    Nice video, love watching these cars being worked on. I think those round things by the cams are the cam magnets that adjust the variable timing. Funny to see the old style bayonet expansion tank cap on a 97. By that year most w140 had shifted to the round plastic cap.

      Thanks for watching the channel and commenting. Both Iona and Betty have the old school expansion tank caps. I love it. As you said most I’ve been through have the plastic cap. Face palm on the camshaft sensor statement. It’s the magnetic camshaft adjuster. I rewatched the video and great catch.

    thank you for sharing. i have a 1997 S500 with 235 miles that i have had for seven years and i am just starting to pay her some attention. i have swapped out engines and rear ends of domestic vehicles however working on the m119 without your mentoring videos would be more difficult.

    Nicely done video. I've owned a 96' S500 with 235k for the last 20 years. I had my indie change the plugs a few months back. I wish I had swapped out all the coils while he was in there, darn it. I purchased the platinum plugs from FCP and now I wish I had gone with copper. I do have a slight rough idle when cold, otherwise it runs great. This has happened before and cleaning the MAF seemed to help as here in C. FL any silica that gets past the air filter doesn't play well there. You bought platinum plugs, so please post another video if you get some experience running them.

      Thanks so much. I will do when I get the platinum ones in my current project M119. I’m running standard ones in Iona and getting alright MPG the way I drive her hard in town and amazing MPG when I’m in the interstate. 23 to 25 on the interstate and 15 to 18 in town. Let me know if you’ve gotten your high mileage awards from MB. Dying to get Iona 100% and take her to the dealer to have it signed and submitted. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Just found you guys, I own a late 96 S420 short wheel base and am in the process of buying a 97 S500 Long wheel here in Australia. Obviously having a few issues due to lack of serving and or poor maintenance so I am sure you videos will be a great help as these 2 projects come alight. Liked and subscribed

      Thanks for the positive feedback!!! Here's hoping these videos help you with both of your projects. I've never seen a right hand drive W140 in person but many other short and long wheelbase left hand drive versions. Are both of your projects right hand drive W140's or left hand drive? Interested to hear, and thanks for subscribing to the channel.

    Hey man Great video and very informative.
    I have a w140 1997 s420 that needs to new spark plugs and ignition coils.
    I bought the spark plugs and coils from Bosch but I need to buy the tools to work on it.
    Can you please list the tools used for changing the spark plugs?

      Thanks for watching the channel and congrats on having your own W140. I’m thinking through the process and most everything is a basic ratchet handle and extension with a metric set of sockets. You’ll definitely need a spark plug socket in addition to usual and regular sockets. The only real thing that jumps out is the metric Allen head bolts on the coil retainers. I think that’s everything. Good luck, go slow, clean everything, and be easy on yourself if you take a misstep. Cheers and thanks again for watching.

    what is the gap for spark plugs again. I have been changing my the same exact parts but it running rough and just idiel a little.

    • @w140restorations
      @w140restorations  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching the channel and for leaving your comment. The gap depends on what motor you have in your W140. Mercedes Benz specs for the M119 is 0.8mm. With that said there are applications and reasons that one may increase gap to 1.0mm for a hot idle misfire. I’m not recommending it, just sharing that it may be done for specific idle issues since you mentioned it. Make sure to check fuel, air, and compression as these may be the culprit in lieu of spark. Thanks for the comment and for watching the channel. Cheers!

    I wish Mercedes had gone "full Torx/E-torx" (fasteners) on the Motronic M119 as they did on their M113 and later engines. I loathe Allen-head screws.

      Thanks for watching the channel and for leaving your comment! Sounds like you’ve had some time with the maintenance position under a hood or two! I hear you loud and clear. For me, Allen heads give me pause. The idler pulley bolt is the one that’s says “is today the day I need my tap and die set?” when I change them. Thanks again for watching the channel and happy wrenching. Cheers!

    So what do you think 1997 SL two door coupe convertible need lots of work .

    • @w140restorations
      @w140restorations  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching and for the comment/question. It really depends on a lot of factors, namely a clean title with no accidents and engine displacement. The saying “there’s nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes” holds true. For me, anything with a m119 platform is a good starting point for getting to yes. Good luck with your decision and your SL journey.

      Thanks for watching the channel and for the comment. Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your R129. I'm happy to help out the community and love working on these cars. I just picked up my second SL500. Be on the lookout for a new project series about her. Hopefully the new series helps you with your SL500 issues. If you are a stones throw from the Tampa area there are some wonderful social network groups that support each other and some of the members have parts and part cars available.

      Thanks for watching the channel and all my best on your own journey with your W140. I start with the basics like spark plug gap, correct firing order, vacuum leaks, and lose or unconnected electrical components before moving on to components and testing. Maybe a crossed plug wire is to blame, or an unplugged sensor if it wasn’t acting this way before you changed your cap and rotor. Start with those and hopefully the answer reveals itself.

    Great video. I appreciate that people are bringing back the W140's. I was wondering, were you getting a rough idle before you changed out the coils,boots and spark plugs? I have a 99 CL500, and I'm getting a rough idle and misfire on cylinders 2,3,4, swapped coils to the other side, but still getting misfire code. Thxs

      Thanks for watching the channel and thanks for the kind words. Iona was a slow decline in idle and then tremendous rough idle below 1000 rpm and then smoothing out over 2500 plus. Cylinders 4 and 8 were fouled bad and I could take them out with my fingers. For your cylinders on one bank to be bad it may be the camshaft sensor or the camshaft adjuster magnet or both. One bank of fouled plugs leads me to think adjuster magnet since the variable valve timing is on the intake valves only. Wishing you the best of luck working out the problem on your 99 CL500. Happy wrenching and thanks again for watching.
