1996 Mercedes SL500 R129 Project Heidi Part 9: Broken and Shattered Front Bumper Cover Full Repair!
Duct Tape and Bailing Wire on a R129? You bet 'cha. When it comes to R129 Front Bumpers these things are almost always broken or shattered. Welcome back to W140Restorations where we take a deep dive down a rabbit hole filled with different types of plastic welding tools, techniques, and temperatures to wed the Bumper Cover of Heidi with a very broken inner core from a donor vehicle. Its a match made in a recycling yard for long term drivability in the W140 Restorations Garage. We find out aluminum rivets and washers are the way to go putting these back together and a quick tutorial on how to put Bosch Fog Lights back in the bumper rounds out this latest episode of #ProjectHeidi.
It took weeks to finally finish all the plastic welding but it was so very worth it. We use Polypropylene and Polyurethane plastic welding rods to give some structure to a very broken bumper cover and re-use the bumper hangers and hardware to finally get Heidi back together.
Parts used:
Amazon.com plastic welding kit
Polyurethane welding rod
Polypropylene welding rod
Harbor Freight plastic welding iron

What's all that noise under our project SL500? Welcome back to W140 Restorations as we get to the root cause of everything "thumpy" under Project Heidi. This happens to be one of my favorite videos to date as we level up both our editing and videography to show how bad the center support bearing/mid-shaft bearing is on this 1996 R129. We use a lot of science to drop a bearing perfectly on the d...

    Great video! I need to do the exact same thing for our 1997 SL500 R129. It appeared you applied the 3M spray glue only on the hood itself, and not on the back of the pad… directions on the glue states you can do the 2 side method. Did you find that the hood-only works ok? Thanks again for this awesome series on Heidi. 😊

      Thanks for watching the channel and leaving a comment. It works well but has a few spots that have started to sag. Would 100% recommend doing both sides for extra adherence. The hood insulation is missing in the new project SL500 and I will 100% pause to put glue on both sides of the new one. Thanks again for supporting the channel. Cheers!

      Thanks for watching the channel! Hope you like the content. Yes, I posted a video about the disassembly of the headlights in Part 7A. There was so much to do I had to split the video into two parts. Check out episode 7A for how to crack open the Xenon headlights on a R129. Thanks for the comment and keep watching for more episodes. Cheers!

      Thanks for the comment and supporting the channel. Glad the video helps you get your 01 bumper sorted. I found the iron type welder worked wonders and didn’t require a constant trigger pull. Would recommend looking for the plastic stamping marks on yours since the 01 was a third gen version of the R129 and may be different plastics. Let me know when you get into it. Good luck, go slow, and buy the best respirator you can. Cheers!

      Thanks! Happy to be back in the garage and not in airports. Short answer is no. Every time I open the garage doors the replacement seats laugh at me and mock my skills like Waldorf and Statler from the Muppet Show, harassing me from their perches. It’s one of the last few items remaining on Iona. I should probably get to getting and finish the last few things. Stay tuned and cheers!

    Thanks everyone for watching and supporting the channel. I just fired my editor (me) for the dropped audio at the end of Part 9. No clue what happened there. What I said was the 12V is hot to the fog lights, so the bulb is blown. I've got new ones on order. It took weeks and weeks of working with the plastic to put it back together, but it was SO worth it. Each of you with a split R129 bumper can do this very same thing and save a bumper. Thanks for watching, thanks for all the support, and make sure to subscribe to the channel. Cheers everyone!

    My front and rear bumpers need refreshing asap. They are taking away from the overall appearance of the car. Thank you for this video. I plan on repainting the entire car next year. Off topic I see that you own a 1997 S500. My 1997 S500 temperature gauge is not working.I cannot find the single pin coolant temperature gauge sender location in my engine bay to check it. You can park this car next to any - and it will stand out from the crowd and hold its own. The car is finished in the exceptionally rare and desirable brilliant emerald metallic green with beige leather seats and walnut wood grain accents. It will turn heads wherever it goes and gets lots of attention. Is it any wonder why Bruno Sacco said it was “the most perfect car of my career.” . In short, it is at the top of the car-world pecking order -- it represents the ultimate of a motoring masterpiece. This is an out-of-the-box supercar. It has the design pedigree, reliable engineering and enviable looks of the classic Mercedes marquee. Again, “the most perfect car of my career” -- as Bruno Sacco said (Mercedes head designer for over 35 years ).

    • @w140restorations
      @w140restorations หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching the channel and leaving your comment. It was a decision based on many factors including experience, failure rates, mileage, cost, and lifetime warranty exchange with one of my vendors. In the end, if the same one fails it will get replaced with an aluminum upgrade. The work doesn’t bother me. If it ever requires a redo was also considered for making a follow up episode down the road. Thanks again for watching and cheers.

    • @w140restorations
      @w140restorations หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching the channel and congrats on having your own W140. I’m thinking through the process and most everything is a basic ratchet handle and extension with a metric set of sockets. You’ll definitely need a spark plug socket in addition to usual and regular sockets. The only real thing that jumps out is the metric Allen head bolts on the coil retainers. I think that’s everything. Good luck, go slow, clean everything, and be easy on yourself if you take a misstep. Cheers and thanks again for watching.

    what is the gap for spark plugs again. I have been changing my the same exact parts but it running rough and just idiel a little.

    • @w140restorations
      @w140restorations หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching the channel and for leaving your comment. The gap depends on what motor you have in your W140. Mercedes Benz specs for the M119 is 0.8mm. With that said there are applications and reasons that one may increase gap to 1.0mm for a hot idle misfire. I’m not recommending it, just sharing that it may be done for specific idle issues since you mentioned it. Make sure to check fuel, air, and compression as these may be the culprit in lieu of spark. Thanks for the comment and for watching the channel. Cheers!

    I wish Mercedes had gone "full Torx/E-torx" (fasteners) on the Motronic M119 as they did on their M113 and later engines. I loathe Allen-head screws.

      Thanks for watching the channel and for leaving your comment! Sounds like you’ve had some time with the maintenance position under a hood or two! I hear you loud and clear. For me, Allen heads give me pause. The idler pulley bolt is the one that’s says “is today the day I need my tap and die set?” when I change them. Thanks again for watching the channel and happy wrenching. Cheers!

    Nice Job! I too have a 99 s320, in Blue, that’s as clean as yours, I have the same pride of ownership, and love how the car blast down So Cal freeways at 80 Mph, flawlessly while returning 27 MPG and ice cold A/C! No better built car for the money on the planet!.. P.S one hot tip, Joann Fabric sells a wonderful match to the taupe interior headliner material with a thin foam backing, cost me $15 and 8 for spray apoxy and recovered my sunshade myself, looks brand new. Raise the Moonroof up in the Vent position, take out 4 side mount screws, and it comes right out and your sunshade slides right out, and reverse to install fixed slide.. Good luck, smiles and smiles to go!!

      Thanks for watching the channel and leaving a kind comment. Blue and 99 are rare words indeed for a W140, let alone in the same VIN. Congrats. Daily MPG for Iona hits somewhere at 18 mpg or less depending on how hard I punish the pedal. Thanks for the tip on the sunshade. I’ve got to finish mine sooner than later to round out the interior. Thanks again for watching and cheers!

      Thanks for watching the channel and for posting your comment. Parts and Labor manual for R129 says nine hours for flex disk repair. Granted the manuals I have are old, but current rates may differ slightly. Local Dealer rates are approximately $200 per hour around the Tampa Bay Area. That’ll set you back almost two grand just based on book rates alone without parts. Your local Indy should have better rates and not keystone the part costs if you’re lucky. Although pricey the repair should last other 100k miles if you don’t drive like I do. Thanks again for watching and posting your comment.

      @w140restorations 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Didn’t set well with me for nine hours. Looked again. Center support bearing is 3.7 hours and flex disks are 3.3 hours per. 10.3 labor hours for the entire thing or 6.6 for both disks but why not do the bearing while you’re in there.

    Thank you just inherited a 97SL500 that my dad owned since 2000. He did this and that’s along the way but I just did gaskets plugs and coil packs. Radiator hoses and belt were also done so I can drive it confidently. Car has 119k and I know the rear disk was done but down the road this will be great info. Love following your progress as it will be me soon.

      Thanks for watching and for posting this comment. Congrats on having a rare W140 if you’re sending this message from the states. I’m not 100% positive that you can, but there are definitely a few things you will need. Your manual cable seat and adjuster will have to go and you’ll need a seat with a power control module N32/1 for the driver and N32/2 for the Passenger for LHD cars. A seat switch adjuster for each door card is also required. I’ve never done the swap but hopefully someone reading the comments has some experience with this upgrade. Best of luck and thanks again for watching the channel. Please let me know if you ever make the swap.
