Vicar of Dibley is not for every one. I think I only saw 1 full episode in its entire existence. It's VERY "family friendly" Sunday afternoon type comedy. Dawn French is ex-alternative comedy scene (French & Saunders etc) but she went a very mainstream route later on. It's kinda "charming" in its own run of the mill kinda way. ...but whatever floats people's boat. :)
The whole premise of this series is that it started just after the Church of England allowed women to become vicars for the first time - so the whole idea of having a woman vicar was a novelty.
And that’s not a knock against it. The BBC has been putting out the best television programmes for decades. Compared to whatever garbage is on NBC weeknights, it’s brilliant, but they also done better. I grew up on Britcoms.
It’s a decent sitcom but not one of our best, most of the characters only have one gimmick. It also went on too long, the early episodes are better than the later ones. I think, on the whole, you’ll enjoy it as long as you don’t expect too much.
RIP to the cast, Dawn French and James Fleet (Hugo) are the only ones still with us.

One of the greatest comedy for sure. Richard Curtis has written some classics. This one is full of so many brilliant characters.

What makes this show very clever is the fact it was released in the same year the Church of England ordained women as priests for the first time
The following year, I went to a wedding ordained by a female vicar and she actually looked a lot like Dawn French.

This show was good, but very "safe". Father Ted dealt with similar topics but was much better, because it took more risks.
