12:30 You should have also tried with the side panel in place because with that amount of fans, it's possible that the thermals are better with sides closed.
Ikr? Just around 2 years ago he live streamed with the title “I’ve been thinking of retiring”. I think he’s mind has definitely changed about that recently
Isn't the lack of side panel actually a disadvantage in this case? I mean, with that many fans surely the airflow must be superb and actually required to evacuate the hot air properly
Not really due to convection and having that much open space for air to escape , any hot air will naturally rise up and out of the case no fans needed , while if your limited to just one fan and the toatall pressure of the case pulling exhaust heat , it will accumulate faster due to those restrictions in airflow
@@lucidx2 convection isn't doing anything with that much airflow. What I could see happening is more of the air coming off the GPU being sucked in by the CPU cooler, because the air from the intake fans is escaping out the side instead of forcing it out the back of the case.
I love the fact that when Splave isn't talking, he's death staring somebody behind the camera. Makes it look like Linus is being held hostage by the Russian Mafia.
😂😂😂 pretty much exactly what I was think. Twist is that Splave is the one being held hostage by the LTT mafia & threatened because he’s terrified of being on camera
You should've kept the side panel on the Splave for better results. In a closed environment the fans can suck much more fresh air over the CPU/GPU coolers.
Doubt it, components usually run at their peak in open air. Cases serve to protect the parts of the PC, and case fans are there to mitigate the side effect of heat buildup. With the side panel off the GPU can be exhausting its heat directly out of the case while the bottom fans feed it fresh air. They should have kept the side panel on though, but for the opposite reason, because the components are probably running cooler than normal with it off.
Did you really thermal test the fractal torrent with the side panel open? You know that's a positive pressure case... Right? EDIT: Dude, no, seriously, make the test again. The hole glory of that case is that the pressure coming from the front fans makes almost impossible for the gpu temps to reach the CPU cooler. Is literally the case with the best temps on the market while also being positive pressure.

Since you mentioned having a UPS, how about some videos on testing the benefits of having one? Or perhaps some different use cases. Personally, I have small UPS units for both my tower and my internet. I'm planning to get a third when I set up a NAS device. I also have family who keep a UPS connected to the kids' TV.
I've considered getting one, but the idea of having to mess with replacing and dispose of the batteries every 5 years kind of turns me off of it, and I seem to have pretty stable power where I live. I'd also like to see a more in depth video on the subject.
maybe you have to watch linus as long as i have in order to get the jokes.. but, they're not ACTUALLY recommending to get a UPS. they're saying if you get the Splave PC, which they low-key don't recommend, because, Linus mentioned 4 times about not liking the cooler in it, and also low-key mentioned that aside from the top-binned silicon, it's essentially the same as their machine, only 5% faster.... you could get 5% faster than stock just by using EVGA precision X OC and upping your video card a bit... so, i mean, 5% is literally nothing in terms of overclocking performance. (but overclocking doesn't really ever get anyone much more performance anyhow... but i think they were expecting better given that this guy is ranked number 1 in overclocking) anyway, they mentioned the UPS because they were running two 1500W (approximately) power supplies, which, together at full power, means they're going over the maximum amperage allowed on a typical home power circuit (i.e. it'll blow the breaker). he also mentions that their machine is $5100, but this guy doesn't know how much his machine is going to sell for yet.... linus throws shade at that in the end. linus basically ripped this guy a new one, but did it in a very passive aggressive way, and i think it might have been easy to miss, but i assure you, don't worry about a UPS (unless you're a business or streamer or something, but even then, nowadays, how often does your power REALLY go out? where I'm at, it almost never goes out even during storms), i also assure you that linus and team would recommend just spending your money on a water cooler and doing some overclocking yourself. Linus even says that intel and manufacturers guarantee their products will work at any ambient temperature, which he could not say the same for the Splace PC. IF that's not ripping dude a new one, i don't know what is. Trust me, Don't give this Splave PC another thought, and don't worry about the UPS slight-of-hand joke at the end there.
weird quote from linus with the 1000+$ tower. Maybe it is just a NA problem with shitty power but here in europe I haven't heard from anyone that they actually use one. For a home server with important data it is another story but even in businesses for normal worker's computer (that still have important data), they don't use ups's. A custom loop is very safe to use as long as you know what you’re doing.
im in the market for a UPS for my unraid server, and i would LOVE to see a huge UPS testing / breakdown of multiple models. im surprised that hasnt been done on LTT yet
That last comment about needing a UPS is spot on for me. I had crashing issues for years, even after swapping out psu's and undervolting everything. After getting a UPS I have had 0 crashes and my stuff is protected on top of that. Dirty power is a real thing.
We're to the point where, as far as I'm concerned, we spend more than enough on even reasonable systems that a UPS should just be a standard piece of the setup now.

Power and wireless interference aside, with the side of the case off you are interrupting the optimal air flow out the back. Splave specifically mentioned it wasn't an issue with the GPU blowing into the CPU cooler. With the proper ducting in place (aka close up the case) you might not have seen some of the issues you did. It's such a fine-tuned system that interrupting the airflow the way you did will skew the results.
If you've got bad/dirty power a UPS with automatic voltage regulation, or even just a dedicate voltage regulator, is definitely a good idea. We occasionally get power spikes bad enough to blow incandescent bulbs out of the fixture and bad brown outs. After having several devices suffer from the bad power everything very important is on a UPS with AVR and I have a higher power standalone voltage regulator for all the other electronics. They're not very expensive and can really save your devices by automatically correcting high or low voltage
You're definitely right. And honestly, with the amounts that we spend even on more reasonable systems, I'd argue that maybe it should just be a standard component to a setup at this point.
I am a little confused on all of this.. I have a somewhat no compromises set up.. and I heard and purchased a 1000-1200 watt power conditioner. It apparently does everything a surge protector does while cleaning up the power delivery... do the UPS with AVR do what a power conditioner does too? Should I be using a ups with avr and just repurpose my power conditioner.
closing the case will improve air flow, you had the super duper one open resulting in loss of the air pressure. so the overclocked one could perform way better i m guessing.
It annoys me so much that all these FLOW cases have the mother board lined up in the direction where the heat sink blades on most of the equipment do not flow with the direction of air. Heat rises, you can see the path of flow is up and sideways instead of it all just flowing up.
2002: Definitely overlock dude. You can get some SERIOUS gains for like no effort. 2022: It takes an overclock world record holder tweaking and tuning basically every setting to squeeze even 5% gains out of the components. Overclocking is essentially dead.

He's like a humble giant, and with high tech knowledge :) it was relaxing to see him on video. Great video!
Isn't the lack of side panel actually a disadvantage in this case? I mean, with that many fans surely the airflow must be superb and actually required to evacuate the hot air properly
thats what i was thinking
If they both have side panels off it is at least fair comparison
Not really due to convection and having that much open space for air to escape , any hot air will naturally rise up and out of the case no fans needed , while if your limited to just one fan and the toatall pressure of the case pulling exhaust heat , it will accumulate faster due to those restrictions in airflow
@@lucidx2 convection isn't doing anything with that much airflow. What I could see happening is more of the air coming off the GPU being sucked in by the CPU cooler, because the air from the intake fans is escaping out the side instead of forcing it out the back of the case.

You should've kept the side panel on the Splave for better results. In a closed environment the fans can suck much more fresh air over the CPU/GPU coolers.
[citation needed]
Doubt it, components usually run at their peak in open air. Cases serve to protect the parts of the PC, and case fans are there to mitigate the side effect of heat buildup. With the side panel off the GPU can be exhausting its heat directly out of the case while the bottom fans feed it fresh air. They should have kept the side panel on though, but for the opposite reason, because the components are probably running cooler than normal with it off.
Source?
Source: Trust me bro.
"I made it the fuck up!"

@@tinitis4144 You're concern over battery replacement is a good thing for them to test.
maybe you have to watch linus as long as i have in order to get the jokes.. but, they're not ACTUALLY recommending to get a UPS. they're saying if you get the Splave PC, which they low-key don't recommend, because, Linus mentioned 4 times about not liking the cooler in it, and also low-key mentioned that aside from the top-binned silicon, it's essentially the same as their machine, only 5% faster.... you could get 5% faster than stock just by using EVGA precision X OC and upping your video card a bit... so, i mean, 5% is literally nothing in terms of overclocking performance.

I was able to get about 25% extra performance from it with a custom bios flash. Nowadays it’s all about low temps. It’s strange that water cooling wasn’t chosen here.

Its hilarious how Splave makes Linus look so much smaller than the usual LTT employees. Id be all hands on deck for Linus bringing him on as their "overclocker". Plus Splaves social interactions with the group reminds me of how my brother is with people. A mountain yet wholesome. Im a big boi myself but im an asshole.
Literally or figuratively? Or both?
Looks pretty dope.
Always nice seeing some over-the-top comparisons.
I know this was a series you guys hinted at a while back but all these 'ghost' computer problems and troubleshooting. There is something there but it's probably so hard to pin down and articulate in a video especially for ppl who don't understand the weird computer glitches between hardware, software, and multiple devices
I'm glad to see the Fractal Torrent getting more recognition, such an amazing case. By far my favorite.
