Borodin Quartet play Shostakovich String Quartet no. 8 - video 1984

The Borodin Quartet playing Shostakovich's String Quartet no. 8, op. 110, in 1984. Skip to 08:04 for the start. The introduction is by director Lev Arnshtam. Five of Arnshtam's films contain music composed by Shostakovich, including Five Days, Five Nights, the one set in Dresden which is tied up with this quartet. I tried to remove the occasional distortion / clipping but it appears ingrained in the soundtrack. The Borodin Quartet at that time were Mikhail Kopelman, Andrei Abramenkov, Dmitri Shebalin and Valentin Berlinsky.

Ντμίτρι Σοστακόβιτς - «Κουαρτέτο εγχόρδων Νο 8», μεταγραφή για ορχήστρα εγχόρδων. Το συγκεκριμένο έργο είναι αφιερωμένο στα θύματα του πολέμου και του φασισμού και γράφτηκε το 1960, ενώ ο συνθέτης βρισκόταν στη Δρέσδη μαζί με κινηματογραφικό συνεργείο, για την πραγματοποίηση των γυρισμάτων της ταινίας «Πέντε μέρες - Πέντε νύχτες». Η σύνθεση του έργου έγινε κάτω από το βάρος των εντυπώσεων του συνθέτη τόσο από τα γυρίσματα της ταινίας, όσο και από τις αφηγήσεις των κατοίκων της περιοχής για τις θηριωδίες των ναζί στα στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης, αλλά και για τη φρίκη του βομβαρδισμού της Δρέσδης, από τα βρετανικά και αμερικανικά αεροπλάνα στο τέλος του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου.

When Shostakovich was forced to join the communist party in 1960, he almost suffered a nervous breakdown, and purchased a large quantity of sleeping pills because he was thinking of suicide. He then composed his 8th String Quartet in 3 days as a requiem for himself. He wrote: “In composing it I shed as many tears as urine flows after half a dozen mugs of beer.”
