The strainer 'thing' is used for pressing fruits. I use one each year whenever I'm making tomato juice, sauce etc. It would normally have a wooden piece with it, used to press the fruit through the holes.
Yes, it is called a “chinoise” and there is usually a wooden pestle to press the juice from the pulp. Modern ones are usually made from pressed steel or aluminum. I love the airy style of this one, which is probably just used with some cheesecloth to strain rather than press. Cool find!
As it goes with experimenting, I had access to old worn planks painted white. I sanded it but didn’t get all the white paint off, too much work. I just sanded till it was smooth. So I decided to stain the parts that were bare wood, and included the white paint as well and was amazed to see the stain took everywhere. What a gorgeous striated color I wound up with, so worn and old looking. I did it on partially distressed black paint as well and that was so unique. This may be my new go to technique from now on. Some crazy ideas really do work.
I loved that floral picture with the red/burgundy mat! It would have looked fantastic rematted with a cream mat and a distressed wood frame. I would have chosen that for sure! Fun video today Deidre, thanks for the inspiration 😊
The strainer is a China Cap strainer. They are often used w a conical shaped wood pestle. If it had fine metal mesh, similar to the small handheld strainers, then it's a Chinois strainer.
I am looking for a strainer that you found! Love the tag/frame that you inserted old advertising in! Too bad you didn't get the owl soap dish - it was way cute and looked retro!😁

My grandmother used one when making jam. I do remember the big wooden piece also.
Love your decor! Especially the old books I recently got 3 books copyright in the 1800s for a $1 each at a yard sale
Great find!
The strainer could be a tomato ricer for making tomato juice for canning.
I love thrifting. You picked out some good items.❤
Thank you! 😊

I believe the strainer is a canning strainer. Could also be a homemade jelly strainer which would be used with a wooden pointy ended pestal.😊
Yep I think so also
The metal strainer is called “Chinois”
Love this
Thanks
It's a fruit sieve for making jam or jelly. My grandma had one.

The strainer is a “China Cap” a fine strainer that would have a wooden pusher.
Yes, I think you’re right
Vintage tomato strainer however missing the stand and pestle.
Wow...my thrift stores don't have all the nice things.
Oh no!
