Glad you enjoyed it - it's one of my fave brit comedies. Yes, that was Barty Crouch Snr, but he's far more well known for other things here. If you watch an episode of Only Fools and Horses then you'll see him in his most well known role as Trigger (Trig). Incidentally, Only Fools was the show Alice said was more entertaining than the vicar's previous sermon (when they were decorating the tree).
On a side note, did you guys have a show called Gladiators in the 90s? It feels like something we might have copied. When Hugo was doing the refereeing of the sprout contest he was mimicking the ref from that show.
Do you have Christmas crackers in the US? They are always filled with really terrible jokes. Im sure the space man joke has been circulating for at least 25 years now.

Emma Gwynedd Mary Chambers (11 March 1964 - 21 February 2018) was an English actress. She was known for playing the role of Alice Tinker in the BBC comedy The Vicar of Dibley and Honey Thacker in the film Notting Hill (1999).
On 21 February 2018, Chambers died from natural causes at her home in Lymington. The proximate cause of death was a heart attack. She was 53 years old.
On 26 February 2018, BBC One aired The Vicar of Dibley January 1998 episode "Love and Marriage" in Chambers' memory. In similar vein, on 11 March 2018 (what would have been Chambers' 54th birthday), the Goldchannel hosted a The Vicar of Dibley day in her memory.

One foot in the grave is also a great comedy. Sadly it's also a BBC one.

Your correct that was Barry crouch sr, better known as the late great roger Lloyd pack whom played trigger in only fools. He nailed every comic performance he had
Also to note Emma chambers who played Alice sadly passed away last year, she also was very funny in what she was in

Geraldine Granger was based on a real person - CofE's first female Vicar, and Dibley is based on that town. Women ministers was a new thing in the UK in the 90s and I can remember it in the news!
Something sad is that the woman who played Alice (also in the film Notting Hill) died recently of a rare illness. She was still pretty young :(

Tears of laughter watching this again, I was about 13 when it first aired. So many memories. Gotta love Jim, no, no, no, Yes!

Just to occured to me that the actor who played Owen (whom you recognised from Harry Potter) is in both Only Fools & Horses AND Doctor Who, both shows referenced in this episode.

Yes spot on that was Barty Crouch Snr. But you missed that the man asking her to marry him was Peter Capaldi of Dr Who, Local Hero and The Thick of It fame. But you probably only know him as Dr Who.

I had forgotten some of those jokes and how the first lunch went, so I was laughing along with taffe in some places. About half the main cast are no longer with us, which seems strange for a show that began in the 90s, rather than something like Dad's Army, but there you go. Frank was one of my favourites, because I admired his dedication to his work and his blissful ignorance of those who would call him dull. John Bluthal played him very sympathetically, he was very good and will be missed.

Thank you soo much for doing Dibley. It's one of those sitcoms that is funny but also makes ya feel all warm inside.

It's quite sad that the woman who played Alice died so so young! She was one of the people who made that show so great!! I haven't actually seen that episode so it was a giggle for me too! Might have to record a few episodes as they're always on

It is Bertie crouch senior and dawn French played the fat lady in the portraits in the later Harry Potter films too :) oh and bonus fact the Scottish guy getting married was a younger Dr who, Peter capaldi:)

Hi Noah, yes, one of many good sitcoms I grew up with, sadly new ones in the U.K. are less likely. The actor John Bluthal, I first remember seeing in the late `60`s, in a sitcom called "Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width" about a partnership in a tailor`s shop. One being Catholic & the other Jewish (played by John Bluthal).
He appeared in many other comedies including as a co-star in Spike Milligan`s Q Series. Always enjoyed his work. R.I.P. John, Emma, Liz & Roger all wonderful performers of their craft.

Just watched this one. It's a very different take on the standard English comedy, far more wholesome. It's like the opposite of Blackadder. It is unfortunate the order you've done these reactions in, otherwise you'd have gotten more of the references.
