"Lying in bed would be an altogether perfect and supreme experience if only one had a colored pencil long enough to draw on the ceiling". Gilbert K. Chesterton Thank you lindsay,so awesome.Colored pencils,a great art medium.❤👌😊👍
There have been quite a few reviews on these pencils and the old ones were complained about due to their soluble qualities so they’ve changed the formula.
I enjoy all your videos. I am a colored pencil artist and even though I don't use any of the other products you use, I thoroughly enjoy listening to you. You are so upbeat and fun.
It turns out I have the old 72 box you were talking about. Now I have water soluble and wax/oil color pencils and they dissolve pretty well . Who would have thought. Thank you so much for this video, Lindsay 💕
I have all kinds of pencils sets that I did not like so they were in the closet. I wanted something new while I am stuck at home. I took out Crayola, Guang Hui and Marcos. After I sharpened the pencils and tried them on every piece of paper I owned. Well, was I in for a surprise. With the right paper these pencils turned into soft, smooth and pigmented good pencils. I challenge everyone to try those put away pencils and try them again. I have new art supplies and I did not have to go anywhere or buy more pencils.
Good to know! If you want the color to cover the white of the paper, you get it with one set and then any color pencils can be used. It’s like using the Derwent inktense for the base.
I'll a total nerd when it comes to anything pigment related! I wish I could get a life do-over! I would totally go into pigments chemistry and child psychology. totally thank you for resetting swatching or generally playing with colors of any type!!!! 😘
I have the 72 set and I bought them just after my birthday in January I think and they dissolve quite a lot. I was pleasantly surprised by that actually. I love using watercolour pencils, so I don't mind that they are to some extent water soluble.
I am glad someone compared the Old Arteza wax pencils to the watercolor Arteza pencils. I tried the Old Arteza pencils and had a love-hate relationship. They seem to work well and then I would struggle to blend with them etc. They seem best for layering not just coloring one or two coats. They also would leave bits of pencil on the paper. I finally returned them but purchased the watercolor pencils. The difference is very noticeable is they are smoother to color with and no bits left on the paper. They seem to blend better as well. As you said that they dissolve great and are very vibrant.
I don't even have Arteza pencils yet but found your video very interesting. Makes me know to check any and every brand now just in case. Like you said it may not be a nice surprise with mixed media.
Thanks for this one Lindsay, I'm pretty sure I watched it when you first posted it, but I didn't comment. It was great to come back and watch it again with all the furore around at the moment. I look forward to watching your new video when arteza gets back to you again
Kmart has their own watercolour pencils that are $5 Australian dollars for twelve and they dissolve really well and are pretty pigmented. I compared them to my mum's Albrecht Durers and they were pretty similar. Thanks for the video!
Sounds wonderful. Being anywhere close to your mums that’s really nice. I wonder if the American Kmart uses the same manufacturer. I have some cheap children’s quality plain colored pencils that are very disappointing but if they can dissolve in the slightest they will redeem themselves in my eyes. LOL. I’m excited to try now. Hope you enjoy your watercolor pencils. 🥰 🦘
Interesting! I guess I'm one of those nerds that likes this kind of thing. I like just getting out similar supplies and seeing what they will do. Like testing out texture and molding pastes to see which ones work the best if you add pigment to them, etc. It's fun!
The internal mom struggle is real: trying to film and someone starts vacuuming and you want them to stop, but at least someone besides you is vacuuming so you don't want to tell them to stop. This was really interesting though!
It's a neat effect if you want them to do it. Unfortunately, I figured it out when I didn't want it to happen. I now test out any colored pencils that I have. It seems like a lot of the brand's made in China do it but The old Arteza pencils dissolve the most.
Hello Lindsey and friends. Very informative video thank you. I purchased the 120 set in January this year and after testing my swatch sheet I found that they are water soluble. I chatted with Arteza over the web and they said it was due to the new formula; a combination of oil and wax. After watching several videos that report different responses from the company, I am now certain that the CSR I chatted with may not have known how to handle the call and spoke out of turn. Not appropriate; however, Bottom line, the pencils are great. I like them and would have just wanted to know that they dissolve in water before buying them to make a better informed decision. I have the 48 watercolor set from two years ago which I also like, and really wanted a large, traditional color pencil set. I hope this was helpful information. Best wishes to all.
I would never complain if someone was vacuuming my house w/o me having to fight with them about it. Teenagers🙄 I have the Arteza watercolor pencils but the Prisma wax ones. I’m not sure I would be happy to find out my “wax” pencils were water soluble. Great video!
My old Arteza set is water soluble I checked some other pencils . I found the Black Widow pencils are also water soluble. Putting down a bit of water instead of Gamsol smoothes everything out nice.
I have bought colored pencils thinking they were water soluble and they were not... that was disappointing. This is a new art journey for me so information like this is great! Thanks neighbor. I am hoping once this darn distancing is over to take a class from you... in person! Thanks for the info... Laura m🦋
I went to the Arteza site and all the smaller sets of colored pencils are sold out. Wonder if they are changing the pencils, so are letting the old stock sell out before introducing the new. This was really interesting. I love your comparisons, learning about pigments and the why and how of art supplies as well as the creative side. edited to add: Swatched out a bunch of colored pencils. The ones made in the Czech Republic (Koh i Noor and Blick) and Germany (Staedtler ergo soft) did not bleed until I scrubbed with lots of water, and then just a faint shadow. The Prismacolor pencil, oddly enough, bled a little with only a moderate amount of water and no scrubbing. The Marco Raffine, which I believe are from China, were quite water soluble. Nice to know.
Thanks for sharing this info. I bought my 72 set of Arteza CP's about a year ago; sure enough, they are water-soluble. (Mixed feelings about that, since I also bought their watercolor ones...)
That is pretty cool. I think I bought the set with the red trays. I have them overseas now. I might have to double check my order. I think that is a neat feature that the old ones essentially work for both.
Thanks Lindsay. Supplises! Excellent word.😁 hmmmm the Arteza wc pencils look really good. I need to go back in your playlist and look up wc pencil reviews . I'm due for a set .👍💜💜💜
Another colored pencil nerd here :) I found this highly interesting. If you know your pencils have both qualities it`s great but if I learned that after spilling some water on my project by accident, I`d be very, very upset. Great info, Lindsay. Life really is like a box of chocolates... You never know what you`ll discover next. LOL
arteza doesnt even tell us the change smh I'm glad they're actually waterproof now i have much more use for waterproof pencils but WTF the change outta nowhere , people that found use for the water soulable properties are gonna get a suprise in the 120 set
I am discovering with the more supplies I review that newer companies that quality changes over time and different size sets are sometimes different products (sometimes made in different factories)
I don’t get these new comps not being forthcoming with their information, how do they expect us to trust them and buy their products when they’re a wild gamble 😔
@@nessaillus you are right, it is a gamble because they have to source their products from around the globe rather than invest in experts to manufacture them in house like the big expensive art companies do (or used to, some companies send their recipies to Chinese factories to have them made cheaper and that's one reason we have been able to score some great cheap supplies as the factories know how to make better paint.) You can always choose the tried and true, you will pay more but you can be sure if you order them again you will get the same thing. I use the tried and true brands for work I may sell or want to keep forever but I'll try anything in a sketchbook.
@@thefrugalcrafter i agree with you for sketchbooks everything goes if it's cheap 👌 my favourite is definitely kids brands there's some really great ones with good pigment and they're cheap so no fear in using them 💪🔥
TBH, I was a tad disappointed that you didn't try some blending with the pseudo-watercolors. Still, I'll bet they'd be awesome when you layer two colors and munge them into one with some water. Also, keeping it real, it's why I'm here! Thanks Lindsay ;-).
This would tick me off...if I bought NON watercolor pencils I certainly wouldn't expect them to move. What happens if you try to use a sealant? Wouldn't they melt & blur? So...the newer ones are ok? I've been looking at these & now I am not sure. Thank you, Lindsay!! I always appreciate your expert opinion! Bless
Well, I think there is a 3rd pencil set now. My 120 set from 2019 is not water reactive but some people report me 2020 sets being water reactive. I dont spray my work usually so I never had an issue with the old ones but another youtuber had an issue spraying a coloring page and he had the brand new set. You might want to hold off buying these.
Check out the video of the fellow who had a negative experience with Arteza - the 'new' pencils versus the 'old' runny pencils! He documented the communications he had with the company. Kinda ridiculous that the company didn't keep track of which version was which!!
Not boring at all Lindsay, good to know if you have the old regular pencils and the watercolour pencils and want to keep some of your marks and use watercolour pencils as well, not sure if that makes sense? Thankyou, stay safe x
Hi Lindsay, I have the Arteza expert set. I tried #89 and it didn't mix with water at all. I tried the premium (triangular barrel) and it didn't do much either.
hi Lindsay, not boring at all!! i don't have any Arteza pencils (yet) lol. I checked your Amazon link for the pencil case you have and couldn't find it-maybe you could show us ;-) i just received an order of Arteza retractable gel pens-24 colors~Arteza meatllic gel pens-14 colors~ and Arteza coloring books-6.4x6.4 size. i LOVE to color and think i will really enjoy the small size pages of these Arteza color books. i do enjoy using color pencils, but, due to pain in hand/shoulder, i use more pens and markers these days, and i love using retractable ones. i'm wondering if my pens and various markers would fit in the case you have, or are they better suited for just pencils? if your thinking about another helpful video to share, i would love one on your pencil case :-) thanks so much for being here, sharing, and always inspiring me!!
How can you tell what version you will get? Are all the water soluble ones in 72 sets? What about other current reviews of “new” 120 sets that breakdown? Inquiring minds want to know😉
WoW Lindsay, I just happened upon this video and when you said the Arteza colored pencils move with water, i was like “yes”. I recently colored stamps with them on Michaels 110lb Recollections paper and then I wanted to add some shimmer. So I tried to apply some of the crafters companion clear sparkle pen and to my SURPRISE” the color was moving. I was horrified because I had just spent hours coloring bunch of stamps and fussy cut the and putting a card together. I had to find alcohol markers to fix the color that was wiped away. I don’t use my Arteza colored pencils often, so was trying to use them and they act like watercolor pencils. I don’t know if I’m happy about it or disappointed. But thank you for confirming the fact the old colored pencils do move.
Just came from Harry’s review to rewatch as I saw it the first time but had forgotten. Very interesting what’s going on, but I’m glad the truth is coming out, especially as ppl may be able to afford only one set and at $78 that is not a budget pencil imo. Love all your content, even if I watch it several times! 😁
I think I bought my Arteza pencils within the last year. Now I'm wondering which ones I have. Edited to add: My 72 set are water soluable. Now that I have them out, I'm going to have to play! I would never have noticed that! Thank you, Lindsey! I loved the video, too. Love color 89! So, why did they change the pencil? And, I have to ask, which case do you use? I'm so glad your pencils still spark joy for you!
Actually this has been so useful. I have been looking into getting some more good colouring pencils and so the older ones that can do some watercolour would be better for me. If not I will have to invest in the "new wax" ones and the watercolour set as well haha. Thanks for the review :) x
I bought the original set when they first came out. I’m not sure how I found out they were water soluble. I made a video about it. No one watched .. That being said, be wary there is a vast difference between ‘ water soluble’ pencils & ‘water color ‘ pencils .. ~ I was surprised that Arteza didn’t know.. And now I’m surprised that the next edition of regular Arteza’s are NOT water soluble. 🧐 Good to know.. I wonder what the difference is ( if any) between color saturation ? And I wonder if the Art Gear guy ( UK reviewer ) discovered this secret .. 🤫
I went to watch your video but it's not there. Looks like you watch some of the same channels I do and similar subject matters. (many of my playlists are private)
So any idea if they've changed the formula since? I actually prefer non water soluble. I have watercolor pencils already but I want something to use with other media that I don't wanna have to worry about coming up
Damn Lindsay you took me for a spin XD I'm aiming to get some closure with their costumer support so I feel comfortable investing my money on these pencils 😊
I got Arteza color pencil set based on good reviews. Colour payoff is amazing, they are quite soft etc. But for some reason I hate working with them. I am used to Polychromos where I can build layers of layers, of layers. With Arteza ... they feel a bit like wax crayons. There is so much wax in them, that it makes it impossible to layer different colors on top of each other. It all leads to muddy mess. I have them for 6 months now and they must be my least used color pencils. I tried to give them a chance multiple times, but no, they are not for me. I prefer Brutfuner over them by a lot.
Great video Lindsay! 😊 can you tell me what kind of pencil sharpener you are using? The handheld one in this video, it looked like it worked really well! Thank you😊
wax isn't normally water soluble. this was interesting. If I expected it to resist water I would be upset if it ruined a piece when I added water. Now we have to test all pencils for water-proofness. I remember reading a comment on one of the art channels that was upset with Arteza because they claimed that Arteza would bypass the usual Advertising and Marketing costs by sending free product to artists, and then the artist reviews it on their YT channel. Then they claimed or implied that the formula for the product would change after people bought them based on a review. Since when have marketers ever told the truth first of all? And it is a good way to save money and pass on the savings to the customer, as well as targeting your audience. But if they truly are changing the formulation of the products to make them LOWER quality, that is a problem. People will buy based on a review and get a different product. If you have an older video reviewing your older set of pencils, you may want to put a link to this one in the description.
Good idea, I have an old review for them. I think it is more the case of the factory they hired to make them changing their recipe. I'd say the quality is equal, it was just an odd thing.
Well it looks like the old Artezas are surfacing again. I seen a couple of youtube videos of this happening to other people today. There testing the pencils and they run with the water added to them and want Arteza to give them a new set because there not happy with them.
Do you know if the old or new Arteza colored pencils are more lightfast than the other. I worry about lightfastness even though my art is unlikely to adorn the walls of a museum!
Wow only 8 views so far I am early and I found this helpful! I do not have arteza but know someone who does have their colored pencils I only have their paints and canvases!
😂 Just found this! So c. 2018 and before Artezas ("old") were water-soluble? And then 2019s were wax (as they should be)? And then *_late 2020s went back to water-soluble?_* (I'm the one who has the new _smelly watercolor pencils_ (48 ct), but besides the floppy trays and probably-pencil-coating smell, the pigment is fine). That's why I stick with Prismas: I know what I'm getting. My open stocks I repurchased a decade ago, though the font text was less "flashy", are consistent. (I can't SEE the new Prisma pencil numbers so well because for some idiot reason, they now use a glaring metallic background with a pencil number in the metallic! I have to take pictures and ZOOM, and with the 4-number pencils, desaturate the picture, to see the pencil number! The old way, stamping the pencil number in metallic on the barrel color, was great. I have a vision issue which requires dark glasses, so not being able to see the pencil numbers was pretty annoying. But I didn't switch because they're the same product: no unhappy surprises!)
Hello Lindsay, I was wondering if I could find out some info about your micron pens? I had asked you about them on a previous video, but I guess I had asked too late for you to see comment. Thanks for everything. Take care and God bless you and yours. Sincerely Becky B from Arkansas
This was interesting, not boring! Please don’t worry about a little noise from upstairs! It makes us feel at home!😀
I wish I had that problem of someone else doing housework 😁

There have been quite a few reviews on these pencils and the old ones were complained about due to their soluble qualities so they’ve changed the formula.
The barrel of the old 72 Artza set is smaller than the ones from the 120 set. I took my husbands caliper to it.

Its from arteza:)
Actually this has been so useful. I have been looking into getting some more good colouring pencils and so the older ones that can do some watercolour would be better for me. If not I will have to invest in the "new wax" ones and the watercolour set as well haha. Thanks for the review :) x
I always find your videos entertaining! :)
Thank you so much! After seeing how arteza treat people who are honest, I won't be purchasing supplies from them in future.
I haven't had a problem with the people at Arteza and I've posted some good and bad reviews.
I have an older and new set of the 48 and like yours, my older one activates in water.
Thinking about all the people who spend hours in coloring books for adults, if they are using the old ones and their work gets wet, they'll be mad
I love color pencils.
I assume the old ones have the black trays and the new ones are red?
That's how mine are
Very interesting!
So any idea if they've changed the formula since? I actually prefer non water soluble. I have watercolor pencils already but I want something to use with other media that I don't wanna have to worry about coming up
I have no idea,my most recent is 2019 of this brand. You could get an open stock box of 3 to test them.
I was wundering how to hold them right way?
Are the watercolor ones effected too?
Im not sure about the newest line they have produced but mine are great!
I think I’d rather have the old ones, but still not gonna beat my Inktense pencils.
Always has me kranky watching old vs new and then knowing the old ones are not available, hehehe, sorry :P
The new ones have a little bit thicker barrel too
Great video Lindsay! 😊 can you tell me what kind of pencil sharpener you are using? The handheld one in this video, it looked like it worked really well! Thank you😊
It was by Color-it, it's a great sharpener!
Awesome thank you😊
wax isn't normally water soluble. this was interesting.
Nerd no ??? Here 😂. I want the two different types now the old and the new so that I can test them!!!
Well it looks like the old Artezas are surfacing again. I seen a couple of youtube videos of this happening to other people today. There testing the pencils and they run with the water added to them and want Arteza to give them a new set because there not happy with them.
there will be some ghost pigment staining with wax based pencils, but it looks like there have reduced the problem with these now , tfs
Do you know if the old or new Arteza colored pencils are more lightfast than the other. I worry about lightfastness even though my art is unlikely to adorn the walls of a museum!
I think they take them the same. I am leery of trusting lightfast ratings from newer brands that dony list the standard they conform to.
Wow!
Wow only 8 views so far I am early and I found this helpful! I do not have arteza but know someone who does have their colored pencils I only have their paints and canvases!
Who knew?!!😯. Very cool!
Have you, or would you, do a watercolor pencil tutorial?!
I have several on my channel:)
So do u like the new ones??
Well, I actually like both sets I have but there is an even newer formulation that I can't speak to.
I have used a couple of brands, micron and bianyo, that lasted pretty well.
I don't get this video, there not watercolour pencils
That's the point. They are not watercolor test one version reacts with water and the other doesn't.
Hi
