Without a doubt one of the best ROM hacks that simply improve on the original. I can have different Sonic 3 experiences just from changing one or two things. A lot of the things I didn't like or had my head scratching from the original are fixed in this hack and it's awesome.
I didn't realise there were still bugs in the hack from the original but considering that there were a lot of bugs from the original one or two slipping through is inevitable. Great review RHS, it really showed how awesome this hack is, looking forward to your next review as well as your live stream of this hack

@@EpicB I mean, even if there was a mobile port, this might still qualify due to the sheer amount of customization it has that Sega probably wouldn't have let Taxman add.
To me, my completely subjective 'definitive' version is the originally intended zone order, super music set to the unused S&K Collection song, the normal music for the zones, the S&K miniboss theme(much more fitting for these fights than the S3 one), the S3 Knuckles theme(which causes the S3 miniboss theme to play during the Knuckles fight, which I almost feel was the original intention given that Knuckles' theme is part of it.), Super Transform and Cancel set to on, Tails Assist set to On, and I forget which main theme I used. Oh, and it autoboots to Sonic 3 Complete. I actually own the Sega Collection on Steam and I flat out replaces the Sonic 3 and Knuckles ROM with Sonic 3 Complete and named it Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I will occasionally go out of the title screen to look at Blue Sphere, but otherwise I just boot straight to the title screen and treat it like Sonic 3 (Part One) and Sonic & Knuckles are nothing but a myth.

@@EpicB You can also say that the Steam version is also good. If you prefer Sonic 3 Complete but want a little bit of more, you have Sonic A.I.R for The Steam Version if you dont wanna use any emulators or get the game legally.
I noticed a weird bug when playing as Tails. He couldn’t grab Super Emerald rings. Then, when I was screwing around in MVZ, I could suddenly collect them. Has this happened to anyone else?

It’s not a bug, Sonic Team purposely made it like that because in Sonic 3, making the monitor drop from the bottom would crush you.

10:31 They didn't have Eggman arms-boss in the lock-on version Sonic mode most likely because of the difficulty. They did keep him in the Knuckles gameplay because Eggman arms-boss is easier beat with Knuckles than with Sonic at the end of Launch Base Act 2. All Knuckles had to do was glide toward it whereas w/ Sonic you had to be more precise with the attack.
I still go back and re-watch these reviews. It's nice to watch someone who stays professional through the whole review and gives an honest opinion instead of simply saying a game is garbage or amazing. Other people will list only characteristics that support their opinion, but it's nice to see that isn't the same here.
At 11:43 idk if anyone else knows this but look at the symbol of the tornado plane when Sonic turns super and you will see that the symbol starts flashing just like item boxes, rings and the animals

I love this game, I have it on my laptop, and I haven't run into any problems yet, so keep up the good work.
Amusing intro with highs and lows. Whilst discussing your points, I also like how you made a demonstration with the cartridges.
I really like the cutscene transitions from Carnival Night to Flying Battery to Ice Cap (at least with Sonic I do). The gameplay and music options in the main menu were awesome part and a variety of settings to choose from based on personal preference. Lots of positives that fixed many issues from the original releases with plenty of additions for maximum experience.
I had no idea about this hidden feature in the 12th minute mark, but extremely impressive whilst going outside of the box.
Overall: Very informative, well explained, and even though no game is perfect, but big improvements are still a step in the right direction.
P.S. Ooh, The S Factor. Haven't played that in ages.

Played it recently, and boy, is it great as heck. Normally, I'm against ROM hacks, but this one made an already masterpiece game even better than before! It's excellent!
0:23 Me, when Sonic Mania surpassed Sonic 3 & Knuckles for good with it's recently released update, along with the Encore DLC. Sorry S3K, but you were far ahead of your time. We still love you.

That route meant for Knuckles in Death Egg is actually a Tails route. When you get to that bottomless pit you can fly up to the main route again

Also, the trick you tried doing to attempt skipping Ice Cap, Launch Base, and Mushroom Valley may have worked if you switched from "Original" to "As Released" before completing Flying Battery
Man, the fact that those PC version tracks were actually prototype tracks is bizarre

Interestingly since this video is this old it means that the hack was using remastered music instead of the prototype music.

I've always had this bugging thought in my head about how the vast majority of Remakes always screw up by not using the OPTIONS menu for their features and additions, letting the player decide what they think is optimal change and what isn't.
But this...this is beyond what I could possibly imagine. I really wish you guys nothing but the best for your future releases, and I'll be eagerly waiting for whatever it is.

Man, I can't believe that I never seen your review. It's great and a close rival to Cybershill's review on TH-cam. I totally agree about wishing there was an option to cancel Tails flight and curl into a ball. No one has ever implimented it in any hack as far as I can tell. I would like to take this idea once step further and say that I wish you could curl out of flight, and then start flying again before hitting the ground (but this won't reset your 'flight gauge', only until landing that is). Speaking of which, why can't we get a flight gauge for tails next to the score and ring counters?

It's the rare hack that's not in the "new levels, bosses, etc." sense, but in the "makes the game better and easier to play" sense. Swell review, RHS!

Little did he know 4 years later we would get Sonic Origins
11:45 Actually, Sonic 3 saves *do* carry over to Sonic 3 & Knuckles -- but only the *very first time* that Sonic 3 cart is locked on. When it sees the S3&K area of the FeRAM is blank or invalid, it copies the Sonic 3 saves over. But once there's valid Sonic 3 & Knuckles save data, it won't happen again (unless you manually erase it or corrupt it somehow).

Perfect work, Red. Despite the bugs, that you pointed in Sonic 3 Complete, it still deserves 4 stars out of 5. While the Drop Dash isn't present in Sonic 3 Complete, it has a reason to be non-existent. Sonic 3 Complete came earlier than Sonic Mania (the game with the Drop Dash), that's why Drop Dash isn't present in it. Keep up the good work and we might have a Competition round in S3C or SM Competition+.

I must say, this was the most definitive way to play Sonic 3 all in one, and i swear, this is one of the best rom hacks enjoyable. Using the ability to change soundtracks, from Sonic 3 to the S&K PC Collection, and the Difficulty option, was such an awesome touch. Love this rom hack.

I ordered the reproduced cartridge of Sonic 3 Complete from AliExpress after playing it on the Fusion emulator. A really great improvement over the original with many more options. Now I can play it on my Sega Genesis!

The Sonic 3 PC Music is not from the PC Release as it was originally in the prototype that is not mentioned due to the video being released before hidden palace discovered the prototype

One thing you forgot to cover when talking about the music from the PC Collection: The "Special Theme" option in the settings for the Super Sonic music is actually a Mega Drive (Genesis) remix of the unused theme from the PC Collection

I've been playing this on my MegaSD with the Sonic 1/2 sprites, fantastic game.

One thing I like about this game is you don't even need to beat all the Special Stages. Just the first 7. Doing this automatically puts you on the path to unlocking the true final boss and ending. Everything after that is for Super Emeralds which are completely optional. If for some reason you do get them all you unlock an even stronger form of Sonic. So really it's simply a matter of beating the easy set of Special Stages. You don't need to beat the harder set for the Super Emeralds. Nice.

I think the reason for no Knuckles in Sonic 2 is because Blue Sphere is actually on the S&K cartridge (It can actually be activated with any cartridge. It's pretty much an error screen for when a game is not supported hence the "NO WAY"), but it's not activated in normal gameplay. While there is SOME data on the cartridge that does work with Sonic 2 (Like Knux's physics and sprites, level tweaks, palette changes, etc), the game itself isn't there. It would take up even more space to implement Sonic 2's code and assets into the rom.

Very detailed description part of changes, I've played a bit in S3 Complete but didn't know even about half of them. (I wasn't aware that you were infolved in creating it, that's what is happening when you're not paying attention to credits :P). I admit that I'm still playing in PC version from 1997 (it's not popular opinion, but IMO all replaced music themes are much, much better than those original, plus I have soft spot on MIDI-style music), but asides from that, I personally consider that there is no reason to play in original S3&K, if you have Sonic 3 Complete. Well, maybe except if someone is using all this steam-community stuff from Mega Drive Collection, but other than that - S3Complete is the way to go.
Besides - I'm glad that you've included reviews on your channel, IMO they're much, much more interesting than streaming stuff. This one was rather description than review, but I'm guessing that due to specific of this ROM-hack, it's totally justified to go in this way.
My specialized rom tries to act like a completed version of the November ‘93 prototype. It’s a good effort with what was available on the site and in-game options :3

I may be just learning but I wonder how possibly could really be if I was able to download different characters in Sonic 3 complete other than Sonic Knuckles and Tails🤔
It's nice to really have control of the game as the video displays which is exactly why I keep pressing on the characters because not only they supposed to have control but they all got different abilities and moves that could be definitely useful when you play this game.

He says someone arranged the Sonic 3 & K Collection music for the Mega Drive, but it was already arranged for Mega Drive in the beta. Hope the actual original arrangements were used, right off the beta.
The Sonic 3 beta wasn't discovered at of the time of this video's release and it wasn't discovered at the time of the latest build of Sonic 3 Complete. The collection music within this hack was indeed made by ValleyBell and is not the beta original.
Thanks for the response. Bravo to ValleyBell for giving us the kind of option fans who appreciate cut game items and lost game trivial really enjoy. If I was writing a review of Sonic 3, I would have taken off points for the misery of having to listen to its Genesis / Mega Drive music, so I love these mods that let me take the "Jackson" related stuff out, though I love being able to pick per zone even more, because I do like Ice Cap's original Mega Drive release tune.
For the Ice Cap Zone entrances, Knuckles and Tails should glide and fly into the zone respectively. Knuckles would glide into the wall with force and cling on it, as if he’s Hyper Knuckles, and this would cause the snow to fall.
