10 Tips: How to Properly Floss Your Molars

  • Many have asked, "How do I reach my back molars with floss?" Well, in this video, Dr. Nemeth & Olivia give us 10 tips on how to properly floss your teeth, specifically the molars!
Dr. Nemeth actually doesn't use floss to clean his teeth! Check out the full video to see what he recommends.
    Tip #1
Use a long piece of floss. You need to wind it around your fingers very thoroughly.
    Tip #2
Use your index fingers. Dr Nemeth uses his index fingers because he thinks it's the easiest to reach back and floss your molars.
    Tip #3
Floss might not be the best thing for you! If the spaces between your teeth are large, try using yarn, or an interdental brush.
    Tip #4
Inter proximal cleaners are easier to use and more effective. They are disposable floss picks that can be used to floss your back teeth much more easily
    Tip #5
Use different sized brushes for larger spaces. Make sure you are finding something that will fit between your teeth properly. If floss barely makes it between your teeth, stick with floss. If you have a larger gap, an inter proximal brush may be better to properly clean that space.
    Tip #6
Try Bending the brush to reach the angle. Many of the floss picks will bend in order to floss the back molars more easily.
    Tip #7
Use whichever fingers are most comfortable. We stated that the index fingers are usually the best to use. However, use your thumb, or even your middle finger. Whatever works best for you is what you should use.
    Tip #8
Move the floss along so it stays clean. Make sure you move the dental floss along so that you have a fresh piece of floss between every tooth. That way you're not using the same contaminated, worn piece of floss in your whole mouth.
    Tip #9
Floss with a small piece. It makes it much easier to control and reach your back teeth, the molars.
    Tip #10
Try using a water flosser. We recommend it to virtually all of our patients. It will flush out material that you may miss with the floss. Dr Nemeth recommends using it twice a day, BUT the Waterpik does not replace floss or inter proximal cleaners.
The Inter proximal cleaners or floss picks will rub the gum tissue to stimulate it, get the blood flowing, and keep your gums healthy.
Dr Nemeth says his #1 go to is the Softpik Advanced. Its much easier to use and more effective than traditional dental floss!
Flossing is critical in keeping your mouth healthy. Make sure to keep your gums healthy, because if you have a healthy mouth, you will be healthier!

This is one of the better videos on flossing. I actually tend NOT to watch videos from dentists on flossing, because they always demonstrate on a model of the mouth, maybe by virtue of the profession. Yet the main difficulty is flossing your own mouth and most videos just don't address it. Thank you for at least explaining about flossing your own mouth.

I haven’t heard anything about sonic toothbrushes....
I use the Phillips Sonicare toothbrush, in addition
to floss. I can’t imagine NOT having it now.
It stimulates the gums and is incredible with how well it cleans!
Don’t press hard, people think the harder you brush, the better the clean... NOT SO!
You don’t want to use heavy pressure with ANY toothbrush.

Thank you. I had gingivitis and periodontal disease and suffered through scaling. I am better now, I am flossing regularly and brushing after each meal, I also use the gum picks now because my hygenist recommended them and I had pockets of 7 that are now 5's and I am using the waterpik and I am hoping that the pocket around my molers will go down to a 4. My mouth is much better, no more bleeding.

    • @Nakameguro97
      @Nakameguro97 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Don't give up! I recently had some 6's that went down to 3. I find waterpiking after every meal and running the Sonicare 30m afterwards help immensely. Those gum picks are also a tremendous help - I feel they do better to remove plaque than flossing. But things aren't perfect yet - all my wisdom teeth are out and I have 8's beyond the last molars in three corners. I am hoping that gum stimulation with the waterpik and better cleaning will improve the numbers back there. One last thing - until you get your gums stabilized, get dental cleanings more often. After getting vaccinated, I had one deep cleaning (with a lot of bleeding) and one regular cleaning six weeks afterwards. That cleaning went well, so the next one will be three months out.

With floss we're supposed to use a clean section (the next inch or so) between each set of teeth so that we're not moving the bacteria from one part of the gum to another. Wouldn't the same be true for the inter-proximal tools? Should I use one for each molar gap or are they different?

Contradictory: likes to rub and toughen up the gums. That's called irritation and will cause receding. Gums are super sensitive. A light touch with floss sounds much better than a brush

How do I floss my back molars with a gum pocket? The back side of my back molar is covered with my gums so only the front three sides are exposed. It’s hard for me to slide the floss over the top surface of the tooth and “wrap” behind since the gum grows over the back and back top surface of part of the tooth. Can you do a video on that ? Thanks

I’m just wondering do I go under the gum line between the gum and tooth? I seem to have one dentist say I shouldn’t, that I should just go in between each teeth? Or other will say I go into the space between the teeth and gum if that makes sense... feeling so confused:(

I also love the “soft pick advanced” however can not get them to go in from the inside of the teeth, they only conveniently fit in between from the outside (or from the cheek direction-and not from the inside tongue direction, if that makes sense.

Like Dr. Olivia mentioned, what if the space between the teeth is too small for the inter-proximal brushes? Would you still recommend to try and work up to being able to use them or stick to just floss for cleaning between the teeth? My worry would be that the brushes could wear away at the tissue causing damage. Thank you for your videos!

How much pressure should you use? My back molars don't have big gaps either so you really need to get the floss in there properly. I'm always worried about pressing too hard though, I know you mentioned toughening up the gums, but surely its not healthy for your gums to be pushing down hard with floss? At the same time I know you need to make sure you get in between the gaps and get that food out.

I’ve started to use the waterpik and an ultra thin interdental flosser after going to the dentist and having bleeding on almost every posterior tooth. That really scared me into going above and beyond with home-care bc perio tx is expensive! Lol But six months later, I went back for my cleaning and I had no bleeding at all. Also, at first I used some hydrogen peroxide in my waterpik but I’m not sure if this is something I should be doing daily or a couple times a week. What’s your opinion?

I became very sick supposedly with gastritis, which caused me to lose 25 pounds and cause unbelievable debilitating joint pain and weakness, but anther odd thing that happened was that my front lower tooth shifted backwards significantly. I looked as if it were pushed back. It's there a disease, like auto immune that would cause that?
