Sadly politicians don't understand that. They think that stores can operate with uncontrolled theft.... they think that landlords can operate without rent. They think that they are doing a service to the poor by allowing theft in stores and freeloading in rental properties when all they are really doing is destroying civilized society. I think that might be their goal.
This same thing happened in Boston when Walgrens closed its store 'In de hood'. It was being looted daily -- shelves picked clean by Community Members -- but when they shut down local politicians & Community Members blamed racism😮😮😮😮.
I'm a member of that demographic and ALMOST always avoided that area. What you say is true and painful. The lack of discipline, self policing and accountability in "our" demographic is appalling. Back in the day if one acted "wrong" the community would deal with the offender (child or adult) in most instances. Police were called or needed only in extreme cases. The rise of drugs, filthy rap music and proliferation of guns has played a BIG part in that. On the other hand San Francisco is NOT a place for anyone middle class or below. If one does not have rent control or pulling in at least 10k a month then forget living well here. After 30 years off and on I've finally decided to move on. Been traveling recently and the quality of life is so much better in places where people still have a sense of measure regardless of demographics.

Why? They are all woke. They sit in their government paid for dorm rooms, smoke pot and reinforce their Communist/Woke ideas in a cloud of pot smoke in their paid for echo chamber.
San Francisco residents, you will soon have NO grocery and drug stores in your neighborhoods. Food and Pharmacy deserts coming. You deserve who you vote for.

A scorpion wants to cross a river but cannot swim, so it asks a frog to carry it across. The frog hesitates, afraid that the scorpion might sting it, but the scorpion promises not to, pointing out that it would drown if it killed the frog in the middle of the river. The frog considers this argument sensible and agrees to transport the scorpion. Midway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway, dooming them both. The dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung despite knowing the consequence, to which the scorpion replies: "I am sorry, but I couldn't help myself. It's my character."
Right! It’s all about consequences for actions, California took away the consequences. Not enough jail room costing tax payers $130k a year to jail 1 person because they got ride of the death penalty.
This breaks my heart. I was a sub Contractor there from 1982 till 2020. I watched the fillmore change and get built up and became something. A place with pride. A safe place. They closed up the projects in the area and all of Fillmore from Market to the Marina was a bussling economy. Now it's surrendering to the lowest common demoninater. Filth and crime and the city allowed it. But not just the Fillmore but now the whole city is under attack. The city takes in the homeless with extra cash. They provide showers and drugs and places to shoot drugs. The city spends billions on the scum and look at what we have today. For as small as the city is they encourage everyone on Parole or Probation to become a part of there city. They provide housing at all different levels of criminal behavior at all different amounts of money. Free apartments and they build new apartments for those less fortunate that most people working cannot even afford. Yes this breaks my heart.
I’m a retired Safeway Driver. I delivered to all of the Safeway’s in S.F., the Bay Area, and Northern California. Safeway will not deal with theft. If the store is not making a profit, they will close the store eventually. Same thing happened to the Safeway on Ocean Ave in S.F. They were constantly being ripped off. I remember when that Safeway opened on Ocean Ave, and I remember when they closed that store after 10 years!
I'm a courtesy clerk in San Diego. I was in local 1222 in 1977-78. Rehired 3 times since then. I get 245 dollars next year at retirement. Be glad you probably get the golden 85. The young kids here get nothing unless they become dept managers. No future.
I used to shop at this Safeway. It was always chaos and blatant theft happened all the time. And so sad to see all those bars and restaurants closed. What Democrats have done to SF is devastating
I live near Portland the same thing has been here. Homeless would steal food off people's plates in outdoor seating. Nearly every time I'm in Portland I see theft

I lived in Dublin back in 2004 and rode BART into Montgomery to go to work. Things were great, but the city was still walkable and livable - lots of activity, places to eat and shop. It was a little sketchy but not catastrophic. Now it's like a zombie apocalypse B movie.
agreed, used to work on the embarcadero in the early 00s. it used to be safe to walk around all those downtwon stations - embarcadero, powell, montgomery. now it just feels all abandoned and nothing but homeless and addicts walking around. only the civic center stop used to be like that, now it's several stops.
Thanks for spilling the tea on prop 36, few realize that little loophole. Even IF someone is arrested the DA will probably reduce or drop charges. Merry Christmas Leo!
@@LeoMetalTraveler That's what our downtown in a city near San Diego looks like, mostly closed stores, many broken windows and homeless sleeping there. Stores either can't make it or are voluntarily leaving. Cops are understaffed and don't bother responding to theft calls for at least an hour. If they do show up, they usually will not bother to question or arrest the perp, they say it's not worth the paperwork since there will be no punishment by the courts. I have talked to many store workers about this and the businesses, due to insurance rules, also forbid employees from even saying anything if they see theft, they can only call the police, who won't show, so then they just stop calling and anyone can steal anything they want now. Also if you get assaulted, if you don't say you got hit so hard that you lost consciousness, the police will not arrest the attacker even if there's 20 witnessess and even the permit admits the attack, I literally know someone that happened to, attacked by an insane person who later admitted it, and the cops released the attacker immediately and the victim had to go to the hospital. California...
I think it also depends where you live at in the state. I live in the north state and the local PD started full throttle even after the SCOTUS Grants Pass decision earlier this year and even more so now that Prop 36 passed. I think you’re probably not going to get a major overhaul if you live in a blue county though. We kind of figured that would be the case.
They just need to repeal the excessive discrimination laws. The basic set of laws is more than good enough. The excessive laws only serve to protect the looters and home invaders. We had homeowners detained and that is unfair and disgusting. A small store owner was robbed by an armed robber (pistol) who aimed the weapon at the store owner. But the store owner managed to AHEM the armed robber. He was cited for too much force, the family of the criminal robber sued and won. The store owner lost the store as it had to be sold to pay off the civil settlement and they still owe money on it. No one, not even the former owner, wants to make a gofundme since the money would only go to pay the robbers' family who made off like bandits on the settlement.
In California, Article II, Section 6(a) of the California Constitution specifies that elections for local elective offices (such as city council members, mayors, county supervisors, and school board members) must be nonpartisan. This is the plan of the Democrats. Destroy business and create poverty, which increases the demand for welfare. The money that the Government borrows to support people on welfare, inflates the currency supply and increases the national debt, thus transferring our wealth to the small group of people, who prints the currency. They are encouraging crime, in the guise of being non-racist, to transfer our property to themselves.
Being raised in San Francisco during the 1950's, 60's and 70's we were always told to stay out of the Fillmore district because of the racist people that would attack beat, rob and possibly kill you. I had to drive Fell Street that runs through the Fillmore to get to work M-F in the 1970's and I would get flipped off and verbally threatened because I was white. These same kinds of people are why the stores are closing in SF. So, damn glad I haven't lived in SF since the late 1970's.
I almost moved into the apartment complex on Geary next door to that store. After walking around that store and the neighborhood for about 30 seconds, I knew better than to move there. And that was over 30 years ago when things were nowhere near as violent as they are now. That city is in a doom spiral.
1985 was the year I spent on the streets of San Francisco. Market+Tenderloin=Heavy Metal Duty!!! Some pretty rough skinheads and green Mohawk haircuts were popular.
While living in SF, I told my girlfriend at the time in 1992 that this was coming and coming a lot faster than her and anyone else knew. I saw no point in making long term personal investments in a community that was and will implode. She thought I was crazy. So. I moved to the mountains in '93 and I dropped her and a few other clueless people from the area a couple years later from my life and have not spoken to her or them since. Yes, it did implode and now many of those people I warned left the city for the same mountains I moved to in '93.

The Fillmore district is one of the mostly black sections of SF and has alot of subsidized housing. The SF Police have a hands-off policy on black crime.
@@stevew1851 Under Trumps Tax Reform, a new tax bracket was created. Safeway Corp., used to pay 21% in taxes. As of 2018, Safeway corp. Pays 2% in taxes. The tax bracket was reformed all the way down to the lowest tax earner. Middle class citizens tax burden was 16% average. This bracket put most middle class workers paying 25% taxes. All of this was put into place for the 2018 tax season. Congress refused to pass this tax bill. It was considered detrimental and devastating to the American people. Trump put it through under Executive order. Executive orders have a short time they are allowed to be in place. This tax burdon placed in Americas middle class is set to expire in 2025. Don't worry Trump promises he will extend it and offer furter cuts to corporations like Safeway at the expense of the American people. Did these Billion dollar companies appreciate the American people for taking their tax burdon and fiving them enormous tax breaks. Absolutely not. They jacked their prices and reduced portion sizes. Whats better than Profit? More profit. Most Presidents who have offered tax breaks to these Companies did this as an incentive. Foe example: Clinton gave Corporations a tax break for hiring people who were in the welfare to work program. Hiring a percentage of people earned a break for Companies. They got additional breaks in taxes every 6 months the person was employed for. Bush and Regan also offered similar programs for other Population types. Thus is the first time this deep a tax cut gas been given to companies and there has never been a corporate tax cut enacted under Executive order. It has cost America 4.8 trillion dollars and has further ruined the middle class. Wonder why people are pissed and stealing from stores?

This actually happened in an area my sibling lives. Due to thefts the stores closed creating a 'food desert'. Now the nearest stores are MILES, so the rare people who drive are BOMBARDED with ride requests.
Too much hassle for employees to get "seriously" hurt for their corporate lords; they have risk their lives in the past by trying to protect 10-20$ worth of good, would you do the same? for low wage?. Considering people don't like showing empathy towards any of the low wage employees.. sadly in the US; its why lot of these corporations are going bankrupt and using their own ceos/equity firms to ruin them and sell off properties as "online" sellers warehouses, like they have been doing since covid. If anything, stats tend to how, lot of these business's are already failing.
Shoplifting is a crime. It's basically theft of property. For some unknown reason, the DA wants to lessen the crime and doesn't rightfully charge people which leads us to this situation. You have repeat offenders stealing and making it difficult for businesses to stay in business.

The Clay Theatre in San Francisco was a historic and iconic movie theater located in the Pacific Heights neighborhood. It originally opened in 1910, making it one of the oldest theaters in the city. The Clay Theatre was well-known for its art-house and independent film screenings, often showcasing foreign films, documentaries, and film festival entries. Its charming facade and single-screen setup made it a beloved spot for cinephiles and locals alike. The theater had a classic marquee and a cozy, intimate interior that harkened back to an earlier era of cinema. Unfortunately, the Clay Theatre closed its doors in 2020 after years of financial struggles, compounded by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite efforts by community members and preservationists to save it, the theater ceased operations, leaving many San Francisco residents mourning the loss of a cultural landmark.
What’s unfortunately not being stated by those ladies about stores closing is the city is increasing taxes on everything so when the landlord increases rent blame the government. Plus permits and other regulations that increase rent.
It's too easy to directly blame the one person charging you, and not ask why the landlord's costs are also going up. Politicians can get free tv time where landlords cannot, so people only hear one side of a story.
And totally against it too. Somehow a law passed allowing $450 stealable! Then it got raised to $950. So what do you expect when that happens? Terrible social engineering.

Guess what? - NEWSOM’S PAGE WAS BLANK! NOTHING! EMPTY! * And there was NO VOTE to make it a misdemeanor to shoplift < $950.00. * There was NO VOTE to let the homeless poop on the streets! * There was NO VOTE to let dangerous convicts back out into society. * We DID vote to recall Newsom, and they cheated again. * We did not vote to allow illegal immigrants into California or pay for their needs. * We did not vote for reparations. @@Oldbmwr100rs Not quite. My understanding is that the banks base building valuation in terms of floor space and rent/lease rates on OCCUPIED space, and actual vacancy rates are not factored in. Many of the "investors" in these properties have long term loans that would be called in if the balance due exceeded the appraised value of the building. Since many of them don't have the cash to make up the difference due to the soft demand for commercial real estate, they double down and refuse to lower the rents OR bring in new tenants at lower rates because that would reduce the overall valuation for the property, even though it's a much bigger risk for them in the long run. Maybe it's time for a few investors (and maybe a couple of banks) to fail so the necessary market correction can be made. 😐
To add to the comments about Palmer's Tavern on Fillmore: a 40-year-old millennial venture capitalist created an LLC with a partner and they started buying up most of the businesses along this 2-block stretch of upper Fillmore. Ten-Ichi was another victim. Many of these were in the charming old Victorian buildings. He raised their rents and I'm not sure what will happen next, but he's destroying what was once a charming neighborhood with cool places to go. Maybe he wants to tear it all down? But he successfully is putting them out of business.

I have seen these new gates in San Francisco and have seen multiple people get through the toll gates without swiping their card or phone with a BART employee watching and literally doing nothing My question is why is BART spending all this money for?
What they're doing is channeling $90 million to well connected constituents who bought the politicians way into office. In the age of the wire and cell phone camera, nobody does payoffs by handing off a lunch sack full of cash at a diner anymore. You award a no-bid contract.

Many of the "investors" in these properties have long term loans that would be called in if the balance due exceeded the appraised value of the building. Since many of them don't have the cash to make up the difference due to the soft demand for commercial real estate, they double down and refuse to lower the rents OR bring in new tenants at lower rates because that would reduce the overall valuation for the property, even though it's a much bigger risk for them in the long run. Maybe it's time for a few investors (and maybe a couple of banks) to fail so the necessary market correction can be made. 😐
twisted logic of landlords doesn't look it that way.
My S.F. resident sister claims she lives in an enlightened neighborhood. Them 'enlightened' lights be going out!
You are doing a great job of investigative journalism. With the msm abdicating their responsibility this is badly needed.
21st century oligarchs exclaiming: “Let them eat cake and……take grocery carts!” 😂🎉😂🎉
BART is spending 90 million dollars for toll gates to stop fare evasions. I have seen these new gates in San Francisco and have seen multiple people get through the toll gates without swiping their card or phone with a BART employee watching and literally doing nothing My question is why is BART spending all this money for?
Illusion
What they're doing is channeling $90 million to well connected constituents who bought the politicians way into office.
In the age of the wire and cell phone camera, nobody does payoffs by handing off a lunch sack full of cash at a diner anymore. You award a no-bid contract.
Just politicians finding excuses to sign new construction or purchasing contracts in order to get a kickback or sinecure jobs for relatives and friends.
Where's Detective Callahan when you need him?
You do a good job showing us around. Thanks!
When your local grocery store can’t keep carts from getting stolen, you’re living in a bad neighborhood.
I’ve never experienced such lawlessness. Eastern North Carolina doesn’t have people like that.
