There is one problem with this series and that is Superboy wearing the Superman suit. Superman The Movie (1978) established that Kal El did not wear the suit when he was a teenager/young adult. With that being the case he would have done his heroics as Superboy in normal clothes. He does not wear the suit until after he visits the fortress of solitude as an adult and learns where he came from and who his real parents were. The SuperBoy series exists in the same universe as the Christopher Reeve Superman films. Superboy wearing the suit would mean he is Superman and has the knowledge of his Kryptonian past. Therefore, he would have known he was dealing with impostors due to the fact both of his real parents died when Krypton exploded. The Smallville series presented a more accurate direction of Kal El's young adult years. He did not wear the Superman suit until the end of the series.
@@1977TA Superboy does NOT exist in the same universe as the Reeve movies. It just has the same producers. Smallville is only accurate to the post John Byrne Man of Steel Superman continuity regarding his childhood. But the fact is, there are more comics WITH Superboy as a big part of Clark's childhood than without due to the fact that Superboy comics ran for as long as they did. And then Secret Origin happened, and now Superboy is canon in the comics again.
@@SuperboyBeyondTHANK YOU! It's hard to take these complaints seriously when information and this episode are out there for people to discover on their own. People just want to react without having all the information.
This is a unique circumstance where Marlon Brando and George Lazenby can play the same character and not seem strange. The Salkind Jor-El got great performances out of both.
The Sakinds, who produced the Christopher Reeve Superman movies, also produced this series and although they evidently aren't in continuity with each other, it is nice that the costumes resemble their movie counterparts pretty much exactly. Also, James Bond as Superman's father!
I'm confused because we see in the episode this isn't really Jor-El and Lara. They're shapeshifters impersonating them. It's right there in the episode.
In the modern comics, Superboy is the "clone"-hybrid son of Superman and Lex Luthor, Conner Kent/Kon-El. This show was created before the arc that introduced that Superboy, based off the original comics' version where it was Clark in his younger days before taking up the Superman name. While he becomes Superboy at the age of 8 in the Silverage comics, this show has him assume the identity from 18-22 years old (22 seems to be the max. age for Superboy), while 25 is the minimum age to be Superman.
George Lazenby, the first actor to play James Bond after Sean Connery, ( Lazenby only ended up doing one Bond movie - On Her Majesty's Secret Service) Plays Jor-El in two episodes of Superboy.
He's college-aged in this series. Its supposed to be the serialized version of the comic Superman: The Secret Years in the time while he was in college but BEFORE he started naming himself Superman officially.
LOL 😂😂 As a 59 years old country guy living in America State I grew up watching " Sesame Street ," Children Television Public Broadcasting Company ,PBS station in the 1970s even I know that was funny 🤣.
When Jor-El said "You were taken from us" I was not happy with his choice of words!!! Kal-El was placed into a small rocket and sent to Earth on purpose. He was not "taken"!!! Plus as well all know from the origin of Superman displayed in the George Reeves tv show ...Krypton exploded and according this version no one else escaped! Jor-El and Lara died.
Right on all counts. The real Jor-El, if he had survived, would not have chosen those words. He would have clearly said that he sent him to Earth in a rocketship, or words to that effect, so it couldn't be mistaken otherwise. Those two were merely alien imposters who assumed the appearances of Jor-El and Lara to abduct Superboy and study him. The real Jor-El and Lara were deceased.
That's the modern interpretation (and actually a suggestion by Marlon Brando). The original character (from the comic books) wore a genuine 'S' on his chest to signify the first letter of the English word 'Super."
@VirgilB01 Well if you watch the whole episode and it has been mentioned in other comments, these were aliens posing as his parents to lure him into a trap cause they were bounty hunters and he was considered a big prize, also as superboy he knew nothing of his past yet or of his home planet, the fortress of solitude didnt exist yet all he knew was what his foster parents told him of how they found him. Its more accurate then smallville is anyway

the whole premise of the show was superboy didnt know where he came from. even though we all know about krypton, i remember they went to great lengths not to mention it. once he found out i guess he would become a "man".
I thought the Salkinds still held rights to Superman at this point. I'm guessing it was a combination of rethinking the SM franchise after Quest for Peace, and wanting to take advantage of all the properties that they had licensed (SM, SB and SG). The Salkinds probably figured since it was a sunk cost, might as well monetize it as much as possible. ALso, one of the ideas under consideration for a 5th film was to use the Superboy actor to start a new Superman franchise.
Looks like this is another Superman-based series that's worth a look. I'll have to see if it can be found in a secondhand entertainment store or on Amazon.
