Hey guys, welcome to LOST BITS! Where I will cover unused, unreleased and unseen things in various games! In this video, after a long Sonic hiatus, we’re diving right back into Sonic & Knuckles! 15:42 I did discover it by myself, I was messing around with debug and I noticed that the ring count now had random letters in it, I kept collecting S monitors to see how many letters I could get until I forced myself into Sonic & Knuckles.
It's fun to break S3&K, especially getting red Sonic or blue Knuckles. I remember doing fun stuff with the PC collection too.

@@TsubasaAmsel Just use debug and force Sonic to fight Knuckles' final boss at Sky Sanctuary 2. Once the plane's gone, you can switch to an item to stop yourself from dying and place some platforms. I can't remember which is which, but trying to go super will change you from light blue Sonic to red Sonic. Or possibly vice-versa. I'd have to check to remember.

I did accidentally as a curious kid, and possibly many others did too.
The way it happened for me was when I first discovered playing around with debug mode, I noticed when you get an S TV, it also gives you 50 rings. The natural response was oooo let's just give myself tons of rings. Then I found out if you get an S TV when it would cause you to go over 999 rings, it changes the ring numbers into letters or weird number symbols. Curiosity brain wonders how far does it go, does it turn into even more weird stuff the more and more rings you get? How high can it go? What happens when it runs out of letters/numbers to use? I COULD just hit one TV at a time, but I could probably see how weird it gets even faster if I lined up a bunch of TVs and spin dashed them. So I did. The first few times, I only used a few TVs, it severely lagged the game but didn't crash it. Oooooo I wonder what happens if you line up even more! Boom, game crash, back to sonic and knuckles, wow that's cool! And that's how it's possible to discover that.
I never posted about it or anything back then, it's just a fun thing I did myself, so if knowledge of it is online, I guarantee was discovered separately, possibly even this same way, by multiple curious people.
The reason is actually because the game tries to run the super transformation for *every* monitor you just broke, which causes it to overflow and destroy other important areas of code.
more specifically, the code for making Hyper Sonic's stars appear. The game is trying to make stars for each monitor broken and it overloads the sprite limit

@@Fluxuation I'm not a total whiz on it but to my understanding when the game resets improperly like that it fails to check the flag that tells the game whether Sonic 3 is locked on or not.

9:47 the S ball graphics are still technically used, the gumball machine has a non glowing 'S' ball in it, but it never comes out
Isn't that technically a different graphic, though? Afaik, that graphic seen in-game is all one sprite, so the individual graphic still isn't used.

Is the ball blue? There are a few things that are programmed to match Sonic's color/state so if it was it would only glow if using Super/Hyper Sonic. Since this can't happen in a special stage, it could be a likely reason for it being cut? Unless it was a test item like the "S" Monitors or something... I'm legitimately intrigued now.
I remember finding that row of monitors in hidden palace with tails! I loved exploring every corner of these levels and like to see devs put in these very hidden secrets.

I've been using that since forever. I find it works better for me in a smaller area than a wide one, you need as many sprites as possible.
You can get back into S3&K by doing the same thing.

Fun fact time: At 10:15 for anyone wondering why it's written in katakana and not hiragana.
Katakana is used when robots talk (in comics, etc.) and was historically used for things like telegrams, etc.
Think of it like seeing digital LED display letters vs handwritten ones.
Side note: Katakana is also used for foreign loan words & names, sound FX and when foreign speakers talk.
Also used to amplify native words that are usually written with kanji/hiragana, to make them stand out & pop (have impact)!
Does anybody else notice that around when he starts speaking about how tails is kind of playable, the music changes into the flinstones theme, and then the mario theme?

Fun Fact: At 16:03 There's a crazy Sonic Spinning trough frames, this is accessible with Debug mode and it's called «Animation Test», the most interesting thing is that there are some unused Sprites.

I actually discovered the S monitor debug mode trick when I was a kid. Even managed to get back to normal S3&K by doing the same thing. Didn't find any documentation at the time.

Sound 32 seems to actually be used in the Sonic Classics Collection for the Nintendo DS (all retro sonic games in one bundle), it plays at the normal ending of sonic 3&K once you beat Mecha Sonic. (Bare in mind this is distinct from the ‘End Credits’ theme). I can always remember it playing once the credits end, that lovely feeling of accomplishment.
15:41 I remember a while back I was messing around with debug mode on sonic and knuckles 3 and booted up sonic and knuckles through the same glitch. I was playing on a emulator on my wii, so I thought it was just a glitch of the emulator. Its awesome to know that I found something like that without doing any research on it, previously discovered or not.

Its funny that the unused song actually replaces the Sonic 3 final victory, the one you hear when beating Launch Base Act 2 aka Big Arms, in Origins.
Sound 32 in the bonus stage is used at the end of the credits for *Sonic 3 and Knuckles* when he jumps of the tornado and turns into hyper sonic but the credits one is extended

I actually discovered this when I was playing Sonic 3 CZ and I was fucking around with the S monitors, eventually it just dipped to S&K and I just kept doing stuff as usual.

15:40 Most likely is related to the game resorting to debug mode after crashing and completely unrelated to stacking S monitors. It’s just that you forced a crash by opening so many of those monitors at the same time.
Seems to be the same logic used by 3D Blast, where the game crashing causes level select to appear.

Sonic & Knuckles was one of the first DLCs.
It isn’t a DLC, it’s an add on.

18:49 I remember that in some beta version S monitor is actually here. So I thought they left it here because this area is sort of 'super secret' (so even S-monitor here!) but now I undestand that probably it WAS a test area for developers.
maybe the bonus in the ground was because they wanted knuckles to maybe dig downwards..but scrapped it
