    Clearly a good player, and doesn’t play a bunch of nonsense show off bullshit to demonstrate, and keeps true to the mission of letting the differences and similarities of these instruments that both are perceived and which actually exist, speak for themselves.
    TREMENDOUS value in that kind of authenticity and transparency.

      He's definitely one huge Stingray fan here on TH-cam, w a sweet collection, and dedication to such a unique and amazing bass design.
      Ironically, during this sound test I liked the SUB and Ray34 just as much as any of the American examples.
      I'm sure the USA models feel and play much better, and that HH is of course the winner. But I'd be happy to take any of them on a gig and be just fine.
      (Says a lot about the lower end models, especially against say Mexican standard Jazz bass for example.)

    This may be an unpopular opinion, but as far as I’m concerned a Musicman is going to sound like a Musicman whether you spend a few hundred or a few thousand on one. You either like the Musicman tone or you don’t. The have that in common with Precision Basses as far as they all kind of sound the same and most people wouldn’t be able to tell a cheap one from an expensive one in a mix. Unless you have money to burn, it pays to cheap out on these basses.

      If we're talking in context of Rays in this vid, Minty or a Ray34 would fit the bill nicely (even HH). Outside of Rays, you have tons of possibilities depending on your budget... I'm biased but I'd say go for the FGN Mighty Power- th-cam.com/video/w7lJXqH6wz0/w-d-xo.html. This thing will do everything you want while sounding and playing incredibly.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Ray Ray! The Darkglass project had the goal of trying to get away from the "traditional" stingray sound and image while maintaining some of the stingray character. The Ray34 and pre-facelift 2017 are definitely very similar in sound, and that difference definitely fades further in a mix. The differences at that point start to come down to personal preference in terms of feel. However, it's night and day between the pre and post facelift 'rays. I have a ton more stingray content coming, stay tuned my friend :)

      Extremely hard to tell, if set up right. My sterling sounds just as good as most ernie balls. Be careful what you hear online, try them out for yourself. I paid 500 for mine, (it's mint color with white pick guard, but I'm looking at the black pick guard) but it sounds great with D'darrio strings (which most videos don't show how great they sound with decent strings) buy do your research before spending 2500 on an ernie ball

      Are the Delano MM humbuckers alnico or ceramic magnet, and how naturally hot are they before the active preamp boosts everything?
      I'm intrigued and genuinely curious what aftermarket humbucker between $50-$70 to drop in my new Walnut stained S.U.B. Stingray.
      I can't decide whether the stock pickup, or the stock 2 band preamp's got to go first.

    Lobster, I can’t make up my mind, I love the smoothie, love the sterling, love the stingray. I have a 2005 stringray 5 and I really love it because you have the pickup selector and the tone. I’m really more of a four string guy, but the stringray doesn’t have the selector for series, parallel and single. Not really interested in a multi pickup version of music man bass. What do you suggest for a a 4 string starter into the stingray line up? Cost isn’t really the factor, it’s just getting a piece I’m gonna love and keep forever.

    While it holds true for all instruments, I feel like MM, Sterling ray basses are less forgiving with bad sound setup. Having owned ray, sub4, sterling sub, none of them sounded good on my crappy setup while I could get a semi decent tone on a squire bass. I gotta say these do sound phenomenal with good pre/amp.

    a bit late I guess - have a OLP 5 string twin humbucker active bass .
    A previous owner upgraded these as these are the same bridge, pickups and active circuit as in my dual humbucker 5 string Music Man.... one wonders why? why find /pay for all those genuine parts and put it on the OLP - it was a dog to play, monster tones (literally the same as my Stingray) but the neck was horrible bowed and twisted, the bridge was mounted half arse and shielding almost nonexistent... I bought it as a "rescue bass" originally thought I could fix the body/neck issues but the reality is I'll probably just gut it and find a good second hand passive 5 string P or J copy and slap the hardware on that
    Apparently that was originally a Korean made OLP (didn't know they did that) but even if it was and was from a quality Korean maker like Samick it must have been poorly looked after (it has a totally beat body) so that's probably the case

  • @daviddesmond2143
    @daviddesmond2143 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is a "wizard" guy on You Tube who did a video comparing the USA H to HH. He says the HH can't do the same tone on the H pickup. Also he says you can't slap on a HH because you will contact the neck pickup. Personally, I disagree on both. How about doing a video comparing the H to HH. Is the bridge pickup wired the same on these basses?

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks David! You bring up an excellent point. So I know of the video you're talking about and that statement is somewhat right but only in a very specific circumstance. When looking at the USA Stingray H and HH (NOT the Stingray Special H and HH mind you), from what I understand the HH had the humbuckers wired in series when the full humbucker was engaged (positions 1, 3 and 5), where the regular Stingray 4 H is wired in the traditional parallel config. For this circumstance, the dude is absolutely correct. I have not played or looked at a Sterling Ray34HH but I know the Ray34H is wired in parallel. Now in a more modern context with the Stingray Special basses, these are wired in parallel for both the H and HH. I did a comparison video with mine which you can see here- th-cam.com/video/Y6PNVtqQ4Mg/w-d-xo.html
      Great question and comment David!

    I'm now kinda getting used to your sense of humor, and the obvious, & often self gushing over your sick collection of amazing basses you own and love.
    Lol, I can't say I blame ya man. Although I still think the yellow one is quite ugly haha!
    Also, you single-handedly kind of got me back into Stingrays again after a 15-year break, so thank you for that!
    Anyway, you've probably covered this in the past, but since I'm new here, what amp/rig/setup are you playing when you demo/compare basses in your man cave??
    Question please, what aftermarket 2 band preamp, other than your DarkGlass would you recommend to pair w the Delano humbucker in your mint Stingray that would sound growly, but maybe come across with a bit more warmth to the signature MM punch? I've had good luck with the Aguilar OBP 2 in the past, but your experience in this depo/& opinion would be much appreciated, thanks!
    I love the sound of the mint Stingray, but somehow it's too clear/sterile IMHO. Like half Stingray, and half Modulus.
    (Which is great if that's what you were going for, just really different, so squeaky bright & clear!

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Seth :), glad to have you here! For my videos, I'm using an Orange Crush 50 BXP (has the dedicated line out compared to the regular Crush 50), going into my Focusrite through the line out. It's a nice home amp and sounds solid. My main "gig" amp is a GK Micro 200 head (will be changing), and my Accugroove Tri112L cab which I've had for over a decade.
      Great question on the preamp, both Seymour Duncan and Mojotone have really nice preamps that would work well here and are very wallet friendly. I have some Aguilar stuff in route for an SUB comparison project, but so far I only have the pickup (which has been installed and sounds great with the stock SUB preamp, big improvement). I'm excited to see how the Aguilar stuff compares. Honestly, I'd be able to give you a much better recommendation once the rest of the pickups and preamps arrive for the comparison - then you'll be able to hear it for yourself! That's what one of my main goals is for the channel, I like to give my opinion on things but the sound clips with the basic signal chain speak for themselves.
      I very much hear the modulus comparison with Minty, I haven't played one in a while but it definitely has more of that hi-fi/modern rock tone largely due to that Darkglass "sound". My goal for that project was an unorthidox combination of parts that would give the bass a unique and unusual personality compared to the more traditional/classic feel of the regular Stingray. With that, I think we greatly succeeded!

    Well…I finally found one I like, and couldn’t leave the store without it. All the “sterling by MM” I tried, just didn’t “do it”for me. I just came to terms that I’m not a MM fan. So I figured the US MM couldn’t be that much better, so didn’t bother worrying how much they are…and DAMN! they are pricey. …but, the way we as humans are wired…you find what you really need/want/ connect with in a special way, is there, waiting for you to stop looking for what isn’t there, and to see what is! I normally prefer maple fretboards and passive circuitry, but WHAM!!!! Rosewood and active!!!
    Anyway, I don’t know if you still read older posts, but…Cheers, Lobster Will! I finally get it..at least, I finally found one I like. • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      heheh great question! I felt that the Ray34 and '17 Ray were very close in feel, though the Sterling had a bit of a rougher neck finish (can be fixed with some 0000 steel wool). The "Classic" rays like the Smoothie, Stingray Classic, Sabre classic, etc. with the thick gloss on the neck has one sort of feel, where the satin finished modern necks are very different. I've actually been on a huge SR Classic kick, and my ray and sabre classic have been my favorites as of late (vids coming on them soon). Overall, they're all in the same ballpark of playability. They're comfortable, well built instruments and they've been able to maintain those aspects across the entire lineup. The lower end models use cheaper materials (basswood in the SUBs, cheap electronics in the SUB, no compensated nut on the sterlings, no headstock gloss, etc.), but they're able to offer up a wide range of instruments at different price points that all still feel familiar.

      Thanks Martin! The SUBs get underestimated but they're such great mod platforms. We'll definitely be doing a 5 stringer mod, as there's a lot more things to consider on the 5 vs the 4. The 4 stringer uses a lot more 'standard sized' parts, and the string spacing and pickup shape doesn't vary too much between variants of SBMM and USA EBMM. The 5'er is all over the place in both string spacing and pickup shape which I think we should address with mods. The stock SUB5 has 16.5mm spacing where the Ray35 and USA models have 17.5mm. Quality 5 string replacement bridges of this spacing aren't that readily available (I need to do some digging).
