For sand flies you can make your own repellant which works really well. Add 1 ml of citronella (I got a bottle from Chemist Warehouse) to 9 ml olive oil. Totally natural and works well.

I grew up in New Zealand in the 1950s and Whangarei was my parents home so we used to visit most summers. I see that my favourite fish chips is still sold the same way except in the old days they used one sheet of clean paper and three sheets of old news papers so we usually got black hand eating them. Instead of unwrapping the fish and chips next time try just tearing off the end and they will remain hot much longer. I have seen much of the world in my 80 odd years and NZ fish and chips are probably the best. Couldn’t stand the taste of the Cod they use in the KK. Your town is probably twice the size that I remember. I was trying to find my old haunts on google maps but they seem to be gone now all built over.

We visited Whangarei to meet my cousins and one day we were down town and I remembered there was an American style sold fountain place on Bank St. It was a quite large place with seats along the counter and sold fountains sticking out of the counter with the tap on top. They made the best sofa I have ever drunk. My sure couldn’t believe it she said it was identical to one in San Francisco where she grew up but it made better sodas in Whangarei. I’m sure it’s gone now but Ty made great sides and served great ice cream. Side note we were married 40 years and lived in 6 countries
@@Ron-uq2hg The place was called Kendall's. Yes it was on Bank Str. I used to order a "Blue Monday Soda" as a kid after playing weekend sport at Kensington Park. School team mates & I used to walk down town to hang out there. Kendall's is long gone and a Bar & Cafe called "Bacio" now resides there.

When I was a kid Stumpys was a bakery and hot food shop. Next door there was a bait and tackle shop too. Every Sunday Dad and I would stop in to Stumpy's to get a pie and a custard twist before heading to Kissing Point Marina to work on his boat in the afternoons

Hoki is the same as Hake back in South Africa - good if fresh, but not great if frozen. My preference of fish in order: Bluenose, Hapuka, John Dory, Tarakihi, Blue Cod, Gurnard and Snapper. Try Bushman insect repellent in a spray can, containing Deet - the higher the Deet % the better, and once you've been bitten, Goodby sandfly oil. Both available from pharmacies.

Good snapper is the best- fish n chip Friday - we’ve been here 5 years and we do still get bitten but that first year we were eaten alive, my NZ son in law never gets bitten!
You could try biocort ointment if available there. But I did find a bottle of Bushman at a chemist in Nelson that did the trick. Now Saffies like us know that the connotation of that word would make some people very deurmekaar here in Saffie. The saying on the bottle from Austalia is "I always have my Bushman with me!!".

I've lived in Whangarei all my life. It's a pretty city. It's certainly the crime capital of Northland. Daily car thefts, weekly ram raids and monthly stabbings. Other than that it's ok.

Old fashioned town? By the time uve driven around fir fish & drinks might not b as cheap - - petrol - - eating outside not so. Glamorous - - theres a soray that the aussies have for these flies - - 😱
@@BeingBedingfield If you're looking for an activity, charter a smallish boat, 6 or 7 meters or so and a skipper for half a day or more. Tell him you want to target John Dory, Kingfish, Snapper, Gurnard. After you've eaten those, see if Hoki still satisfies.

Quite cool that they actually have different fish at a fish n chips place in NZ. Here it is generally hake, hake .. oh or hake.

Yeah, tasted like normal biltong 😅 this food stall is owned by south africans so they call it biltong.
You guys must try the Fry Bread . Lekker with butter and jam. Most fish and chip shops in Northland sell Fry Bread. Its a bit like a Vetkoek.

talk about sandflies ! have you ever been over to the westcoast south island ? dam are they vicious their .....as a guy i went to have a pee and as we do you get your tackle out to do so somewhere private .... anyhow net minute i felt the sensation of what was sandflies bitting me down their ,it was like one of them rang the dinner bell for her mates to join in ....meat and two veg served up ! i think not ,i have the same problem , they go for me too

I've lived in Whangarei all my life. It's a pretty city. It's certainly the crime capital of Northland. Daily car thefts, weekly ram raids and monthly stabbings. Other than that it's ok.

Old fashioned town? By the time uve driven around fir fish & drinks might not b as cheap - - petrol - - eating outside not so. Glamorous - - theres a soray that the aussies have for these flies - - 😱

@@BeingBedingfield If you're looking for an activity, charter a smallish boat, 6 or 7 meters or so and a skipper for half a day or more. Tell him you want to target John Dory, Kingfish, Snapper, Gurnard. After you've eaten those, see if Hoki still satisfies.
