Souvenir shops and stalls selling crab and clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls used to be all over as do postcard views of the bay, Golden Gate and Alcatraz .But in recent years street conditions are eroding all the boutiques and eateries and visitors are met with rows of shuttered stores and boarded-up restaurants

Fifty years ago when I lived in the Bay Area, a favorite thing to do was to go down to Fisherman's Wharf, buy a crab to go, a loaf of sourdough bread and a bottle of good wine, walk to the park and have a feast! GONE NOW!
Some cities now don't allow us to sit, lay in the grassy parks , on a beautiful breezy afternoon, for more than.2 hours. Because it attracts the ' homeless'.

That sounded about right. I visited Fisherman Wharf first time in 1977. I went there last time in 2012 and it was declining then. The street crime was so ad I wouldn't want to park anywhere near the wharf.
This video pains me more that any so far. When I was in the USN, in the early 1970's we used to hang out in Fisherman's wharf. It was a crime free area, clean with great restaurants. Seeing those crab boil pots empty and cold are a sad testament to how far San Francisco has fallen.

I first arrived to San Francisco in 1979, at 18 on my way to Travis AFB. I'd go down there and walk the whole city, go to the forts, hang out at the beaches, eat at all the diners, Crivelli's Oyster Bar at The Cannery. It was vibrant. Last visit was about 8 or so years ago. Still a great place. Now with the tolerance of crime and vagrancy nobody wants to be in business there. Like a lot of places run by extreme leftists. Very sad.

I'd launch in Marin or Mare Island and sail some rough water or camp out at Bodega Bay. Could do a lot on $420 a month in those days. I was in the AR shop - 60th FMS. Then to Ramstein for 2 years. I visited SF regularly in the 80s and early 90s because my brother and his family lived in Livermore not far away. What a unique city, now destroyed by democrats. I loved Fisherman's Wharf and all the sights.

As a Canadian. I grew up thinking Everything was possible in California. My first trip to California was in the seventies. I was six. It was magical for a young kid like me. That experience sunk into my soul!

From the most recent data available (2022 to 2023), we know that 144,472 people moved from CA Population is 39.03 million (2022) so given those numbers I agree more people should move from CA Too many people and very few leaving

I used to live off Francisco St on a little dead end called Brett Hart Terrace. Rented a lovely home for $4K a month with a two car garage back in 2009. The view of the SF bay on Russian Hill was simply marvelous to behold. My wife and I on many an evening walked to Fishermen’s Wharf to dine at these establishments now

In SF, all those trees on the streets if not watered regularly by government workers none would survive. For 3 months that summer in 2009 I lived in Russian Hill SF it never rained, I was told that was normal.
I was told to read a non-fiction book on why, Cadillac Desert. I did, fascinating read on why for millennia for near 6 months every summer in Cali it rarely rains yet the massive Redwoods thrive in this wild unchanging climate.

Redwoods are watered by fog in the dry months. The fog collects on their needles then rains down onto the roots. No shortage of fog on the north coast.

I was born in San Francisco and lived in the Bay Area for 60 years finally had to move away eight years ago came back for a visit I was at fisherman‘s wharf last night at one of the few remaining original restaurants “Scomas” for high school graduation we went to Alioto’s for lunch ate there more times than I can remember it breaks my heart to see what they’ve done to the city by the bay

Damn .. I used to work in fisherman's wharf everyday. It was such a busy, beautiful place. I was also one of the bike riders out by the clock tower on embarcadero. I was out there every single day enjoying the beautiful city and hanging with the people it attracted. The memories that I get when you're walking through these areas hit me hard. It's tough to see honestly. I think about all of the families that had to shut down their businesses, all of the amazing people that all had a part in making the city what it was, struggling then leaving. It's hella sad to see what it is now. They really destroyed one of the best places in the country. San Francisco was incredible. Cheers to the people that love San Francisco, are from San Francisco, that spent time in San Francisco and feel the way I do when I see these videos. Hang tight.

So sad, I remember eating at Aliotos Restaurant in the 1960s and 1970s. It was a lovely time, and Fishermans Warf was wonderful and fun. Ronald Reagan was Govorner, and the future looked bright for California. What happened?

I used to walk around everywhere in the city, when I was a kid with my parents, as a young adult by myself and with my now wife of 14 years. It is so heartbreaking now I didn't take a bus ride down their when I visited my parents' last in petaluma.

On the night of January 24, 1982 I was sitting upstairs at Castagnola's having dinner with some work friends. We were overlooking the wharf and having a great time when crowds began yelling and gathering in the street below. Within minutes people were dancing on top of cars and city busses. It didn't take long to realize that San Francisco had just won their first Superbowl, and the crowds were celebrating.
I still live in the north bay and have almost 50 years of great memories of the wharf from dancing at night clubs, to hundreds of meals and special occasions with family and friends. It's sad to see what the city government has allowed to happen to the wharf and so many other once great places in the city. San Francisco and California in general is still a beautiful place, and the weather is better than just about anyplace in the world, but in the near future, the wife and I will sell our home and retire along the central Oregon coast. Our 3 kids have long ago left the state and put down roots in more affordable and safer places to live and raise their own families. The shine of the golden state has finally faded away for me.
When I was in college back in the sixties, San Francisco was the go to place for ditching school. We used to go down to fisherman's wharf just to watch the tourists. It went downhill really fast, we escaped Californication in 1981 and moved to America.
I loved listening to the seals and shopping. This is heartbreaking 😢.

Rampant crime is just the last straw that broke the camel’s back. The pandemic was like the catalyst that started the chain reaction of everything … even the division of the country. I worked as a manager of a shop in Fisherman Wharf. My shop tried to stay aloft for nearly 2 years but the lack of tourists forced us to shut down. The San Francisco city businesses rely heavily on tourism. This post sounded naive from keep saying “GONE” but I bet he didn’t have a business in Fisherman Wharf in order to know the real truth of the demise of San Francisco tourism!
I was in San Francisco as a tourist from the UK in 2017 and again in 2022. You could see the decline between those years and it is a great pity for such a beautiful place with a great history. Who are the idiots in charge who have allowed this to happen?

Wow. Didn't know the wharf was all closed too. I had thought most of the closures were in the financial district.
I personally think this is all by design. In the early 90's, I made weekly deliveries there, and it was a bustling mad house. In San Francisco, the voters' politics far out weigh common sense. It has always been that way. Next to close, all the souvenir shops, there will be no visitors.
Only ONE demographic and political ideology is to blame for this.....
So sad. Fisherman's Wharf was truly an enchanted place in my childhood--more than 60 years ago. I remember summer vacations, riding my bike from Marin across the Golden Gate, cruising all around the city, and hanging out at the wharf with a bowl of chowder.

Unbelievable!!!!. I was 20 years old when I first was there. It was mesmerizingly beautiful and so unique, so gorgeous. It is hard for me to believe what has become of it and the wharf was just amazing. I am75 years old now. What an absolute tragedy.

He is cherry picking. A lot of restaurants opened up / moved a few blocks south to North Beach, which is more lively than it was pre-pandemic. Also some places he claimed are "closed" are not closed, they just weren't open at whatever time he chose to film, for instance at 6:50 "this one also recently closed" no, that is Surisan, and it is very much still open (hence all the tables and chairs lol).
What are the official stats on economic situation in SF? Does anyone have a those numbers?

@@HazeOfWhearyWater Yeah, a lot of these businesses in Fisherman's Wharf, which exclusively rely on tourism because it's peak tourist trap that has zero appeal to locals, closed down a couple years ago during the height of the pandemic when tourism dropped to nothing. North Beach on the other hand is next door, appeals to both locals and tourists, and has had a ton of new activity over just the past couple years with tons of new bars, restaurants, shops, etc. opening up. For tourists there's also Pier 39, again right next door, which is overall a pretty vibrant tourist trap still.
I knew this would happen. I was working at the car rental in SFO and hundreds of tourist everyday crying returning with there car broken in. It's just so sad the lawlessness that happened in the city.

The criminals did such a good job breaking into cars that there's no more easy pickings. The Palace of Fine Arts, The Golden Gate Bridge and The Academy of Science and the Museum are no longer safe areas for the tourists.

Right behind the Tech industry (which is also leaving San Francisco) much of the city's income is derived from tourism, and one of its prime tourist attractions has always been Fisherman's Wharf. I wonder how many tourists from all over the world saved their money for a trip to San Francisco, only to be greeted by homeless drug addicts, disgusting and dangerous sidewalks, and shuttered businesses and attractions. Is there any doubt that they'll be spreading the word, far and wide, that San Francisco is no longer a vacation destination?

I visited there with family back in 2020. It was vibrant and busy. The sea lions were a prime attraction. We had clam chowder at one of those restos. What a disgrace....
I quit visiting SF because all the homeless made it sickening and unsafe.

I mourn the loss of my once favorite city, enjoyed from the late 50's; the fog horns at night, the unique cafes and restaurants. Golden Gate Park before it became an open pit sewer, how sad as I remember the odors of the ivy, now replaced with the smell of urine and feces. Like Camelot, I almost wonder if it ever really existed. It has been over 2 decades since I returned and, having moved from California as a socioeconomic and political refugee, know I will never see the fog roll in, nor hear my beloved fog horns again.
You do still have your memories though. It is so sad that nothing ever seems to stay the same and change is definitely not always for the better.
Super dangerous to go wandering around on foot in some parts of SF, and parking your car is an invitation to vandalize and steal. The city has reached the point of no return, at least for several decades. And considering it is still getting worse, that clock hasn't started.
How did Golden Gate Park become an "open pit sewer"? Very confused. I have spent countless weekend days tooling around the park and never smelled anything resembling a sewer. Its the most beautiful park in the country.
@@Arturo-sm1tb Last time I and my late spouse visited my once beloved city was a couple of decades ago. We entered from one of the South entrances. It smelled of piss and feces, being in the morning after a breakfast, grungy young men were staggering out of the ivy, rolling up their dirty sleeping bags. It was horrifying, even then. I cannot even imagine how bad it is these days. I would love to visit it once more before I depart, but to have my car broken into to steal virtually nothing of value, to be accosted by drug addicted schizophrenics who have more social status and protection than I, I believe I shall pass, sadly.
The loss of Alioto's and Fisherman's Grotto is an absolute travesty. San Franscisco has lost an important part of its history and culture. These are famous restaurants that served the elite. This is almost like burning down an art museum or setting fire to a national park. It's one thing to lose Jack in the Box and Walgreens but we are now losing the best parts of San Franscisco.
It’s heartbreaking, I used to go to SF at least once a year for convections, sometimes a second time just for a personal trip. Losing Alioto’s & Fisherman’s Grotto is just so sad.

I live in Sydney. I've been to SF on maybe a dozen occasions up until 2014. Similarly, so with LA, and I viewed another TH-cam showing 3rd Street was nearly deserted at 11am on a Friday morning three weeks ago.

The problem with going to Fisherman's wharf is you have a 75% chance your car will get broken into. In other parts of the city it's only about 65%.
I've been going to that area with my family for 12 years every February. Never had a break in, and have always had a car. These videos are total exaggerations.

I'll never forget my destroyer sailing under the bay bridge to dock at Fisherman's Warf for 3 days R&R back in '76. Crammed pack full of businesses & customers, busy AF! Wax museum, tons of crab & fresh fish, lots of sailboats/fishing boats at the docks. I remember a thick fog over the docks starting to burn away as the Sun rose. It was rather magical looking. After a great morning looking around & stuffing myself with crab & other fish, a bunch of us headed straight for Chinatown. Half of us split up to look for nookie & the other half for hash or herb. Both groups easily found what they were searching for... Thanks for your tour!
Coast Guard Radioman School for me (1980) and USCGC RUSH (1985-86). Day On The Green at Candlestick Park and GLORIOUS bar-hopping. Took family there in 2021; was shocked, and it's only gone from a logarithmic to exponential decline since. 😥

Our experience the last we were there in 2011 was when my son’s new car was scratched by the homeless guys who were sitting on his hood and playing their boombox. He called the police and they took the report thenasked him if he wanted to sue. He said yes and the police said, “unfortunately, the homeless people are king here in SF”. That was the last time we were there as a family and my grandson’s car was broken into and took his laptop. We avoid it like a plague.

I'm glad he didn't get a chance to see what has become of this once beautiful city that he was so proud to be from 😢😢😢 We lived in the Sacramento area mid 80's to 93 and spent many wonderful weekends there, including eating at Aliotto's. I worked in the City for over 2 years at CPMC off of California street near Russian Hill.
To see this iconic area boarded up makes me cry 😢 Those three restaurants WERE San Francisco!
The wait staff were dressed with short tuxedo tops. Your meal was delivered on exquisite plates.
Outside of each of them you could watch the crab 🦀 being cooked and you could buy fresh crab, clam chowder and sourdough bread.
And as you showed across the street from the restaurants were souvenir shops that also sold sweatshirts.
During the day the weather was stellar however when the fog creeped in the temperature would drop and many tourists would run in to get a sweatshirt
Fisherman's Wharf was a must see when visiting SF. So sad.😢

Fisherman's Grotto was a treat for us when i was a child, as were Tarantino's, Castagnola's, and Alioto's. Crab cioppino, mussels and linguini, fettucine alle vongole. This one really hit me in the feels. At Tarantino's they knew our family, and gave us special service, always the best. In the 1950s and 1960s there was an old Italian man on the wharf with a hand-cranked penny-rolling machine and you could choose to have him roll your penny with am image of the Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, the 1939 Treasure Island World's Fair, or the Lord's Prayer. Every night he lifted the machine into the back of his pick-up truck and took it home, and every morning he was there again. Through an odd set of circumstances, after he retired and another man bought the machine, i ended up owning it, and later i sold it to an antique penny machine collector. Goodbye forever, Fisherman's Wharf.

OMG Leo! I lived and worked in SF from 1981-1985, it was such a vibrant city! the Fisherman’s Wharf was full of life with the best restaurants and fresh seafood, all kinds of specialty stores and tourist buses full of visitors having a world class experience.
