put DiMarzio P pickup and it greatly improved output! Can’t wait to play and as always Lobster thank you for your content and I hope you had an awesome holiday!

    I've been waiting for this video. I like the Lace pickups and they are punchier and fatter than the originals but lacking on the high end. I was looking at Nordstrand pickups for my ParJ '54 but thank you for introducing these to me and Happy Holidaze!

  • @thefool2007

    Wow that is punchy and full of bite without being too harsh. I like it! Nice clarity without being brittle. Looks and sounds like a worthwhile mod. To my ears, the Aluma's have less high treble but are considerably more throaty. I like their mids better and feel the tone rolled off options sound better.

    Nice video! Aluma J pups with very limited use of copper. We are learning that the response curve in terms of tone is different that conventionally wound coils with 42 gage wire. I think it would be worth experimenting whether using a LINEAR TAPER volume pot of the same value would clean up the tone as the knobs are decreased. That LINEAR TAPER volume pot also has some affect on the tone pot, so I’m really liking Aluma J pickups. Thanks for bringing these different and varied options to us!

    For some riffs, I like the stock pickups more and for some others, I like the replacement pickups more. When I'm not too fond of the stock pickups is when they sound too zingy. And when I don't like the Aluma J is when they sound too muffled. 500k pots may help in either case.

  • @chuckybigbeat
    @chuckybigbeat ปีที่แล้ว +9

    My ears are digging the stock pups, much more growl. Almost sounds like the difference between rounds and flats after the swap, not a bad thing but for a higher output, I'm just not hearing it.

    • @randygomez9595
      @randygomez9595 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @miguelfernandes333
    @miguelfernandes333 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It sounds like changing the pickups but not matching the pots values, to raise the impedance, has hurt the overall sound of the Aluma's,

  • @thecrossroadcafe7291
    @thecrossroadcafe7291 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also have this bass. I think the Aluma J's sound richer. The stock pickups are pretty good, although a little zingy with the tone dimed. I replaced mine with "Wilde"(Bill Lawrence) pickups and they sound fantastic. I don't like they way the concentric volume/tone controls interact, so I will be rewiring it vvt or vbt. They sure do look cool though. This is a great bass overall, especially if you buy used or get a discount, which I did.

      So true! It's usually all the way and back a bit.

    @lowendLobster - How did you wire the Aluma-J's? They can be wired in a "split" mode which basically uses an extra tap from the tiny little step-up transformer that is on the underside of the pickups (wrapped in the black insulation). I know someone on TalkBass was saying the Aluma-Js were very LOW output, which surprised me...

    Thanks for the great video. I am still looking for pickups for my 1986 Rockinger Headless Status copy . I already saw the comparison with the Delano, DiMarzio and Lace. This was the first time I noticed the location. Now my opinion: The original pickups have these unwanted muddy but still intrusive frequencies. The Lage have a portion of difference with a little bass frequency on top. I think they can assert themselves well in a band. Yes, at first it sounds quieter and very bass-heavy when Tone control at 0%. But with the studio monitors here it is already good, even if quiet. Has anyone tried this with active electronics? Delano Sonar 2S or similar? Groovy greeting Kay
