7838 was destroyed in the Panhandle wreck on June 28, 2016. I took this video on February 6, 2016. Prayers continue for the families of the three crewmen that lost their lives
Hearing these running in notch 8 up the Blue Cut Grade at Cajon Pass was absolutely incredible when I went for the first time in early 2022. I had to cover my ears, it was so loud!
This unit #7838 was destroyed in the Panhandle in 2016, only the frame was left, the body, cabin, engine were all ripped out on impact, it was scrapped at the accident site, unfortunately 3 railroad workers died in this tragedy
Sorry to hear this. As railroaders I am sure they would be honored to carry on the railroad with joy. As a modeler as well. Meanwhile I love listening to that diesel engine. Go GENERAL ELECTRIC. ( GE) 👍👋👋👋👋👋This is for the engineer crew & you the maker of this video. 🎥👍✅⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
No, not really. They are testing the locomotive under an artificial load. This is done by feeding the power put out by the generator into the dynamic brake resistor grids. This creates a resistance on the generator, which makes the diesel engine work harder. This allows the techs to see that the engine can be "loaded" without having to send it out onto the road.
THE LOAD TEST IS WHERE THE TRACTION MOTORS ARE DISCONNECTED AND THE OUTPUT OF THE TRACTION GENERATOR/ALTERNATOR IS DIRECTED TO THE DYNAMIC BRAKE RESISTORS OR A LOAD BOX! THE ENGINE THEN CAN BE RAN AT FULL SPEED AND HORSEPOWER TO DETERMINE PROPER HORSEPOWER PARAMETERS AND INSPECT THE ENGINE FOR LEAKS AND OTHER PROBLEMS!
It’s an engineering test that occurs on…literally anything that serves thousands of people. It tests the new thing with the load you want it to do. But under high stress and long runtime. It’s an attempt to either break it or prove to everyone it works
Watching paint dry would be a step up from watching your pastor preach from a flatbed trailer. With ears that huge hairy I bet got gnomes living in there. Go back under the bridge you crawled out troll
That deep growling rumble of a GEVO-12 is pure music to my ears. Fantastic load test. Thanks for sharing.
I love that sound.

I'm an EMD fan but I can't deny GEVO's sound totally badass💪🏼😎
So ur a cat fan
I can smell the exhaust from here!
That's a nice sweet chug coming from that locomotive
Nothing beats that GE chug.
I know that chugging sound!
The lil engine that could! Child hood story.
Love that sound!

I heard about the wreckage but had no idea this locomotive was in it as well. It's really sad about the crew. Prayers go out to their families
@@josephp.elstad4328 have you caught any of the others? 5416, 7553, 5212, 5162, or 3967?
I'm not sure if I have. I'd have to check
If I were 8, I would have said this at the beginning... "GOOD LAWD WITH ALL THAT SMOKE!!"
At 4:58, what notch is that? I am not a GE fan however that sound there is music to my ears!
Wowwwwww!! That's something you don't see everyday. Nice👍💪👌
Ahh... the sound of Gretta's "little helper"
Nice trainz

Sad that this unit only had about five months left before it was destroyed.
In a load test, what's the load? are they powering a huge bank of resistors or something?
Nice dude you breathe all the good stuff up there! Nice!
Oh go hug a tree!
If I could only make my daily driver sound just like that… 😆
When the engine run to notch 8, this sound is like the motorcycle Harley-Davidson
Tbh not even remotely the same sound
In my opinion, I find it looks like it, even a dull sound

I gave my wife the same job title.
load bank! 1009 rpm’s that is a lotta wet stack! cleaned up nice tho!
so all that smoke at the beginning was just stack build-up getting blown out?
#7838 was involved in the Cactus train collision
Nope! It was destroyed in Panhandle, Texas train collision on June 28th, 2016! And It was retired and scrapped in July 2016.
This V12 is very cool!
I can smell that diesel from my recliner!
Amazing video!
Fantastic smoker
Is the load test just notching up in neutral?
No the reverser is in the forward position 😑😑
I thought 7838 was destroyed in the 2016 panhandle collision
I think he caught Before it was destroyed
They rebuilt it lol

SD 70 sounds sooo much better
Is that engine old enough to smoke?
this engine is fairly new, all engines smoke a little bit
Doesn’t sound like they ever got above maybe notch 5 🤔
What is a load test?
They run the engine to test the electric power to the traction motors or something. It's like charging a battery to see how much power they can get
It’s an engineering test that occurs on…literally anything that serves thousands of people. It tests the new thing with the load you want it to do. But under high stress and long runtime. It’s an attempt to either break it or prove to everyone it works
what a dirty locomotive
All diesel engines smoke a little bit, no matter how new theya are.
