are you getting the EF or PL mount? I shoot sony and this is very tempting because i was going to upgrade to the FX3.. but is it better to invest into EF, side note: i feel it's old.. or invest into PL if i decide to go to BM

This is to add perspective for people who are complaining about the dynamic range of the pyxis.
So here is cineD dynamic range test done to a signal to noise ratio of 2. The new bmcc6k gets a score of 11.7 so the pyxis will be the same as it the same sensor. A $3000 camera can’t get much more DR. The bmpcc og had a score of 11.2 and it’s 10 years old. Sure a $25000-$80000 camera has you are willing to pay a whole lot more a true DR of 13-15.

cool but not sure what your planning on doing with 17k footage...IMAX? no way to view even half that resolution. not to mention the hard drive space. I wish BM would just focus on making a better sensor with more dynamic range and highlight falloff. instead of chasing the resolution race. for feature films, My ARRI Alexa classic footage still looks WAY better and it only shoots 2k.

Looks interesting especially cost wise. For people getting into filmmaking it’s a great option but for most I think I lacks in areas.
Also it’s just changing cameras weekly on TH-cam and I think if you are looking to make better looking work lighting is where it’s at not the resolution of sensor.
I’ll save my cash on this one, but sure there are going to be some nice cameras to choose from on eBay so I’m all good for that haha
I look forward to seeing some hands-on reviews soon. That price point is very tempting, and I will be looking at this whenever I need to upgrade. Even without AF, pairing this with the new DJI Focus Pro system will make this a solid setup.

Yeah pretty crazy they have a 65 now. Only other cam I know like that is the rental Alexa 65. Over all a Alexa would be better obviously but the daily rate would likely be the same as the price of buying a URSA 17k. Although I would not want to work with file sizes that big personally, even for my studio that would be cumbersome. Exited to see it in person though. @@KofiYeboah

At first i was like huh? Like why but i just came from your other video talking about how you can rent what you need if that is what you need for the job. Honestly that is such a good idea, like save the money buy something that most your clients will be fine with and when the occasional higher end requirements are needed rent it out and put that cost on client. I think people forget that the goal of this whole film making process is to MAKE money not constantly be losing it in gear. I dunno man I’m an fx6 shooter and this thing looks awesome.

$3k sounds like an additional piece of kit vs a complete ditch of a proven global shutter camera. I like that BlackMagic does it big. Great buzz on the product announcement. BM has a legit end to end delivery system. The new form factor will be welcomed. And it's cool they are still privately owned.

I think if you’re not shooting handheld like nuts , and mostly sticks , Dana dolly or even a bit of gimbal you’re okay!

They're probably thinking: "Can we sue Blackmagic??"
It doesn't. Not at all. They are different markets. BM cams have worse dynamic range, worse reliability, worse color precision, a worse RAW format and no OLPF - which gives an extra bit of often unwanted cheap sharpness to everything. BM cams are not "the best" at anything. They're just cheap. If you're working top-end sets you just get the best for what you're doing - so not a BM cam.

Biggest issue is rolling shutter here. 15-25 milliseconds. I use an A7IV which has 18 millisecond readout speed & it’s so jellowy whenever I’m doing a less stable handheld shot or a faster pan.
I made 1 movie with BMCC and 2 movie with BMPCC 4K, both with craziest handheld, panning and CGI, projected 12 meter wide on DCP for theatrical release as well as festival. Do you know how many times audience complained about rolling shutter?. ZERO.
@@Akasacarafilm BMPCC 4K has less then half the readout speed of the BMCC 6k/PYXIS. As to the original BMCC I can’t find any numbers but it doesn’t seem to be something people had issue with. I’ve since learned that you can manage the rolling shutter for the BMCC 6K/PYXIS using gyro metadata in Davinci Resolve so shouldn’t be an issue for people who edit with that.
A7IV has a readout of 25ms and this Pyxis is close to 20ms.
As a former BM user had the 4k, 6k sold for an FX6, I’ve missed the image quality so much, that price point for that body is insane and definitely would sell my FX6

I just wish they had better screen position and internal NDs but the next iteration may have one or both of these things. This requires an external monitor so that's kind of a bummer and I anticipate this being the biggest complaint but for this price point it's totally fine.

I'm thinking, Grab the L mount version, throw a nd adaptor to ef on it and bam internal ND and the option of getting compact L mount lenses too

If this is the same sensor as the other black magic 6k FF camera (and the same as the Panasonic s1h) the rolling shutter might be pretty bad on it. Especially if you are coming from a global shutter camera like the Komodo, or comparing this to a fast readout sensor like the fx3
I’ve had one for a few months and stuff on sticks, dolly, and gimbal have been amazing
@@KofiYeboah Glad to hear it, I’ve just had too many shots become mush on sensors with 16ms readouts or slower (the BM6k is 18ms, s1h is around 22ms) and I don’t want to be worrying about pan speeds or action shots when I have better options available for my work cases.
I make camera setting changes on my FX3's by tilting the flip out screen to aways face me. Now I'll have to always bend down from behind the camera and look at it from the side upside down to make changes. It would be one thing if it was just a settings screen, but the fact that it's a monitor is what's killing me. What camera op monitors a scene sideways? I'm sure when the dust settles, we'll all have to mount a separate monitor to actually make this work.
I do wish they did something about the screen, to be fair, I’m not going to pretend I don’t rig my camera out with a monitor anyways
@@KofiYeboah Yeah they missed the mark with this. I do 5 camera FX3 shows all the time and I don't have the luxury to do complete camera build outs with external monitors. Having a movable viewing monitor in 2024 is a no brainer. Don't know what that R&D engineer was high on when he thought this was a good idea.

Everything is great, the lacking of ND doesn't bother me much. Pair it with DJI lidar and you got face auto focus. However the rolling shutter is kinda meh since it's the same sensor from BMCC 6K.

@@KofiYeboah If you need fast readout or serious autofocus for a specific shot or two, you can straight up buy a Sony crash cam with this Pyxis for less than the cost of a Komodo. It's crazy. Toss an FX30 in your kit and call it a day. My brain is still curious about what other L Mount options might pair well with this cam.

I just got my komodo x a month ago, I got it because I couldn't stand my pocket 6k pro body anymore. Then they come out with this???? I always have bad timing when buying film gear lol. Now I'm wondering if I should sell mine, but I want the new ursa cine.

@@KofiYeboah well I initially wanted a more high end full frame cinema camera, but ended up with the red after another camera deal fell through, I’m not selling it because you are, I’m happy with my red, but after the new Blackmagic cameras, what I ultimately want to do is high end cinematography for feature films, and the ursa cine 12k would make sense for me. It’s got all those features, plus the capabilities of the sensor and different sensor format options. It seems future proof and versatile in my opinion. It’s also not that much more expensive. Does that make sense?

sounds good, but really for around the same price you could get a used Red Epic Dragon package which shot some of the biggest feature films of all time. with 16+ stops of dynamic range. this seems like its just a BMpocket camera in a box shape with a few more features.
Unfortunately, there isnt a stock of Red Epic Dragon's lying around for as many people looking at this as a viable option

I just wish it had ND’s. Not to mention just allowing that monitor to flip out, keeping the second mini-XLR, putting ProRes back in there (why not?) and going with V-mount instead of BPU. I’d have paid significantly more for those features. It feels like blackmagic is giving with one hand and taking away with the other which is weird. I’ll stick to my C70 for now.

Ha, yes. I’ve looked at that too but it is obviously a different beast in terms of size and weight. Not that either the Pyxis or any other Blackmagic cameras are bad cameras by any means (they are very affordable for a start), I just think the Pyxis wouldn’t solve many problems for me. It might do for you though! In which case go for it!

It really looks like Black magic is trying to compete with both the FX6 and the burano with their new releases. I don't love their full frame 6K sensor, but the new 12K looks incredible.
As for the autofocus I'm hoping they've teamed up more with Panasonic than May start using a dual pixel array on the 6K. Not really holding my breath for that though.
With that brand new focus pro , it’s a match made in heaven !
So they increased the price by $500, removed the built in monitor, added a small screen on the SIDE, so that it cannot be easy to access or see, put in the same sensor and somehow you think it's better than Komodo-x?

No. I don’t know your use case so im not recommending that at all
The Pyxy looks nice if you didn't have a camera or if you like the poster, are a content creator who will benefit from these rapid changes with giant price gaps. Even if he loses 6 thousand dollars from his sale, he will win with the 3 thousand dollar price point of the black magic camera. You can always rent any one of the cameras that you want to use. Reliability is a big question that will not be answered with any credibility for a few months from now. You would lose money in the sale of your komodo, gear and still have to pay for basic rigging accessories aside from losing 16 bit HQ R3D, a few stops of dynamic range and a global shutter. Put the rf-ef speed booster on the komodo and you close the "full frame" marketing sales point gap.
