This is one song I never get tired of listening to, Wayne Nelson does an outstanding job on this tune; he's one of the few singers on the planet that can chew gum and sing at the same time. Thank you for posting.
A very legendary band: Little River Band, playing a timeless classic masterpiece here. They should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I love on this song, Wayne Nelson leading vocals, and bass. Graham Goble, following along on rhythm guitar, and vocals with Beebe Birtles. The lead guitarist (don't remember name) played the lead to perfection, along with the keyboardist, and the drummer in the back there. John Farnham leading the way most notably with Wayne Nelson up front. Glenn Shorrock did not appear here, but Farnham did sound a lot like him here. This was a "live" performance, and it sounded just like the original studio recording. Though we will never experience great bands like this anymore, it's always great to keep listening to this "treasure" of wonderful music. It just always makes me happy because it's something I can always go back to.🎵🎶🎼
This kicks ultimate ass! This is my favorite song of their's. I play it over and over in the car on a CD and it just "moves me". Takes me into a different world.
Seeing them live in Scottsdale all those years ago was one of the greatest moments in my life and being able to sing this song with them (picking me out of the front row audience) was a dream come true! :)
The lead guitar player is Stephen Housden. I saw them LIVE in August 2001 at an outdoor festival. No charge to get in. We sat on the grass right in front of the stage. I got the lead singer's autograph, Wayne Nelson before they started to play. He was hanging around by the edge of the steel fence. Nice guy. Stephen didn't play the leads like the studio version but he still kicks ass over a lot of guitar players. I wish I could play that good.
This is the best video version I have seen of this classic for LRB. Wayne Nelson nailed his vocal, and notice how John Farnham, who has a huge voice, in deference to Wayne, stays off the microphone in his back up vocals. Also, the band actually did the complete back up lyrics, which for some reason isn't sung in other videos I have seen. A powerful performance.

I saw Wayne lead the LRB in Greensboro NC in 2006 or so. I could not believe how effortless, powerful and in-key his voice was. This performance was how I remembered him leading a much more fragmented version of the original band here and I was still super impressed.

Wayne and Glen both did great jobs as vocalists of the band. I always wondered why Night Owls sounded so much different from their other hit songs and I recently found out a couple of years ago that it was Wayne, not Glen singing on it.
When I saw The Little River Band Stephen Houseden was playing lead and some of the solos he played similar to the studio version but mostly adlibbed a lot. Wayne Nelson's voice was still great. Wayne really rocks on vocals. David Briggs played the BEST solo on "Night Owls".
Stephen Houseden owns the right's to Little River Band's name. The others are not even allowed to say "former LRB". He took them to court about this. Wayne played in JF's band for several years. Last I heard Wayne is playing in the current LRB.

This is the only song that LRB let Wayne Nelson take the lead on, and it is my favorite of all the LRB's greatest hits. However, Wayne got the last laugh since he has been the lead singer of LRB in the U.S. for the past 30 years and was still touring until Covid. It was unfortunate that the original members lost their ownership rights of LRB when they left the band in the 80's, which later ensued lawsuits when they tried a reunion as LRB, but lost. Wayne always had an incredible voice, but the original members under utilized his talent and only had him play bass and do backup vocals.
I didn't know Wayne singing lead was such a rarity. Producer George Martin had preferred Wayne's version of "Take It Easy On Me", but Glenn Shorrock put up a fuss. After listening to both, I prefer Glenn's, only because it's been ingrained in me for nearly forty years.
I don't think Nelson got the last laugh! The original trio singing LRB songs has had much more success! Housden's got the rights I meant to say. Nelsons only fame is he's a damn good vocalist & bass player, not such a good guy though & he knows he's got millions of pissed off LRB fans & instead of sharing it he's holding onto it like a spoilt child! I will never go to see this tribute LRB band he runs with! They're awful & sound off key all the time from the the small amounts I've heard! Shorrock is still out there singing though & sounds great for his age so he has the last laugh along with Goble & Birtles!

Original vinyl LP it was David Briggs in the studio. Stephen Housden is not listed on the LP dated 1981 but is faking the lead on all the "Night Owls " videos. Briggs was the guitarist for Little River Band at the band’s peak from 1976 to 1981. Google search for Stephen Housden shows his web page & says in August 1981 Stephen was asked to join one of the Little River Band, as their lead guitarist. Facebook shows Stephen as the guy in the video. 1981 Briggs left & Housden replaced him.
Unfortunately the finger movement ain't constant with the lead passage so what the fuck is going on they certainly are not playing however its a brilliant song 👏
