I know this is a year old video, but you’ve no idea how handy this was for me today. I actually ordered the square ones for £24 thinking they were better than the round, so I’ve canceled the order and ordered the round ones instead for £17 😂😂 blimey, you’ve saved the day. 🥰

Each to his or her own opinion and you shouldn't worry about others not liking your findings or opinions. I, myself, have only the square Brutfuners and I do like them....I'm content to have this one only set and not their other round ones, but that's me. If someone is looking to get more bang for the buck as they say, then go with the round. At then end of the day, it's all to what someone likes and is affordable for them. I liked your video and comparisons - I think it's quite helpful for those looking for a more budget friendly pencil. Gives an insight on the various Brutfuners out there on the market.

Thank you for making this video! I bought the round 120 set with the handle on the box (after watching this video) and I got to test them out today and I was shocked at how nice they were 😮. Pigmented, soft and no broken pencils! a joy to use. I was always unsure about buying the round ones because of all the mixed reviews I’ve seen. Your video was all I needed to finally try out my first ever set of Bruts 😀! Thanks again 😊✏️

Great findings. See a lot of people don’t understand that a lot of the company’s on Amazon who sell budget pencils are private labeled. They all get it from a main factory and then stamp their name on it, change the packaging and change the color of the barrels. But they all come from the same factory. That’s why some people say that some of their pencils look and feel the same. That’s why I don’t buy any art mediums that do not have open stock. Your wasting your money when you just purchase a bunch of pencils that you can’t replace. Your better of saving your money and get brands that have open stock. IMO.

Hurrah! Thank you. I was saying this last year and ‘was shot down in flames’ by other comparison sites (hmm, I wonder why??) I love my Brutfuner however I have brought 3 sets of square pencils. I got them for about £20 a set so no complaints. However, I’ve got an unique reason why when I have problems holding pencils due to Parkinson’s and find I can hold them more securely and not so much strain so price isn’t a consideration as my husband and sons would buy them I’m incredibly lucky.

Back when they were new, I did a swatch and compared the 120 rounds and 120 squares and found them identical pencils. (same colors, different numbers.) I colored a page, 1/2 with each set, and you couldn't tell the difference. I said there wasn't a point in getting the squares. The rounds are just fine and cheaper. I did get a bit of flack from a few people, saying they weren't anything like each other. (I think they were thinking of the 180 set of squares, but I wasn't interested in yet another set of brutfuners to see).
I agree with you, in effect.

Exactly Feath. The 120 rounds and 120 squares are the same. To me, the squares started to feel like The Kings New Clothes. If I had known they were the same, I had stuck with the rounds that I had bought first, I thought they were really good pencils and only bought the squares because everyone was saying how great they were, so assumed they must be even better than the rounds!

Castle Art buys their leads from the same factory as Star Joy did for the Originals, Creyart are from the same factory as Raam Refined and Norberg and Linden, Magicfly and Arteza are made from the same pigments, and Cool bank come from the same factory as Zenacolor. None of the pencils I mentioned are the same formuation so I think they are private labeled rather that white labeled

I have the 120, squares, the 80 set you showed, (think it’s the pastel & neons set) and my brother bought me the 520 Brut’s for Christmas. The 520’s look the same as the rounds, same number style, but they also all have names. The only difference I’ve noticed is really about quality, my 80 Neons and pastel break terribly, they were very cheap, (think about £6,) but some wouldn’t sharpen and I’m left with very little pencil. I’ve had very few issues with the squares, or the 520’s (yet😉) I’d probably always buy the squares, just because I know they are in better packaging, and so more likely to arrive in better condition. I also have the brut macarons, they are super pencils for the money, with some great colours. Bruts generally are great value, at the prices they charge, you really can’t go wrong.👍🏻

None of the Brutfuners are oil based. They have the word "oily pencils" as a misnomer (or just a bad translation). In China any non-watercolour pencils containing wax or oil are labelled 'oily' which just means they contain wax or oils and are not watercolour pencils.
With regard to the black barrel Brutfuners, I remember at the time of making this video that I was surprised how nice they were... easy laydown, soft and blendable. As much as I liked the first Brutfuners I bought (the 120 round), I found I was using the black barrels more.
I was planning on making a follow-up video to this, comparing all the colours of pencils across the sets and I also got in contact with the manufacturer of the Brutfuner pencils and they sent me samples etc. However, I got so much backlash from people who love the squares and are insistent that they are not the same as the rounds... that I didn't end up making the video. Maybe I will this year?
With regard to the 72 Macarons, I have them! They weren't available at the time of making this video so maybe that's the reason to do the follow-up video!

@@ArtJourneyUK thank you for responding, many do not respond on older videos :) Yes, please do more Brutfuner reviews! I am glad to have your opinion. I have been confused by all the videos on the square Brutfuners, but I do not see most of them comparing to the round Brutfuner. Sorry you received backlash. I think many of us want to hear Different Opinions :) I do feel the Black Barrel (these are only Brutfuner I have) color differently than budget waxed based pencils though ? I have other supposedly oil based like Marco Renoir and some others (can't remember all of them now) which I prefer, unless it is just a preconceived idea LOL. I only have the black barrel and like them, but found few reviews and those that did said they were inferior. I do like hard pencils LOL, I love crayola too. I do have Prismas and Polychromos and many more, but prefer the Polychromos. I saw some good reviews on the macarons comparing to Holbein etc, but would love your reaction. A few days ago I purchased The Castle Art Gold 120 and was only planning on this set, but the website had a good sale, plus I got a 30% off coupon from the roulette wheel 🤣 and you get free shipping over $75.00 so I added the 48 pasteltint and 48 metallics, all 3 sets in zipper Case for total of $76.97! On Amazon. just the 120 Gold set in Case is $79.99 plus 10% off coupon! So I was leaning towards the Brutfuner Macarons, but purchased the Castle Art anyway.

In another video I have seen a comparison among two types of round Brutfuner. One, called as studente grade, has only the numbers and a smaller core (abt 3), the other set , called flower box set, has a larger core (ABT 3,8), has a name and a number etched in the wood and not very visible. In the video it was told that the latter is better. Do you know something about? Hi from Genova

After having that virus, the smell of the black barrel is unbearable to me but the square doesn't have that smell. I loved the black barrel, so my question is do the colored round barrels have the chemical smell like the black barrels? I thought it might be the tin so I took them out and that didn't help so I think it may be the lacquer on the barrel.

    • @ArtJourneyUK

Hi Melissa, I know what you mean about the black barrelled smell. Mine stayed smelling that way while they were stored in the tin. Once I put them in a case, the smell dissipated.
With regards to the coloured round barrelled ones, I don’t remember any smell on them at all. But tomorrow, I’ll go open the new box of them I have and check 😊

I had them all together sorting them…I gave up…The 80 set are the worst for breakage and although they are a mixture of neons and pastel they are different from the pastels in the 50 set and neons from the 520 set…I was driving everyone mad as it should have been easy to match…Imagine 900 pencils approx on my rug… I have bought a very big carousel that hold 700+ pencils…🤣🤣

Aha thanks for saying this, so many people say the squares are softer than all the rest and I don't believe they are. Love this. Have you watched Lori Green’s channel? She was sent hundreds of oil cores from China so she could pick out 120 colors for the new Star Joy Gold set. The factory adds a wood casing of varying shapes, different paint schemes for the barrel but in the end inside it’s the same core. I wonder if there are a limited number of pre made oil cores available for purchase in China from an unknown manufacturer in 800 or so colors. Legacy companies make pencils from scratch from the core outward but the cheap Chinese pencils are assembled. This makes them faster to produce and much cheaper. I bet the cores in the Brutfuner are the same as in the Star Joy Gold (but of course this is just a guess).
My favorite pencils are the soft wax from Black Widow. They appear to be unique. Wonder where he gets his cores? Problem is the Chinese owners don’t speak English so they can’t explain anything. I don’t think they even know what’s in the pencil cores.

      @polarbearhero9803 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have the Deli and Star Joy Gold and they are two different pencil cores. When you tap on the cores the vibrations through the two brands are different. Prefer the quality of the Deli cores but like the SJGold colors more. The only other sets I have are wax with all 180 of the Black Widow- my favorites also made in China.
Take a look at all the cores Lori Green has left from the work she did on Star Joy Gold. Apparently you can order cores of differing types, quality, diameter and color and choose how you want to “clothe” those cores with custom color schemes, shapes and sizes of the wood barrel, and types of wood. How many different parameters of a pencil can you change in the Chinese market? We saw all the choices Lori was given to chose from. She put it up to a vote in her YT group. The result was a unique pencil. Arnold in Australia picked other attributes and came up with the Black Widows.
If you had the investment money, you could pick and choose your own features and sell your own unique pencils. Look at all the types of pencils manufactured in China today! A few new brands even have bar codes on the barrel that infer they will be sold open stock (eg. Arrtex). They also infer a degree of lightfastness. Wish I knew what types of cores were available particularly of the oil pencils.

Many years ago, I purchased the Guang Hui coloured pencils on Amazon Canada. There were a set of 160 pencils. When I saw the Brutfuner pencils they looked exactly the same as my Guang Hui pencils. Pencils that are made in China most of the pencil brands are made from the same manufacturer. All you need to do is choose the colour of the cores and have your own name put on the barrel of the pencil. I hope that answers any questions about Chinese-made pencils. They are all the same pencil core but with a different name. These pencils are good for Johanne Basfords colouring books. I own all the professional pencils but did not perform as well as my Guang Hui pencils on cardstock colouring books. The pencil needs to be matched to the paper to achieve good artwork.

I don't know what the big hoopla is with this Brutfuner pencils because at least here in the US you can find many different inexpensive set of pencils of very similar quality. I only tried the square ones, because everyone said they are softer than the round ones and for my hand I like the softer ones. Also they said it's more comfortable to hold. Well, yes they are more comfortable and nice and smooth and soft, but terribly crumbly. No matter how many times i tried and I don't push the pencils hard, they were just terribly crumbly. So I gave them away. I don't know how the round ones are because I never tried them, and I don't mean the black ones, the coloredybarrel ones, but still up to this day in other reviews they say they have a much harder core than the square ones. You are the first one who says they are the same. So I don't know which one is which, I just know there was so much talk about them, good and bad. I was not interested anymore and especially when they came out with 520 that just sounded ridiculous. I personally go for quality not quantity. Also I agree in these budget pencils different brands could actually be the same, not just colors but numbers too. They are made in the same factory then they sell them under different names. Not right.

Very True Judith. I found the square & round the same, definitely all churned out the same factory.

Is there a difference between 180 black barrels and rounds?

The tin box is more expensive than the plastic one. I’m perfectly happy with my 72 set of square brutfuners. Got them for about $10

@darialvova6355 it is now, my tin was under £20 back when I bought them... and the squares were £24! Enjoy yours! 🥰

sarah renae clark did a video on the squares vs the black rounds, and she did notice/show a clear difference between them 🤔 I'm confused 😆

    • @ArtJourneyUK
      @ArtJourneyUK  ปีที่แล้ว

Well they're all made in the same factory, but you'll only know for certain if you try them both yourself

That actually makes sense. I don't have the black-barrelled Brutfuners, but I do have the 174 black-barrelled Shuttle Arts, which I believe are the same pencils, and they're soft, smooth pencils that feel softer than the color-barrelled Brutfuners that I have. If the color-barrelled Brutfuners are the same as the square Brutfuners, but the black-barrelled Brutfuners are softer, then Sarah Renae's review wouldn't be wrong either. I love them both, but think I prefer the firmer color-barrelled ones a little (just ever so slightly) more.

Is it weird that 43 is also my favorite color in my Brutfuner? It's really a nice green for leaves. I also have it sharpened too small now 😂

Yep, perfect for leaves. 43 is the reason I bought a second box in the first place... not look at me! 😅

I bought the round ones off Amazon in the US. I don't know if it was a quality issues or shipping issue but the leads keep breaking on me. One I've had to sharpen about half way before it started not breaking. I'm wondering if the square ones have the same issue or if their thicker leads keep this from happening as bad.

Sounds like someone dropped the box! I have 4 sets of round ones and none of them suffer with breakages. You should return the pencils for a replacement!

Is it just the packaging that says Litchitree? I've got the same Brutfuner Pencils in a Brutfuner box and in a Litchitree box before.

Just now wanted to purchase a tin of Brutfuner 180 off Amazon. There were two different prices and when I look closer (the tins are the same black with elephants), one tin said Kalour and the other tin has no name on the outside. All other information on the tins are the same. Also the same are the pencils, barrels fully coloured the colour of the lead. NO black barrels. What is going on?

Same factory, different distributors. These are the ones I like:- amzn.to/3U476Wk Branded Laconile, but are in fact Brutfuner
